Kirby-themed bubblegum record blown away at PAX

We were unsure Nintendo could rustle up enough blowers to blow a world record. But, like the bubblegum, we were blown away, as was the previous record of 304 achieved by Kirkwood Community College in 2010. We're sorry, Kirkwood, but 304 to 536 just blows.

[3DS] Enterbrain: 3DS shatters monthly sales record in Japan
![[Image: game-news-image-2012-4759b89c6f007699afb...37435a.jpg]](/game-news-image-2012-4759b89c6f007699afb0f4e56637435a.jpg)
3DS had a rough start, I don't think anyone would deny that. But just this month it has really solidified that those days are in the past now, as it completely blew away all the competition in Japan over the December period.
The Japanese tracking firm, Enterbrain, says that the handheld sold a staggering 1,492,931 between November 28th and December 25th. Those are the highest figures ever recorded since they started in 1997. December was also the seventh month straight that the 3DS had topped Japanese sales.
To add some perspective to this news, second place was held by Sony's newly released PlayStation Vita. The Vita managed to sell 402,794 since the December 17th launch, claiming a distant second.
Whilst it is a bit early to say the 3DS is definitely out of the woods everywhere, I think it is definitely the case in Japan.

November NPD: A new record, with Xbox 360 joined by MW3 and Skyrim on top (Update 2: Sony PR added)
It's a little good, a little bad with this year's November 2011 NPD results. While "unit sales grew for console hardware, as well as console, portable, and PC software," NPD analyst Anita Frazier warns that "a decline in average retail price in all categories" besides portable hardware resulted in dollar sales that were flat compared to last November. That said, November 2011 "marks the best November on record for sales of new physical content," besting the previous record holder, November 2008.
Unsurprisingly, the Xbox 360 was the top selling piece of gear for the month and Frazier notes that the "gap between 360 sales and sales of the next best selling platform was the largest we've seen since December 2008 when the Nintendo DS was the top selling system." Microsoft Chief of Interactive Entertainment Aaron Greenberg later added via Twitter that the Xbox 360 sold 1.7 million consoles during the month of November, up 23% year over year. For the month, Nintendo announced it sold more than 860,000 Wii systems, more than 795,000 Nintendo 3DS systems and more than 350,000 Nintendo DS systems.
Meanwhile, Sony declined to provide specific sales numbers for the PS3. According to Sony PR chief Patrick Seybold, "PlayStation 3 is off to a phenomenal start to the holiday season, recording the best ever Black Friday sales period in the console's five-year history. According to the November NPD report the PS3 saw a 70% increase in hardware and a 30% increase in software year-over-year." The PS3 sold 530,000 units last year, which would situate PS3 sales for November 2011 in the neighborhood of 901,000 units.
In the software arena, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 took its perch at the top of the charts, besting Black Ops "by about 7%," while Skyrim managed "a five-fold increase over Oblivion's first month sales" coming in just a half-million units short of matching its predecessor's lifetime sales. Other newcomers include single SKU exclusives like Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception in seventh place and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword in ninth.

Record Zelda, Mario 3DS sales over Thanksgiving
Sales figures for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in the US show strong numbers for console retail, as well as two new sales records for Nintendo.
Zelda: Skyward Sword’s impressive 535,000 sales since it hit American shelves on November 20 makes it the fastest selling Zelda title ever, whilst Super Mario 3D Land has sold over 500,000 copies since its November 11 launch in the territory, making it the fastest-selling handheld Mario title in the company’s history.
Those software sales fueled a massive rise of 352 per cent in 3DS units sold last week, USA Today reports.
“What this has been able to do is drive our Nintendo 3DS business in only eight months to surpass the full first year volume of the original DS and we still have the bulk of the holiday to go,” said Reggie Fils-Aime.
“We still have the launch of Mario Kart 7 to continue driving our full-year sales on Nintendo 3DS.”
It wasn’t just the 3DS which saw the benefits. The Wii sold more units this Black Friday period than in any other previously, shifting 500,000 consoles over the weekend.
“We know that Black Friday and that entire week is a key selling week, and it is important for products like ours to have a jump in momentum, and we were fortunate to see that,” continued Fils-Aime.
“For us, it really was driven by unique and powerful software and what gives us confidence is that we still have more software to launch in the balance of this holiday period.”
According to figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association, console sales were up across the board for the period. Consumer electronics were the second most popular purchase group over the the weekend, according to the association’s interim report, trailing only clothing.
48 per cent of all shoppers bought electronics, with consoles, mp3 players, televisions and digital cameras all proving popular.
“Black Friday shopping has fast become a Thanksgiving weekend tradition, like football or a post-Turkey dinner nap, for millions of shoppers,” CEA chief economist Shawn DuBravac.
Tweet“The holiday shopping season got off to a strong start as many hit the stores or went online to kick-off their holiday shopping as soon as they finished Thanksgiving dessert. These bargain hunters were able to find the deals they were after.”

Activision enjoys record revenues in Q2, digital represents 37% of sales
Digital sales, like those Call of Duty: Black Ops map packs, saw a 27 percent increase year over year. Digital represented 37 percent of the company's total net revenues, or $423 million in the quarter. Don't take that to mean retail is dead to Activision: $660 million (an increase of 13 percent) comes from ye olde shoppe, though part of that 58 percent of the company's revenues still goes into champagne baths and caviar breakfasts.

[X360] Kinect sells 10 million, sets record
Microsoft are pretty happy with themselves at the moment, deservedly so. It appears that their motion peripheral, Kinect, has set a new milestone. The device recently sprinted beyond 10 million sold as well as 10 million Kinect games sold as well.
The number is impressive due to the amount of time it took to achieve those figures, in fact it looks as though it has even set a new record. With the support of the Guinness World Records Microsoft is claiming that it is the fastest selling consumer electronics device ever.
The device sold an 133,333 units per day for a grand total of 8 million units in the first 60 days on shelves between November 4th 2010 and January 3rd 2011. Since then the numbers have slowed a little, but Microsoft is promising that there is more killer software for the peripheral on the way.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 sets franchise record atop UK charts
After two weeks as king of the mountain (standing gallantly atop a pile of Necromorphs), Dead Space 2's Isaac Clarke took the long way through an air duct and ended up in second place. The rest of the top five is some kind of late-2010 flashback, as FIFA 11, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood occupy spots three through five, respectively.
Last week's big mover was Ubisoft's Dance Juniors, a "Kidz Bop" version of its unstoppable Just Dance franchise, which jumped 290 percent in its second week, just narrowly missing entry into the top ten at spot 12. We've placed a video of the game after the break to see what all the fuss is about, along with the UK top ten.
