ALBUM REVIEW – World 1-2: The Complete Collection

Album review by Steve Cullum

world1-2_collection_koopa-soundworks_discfun

Album – World 1-2: The Complete Collection
Artist – Various Artists
Label – Koopa Soundworks
Obtained – Review Copy from Scarlet Moon Promotions

What would you say if I told you there was a collection of 34 tracks from various video games available via download or a three-disc set? What if I told you that list included songs from Mario, Sonic, Metroid, Zelda, Fire Emblem, and more? What if I told you many of the tracks are performed by the original artists? If you’re getting excited, you may want to read on to find out what Koopa Soundworks’ “World 1-2: The Complete Collection” is all about.

Content

I must start out talking about the sheer size of this collection. It brings past projects in with new ones into a massive 34 tracks from various games throughout history. It ranges from Tetris and Mega Man X3 to Street Fighter II and Metroid Prime. The collection itself is quite vast. Despite your favorite game genre, platform, or composer, most listeners will find something they enjoy. In fact, if you are like me, you will also increase your preference list as you listen to the rest of the track list.

From a Nintendo standpoint, they did a great job of collecting songs from the top franchises. You have first-party games like Super Mario World, Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid Prime, Fire Emblem, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. You also have third-parties like Mega Man (3, 5, & X3), Tetris, and Street Fighter II. Not only did they pick popular franchises, but they also chose some of the popular songs from each game. You will definitely recognize the songs from Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Mega Man, for example. All in all, it seems that any Nintendo fan will be delighted to hear tunes from their favorite game.

(The full tracklist is available at the bottom of this review.)

Production Quality

While this is a collection, meaning that many different artists and groups have come together, the overall quality is extremely high. Many of the songs have a full orchestra, while others seem like they are composed using computers. Either way, they all sound fantastic. Many of the songs are even remixed, in order to add their own syle and flavor to the popular tune. Sure, some fans may not enjoy this, but I believe most will be very pleased with the outcome. It will be hard to complain about the quality of the music and the overall production value in World 1-2.

Value

With 34 tracks, it is easy to assume this collection will cost you over $30. It is, however, lower than that. You can grab the three-disc set for $24 (USD), or you can download the entire collection for a mere $16. For those of you math fanatics out there, that is about 47 cents per track. On top of that, they even give you the option, via BandCamp.com, to download the songs one-at-a-time for $1 per track. Honestly, I believe downloading the full album is the best value. Even though $24 might not seem like a large sum of cash, it is significantly more than the download-only price. Still, it might be worth it for those who want higher than mp3-quality sound or those who want a limited-edition package. In the end, all the options make it a great value for any video game music fan.

FINAL SCORE: 9.5 out of 10

World 1-2 is a great collection of video game music from a long list of fantastic composers and artists. Fans of Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Fire Emblem will certainly be pleased with this collection. In fact, it may even get them, if they haven’t already, to broaden their tastes for all video game music. If you are looking for a large collection that will not break the bank, go ahead and order World 1-2: The Complete Collection from Koopa Soundworks.

+ Large and vast collection.
+ High production value.
+ Remixes add new flavor.

- Remixes might be too much for some fans.
– Not enough Nintendo music (only halfway kidding; we are a Nintendo site, after all).

[PS3] Konami reveals Metal Gear Solid 'Legacy Collection' for June
[Image: game-news-image-2013-b5037416f2d055774d7...b343f6.jpg]
Metal Gear fans might find that they have quite a substantial hole in their wallets. A year and a half after releasing the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Konami has announced a bigger and better collection in the "Legacy Collection" due to hit the PlayStation 3 in North and South America this June.

The Legacy Collection includes the original Metal Gear Solid, HD versions of Metal Gear Solid 2, 3, and Peace Walker, the "Trophy Edition" of Metal Gear Solid 4, and topped off with Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions and a couple of digital graphic novels by Ashley Wood.

"We wanted to give Metal Gear Solid fans the opportunity to experience the series from beginning to end, all on one console," said Konami Digital Entertainment president Tomoyuki Tsuboi in a press release. "With the collection's multiple titles, players can truly see how Metal Gear Solid evolved into the critically acclaimed and beloved franchise it is today."

A price for the bundle has not been announced, nor is it clear if or when the bundle might hit the rest of the world.

