[Wii U] Nintendo announces Wii U Virtual Console; confirms Earthbound is on the way

[Wii U] Nintendo announces Wii U Virtual Console; confirms Earthbound is on the way
[Image: game-news-image-2013-8bfc1c9eb045bbe712c...2002a3.jpg]
So, the Wii U Spring System Update will drop next week. It will speed up the console when switching between applications and will also add and enhance functionality.

The day after the update launches the Wii U Virtual Console service will kick off. Additionally, a free demo will be made available for Wii U Panorama View on the Nintendo eShop.

But most importantly, Nintendo have announced that Earthbound will be arriving on the Wii U's Virtual Console sometime before the end of the year. That's right, Earthbound is coming! This is great news considering how touchy Nintendo has been about the subject in recent months, but apparently fan outcry helped them change their minds and make it happen.

This is especially good news for European gamers, as we've never had the chance to play the game legally (due to the fact Earthbound never came out over here) unless you imported a console and a copy of the game. So, I'm especially eager to drop my money on this game and show my support.

Earthbound, as well as other Virtual Console titles on the Wii U, will support Off-TV play and potentially Miiverse Community support. I say potentially because I'm not sure if all Virtual Console releases will support it.

It's a Virtual Console Halloween

by Writer RSS on Oct 30th 2012 8:30PM

Welcome to Living in the Past, a weekly column about what's new in old games. Now get off our lawn.
If you're going to be at home this Halloween, waiting to dispense candy and tinny Wilhelm screams to neighborhood children, why not pass the time with some spooky games? While it's easy to tell you to go play the latest zombie whatever or Castlevania, I am opting instead to mine the downloadable retro lineup of our most terrifying console: the Nintendo Wii.

There might still be some Castlevania.

It's a Virtual Console HalloweenSplatterhouse: A young woman is kidnapped and imprisoned in a monster-filled house, and her boyfriend is murdered in the same attack. Meanwhile, a man possessed by a demonic mask is destroying everything in sight. The twist is that the dead boyfriend is the possessed maniac, and is actually the protagonist of the piece.Devil's Crush: Fight a transforming demon, dragons, giant skull monsters, undead knights and a weird druid-looking cult. In a pinball game. Devil's Crush is simultaneously the creepiest and the most metal album-cover like game in the era pre-Crüe Ball.Ghouls 'n Ghosts: Gotta have one of these on the list. These are the canonical Halloween games, starting in a graveyard and ending with your inevitable death, a lone skeleton in boxer shorts, murdered without remorse by a playful red demon. And speaking of Firebrand, you can get his own game, Gargoyle's Quest, on 3DS.Castlevania: Rondo of Blood: All right, there's a Castlevania game on here. I warned you. But if you haven't played this lost gem of the series, it's worth me being a total hack in a Halloween feature. Originally released on the PC Engine CD-ROM in Japan, it didn't come to America until this Virtual Console release and the Dracula X Chronicles on PSP. Not only is it a great game, it's an interesting transitional step between vintage Castlevania and Symphony of the Night.Kid Chameleon: It's a game about wearing masks! In the game, putting on a mask transforms you into a different person with different abilities. I can dress up like a knight in real life, but somehow it doesn't allow me to scale walls. On the upside, it might prevent me from dying when I try.Summer Games II: Just kidding.Let other people wear costumes and go to parties. You can sit at home on your couch and play old games! Those suckers may not ever see Devil's Crush's bonus stages because they're all too busy socializing or whatever.

NintendoWare Weekly: An actual Virtual Console game

by Writer RSS on Apr 26th 2012 4:00PM

ImageAfter two weeks of absolutely nothing in new Wii downloads, Nintendo dropped a new Virtual Console game on us. And not just any new Virtual Console game, Super Street Fighter II ... with online play. Even after being released in Japan last November, and being announced locally by Capcom the same month, it's still surprising to see extra functionality.

It's still surprising to see a Wii Virtual Console game.

Wii Virtual Console

3DS eShop Block Factory (Enjoy Gaming, 1 player, $3.99): A color-matching puzzle game with Tetris-like blocks.DSiWare Chuck E. Cheese's Arcade Room (UFO Interactive Games, 1 player, $4.99/500 DSi Points): Play pretend arcade whack-a-mole and basketball, win pretend tickets, and redeem them for pretend toys. Then, as you sit down for your illusory pizza, you realize – best birthday party ever.

Trade Club Nintendo Coins for Cubello or Game Boy Virtual Console games this month

by on Mar 1st 2012 3:00PM

With the beginning of a new month comes a new selection of downloadable Club Nintendo rewards. This month, you can trade your hard-earned Club Nintendo Coins (earned by registering purchased games) for Art Style: Cubello on WiiWare, or the Game Boy games Mario's Picross and Radar Mission on 3DS eShop. They cost 100 Coins each.

As with previous monthly selections, these are all games that you can buy through the Wii Shop or 3DS eShop with real money. You simply have the additional temporary option of using your Club Nintendo stash.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) pulled from Virtual Console

by on Feb 14th 2012 11:00AM

You waited too long. It was only a couple bucks, but you thought, "I have time. It'll always be there. I'll get to it eventually." But now you can't download Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the Virtual Console and your world is destroyed.

