[Multi] Patrice Désilets reportedly fired by Ubisoft after they snagged him back

[Image: game-news-image-2013-dd9e0ba349e581b436e...4d427d.jpg]
During the collapse of THQ, Ubisoft expressed interest in acquiring some of THQ's properties. However, they didn't stop there and managed to snap up roughly 170 staff from THQ Montréal as the dust settled; among these 170 staff members was Patrice Désilets.

For those who don't know Patrice Désilets worked with Ubisoft to design the first two Assassin's Creed titles before departing to work on new projects. There was a lot of controversy over the acquisition of THQ Montréal staff with many wondering if Désilets would return to work for Ubisoft. In the end, he did end up joining the company but that relationship seems to have already concluded.

Kotaku received a statement from Ubisoft confirming that Désilets had departed once again.

“The acquisition of THQ Montréal in January allowed Ubisoft to welcome 170 experienced developers, including Patrice Désilets, to our existing and renowned workforce," said an Ubisoft representative.

"Unfortunately, since the acquisition, the good faith discussions between Patrice and Ubisoft aimed at aligning Patrice’s and the studio’s visions have been inconclusive. As a result, Patrice has left the studio. Our priorities remain with the teams already hard at work on projects in development. They are at the root of Ubisoft Montréal’s past and future successes.”

So, what's going on? Well, Désilets was working on a new game called 1666 during his time at THQ Montréal but Ubisoft currently refuses to comment on the fate of this project now that Désilets has left.

Speaking of which, Désilets also threw out a comment today claiming that he was fired and that the decision did not appear to be mutual.

"Contrary to any statements made earlier today, this morning I was terminated by Ubisoft. I was notified of this termination in person, handed a termination notice and was unceremoniously escorted out of the building by two guards without being able to say goodbye to my team or collect my personal belongings," said Désilets. "This was not my decision."

"Ubisoft’s actions are baseless and without merit. I intend to fight Ubisoft vigorously for my rights, for my team and for my game."

I feel like this is only the start of a struggle between Ubisoft and Désilets, but we'll have to wait and see what unfolds over the next few days.

Nintendo cuts hardware sales targets after shipping 3M Wii U consoles in 2012

by Sinan Kubba Writer RSS on Jan 30th 2013 4:30AM

Nintendo adjusted its annual net profit outlook from ¥6 billion to ¥14 billion (around $154 million) on the back of a weakening yen, with the company posting a nine-month operating loss of ¥5.8 billion ($63.7 million) compared to the corresponding figure of ¥48.4 billion for the last fiscal year. However, Nintendo's end-of-fiscal-year hardware targets took a big hit on the back of shipping 3.06 million Wii U consoles in 2012.

Nintendo now projects a figure of 4 million for Wii U by the end of its fiscal year on March 31, down from the 5.5 million the company predicted in October 2012. 3DS shipments are now expected to hit 15 million for the year, down from initial projections of 18.5 million.

Nintendo has now shifted 29.84 million units of its handheld since launch. Meanwhile, the Wii's life-to-date figures are up to 99.38 million, with 3.53 million units shipped across the nine month period.

Regards software, Nintendo shifted 11.69 million Wii U games since the console's launch on November 18, The best-performing games were the bundled-in Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U, coming in at 2.33 million and 2.01 million respectively.

On the 3DS front, Nintendo shipped 39.56 million units of the handheld across the nine months. Pokémon Black/White 2 soared to a total of 7.63 million on the back of almost 3 million sales in Japan alone, while New Super Mario Bros. 2 is at 5.96 million. Animal Crossing: New Leaf sits at 2.73 million, largely thanks to its popularity with Japan's female demographic. All figures are as of December 31, 2012.

Report: EA shuts down Bright Light after consultation process

by on Jan 5th 2012 7:45PM

EA's Bright Light Studio in the UK has been officially shuttered, Develop reports. In October Bright Light was in the midst of a formal consultation process, a period of time required by UK law before a company can shut down completely, dependent on how many employees it has. Bright Light, responsible for three of the most recent Harry Potter games, closed late in 2010, Develop says.

EA said previously that it would consider Bright Light employees for positions at other EA Studios, and Develop reports some have indeed moved to EA's Criterion and Playfish, while others have joined nearby studios Jagex and Supermassive Games.

We have contacted EA for confirmation on the closure.

