[PC, PS3, X360] Review Roundup - Dead Island: Riptide

[PC, PS3, X360] Review Roundup - Dead Island: Riptide
[Image: game-news-image-2013-7da3c849e0cbaccd920...fce738.jpg]Game Informer - 8/10 - "Riptide’s flaws are many, but they couldn’t hold me back from having a blast. Few games nail the visceral feel of melee combat and co-op fun like Dead Island. At its worst, an annoying hiccup breaks the immersion of the grizzly trek through a zombie-infested paradise. At its best, Riptide hits the same high notes as the original."

IGN - 7.2/10 - "I seriously love Dead Island Riptide for its satisfying zombie dismemberment and co-op, but technically, it's done nothing to build itself into a great game. Rather than fix the graphics and the performance problems that plagued the original two years ago, Techland slightly modified the setting and delivered a new character and more content. It’s a fun time, but there are no surprises or killer new features to make it an impressive package."

EGM - 6/10 - "Still, as much as I hated the glitches and lack of story development, there were times I couldn’t put Riptide down for hours upon hours. The sheer fun of the co-op zombie-slaughtering gameplay was strong enough to carry the burden. The fact that the rest of the game can’t live up to this promising foundation is nothing short of heartbreaking. It’s a reboot of a game that only came out two years ago. It’s a nightmarish expansion pack with only a handful of new gameplay elements and two new bugs for every one that’s been fixed. If this is your first experience with the franchise, then you might be able to look past some of the more glaring flaws, but if you played the first Dead Island, Riptide is a difficult game to recommend."

Destructoid - 5/10 - "Is Dead Island: Riptide a fun game? At times, yes. In terms of raw combat and power fantasy, it's just as good as Dead Island ... and it's just as bad at the same time. The bottom line is that there's no excuse for it not being superior. Being "just as good" isn't good enough, especially not when Dead Island had things on its side that Riptide doesn't. Those new to the series entirely will likely not notice the problems quite so much, and be as forgiving to it as newcomers were to Dead Island. While Riptide banks on you having loved the first, in actuality you have a lot more to gain if you've never touched it. If you played the first game, however, I'd recommend waiting for a real sequel, because Riptide fails to get away with pulling the same trick twice."

Giant Bomb - 2/5 - "The first Dead Island was long on good ideas but short on skillful execution, and while there's still a truly great game lurking in there somewhere, Riptide is not it. It's a shame Techland didn't take this opportunity to take a step back and figure out how to properly evolve this formula before iterating on the franchise again. Maybe that truly improved Dead Island will still come along someday, but in the meantime, Riptide feels like a game that didn't really need to be made."

Today's Lightning Deals are all game-themed as well, with the current deal being LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean on the DS for $15. As of this writing, the deal has about an hour to go.

Find a list of the remaining deals' start times (and our best guesses as to what the deals actually are) after the break.

NintendoWare Weekly: Adventure Island, Double Bloob

by on Dec 1st 2011 12:40PM

The 3DS's Virtual Console adds an extra layer of abstraction today, with the Game Boy port of the NES version of Adventure Island II (called, confusingly enough, "Adventure Island.") You can enjoy this Game Boy version of an NES game in a little Game Boy-looking window on your 3DS!

DSiWare features Double Bloob, a vertical shooter/puzzle game we first covered way back in 2007, years before there even was a DSiWare service. It's gone through a lot of changes since then, not the least of which was a departure of the development team from its former home at the infamous Nibris.

WiiWare Xmas Puzzle (EnjoyUp Games, 1-4 players, 500 Wii Points): It's the most wonderful time of the year to build holiday jigsaw puzzles.3DS eShop Adventure Island (Game Boy) (Hudson Soft, 1 player, $3.99): Master Higgins rides skateboards and dinosaurs in this game based on the NES's Adventure Island II.DSiWare Double Bloob (Bloober Team, 1 player, $4.99/500 DSi Points): Shoot the "Bloobs" descending from the sky, in order to rescue your pet dolphin.House MD Episode 5: Under the Big Top (Legacy Interactive, 1 player, $7.99/800 DSi Points): Legacy Interactive is quietly going off the rails. "A middle-aged circus manager is strangled by a horse, leading to a rash of unconnected symptoms."

