[Multi] All GAME Australia outlets set to close down

[Multi] All GAME Australia outlets set to close down

Sad news today, folks. Although the GAME stores scrapped through in the UK reaching some form of safety, the same cannot be said for the Australian branch sadly.

A large number of stores had already closed down but now it appears that the final Australian stores will be joining their brethren in closure.

“In the interests of creditors, the 31 remaining Game stores are to be closed over the coming weeks and a final closing down sale has commenced with discounts of up to 60 percent available in-store and online,” administrator Kate Warwick said in a statement provided to Gamespot.

“This is a difficult time for employees and closing the stores was not a decision we made easily. Despite exploring available opportunities for continued trading, the ongoing trading performance and absence of viable offers for the purchase of the business has resulted in these closures.”

It is a sad day, I hope you'll join us in sending our thoughts and best wishes to everyone out there who has been affected by the closures.

UK government may close online shopping tax loophole

by on Mar 24th 2011 5:00AM

The gaming significance of the above headline may not seem apparent, but bear with us. This May, the UK government will consider "the continued marketing and use of highly aggressive and artificial tax avoidance schemes." As noted by VG247, businesses located in a certain part of Jersey (the UK one, not the one famous for GTL) are not required to include value added tax (VAT) in their prices. As such, many game sellers -- GAME, Amazon, Play, etc. -- base their businesses there, allowing them to sell games at lower prices than competitors (though only on items under £18).

MCV reports that the consultation planned for May will likely see current countermeasures extended. Said countermeasures allow the government to "enable the listing of specific tax avoidance schemes for direct taxes so that the subsequent use of such schemes will carry consequences for the user."

Within four years, the measures could earn the UK government as much as £4 billion. Of course, they would also have the added side effect of raising prices on certain games.

[PS3, X360, PC] Danger Close Developing Medal of Honor Sequel, No Surprises There

Despite the lukewarm critical response that the Medal of Honor reboot received last year when it launched, it has still managed to shift a decent amount of copies with EA claiming over 5 million units have been sold to date.

The news was broken by the chief of Danger Close (and the Medal of Honor executive producer), Greg Goodrich, on their blog. After he talks about how pleased they were with the original titles' sales he mentions:

"Since our launch last October, we've studied, listened and absorbed much of your feedback and are very excited to be marching forward on the next title. We can't wait to tell you more about it, so check back often to the website and the fan page on Facebook."

It shouldn't be too long before we see the game itself, but do you think they'll release it up against Battlefield 3 and the inevitable Call of Duty game later this year? And if they have been listening to feedback, what would you like to see them do in particular?