[PC, PS3, X360] Commander Shepard is leaving us behind after Mass Effect 3

[PC, PS3, X360] Commander Shepard is leaving us behind after Mass Effect 3
[Image: game-news-image-2011-28df0746c4ef9191d0c...5a2079.jpg]
Mass Effect 3 is set to conclude the epic sci-fi trilogy next March, but we know that BioWare is eager to continue the franchise in some form. But what we don't know is if the franchise will continue
forward with Shepard, however now we have confirmation that it won't.

Dr. Ray Muzyka has confirmed this fact with PC Gamer, "After this, Commander Shepard's story is complete." He continues on claiming that he/she will not be present in any future Mass Effect titles. So, how do you think Shepard's career will end? Happy or depressing? Either way, it seems that BioWare will have to take great care with rounding out the story of Shepard.

Are you excited for Mass Effect 3?

[3DS] Nintendo execs taking pay-cuts after poor 3DS performance

[3DS] Nintendo execs taking pay-cuts after poor 3DS performance
[Image: game-news-image-2011-69163930dc256234698...67928c.jpg]
The 3DS hasn't been as successful as many were hoping, especially Nintendo. They are slicing the price and offering up free games for early adopters but they are also taking this upon themselves as well

Satoru Iwata is taking it upon himself and giving himself about 50% of a pay cut after the disappointment. Iwata's last annual compensation was about ¥137 million (or $1.8 million), which includes salary and performance-based compensation. He didn't announce specifics but it can be expected that he'll be receiving considerably less than this. he won't be alone either as Senior Managing Directors Shigeru Miyamoto and Shinji Hatano will take 30% cuts to their salary and other executives will lose about 20%.

As you can see Nintendo is taking this situations very seriously, so hopefully the 3DS will benefit greatly from the new price that it has received.

I don't see any Nintendo of America taking any hits for their failings overseas. I really respect these guys for doing this.

They're not in financial trouble? Their annual profits were down 300m this year, and the 3DS is flopping. I would be willing to bet that even with the price drop they won't see many more sales of the device. [Image: MW7519.png] MW7519 Offline

RE: [3DS] Nintendo execs taking pay-cuts after poor 3DS performance
You act as if these things mean nothing. That's just not true. You want to know why Nintendo's stock price dropped so dramatically all of sudden? Why they're 3DS sales started chugging up? Oh yeah, because they aren't doing well.

Now you can say "Oh, but the 3DS sold 4m units in 4 months, how is that bad?", well, let me see if I can explain this to you in a way you'll understand: despite selling a re-packaged DS with new graphics for $249.99, Nintendo still managed to lose 300m dollar compared to last year. Now granted, not all of that is a result of the 3DS, but considering all of their executives took gigantic pay cuts JUST BECAUSE 3DS is NOT selling well, I don't think you need me to tell you that 3DS is flopping.

I also recall someone telling me that once Ocarina came out that 3DS sales would sky rocket. I also remember saying that they wouldn't- and I was right. The increased by, what, 10,000 units for that week? Yeah, big deal.

Now, I'm not saying 3DS won't start to do better once it gets a price slash and more games- it will. But it will never achieve the sales of the DS. It's too pricey, it's much harder to program for, 3D is a complete gimmick, and its getting turned out by iPhone games. Not to mention, Vita is going to steal most of its holiday thunder.

Just wait. You can call me a fool now, but 2 years down the road, I don't see Nintendo being in such a great position.

Nintendo stock down 5 percent after Wii U reveal

by on Jun 8th 2011 12:00PM

While our feelings were ... oh, let's be nice and say "mixed" on Nintendo's just-announced Wii U traders on the Tokyo Stock Exchange were pretty much clear about their distaste. Nintendo stock closed down five percent yesterday after the company's E3 keynote, settling at 16,970 yen ($212.44) -- a low the company hasn't seen since before the launch of the original Wii.

It's not good news for Big N, but we're talking about a company that's made its fortunes on seeing opportunities where others don't. And hey, look at it this way, Nintendo: History has proven we'll eventually drop our defenses, conquer our trepidation and buy one anyway. So you've got us.

[PS3] Anonymous coming after Sony over Geohot incident

[PS3] Anonymous coming after Sony over Geohot incident That's right. The hacker group known as 'Anonymous' have picked their next target, this time it is Sony. Anonymous have taken issue with how Sony has handled the problems with Geohot and fail0verflow. As of late, Anonymous have been getting involved in more of this situations such as when they stood opposed to those who were against whistleblower website, Wikileaks.