September NPD: Madden, Gears, Dead Island are hits (Updated with Nintendo hardware numbers!)

by on Oct 13th 2011 8:25PM

It should come as no surprise that Madden NFL 12 beat everything else in NPD's software chart for the month of September, unless you're really not into sports games and forgot it came out. Second place is also pretty expected, with the massive rollout of Gears of War 3 massively rolling into people's homes. Third place, however, is a bit more interesting -- Dead Island, from semi-obscure publisher Deep Silver, outsold almost everything else based on the strength of that trailer and the word "zombies." Find the top ten after the break.

In hardware, Microsoft reported Xbox 360 takes the top hardware spot once again, touting 438,000 units sold in the month. Nintendo reports sales of 360,000 3DS units in the five week September reporting period, as well as 240,000 Wiis and 145,000 DS systems. Sony has not released official sales numbers for the PS3 or PSP.

In larger trends, total industry sales are down 6 percent year over year, with a mere $1.16 billion changing hands in September.

Top 10 best-selling games (US) for September 2011: Madden NFL 12 (360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP)Gears of War 3 (360)Dead Island (360, PS3, PC)FIFA Soccer 12 (360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP, 3DS)NHL 12 (360, PS3)Deus Ex: Human Revolution (360, PS3, PC)Resistance 3 (PS3)Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (Wii, 360, NDS, PS3, 3DS, PSP, PC)Call of Duty: Black Ops (360, PS3, NDS, Wii, PC)Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine (360, PS3, PC)

[PC, PS3, X360] Review Roundup - Dead Island

[PC, PS3, X360] Review Roundup - Dead Island
[Image: game-news-image-2011-d87ffb65f4e8fb6e34f...fc341.jpeg]Game Informer - 8.5/10 - "I’ve played a lot of zombie games in my time, and Dead Island scratched an itch I didn’t even know I had. Cooperative undead survival is nothing new to gaming, but exploring a gigantic zombie-infested island with friends is. I easily poured over 40 hours into my playthrough, and a new game plus promises even more entertainment. Rewarding character progression and the vast variety of weapons should appeal to anyone looking for a good time. If you’ve spent your time planning for the zombie apocalypse, Dead Island is the best option so far to test how long you’d last."

Eurogamer - 6/10 - "Dead Island is a deeply flawed game, but it's also clearly a low-budget game and one that has interesting ideas, often under-served by the bargain-basement code. Finding the diamonds in the rough demands a lot of patience, and enough investment in the base joys of zombie slaughter to tolerate the laundry list of flaws. I suspect this will be one of those games that will be justifiably mocked by the majority for its many flaws but embraced by a forgiving minority, and passionately defended for its underdog status. Neither response will be entirely wrong. Much like gnawing on human flesh, Dead Island's clumsy horror-action role-player is the definition of an acquired taste."

Destructoid - 7/10 - "Is Dead Island good? Yes it is ... but it isn't at the same time. It's inspired, but turgid. Brilliant, but flawed. Fun, but infuriating. Like the living dead itself, Dead Island is a contradiction from beginning to end. However, I feel you need to play it, because despite copying so much from infinitely smoother games, there's nothing quite like it on the market. That, itself, is yet another contradiction in the confused, conflicted, often completely beautiful mess that is Dead Island."

Joystiq - 3/5 - "I have to wonder if the game was rushed to shelves to take advantage of the heat generated by February's well-received teaser trailer. There's so much content in Dead Island, it's a real shame the work wasn't done to take it from functional to fun. Some of it works: There's a beautiful world to explore here, some genuinely neat ideas and cool weapons. But the end product too closely mirrors its antagonists: Shambling forward, but only just."

IGN - 8/10 - "Dead Island probably won't win any game of the year awards. It's got visual bugs, the controls take a bit to feel normal, and the presentation in general isn't up to snuff. But the game gets a lot right. There is a huge world to explore, thousands of zombies to kill, and tons of side quests to take. Here on the other side of a 25-hour playthrough -- where I skipped a lot of side quests after Act 1 -- I'm anxious to get back into Dead Island, and despite the game's flaws, that's not something I say often."

