Square Enix sale offers discounts on everything Square Enix

by JC Fletcher Writer RSS on Dec 13th 2012 6:00PM

Square Enix sale offers discounts on everything Square EnixSquare Enix is hosting another sale on its online store, one that actually appears to discount Hitman: Absolution for real. Basically, almost everything in the store is 50% off, with free shipping to the contiguous US states.

Some of the noteworthy offers, just from a quick overview, include $14 Dead Island ($10 on PC); $10 each for a bunch of standout DS games like Chrono Trigger DS, Exit, Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, and both Space Invaders Extremes; Nier for $10; and more. Even DLC is on sale. Basically, if it's from Square Enix and from this generation, it's on sale.

Even iOS release Demons' Score is discounted, in its own offer. Through January 31, it's just 99 cents (down from $7), and the many, many in-app purchases are all cheaper.

What will this special presentation hold? We know Square Enix is working on a new Final Fantasy for PlayStation 4; they also encouraged us to be excited for Final Fantasy at E3.

[Image: game-news-image-2013-09583e60972ff1cd139...84a3d9.jpg]
Murdered: Soul Suspect is an interesting new project in development at Square Enix and slated for release on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 at some point in early 2014.

Now it appears that Square Enix could be teasing something in the not-too-distant future for their newest game. A user on NeoGAF spotted an interesting tweet from there Murdered: Soul Suspect Twitter account.

"disTUrbing nEw evidence fileS in archive. how Does this relAte to the case?"

Before you ask, no I don't have a problem with my keyboard's caps lock, it's almost definitely an intentional teaser. Piecing together the capitalised letters spells out TUESDA, one letter short of Tuesday.

What do you think it'll be? Will Square Enix shed some more light on this mysterious project? Of course, this could just be a coincidence as well but I feel compelled to remind you (and myself) that we're ridiculously close to E3.

Report: Square Enix America CEO leaves, joins Amazon

by Jessica Conditt Writer RSS on May 23rd 2013 1:30PM

hit 1st Report Square Enix America president is outSquare Enix America CEO Mike Fischer left the company this month and is now vice president of digital music and video for Amazon in Japan, Polygon reports. This follows news in April that Square Enix America eliminated "a number of positions" and Fischer was expected to leave in May. Those same reports said the head of marketing should be gone after E3, along with other employees in public relations.

In March, Square Enix President Yoichi Wada stepped down and the company announced widespread restructuring that it expected to cost $106 million. Square Enix posted a net loss of $134 million for fiscal year 2013, citing "weak" sales of major console games, including Sleeping Dogs, Hitman: Absolution and Tomb Raider, the last of which sold 3.4 million in its first month.

Final Fantasy XIV turned out to be a wake up call to Square Enix; the Japanese developer and publisher has been putting a lot of effort into restoring the game prior to its disappointing launch.

Today the company confirmed that the re-launched Final Fantasy XIV will be made available sometime this Summer for PC and PlayStation 3.

Additionally, they also confirmed that the game will be entering the third phase of its closed beta test this June. The third phase will allow PlayStation 3 users to jump on board and get their first taste of Final Fantasy XIV action and experience the world of Eorzea alongside PC players. It will also introduce participants to new content, including the introduction of two new city states: Ul'dah and Limsa Lominsa.

If you haven't applied for beta entry yet then head over here or here to register your interest.

You can probably expect a release date announcement at E3.

[Multi] Siliconera are teasing a Square Enix reveal for Monday

[Multi] Siliconera are teasing a Square Enix reveal for Monday
[Image: game-news-image-2012-424cc3b057b15ec3705...b56d30.jpg]
That's right. The folks over at Siliconera have put a new post informing their readers that Square Enix is giving them an exclusive announcement that will go live on Monday. Naturally, Siliconera aren't saying much more than that but apparently it will be an exclusive and it will surprise you.

So, let's get those guesses flowing. What would you like it to be? It could be assumed that it because Siliconera isn't on the same level as IGN or those other big-name sites that it might not be a huge title but honestly you never know. It could be something as simple as Type-0 being confirmed the PlayStation Vita in the West. Or maybe something more far-fetched such as The World Ends With You 2. Or heck, maybe it'll even be some sort of news related to Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

What would you like to see Square Enix announce?

[PS3, X360] Square Enix & BioWare bring regulation N7 armour to Final Fantasy XIII-2

[PS3, X360] Square Enix & BioWare bring regulation N7 armour to Final Fantasy XIII-2
Final Fantasy XIII-2 has been receiving regular DLC, which is a first for the franchise. It has received new fights, costumes and even a new chapter to the story. Well, the newest costume has finally been released and it comes thanks to a collaboration between Square Enix and BioWare. You can check out the announcement trailer below.

CAUTION: This video contains spoilers, so if you don't want anything spoiled then be sure to check out the images below

You can pick the costumes up right now on both the PSN and through XBL, they'll set you back €1.99 / £1.79 / 240 MSP each (that's right, they come separately). So if the Mass Effect 3 ending didn't frustrate you enough, now you can parade around in Square Enix's questionable sequel in N7 armour. Sounds kind of neat, right? Anyway, here are the images. You can click them to get a better look. [Image: game-news-image-2012-c2a9f8a9ed730a38929...455e01.jpg][Image: game-news-image-2012-9640853f3f854566cc9...5738a0.jpg]

[3DS] Square Enix dates Kingdom Hearts 3D, shows off themed 3DS
Square Enix has announced a release date for Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance in Japan, fans will be able to pick the game themselves on the 29th of March. Unfortunately no pricing was announced for the bundle, but it looks like a pretty spiffy piece of hardware. Now we just need to wait it out and see what sort of release date Square Enix give the game for a Western release.