Kirby's Dream Collection expectorated into North America Sept. 16

by Writer RSS on Jun 22nd 2012 7:45PM

Kirby's Dream Collection expectorated into North America Sept 16
Kirby's Dream Collection will dreamily collect several classic Kirby games starting September 16 in North America. The Wii set includes emulated versions of Kirby's Dream Land 1, 2, and 3, Kirby's Adventure, Kirby Super Star, and Kirby 64.

Unlike the Super Mario All-Stars special edition, which was just an SNES ROM on a disc, this also comes with exclusive new material, like challenge stages in the Kirby's Return to Dream Land engine and a virtual museum/timeline. The collection also includes a soundtrack and a booklet.

Here's what you get in Kirby: 20th Anniversary Special Collection

by Writer RSS on Jun 17th 2012 1:30PM

Nintendo has been pretty quiet about that anniversary collection of Kirby games for the Wii ever since it was announced way back in April, but now the full list of games included in the collection, as well as the collection's Japanese title, have been released by Famitsu and translated into English by Andriasang.

Kirby: 20th Anniversary Special Collection will include Kirby's Dream Land, Kirby's Dream Land 2, Kirby's Adventure, Kirby Super Star, Kirby's Dream Land 3 and Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. The collection also includes a timeline and soundtrack, and will launch in Japan on July 19, according to Andriasang. Alas, no North American release information has surfaced as of yet.

[Vita] Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for Vita gets enhanced with touch controls

[Vita] Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for Vita gets enhanced with touch controls
Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, as you probably know, is making its way to PlayStation Vita this June. The venture is a group effort between Bluepoint Games (God of War HD Collection), Konami and Armature (comprised of ex-Retro Studios staff) and is bring a few neat perk to the Vita version. That perk is that both games will be enhanced with touch control input, check out the new trailer from Japan below.
So, what do you think? To be fair, this decision made sense, it'd have been strange to have not taken advantage of the touch pads. It is difficult to judge how it'll play out until we get our own hands on it.

Additionally, as a reminder, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for the Vita doesn't include Peace Walker in the package.

[PS3, X360] Review Roundup - Silent Hill HD Collection

[PS3, X360] Review Roundup - Silent Hill HD Collection
[Image: game-news-image-2012-f9e8e84f74a13dcc4b0...a36301.jpg]IGN - 9/10 - "Silent Hill HD Collection reminds adults that, like children, they have deep, irrational fears. Silent Hill 2 remains a modern masterpiece, and the HD Collection proves it will stand the test of time regardless of technical or control constraints. Silent Hill 3, while not quite in the league of its predecessor, presents a similarly strong understanding of survival horror. Both are made from the same stuff that gives us nightmares."

Game Informer - 8/10 - "My feelings about the core games remain unchanged from the first times I played them. Silent Hill 2 is still the best the series has to offer, with an intriguing story of a man searching for his dead wife and the horrifying introduction of the now iconic Pyramid Head. James Sunderland’s quest becomes a little ambiguous and misguided at times (shoving soda cans down a garbage chute to dislodge trash?), but overall it’s a journey worth taking. Silent Hill 3 is one of the weakest entries in the series, but still delivers spectacular scares. One chilling encounter with a decapitated mannequin torso still sticks with me."

Gamespot - 7/10 - "Both games play the same as they did before: James is still trying to find his dead wife, and poor Heather just wants to get home from the mall. In today's action-packed world of survival horror, going back to the slow, methodical controls of a Silent Hill game can be difficult. But in a strange way, the stiffness works to the game's benefit. Your character isn't a superhero and can be easily overwhelmed when two or more enemies attack. James and Heather get tired, miss gun shots, take slow, deliberate swings with their weapons, and reflect the capabilities of a normal person."

OXM - 7/10 - "It’d be a shame if you let such anachronistic problems prevent you from soaking up all that disturbing ambiance, though. Silent Hill HD Collection is hardly well-rounded, but its tense manipulation of mood still rattles all the right nerves."

Destructoid - 3/10 - "Konami has long had a habit of mishandling its properties, buts the inability to treat even these classics on the Silent Hill HD Collection with a modicum of respect is staggering. The disc feels like a rushed and sloppy cash-in, squirted out to exploit fans who have stuck with the series through years of drivel. It does a disservice to two amazing pieces of interactive art and spits on the legacy of what once was the crown jewel of an entire genre. Incomplete, glitchy, and visually degraded, Silent Hill HD Collection is Konami's greatest insult to the series."

