Shadow of the Eternals Officially on Hold

shadow-of-the-eternals_wide-image-facebook

Earlier this year, many developers from the original team behind “Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem” (GameCube) announced their desire to resurrect the game with a spiritual successor called, “Shadow of the Eternals,” for Wii U. Their Kickstarter campaign, however, did not meet its goal, and there has been some controversy surrounding one of their (now previous) employees, Ken McCulloh. On Friday, Precursor Games’ chief creative officer, Denis Dyack went to their forums to say the project is officially on hold, saying, “We feel it needs a rest.” Here is the rest of what he had to say:

It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to put the Shadow of the Eternals project on hold. We are very happy with what we have accomplished both as a group and with the community. The community has blown us away and was the one thing that kept us going through it all – we cannot thank you enough.

Many of us will be taking a break. For those who are not aware, we all worked on this project as a labor of love and self financed 100% of everything for a over a year to try to make Shadow of the Eternals a reality. Although we did not succeed on doing this, we succeeded in making many friends and starting something that we hope provided value for those involved. We have no regrets.

Denis, Phil and Aaron have decided to continue to run the forums for those who wish to stay hang out and talk. Denis, Phil and Aaron will also be taking a break but will be around posting and talking with everyone when they can. Others from Precursor will also be popping in from time to time.

Is the project dead? No, but we feel it needs a rest too. We have all agreed as a group that when and if the time is right we will get together and start it up again.

Keep your head high everyone and remember what we have accomplished together.

Hey, guess what? It's time for the Kickstarter re-launch for Precursor Games' ambitious new project, Shadow of the Eternals.

A press release has also confirmed that David Hayter, best known for playing the role of Solid Snake and previously Big Boss in the Metal Gear Solid franchise, will be taking on the role of Paul Becker.

"Playing the role of Paul Becker will be a blast as he is both complex and conflicted," said David Hayter in the press release. "I intend to provide gamers with a provocative and memorable experience on the roller coaster ride that is Shadow of the Eternals."

You can check out the game's Kickstarter page here or the official Shadows of the Eternals website.
Currently over $100,000 worth of pledges have been made, but the game will need to hit $750,000 within the next 28 days to be funded. Can it do it this time? I'm still not sure where I stand on the matter. On one hand I'm excited that a spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness might come to fruition, but at the same time I'm dubious about the team working on this game.

I should clarify that I'm not dubious because of the team, but mostly because they are leaning very heavily on referring to Eternal Darkness instead of striving to sell the IP on its own merits.

If funded the game will be a fully complete action-adventure game wading through pools of uneasy psychological horror that should run for roughly 8-10 hours, it will be available for PC and Wii U. Additionally, Precursor Games has confirmed that their first stretch goal will be a PlayStation 4 release. If you are really eager to support the game then head over to Steam Greenlight and show your support.

Here's the gameplay trailer released awhile back.

What do you think? Can Precursor Games pull it off?

[PC, Wii U] Shadow of the Eternals to re-launch crowdfunding effort

You probably won't ever find a failed crowdfunding project get as much press coverage as Precursor Games' Shadow of the Eternals, but we'll chalk that up to its association as the "spiritual successor" to the critically-acclaimed Eternal Darkness. With less than $300,000 raised of the $1.5 million goal set by the developer to make the project a reality, Precursor announced today that the current crowdfunding campaign for the game will be halted on June 6th, to be re-launched in "just a few short weeks." Those who have already contributed their money on the game's official website will receive a refund via PayPal, while pledges on Kickstarter will not be charged.

"Since we announced this Kickstarter campaign we have seen more support from our community than we had ever hoped for," reads a statement on the game's website. "Along with this support has come a host of a new exciting opportunities that will make the game better than we envisioned. As a result, we have chosen to temporarily take down the Shadow of the Eternals crowdfunding campaigns on both Kickstarter and our own website on Thursday, June 6."

"This doesn’t mean we are going away — far from it. We’ll be re-launching the Kickstarter in just a few short weeks with a reveal of these exciting new developments."

Clearly the game was never going to reach its goal, so what could these "exciting new developments" be? A restructuring to a smaller campaign goal? Did the game find support from a publisher? We shall find out in a few weeks time, but it at least sounds more promising now than it has at any time during the last few weeks of the campaign.

[PC, Wii U] Shadow of the Eternals, successor to Eternal Darkness, seeks crowdfunding

[PC, Wii U] Shadow of the Eternals, successor to Eternal Darkness, seeks crowdfunding
[Image: game-news-image-2013-b7b5fbea7ad6c7b1903...5a0a0f.png]
I loved Eternal Darkness on the Nintendo Gamecube, it was one of those rare survival horror experiences that scarcely surfaces anymore. However, with the recent fall of Silicon Knights I'd thought that all hopes for a sequel had been snuffed out.