Square Enix head Yoichi Wada sees a gaming future in the clouds

by on Sep 14th 2011 10:33PM

Tokyo Game Show 2011 is officially on, with today's keynote, delivered by Square Enix prez Yoichi Wada, kicking things off. Despite Mr. Wada's position at the JRPG giant, he's here speaking as the chairman of the Computer Entertainment Software Association, which means he had some pretty high level content to get through in his speech. In fact, his keynote is named, "The Nature of the Industry Revolution of Games."

First and foremost, he's all about the cloud. No, not that Cloud, but the one that allows for remote gaming. "I think the cloud is a real revolution," Wada explained. In his eyes, he's got a variety of electronics with "huge processing power" -- processing power that could be harnessed for new gameplay experiences. "If you could concentrate such processing power on the cloud, then there's going to be a huge paradigm shift," he added.

As for when this "paradigm shift" will happen, Wada is less clear. According to his presentation, he expects a move in that direction anywhere between now and 2015. In the meantime, he believes we're only just now experiencing the first in several new waves of change in the game industry.

"There's a surge ... a flood of all these changes that came all at one time," Wada said. "I think we have just experienced the first tide, and we've yet to experience the second or third waves which will happen in the years to come." The first wave, he said, has been the rise of Smartphones and the move away from sheer processing power as a driving force in the game/console sales. He cited examples as the iPhone, the Nintendo DS, and the modern PC as pushing this first wave. But what's next?

While he's not sure, he posited that perhaps hologram-based gaming could be the next step. That may force gamers to return to dedicated game consoles -- it's innovation that's driving the market.

What are we taking from his guess? Wada has clearly seen the future. And it's holodecks.

Square Enix streaming reveal of new Dragon Quest next week

by on Sep 2nd 2011 12:00PM

Square Enix will reveal the next Dragon Quest game live over Ustream and Nico Nico on September 5 at 2PM Japan time (1AM Eastern). While it's entirely possible this is a new game announcement, we find it more likely that it'll be a blowout of Dragon Quest X, which was announced for Wii in 2008 and never shown off in any capacity.

Square Enix will throw a trailer for DQX into the Wii anniversary collection that's coming out in Japan on September 15, so it will definitely have something ready to show next week. We'll probably get our first look at that trailer on the stream before it ships to retail.

[iOS] Square Enix prepping Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions for iOS

[iOS] Square Enix prepping Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions for iOS
Do you remember Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions for PSP? It was apparently a pretty good game, but you may not own a PSP on which to play it. Square Enix will amend this but only if you have iPhone 4 or 3GS models when they release the game on Apple's App Store this Thursday. iPad users will have to wait for the proper iPad-specific release of the game if they want to get the most out of it (and not just play an up-scaled version of it).

No word has been announced about the pricing of this release, but knowing Square Enix it won't be a budget App Store release. Apparently the digital PSP release of the game goes for about $9.99, so maybe that will provide some clues.

Check out the demonstration video below (it is in Japanese).

Square Enix's Mike Fischer on trends and the changing game industry

by on Jul 25th 2011 9:00PM

In an interview with Gamasutra, Mike Fischer, recently appointed president of Square Enix's US operations, spoke at great length about the current state of the game industry. Fischer noted that Square Enix is necessarily focused on building games for "gamers," primarily because he believes that the definition of gamer is "very subjective."

As an example, Fischer pointed to television networks canceling soap operas because their primary audience are spending time playing games. "If they're playing more games an hour than a college student, who is the gamer?" he asked.

That said, even though social games are "hot" right now Square Enix won't abandon traditional game development for the sake of a trend that Fischer believes may not last. The company has, according to Fischer, a "strong lineup and strong IP" that gives him "confidence in a long term success" and an opportunity to take part in current trends outside of core games.

Check out Gamasutra for the full interview, which covers Square Enix's strategy going forward and Fischer's thoughts on new IP, the console development cycle and more.

Square Enix's Wii U tests don't necessarily involve Dragon Quest X

by on Jun 23rd 2011 1:15PM

Yesterday's report that Square Enix is considering a version of Dragon Quest X for Wii U has been clarified by the site that first brought us CEO Yoichi Wada's comments, made to a group of investors. Apparently the company is working with the Wii U tech, but that's a completely separate endeavor from Dragon Quest X for now.

So, while it's possible that you may still see Dragon Quest X on Wii U, Square isn't saying one way or the other. Frankly, we'd be happier to see something made from the ground up for the unique console.

And are we angry that we were lead astray? No, friends, we're not. Sometimes, things just get lost in translation. In fact, that's the subject of our favorite Bill Murray movie, which is Garfield.

Square Enix considering Wii U-compatible Dragon Quest X [update]

by on Jun 22nd 2011 10:00AM

During a shareholder meeting, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada noted that Square Enix is considering a Wii U version of its upcoming Wii RPG Dragon Quest X. According to a transcript of the proceeding, an investor asked Wada if he believed it was time to make the game for Wii U instead of the original Wii.

Instead of releasing it only on the successor system, however, Wada said that Square Enix was in the midst of "technical investigations" on how to support Wii U, and stated that the company "must consider" compatibility with both systems.

While the Wii might be on its way out, Enix's SOP with the series has always been to wait for an established, high-selling platform to emerge, and then put the game on that. A multiplatform release would be enough of a break from that tradition; we wouldn't expect Square Enix to stray so far as to launch the game only on a new platform.

[Update: The blog that provided the transcript has since clarified the statements, reporting that Wada was talking about Wii U experiments separate from Dragon Quest X, and not DQX on Wii U.]