Honestly, it was a weird goal to have, but we didn't want to say anything. In each and every region, it seems the turtles have retreated from the Virtual Console. Nintendo World Report reports Konami cited an "expired license," the same issue that claimed TMNT Turtles in Time Re-Shelled.

There's no word on whether the turtles will return to the surface any time soon, so we've contacted Konami for more.

Super Street Fighter II coming to Virtual Console with online multiplayer

by on Nov 12th 2011 6:30PM

Details are slim at this point, but Capcom Unity announced yesterday that the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version of Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers will be coming to Nintendo's Virtual Console ecosystem sometime in the future. No word on pricing or availability, but we do know that the port will feature online play, which, believe it or not, actually existed in the original release in the form of XBAND compatibility.

If you're not old enough to remember XBAND, you're probably not old enough to be excited about one of the many variants of Street Fighter 2 being re-released. If you are old enough to remember XBAND, we hope you can find time between refinancing your mortgage and picking the kids up from band practice to go a few rounds.

R-Type being removed from Virtual Console on Sept. 30

by on Sep 28th 2011 4:58PM

Sega recently announced that the Sega Master System versions of R-Type will be removed from the Wii's Virtual Console on September 30. No reason was given for the game's removal, but these things usually involve business mumbo-jumbo surrounding licensing issues. If you have any interest in this milestone of the shmup genre, grab it while you can.

Coincidentally, Irem, which developed R-Type, removed several titles from the Japanese PSN back in August, including several R-Type games. No reason was given for those edits either.

Chrono Trigger rated by ESRB for Virtual Console

by on May 2nd 2011 11:00AM

Square Enix's beloved Chrono Trigger has popped up on the ESRB site for "Wii," meaning the SNES classic will also make its way to the North American Virtual Console. The title was previously announced for digital distribution on the Nintendo console for Japan and Europe.

No official word on price, but it'll likely be the same 100-point markup as in Japan, making the title a premium 900 Wii Points ($9). The game was also recently rated for PSP and PS3, alluding to a PSN release. Still no word about the mobile version for North America, but at least there's still the DS version.

ESRB reveals Dino Crisis 2 on PSN, Mega Man 5 on Virtual Console

by on Apr 18th 2011 4:30PM

Good news for PSP, PS3, or Wii owners who like to download old Capcom games! The ESRB brings word of two upcoming classic rereleases from the publisher.

The PSOne Classic Dino Crisis 2 is headed to PSN soon, allowing you to experience not just a bunch of scary dinosaurs, but also the first directing work of Ace Attorney creator Shu Takumi. In addition, the NES game Mega Man 5 was rated for Wii, a platform that is being blessed with Mega Man titles semi-regularly (one arrived today!)

Thanks, Capcom, for ensuring that we'll always have dinosaurs and robots (and sometimes robot dinosaurs) to shoot.

[Thanks, Jocaju]

Chrono Trigger, Mega Man X coming to Virtual Console in Japan

by on Mar 25th 2011 2:45PM

Nintendo's Virtual Console release schedule for April includes just three games -- quite a contrast from the service's high points in 2007 and 2008, when the monthly additions would routinely top a dozen. However, even with just three releases, Nintendo of Japan manages to make us totally jealous, because one of those releases is Chrono Trigger.

Nintendo (or Square Enix) has decided to charge a premium 900 Wii Points for the Super Nintendo RPG, a 100-point markup that is usually reserved for games "imported" from other regions, but used here basically because they can. That's still cheaper than the current (discounted) price for the DS version in the US.

In case we hadn't achieved sufficient jealousy levels, the other planned SNES release for next month is Mega Man X, which will sell for the standard 800-point price in Japan. Also on the schedule: King of the Monsters 2 for Neo Geo.

[3DS] 3DS eShop in late May, brings more platforms to Virtual Console

[3DS] 3DS eShop in late May, brings more platforms to Virtual Console [Image: game-news-image-2011-0961507ee3d287ae6ec...08a99e.jpg]
As you know, the 3DS will have access to Game Boy and Game Boy Colour titles through its own virtual console when the update is released. Today Nintendo announced that they would be releasing the eShop firmware update in late May at this point.

The update will give users access to the DSiWare section, where you'll be able to download games (as well as transfer previously purchased games across). The Virtual Console will also arrive with this update with Game Gear and Turbografx being added onto it as well as Game Boy and Game Boy Colour.

Nintendo also announced that users will be able to watch Hollywood movie trailers in 3D on the handheld.

Finally, the big N also announced that the eShop will grant you access to '3D Classics', which they say "will introduce select classic video games remastered in 3D."

NES Ghosts 'N Goblins removed from Virtual Console

by on Jan 11th 2011 2:10PMArthur has bested demons, specters and all manner of otherworldly monsters, but now he's finally found an unbeatable foe: Erasure. No, we're not speaking about the greatest band of all time -- we're speaking about actual, literal erasure. The NES version of Ghosts 'N Goblins has mysteriously vanished off of the Wii Virtual Console platform, leaving only the slightly more expensive, 800 Nintendo Point arcade version in its wake.
Capcom hasn't formally explained why the NES version of the game disappeared, but it certainly isn't the first title to vanish off of Nintendo's downloadable games services without warning or cause. Ironically enough, our best guess for the reason behind these disappearances involve both ghosts and goblins. We'll see if we can get something a little more official than that.