That changed over the weekend when a bunch of information was uncovered for a project title Shadow of the Eternals. It has since been confirmed (thanks for uploading the trailer, IGN) that Shadow of the Eternals is coming and it will be a spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness available for the Wii U and PC from Precursor Games.

Reportedly the creators of the original Eternal Darkness are working on the project, including the original producer Dennis Dyack. The crowdfunding is set to kick off on the 6th of May, and the team is hoping to raise $1.5 million to create the 12 episodes.

A full reveal is planned when the campaign begins.

FAQ’s

Is Shadow of the Eternals DRM-free?

Yes, we plan to release a DRM-free version. Specific details will be announced in the future.

What platforms will Shadow of the Eternals be on?

We will be focusing on the PC and Wii U. Other platforms may be added in the future if desired by the community and the right funding goals are met.

How do I download Episode 1 on PC or Wii U?

This game is planned for digital distribution on both PC and Wii U. Details will be announced at a later date.

Will Shadow of the Eternals only be in English?

No, we will have subtitles for other languages. Details to follow.

Can you explain the stretch goals?

Shadow of the Eternals will be an episodic series, and our initial goal is 1.5 million dollars. This includes production on the Pilot Episode, game engine costs and core system development. Future episodes of Shadow of the Eternals will be significantly less to produce, and we look forward to announcing the possibility of more episodes based on the success of our campaign.
Additional money raised beyond this will also contribute to things such as in-game perks, additional gaming platforms, and other surprises. The more money that we raise, the more we will deliver based on what our fans want.

Why Crowdfunding and Self-Publishing?

The primary reason to crowdfund Shadow of the Eternals is because it allows us to work directly with our fans, and gain valuable feedback in developing the project. We can develop a rapport with our audience that would otherwise be difficult in a traditional setting.
Secondly, the games industry is currently in a state in which publishers no longer take chances on a project like this. We feel that the best way to bring this title to the public is to release it independently.

What happens if you do not reach your goal?

Our financial goal is a flexible one, and Precursor Games is committed to creating Shadow of the Eternals. All contributions will go directly towards the development of this game and making it a reality.

I would like to pledge, but I don’t really want to design anything. Is this okay?

Of course. Precursor Games will not force you to be involved in the creative development of Shadows of the Eternals if you do not wish to be.

What will the gameplay be like?

The gameplay in Shadow of the Eternals will utilize various mechanics for the different characters and locales, including physical combat, magick, exploration, and sanity systems.

What is Shadow of the Eternals about?

In Shadow of the Eternals, we follow the investigations of Detective Paul Becker, who is called to one of the bloodiest massacres in Louisiana state history. Only two survivors remain from a brutal conflict between two rival cults at the abandoned Pleasant View Hospital: one a suave, clean-cut business man – and the other a hardened, rogue-like biker.
Both men have seemingly lost all memory of who they are – and yet they are compelled to kill each other. As Becker begins his interrogations of the suspects, their combined recollections create the world of Shadow of the Eternals.

What is the Pilot Episode about?

Episode 1: “A Dream within a Dream” is a story that takes place in Hungary, 1610 AD in the castle of Erzébet Bathory. Bathory is considered to be one most notorious female serial killers of all time; torturing and killing as many as 400 young women to death in her obsessive quest for eternal life. We follow the character of Clara, a handmaiden and lover of Bathory’s, and the events that take place during the time of these murders.

Who do I play as?

You play as several characters throughout human history. Throughout Season One you play as Paul Becker, a Louisiana police detective. In the Pilot, you play Clara Rusznyák, a handmaiden to the noblewoman, Erzébet Bathory.

Why is this game episodic? What does that mean?

This means that the game will be delivered in chapters over time, and not all at once. This will allow Precursor Games to interact with gamers, and receive feedback that will both influence and improve the creative decisions involved in producing each episode.
Each episode will feature one or two characters that are part of a larger ensemble cast, as well as different locations across 2500 years of human history. As more episodes are released, players will piece together how each character’s fate is intertwined with one another.

How long is each episode?

Each episode will have approximately 2-4 hours of gameplay.

What kind of game is this?

This is an action-adventure game with horror elements.

Does this game feature multiplayer?

No, this is a single player experience. We believe that single player games are very much alive in this industry, and present a cinematic experience to the gamer unlike any other.

When do you plan to release?

Q3 2014, with subsequent episodes to quickly follow.