Kid Icarus: Uprising AR Card Scan Collection [137 Scans Currently!]

Kid Icarus: Uprising releases this Friday in the US, and one huge aspect of the game are the AR Cards. The game comes with 6 random AR Cards out of a possible 20, but Nintendo has said there are hundreds to collect in Series 1 (we know there are at least 404 AR Cards based on the numbering). In some cases, there will be booster packs distributed at various events and since it may be hard to collect them all, I thought it would be beneficial to compile a list of all the cards with links to scans of them so you can print them out and use them. I will continue to update this list as we get more scans. Enjoy!

UPDATE: I have 137 scans and 173 cards listed (out of at least 404 cards), as of March 22nd.

Unfortunately it has been confirmed that Konami's Silent Hill HD Collection has once again suffered a change in release. Originally slated for a late January release, it has now fallen back into March.

It started with Amazing sending out notifications that the game had been delayed until the 6th of March, with both Gamefly and Gamestop following close behind. Upon being contacted Konami did confirm that the game had slipped back into March but didn't provide a solid release date.

They did confirm, however, that next week they would be announcing release dates for the major Silent Hill releases due in the next few months.

Disappointing that we must wait yet again, luckily it will be worth it.

[PS3, X360] Tomm Hulett walks your through some Silent Hill 3 in the HD Collection

[PS3, X360] Tomm Hulett walks your through some Silent Hill 3 in the HD Collection
Shut up, Tomm Hulett. Just shut up! We want to hear more of what is happening in the video, not listen to the voice of someone who wasn't there. Okay, you know what... I'll calm down. Here's the video.
The sounds are refreshing to hear after recent Silent Hill titles, but once again they dodge letting us hear Heather's new voice actor. I suppose it is because the original was perfect and they couldn't track her down, so they'll let that knife sink in when we play the game.

You'll be able to play two of the greatest survival-horror games this January on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in high definition.

I wish they let us hear more of the video, as well. I admit, I'm actually curious and more open to hear the new voices, not so much as to compare anymore, but just to hear the changes. Although, if I were to compare, I'm confident the original will remain top-notch to me.

Also, I wonder if they noticed that Heather's light seems to go through her?

Thanks, big_al0591 for this sig pic! ^^

Coins? Magical baubles? Caged critters and distressed nymphs? They're all just points in that game completion percentage, you know.

[PS3, X360] Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker bringing online co-op to HD Collection

[PS3, X360] Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker bringing online co-op to HD Collection
Everyone knows that Peace Walker had a decent focus on the co-op feature, except for one problem: it was on PSP and required you to have the adhoc party app and a PS3 connected to the internet. That will now be a thing of the past with Hideo Kojima confirming that the version coming in the HD Collection will have easier access to online.

The mode is being called CO-OPS and will allow users to participate in co-operative missions with up to four players. Hideo Kojima even confirmed that the game will still run at a very smooth 60 frames per second with four players participating.

Just remember how lucky we we are, because even though this is part of our Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, in Japan it is being sold separately.

Army of Shadows: The Criterion Collection [Blu-ray]

Army of Shadows: The Criterion Collection [Blu-ray]Who would've guessed that the best film of 2006 would be a 37-year-old thriller about the French Resistance during World War II? Hailed as a masterpiece by an overwhelming majority of reputable critics, Jean-Pierre Melville's Army of Shadows wasn't officially released in America until 2006 (hence its appearance on many of that year's top-ten lists), but its reputation as a French classic was already well-established throughout Europe. Fully restored in 2004 and released in the U.S. by Rialto Pictures, it represents the gold standard of films about the French Resistance, based upon Joseph Kessel's 1943 novel and imbued with personal touches by Melville, an Alsatian Jew whose own involvement in the Resistance qualifies Army of Shadows as a semi-autobiographical exercise in somber nostalgia, as indicated by an opening quote echoing Melville's ironic belief that memories of Nazi occupation needn't always be traumatic.

