Disney Infinity puts away 294,000 copies in August

by Jessica Conditt Writer RSS on Sep 16th 2013 10:00PM

Disney Infinity put the revenue from 294,000 sales in its toy box in its first two weeks on the market, a Disney spokesperson told Games Industry. Disney Infinity launched on August 18 and it hit No. 3 on the NPD's monthly sales report, behind Saints Row 4 and Madden 25.

The Accessories section of the NPD's totals hit $136.7 million for August. "Combined with sales of Skylanders accessories, one in every three accessory sold this month was an Interactive Gaming Toy," NPD reported.

We found Disney Infinity to be a joy for Disney fans of any age: "Adults who have a fondness for Disney will get the most out of Disney Infinity, thanks to its expansive Toy Box mode, and the Play Sets will provide hours of entertainment for kids who have prior experience with platformers."

August NPD: Madden 25, Saints Row 4, Disney Infinity lead the charge

by Jordan Mallory Writer RSS on Sep 12th 2013 7:14PM

The NPD Group has released its monthly report on sales in the physical retail sector of the video game industry for August, and due to dramatic figures on both sides of the scale, the industry as a whole remained essentially flat as far as its overall year-over-year income comparisons are concerned.

Overall hardware sales were down 40 percent as compared with August of 2012, with the entire segment bringing in just $90.8 million. Nintendo's 3DS appreciated its fourth month in a row as the best-selling piece of hardware in the US, while Microsoft's Xbox 360 enjoyed yet another podium finish as the best-selling home console, selling 96,000 units.

Meanwhile, year-over-year software sales were up by 23 percent: $293.4 million this August as compared to $237.9 million last year. Eight out of August's top 10 best-selling games were launched during the month, with the entire list achieving "more than double the sales" of the top 10 games of August 2012, according to NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan.

The list, available in full after the break, is topped by Madden 25, Saints Row 4 and Disney Infinity, the last of which also played a major role in the Accessories segment's $136.7 million of income – a seven-percent increase over last year. "Combined with sales of Skylanders accessories, one in every three accessory sold this month was an Interactive Gaming Toy," says Callahan.

Overkill has officially locked in the release date for Payday 2 on both Twitter and the game's Steam hub.

"PAYDAY 2 release date confirmed!" reads the tweet. "PAYDAY 2 will be out on Steam on August 13th, other platforms between 13th-16th."

Some PC players have been going hands on with the beta and a wealth of YouTube videos are available for your viewing pleasure, if you seek them out.

I'm pretty excited to play Payday 2, I easily sunk about 20 or more hours into the original (not as much as Left 4 Dead, but I had just as much fun with it).

Thanks VG247.

Angry Birds Trilogy lands on Wii U, Wii in August

by Sinan Kubba Writer RSS on Jun 27th 2013 5:30PM

Rovio is catapulting the Angry Birds Trilogy onto Wii U and Wii later this summer, with a trailer dating it for the Nintendo systems on August 13. The compendium, comprised of Angry Birds, AB Seasons, and AB Rio, plucks some extra content on Wii U and Wii, while the Wii U version is off-TV compatible and of course features touchscreen controls.

Back when publisher Activision announced the Wii U and Wii versions of the trilogy, it also revealed the mobile money-maker had proven a success on consoles, too. The Xbox 360, PS3, and 3DS versions released late last year shifted a million copies by February 2013.

[PC] Konami confirms Castlevania: Lords of Shadow for PC release this August

[PC] Konami confirms Castlevania: Lords of Shadow for PC release this August
[Image: game-news-image-2013-ac2d7c6dc1f808aa009...383974.jpg]
Although their pre-E3 stream this Friday is set to focus on a number of projects, including Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, that hasn't stopped Konami from confirming that the 2010 original for release on PC this August through retail and Valve's Steam.

You can check out the game's first trailer below:

The so-called 'ultimate edition' will include the original Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and the two downloadable content packs, Reverie and Resurrection.

Will you be picking it up? I reviewed Castlevania: Lords of Shadow for PlayStation 3 and quite happily gave it a passing grade. It's definitely not setting new standards for Castlevania but manages to hold its own as an action game.

[Wii U] Pikmin 3 is arriving on the Wii U this August, new Pikmin revealed

[Wii U] Pikmin 3 is arriving on the Wii U this August, new Pikmin revealed
[Image: game-news-image-2013-15f83929e4eb0b80589...7ead2a.png]
Pikmin 3 is the game that was meant to be available months ago; it was originally supposed to be available during the launch window. However, Nintendo's determination to spit-shine the game to near-perfection saw it slip out of the original window (although, I wondered if it was ever actually going to make it in the first place).

However, during today's stream they showed off some new footage for the newest installment in the Pikmin franchise. In the footage they revealed the new Winged Pikmin that will follow the player and carry items in the air. These new Pikmin join the Rock Pikmin as newcomers to the Pikmin series.

Nintendo later dated Pikmin 3 for release in the US and confirmed that it will be available on the 4th of August. Nintendo of Europe has not dated the game yet, but claim that it will be available in a few months.