Anonymous claim that Sony have committed an unforgivable offence against free speech and internet freedom.

"You have abused the judicial system in an attempt to censor information about how your products work. You have victimized your own customers merely for possessing and sharing information, and continue to target those who seek this information. In doing so you have violated the privacy of thousands of innocent people who only sought the free distribution of information. Your suppression of this information is motivated by corporate greed and the desire for complete control over the actions of individuals who purchase and use your products, at least when those actions threaten to undermine the corrupt stranglehold you seek to maintain over copywrong, oops, 'copyright'."

"Your corrupt business practices are indicative of a corporate philosophy that would deny consumers the right to use products they have paid for, and rightfully own, in the manner of their choosing. Perhaps you should alert your customers to the fact that they are apparently only renting your products? In light of this assault on both rights and free expression, Anonymous, the notoriously handsome rulers of the internet, would like to inform you that you have only been "renting" your web domains. Having trodden upon Anonymous' rights, you must now be trodden on."

If you disagree with the disciplinary actions against your private parts domains, then we trust you can also understand our motivations for these actions. You own your domains. You paid for them with your own money. Now Anonymous is attacking your private property because we disagree with your actions. And that seems, dare we say it, 'wrong.' Sound familiar?

On a potentially related note it appears that the PSN will be undergoing sporadic maintenance today,Sony announced this via their Twitter account. Problems were also reported with the PlayStation website, with CVG reporting that earlier the US PlayStation Blog was completely down but it seems to be fine now.

Either way, it could be a bumpy day for Sony.

[PC] Bulletstorm Demo Will Arrive on PC... After Launch

[PC] Bulletstorm Demo Will Arrive on PC... After Launch [Image: game-news-image-2011-a67fc5b17be4553ee90...fcbbf6.jpg]
PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 owners were treated to a pre-release demo for Epic's upcoming Bulletstorm, which left PC gamers out in the cold wondering if they'd get a chance to test the game out.

Thankfully, Epic's own Mark Rein has tweeted that while it won't be available before launch it "should be available shortly after". The console market appears to be the target audience for this title (especially the Xbox 360 version of the 'Epic Edition' coming with a Gears of War 3 beta invite) and it also isn't the first time a demo has arrived after the launch of the game itself.

All things considered though, are there any PC gamers genuinely annoyed about it coming afterwards? Or are you just excited to get a chance to take it for a spin before deciding if you'll put down the money for the product?

Iwata: Zelda Skyward Sword expected to launch after Ocarina of Time 3D

by on Jan 31st 2011 11:30AM

It seems that the hero of Hyrule will remain bound to Nintendo's forthcoming 3D handheld in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time before turning his sword skyward at some point after, the company's third quarter financial report indicates. "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has been in the process of being remade for Nintendo 3DS, and this Nintendo 3DS version is expected to hit the market earlier [than Skyward Sword]," Nintendo head Satoru Iwata states in the piece.

Though Skyward Sword apparently won't launch until sometime after OoT (which is expected sometime after June's E3, outside of Nintendo's "launch window"), the report also reveals that Miyamoto's team is currently "entering into the final completion stage" of the Wii title. That being the case, we'll expect a much more impressive demonstration of the game at Nintendo's E3 presser later this year.

Woman diagnosed with Parkinson's after Wii Fit reveals poor ...

Woman diagnosed with Parkinson's after Wii Fit reveals poor balance,

Most people who step onto a Wii Fit and realize how off-balance their stance is can easily correct it and get on with their lives. But 54-year-old Julie Wilks has a very different story.

The British mother of two bought Wii Fit but had trouble playing it - her balance leaned heavily to one side. When she started experiencing other symptoms, she recalled the game's feedback, and went to see her doctor.

Long story short, Mrs. Wilks was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.

"It's quite amazing that a computer game was able to point out there was a problem," she told a local newspaper interview.

Wilks never had any serious health concerns before playing Wii Fit so had no reason to look into the possibility that she might have a serious illness. Quite a story, isn't it?

Wilks isn't taking the news sitting down, either. She's actively working on the battle to find a cure, and has set up a website called Give A Little Sunshine to raise awareness about the disease.

(Note to hypochondriacs: If you also have trouble balancing on the Wii Balance Board, you probably just have poor balance.)