Having lived through this history, Melville doesn't treat it lightly; in Army of Shadows, the threat of death hangs over every scene like a shroud. Unfolding with flawless precision, the plot begins in 1942 and focuses on a small, secretive band of Resistance fighters led by Gerbier (Lino Ventura), whose intuitive sense of danger lends additional suspense to the film's dark, atmospheric study of grace under pressure. While working in the classical tradition of the Hollywood films he admired, Melville breaks from convention with lengthy, deliberately paced scenes in which tension builds to a subtle yet almost unbearable intensity. With the possible exception of a brief and wryly humorous scene involving Resistance leader (and future Prime Minister) Gen. Charles de Gaulle, every scene in Army of Shadows supports Melville's predominant themes of solitude and futility. Melville's visually and thematically bleak outlook may prove challenging for some, but Army of Shadows is remarkably beautiful in its own way, and it gains power with each additional viewing through flawless development of memorable characters played by a first-rate cast. Especially memorable is Simone Signoret as Gerbier's boldly pragmatic ally Mathilde, a woman in a war of men, with a tragic vulnerability that ultimately decides her fate. As intellectually stimulating as it is thrilling to experience, Army of Shadows represents the triumphant zenith of Melville's posthumous recognition as a world-class auteur. Thanks to the Criterion Collection, this masterpiece can now be widely appreciated, along with Criterion's previous DVD releases of Melville's earlier classics Bob Le Flambeur, Le Samourai, and Le Cercle Rouge. --Jeff Shannon

[CC'11, PS3] Silent Hill HD Collection off-screen trailer footage, two screens

[CC'11, PS3] Silent Hill HD Collection off-screen trailer footage, two screens
[Image: game-news-image-2011-afd879d79acddd21d60...846e93.png]
Konami took the Silent Hill entourage (Silent Hill: Downpour and a trailer for the Silent Hill HD Collection) on the road for Comic-Con. One fan managed to catch the trailer for the HD collection, which is still without a release date (be warned, it is cam-recorded off-screen footage).
Konami also released two screens from the Silent Hill 2 HD remaster as well, while they don't showcase too much it will certainly give a jolt of nostalgia to those who played this game back in the days of the PlayStation 2. The remasters feature high definition textures, trophy / achievement support, newly recorded voice acting (watched over by series regular Mary Elizabeth McGlynn) and, unfortunately, still no concrete release date. Have you ventured into Silent Hill as James Sunderland or Heather Mason yet? If not, then your chance to do so is quickly approaching.

[PS3] The Last Guardian, Ico/SotC Collection Delayed

[PS3] The Last Guardian, Ico/SotC Collection Delayed [Image: game-news-image-2011-ea32a1753bf196366a8...405a61.jpg]
PlayStation 3 owners looking forward to the HD ports of Team Ico's classics Ico and Shadow of the Colossus as well as the highly anticipated The Last Guardian will have to wait longer than initially thought, Sony announced today.

The Ico/Shadow of the Colossus Collection was due for release this spring followed by The Last Guardian in the fall, but director Fumito Ueda said in a statement today that the games simply require more time: "I announced at last year’s Tokyo Game Show that the release timing of The Last Guardian which is currently being developed would be holiday 2011. However, to provide more challenging and better quality of content to users and to fulfill First Party Studio’s obligations, I decided to postpone its release timing. All the members of my production team are working together at a fast pace to develop and release the game in First Party Studio quality. I sincerely apologize to all the customers who have been waiting for 'The Last Guardian' for so long, but I beg for your patience. I will also announce the new release timing at a later time.

It's already been nearly six years since Shadow of the Colossus was released on PlayStation 2, what's a little bit longer? If it turns out as good as their last two games, I'm sure fans won't mind. Expect more details, and hopefully a new release date, at E3 in June.

Silent Hill soundtrack collection is frighteningly huge

by on Feb 23rd 2011 11:30PM

For the next entry in its outlandishly enormous CD box set series, Konami is releasing a collection of music from the Silent Hill series. The Silent Hill Sounds Box, despite its name, isn't just nine discs full of radio static; it's actually eight discs of game soundtracks, from the original through Silent Hill: The Arcade, with a ninth disc full of trailers.

The ¥13,230 ($160) set also includes a booklet full of concept art. It'll be released in Japan on March 16, but is unlikely to make it into even the least haunted towns in America.