August NPD: Software sales stabilize somewhat, Darksiders 2 takes first place [Update: Nintendo chimes in]

by Writer RSS on Sep 6th 2012 7:06PM

Despite the fact that hardware and software sales in the physical channel are still down when compared to August in 2011, market stabilization in the software sector (along with promising signs from the first week of 3DS XL sales) helps to reassure that 2012's ever-downward spiral may not be eternal.

Hardware sales for August 2012 were down 39 percent, bringing in $150.6 million versus the $248.8 million accrued during the same period in 2011. The Xbox 360 sold 190,000 units and was again the top selling platform of the month, according to Major Nelson, though the 3DS and PS3 both showed increases over July 2011, despite the month being down as a whole. Only one week of 3DS XL sales were recorded, but in that week enough units were sold to account for 44 percent of all 3DS sales in August.

The accessories segment continued its trend of having the smallest percentage amount of year-over-year loss at $127.3 million for the period, which is down seven percent from August 2011's $137 million. Points cards and other physical means of buying online currency continue to drive this segment, according to NPD Group industry analyst Anita Frazier.

As far as software is concerned, August 2012's performance was down nine percent – $237.7 million as compared to $261.8 million during the same period last year. When only looking at software for "high definition platforms," however, the year-over-year difference is only one percent. This signifies market stabilization, says Frazier, but August's sales were worse than they could have been had the months prior not been so devoid of new releases.

Darksiders 2 was the best-selling game during the period, followed by New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. As always, August's complete list of the top 10 games can be found after the break.

Nintendo Update: 3DS hardware sales were up 36 percent over July, while 3DS software sales were up 68 percent, Nintendo has said. New Super Mario Bros. 2 sold more than 240,000 copies, making it the best-selling individual SKU for the month of August. Meanwhile, Kingdom Hearts 3D sold over 180,000 copies.

Nintendo News

New Super Mario Bros. 2 Emerges as the Best-Selling Video Game of August

Even with only five days of reported data, Nintendo 3DS XL and New Super Mario Bros. 2 still had major impacts on the August video game market. The new hardware, which features 90 percent larger screens than the original Nintendo 3DS, and the new side-scrolling Mario adventure both launched on Aug. 19 and helped Nintendo achieve the following:

Nintendo 3DS software sales increased by more than 68 percent over sales in July.
Nintendo 3DS hardware sales increased by more than 36 percent over sales in July.
The No. 1 and No. 2 top-selling software SKUs for the month are both exclusive to Nintendo 3DS. New Super Mario Bros. 2 sold more than 240,000 units to finish No. 1, and KINGDOM HEARTS 3D [Dream Drop Distance] from Square Enix sold more than 180,000 copies to finish No. 2.
"Software sells hardware, and no one sells either quite like Mario," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "In addition to helping New Super Mario Bros. 2 get off to a great start, Nintendo 3DS XL is driving increased interest in titles such as Kid Icarus: Uprising, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Mario Kart 7. These games have been on the market for more than six months but provide a completely new experience on the larger screens. Combine these titles with the upcoming Paper Mario: Sticker Star and a robust list of third-party games, and Nintendo 3DS is poised to be high on holiday wish lists this year."

Stellar: Incubus track pack heading to Rock Band in August

by on Jul 18th 2011 5:45PM

Please, pardon us while we potentially spoil some of the Rock Band DLC offerings for August, but Incubus manager Steve Rennie already went ahead and did that on his Twitter feed. Responding to a fan request for info on Incubus tracks coming to Rock Band 3, Rennie replied, "August. 5 tracks 'Megalomaniac,' 'Pardon Me,' 'Stellar,' 'WYWH,' 'Adolescents.'"

Harmonix weighed in on its own forums, which pegged the DLC as a three track pack instead, including "Adolescents," "Pardon Me," and "Wish You Were Here." The post added, "Not sure where those other two tracks came from (we may be talking with them about licensing them) but they're not part of the pack in August and they're not on the DLC spreadsheet in the near future."

Fans will no doubt be happy to hear the news, as this will (bizarrely) be the first Incubus track pack for a Rock Band title. Previously, only "Drive" was available through Guitar Hero: World Tour., and "Dig" is in Lego Rock Band (exportable). We've reached out to Harmonix for pricing info and release date, but expect it to be around $5.50, given past pricing for three-song track packs.

[Thanks Lewis and Sean!]

Driver: San Francisco peels out on August 30, 2011

by on Apr 27th 2011 8:00PM

Ubisoft has announced that the next installment in the Driver series, Driver: San Francisco, will hit the mean streets of US retail on August 30. The game is currently slated to launch on PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Mac simultaneously. Separate titles bearing the same name are also planned for the Wii and 3DS.

Driver: San Francisco once again sees players stepping into the shoes of Tanner, who, after being involved in an accident, gains the unusual ability to shift into the bodies of other drivers in the game on-the-fly. Look for more details in our full preview of the game tomorrow.