A bit underwhelming considering the extraordinary trailer, but not a complete failure at least. Looking forward to playing it once I finally open my disc tray to release Gears 3 from captivity. I found my wii!

Monkey Island episodes come to iPad, 4 and 5 available free with survey on Wii

by on Jun 22nd 2011 10:00PM

Telltale Games has posted an online survey for gamers researching a little bit about your buying and playing habits, and in return for completing it, you can grab copies of the Tales of Monkey Island episodes 4 and 5 on WiiWare for free. Just fill out the required questions over on SurveyMonkey Island (man we're funny), put in your Wii code, and boom, you're playing the last two episodes of the series for zero dollars.

What's that? You also want to play the first three, but didn't pick them up in that Steam sale? You're in luck -- the series is also coming the iPad. On that platform, the first episode is completely free, and the rest of the episodes are discounted to just $6.99 a piece. More information on that deal in the press release after the break. You'll notice the series has been renamed on Apple's tablet to "Monkey Island Tales," which Telltale says was only so they could put "Monkey Island" first in the title.

So that's the whole series for just two measly payments of just $6.99 (unless you don't have an iPad, in which case you'll have to wait). That's a whole lot of game for just chimp change. Telltale Games' award-winning Monkey Island Tales HD series is back on iPad with more swashbucklin' adventure than you can shake a wooden leg at!

And Telltale Games is offering iPad owners some serious booty! As of today the first episode of Monkey Island Tales HD is available for free on iPad until July 22nd! It's available and ready to plunder as you read this – so get to plundering!

And here be another bit of news...starting tomorrow (June 23rd) Monkey Island Tales HD Episodes 2-5 are available for $6.99 per episode on the AppStore. That's right mateys, the remainder of the entire Monkey Island Tales HD season - in four salty doses of high seas humor - will be available all at once for your downloading pleasure.

Telltale's trademark humor and adventure gameplay will delight Monkey Island fans old and new as the entire five-episode saga unfolds on iPad for the very first time. So be it high or low tide, weigh anchor, hoist the mizzen and head over to the App Store to get the best game series featuring the unlikely combination of an ancient tool and a clamshell to come to iPad!

NintendoWare Weekly: Super Adventure Island, House, Valet Parking 1989

by on May 30th 2011 9:55AM

How timely! One day before Takahashi Meijin leaves his post as Hudson Soft's resident PR expert/hero/mascot, Nintendo has released a Virtual Console game starring Takahashi (or, as he's called here, "Master Higgins"), namely Super Adventure Island.

On DSiWare, we get to experience one of the most delightfully random release days since the service started. There's a game about parking cars with an early GTA-style top-down view, an A-Team pastiche, and an episodic House, M.D. adventure game. Examine the full list of releases after the break.

WiiWare FAST - Racing League (Shin'en, 1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points): Futuristic hovercar racing, kinda like your Wipeouts or your F-Zeros.Demo: Bit. Trip Void (Aksys Games, 1-4 players, 0 Wii Points): Bit. Trip explores analog controls in this game of absorbing dots.Virtual Console Super Adventure Island (SNES, 1 player, Wii Points): Master Higgins, clad in a grass skirt and Hudson Soft hat, sets off to rescue Jeanie Jungle. We hope he can find a stone axe and a skateboard along the way!DSiWare House M.D. - Globetrotting (Legacy Interactive, 1 player, 800 DSi Points): Dr. House and his team have to identify and treat the mysterious illness befalling a reputation-obsessed TV host.B Team - Episode 1: Dust & Steel (Subdued Software, 1 player, 800 DSi Points): In 2011, a game was released about a crack commando unit. This 'humorous, action-packed squad-based shooter' promptly reminded us of a popular television program. Today, still available on DSiWare, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have free time, if nothing else sounds like fun, and if you can afford the 800 DSi Point cost, maybe you can hire ... The B-Team.Valet Parking 1989 (Zordix AB, 1 player, 500 DSi Points): Top-down car parking simulator, set to soundalikes of your favorite '80s tunes.
