Joystiq's Fall Release Cheat Sheet: December 2012

by Writer RSS on Oct 18th 2012 4:00PM

Joystiq's Fall Release Cheat Sheet December 2012Oh, December, with your regionally specific cold or warm nights, sugarplums and gift giving. It's also a time when the video game industry stops jamming the accelerator on so many video games. Which is good, because you have a lot of games to catch up on from both October and November.

December, however, does have a few highlights. Far Cry 3 arrives, along with the retail package of the outstanding Walking Dead adventure game series. So keep warm (or cool – we don't know where you live!) inside and spend some time with a few new video games.

Of course, there are plenty of other great games available this fall we didn't get a chance to highlight. That's why we want to hear your anticipated Fall 2012 games for a follow-up "Community Response" feature to these Cheat Sheets. Give us your list in the comments below and tell us why you're looking forward to it; we may even highlight your comment.

December 4, 2012 – PC, X360, PS3
"After replenishing my supplies – and buying a silencer for my SMG, for all the good it will do me – I check out the bulletin board in my newly acquired base of operations. It seems a bandit has taken over a local farm and someone wants me to take revenge. The only catch is that I have to honor the local tradition in doing so, which means I have to kill him with a knife. Sounds easy enough." – Joystiq's Far Cry 3 Preview Joystiq's Fall 2012 Games Guide
December 4, 2012 – X360, PS3 (Retail Collection, Episodes Available Digitally)
All five episodes of The Walking Dead crawl to retail shelves in one convenient bundle this December, for Xbox 360 and PS3. Each episode so far has been a treat of terror: The writing is "fraught with tense pauses and biting, yet humane, dialogue;" the gameplay "has found the balance between personalized gaming and coherent drama;" and Telltale Games has a surprising smash hit on its hands. The retail package is out just in time for the holidays, and really, there's nothing more eternal than the ravenous hunger of the undead. And they say diamonds are forever. December 4, 2012 – X360 (Download), PS3 (Retail and Download)
"Believe it or not, the controls work: I was able to pull off abilities and combos with nearly as much complexity as the PC MOBAs. Legolas, for example, has a rooting ability that locks enemy players down, as well as a quick dash ability, and another one that knocks back targets away from him. After a little bit of practice, I was able to use those abilities together, dashing forward past a fleeing enemy, knocking him back into harm's way, and then locking him down in place for the finish. The toughest part is making sure the aiming is lined up (you move with the left stick, and target with the right), but it's amazing that it works on a controller at all." – Joystiq's Guardians of Middle-earth Preview Joystiq's Fall 2012 Games Guide
2012 – PC, Mac
"Luftrausers is a fitting continuation of the gameplay style that Vlambeer explored in Super Crate Box. It's easy to play, and relies on a combination of continuous unlocks and – most importantly – responsive, satisfying explosions on the regular, to get players hooked on repeated short sessions." – Joystiq's Luftrausers Preview Joystiq's 2012 Fall Games Guide
2012 – PS3 (Download)
Ratchet and Clank return! Insomniac's latest installment brings the action to PSN with cross-play funcationality across the PS3 and Vita. Full Frontal Assault promises to return to the series roots, packing in plenty of action and weapons, but also throwing in some new tower defense elements.

Joystiq's Fall Release Cheat Sheet: November 2012

by Writer RSS on Oct 18th 2012 3:00PM

Joystiq's Fall Release Cheat Sheet November 2012November is traditionally the time of year our wallets attempt to flee, lest they're destroyed by the onslaught of new video games. Hundreds of games, across every conceivable platform, will arrive next month. Are you ready?

In our November "Cheat Sheet" we highlight a few likely contenders for your harvest season free time. Halo 4, Black Ops 2, Hitman: Absolution and ... an entirely new home console! The Wii U drops next month and with it comes a slew of amazing games (too many for us to include, really). Here's what you should be saving up for in November.

Joystiq's 2012 Fall Games GuideJoystiq's 2012 Fall Games GuideNovember 6, 2012 – X360
Stoic cyborg Master Chief returns in Halo 4, an ambitious sequel from new franchise custodian 343 Industries. After plunging into the heart of a Forerunner planet, Chief and Cortana find new foes in the Promethean race, and new allies in the crew of the stranded UNSC Infinity. The Infinity is the subject of Spartan Ops, a new episodic series of story-driven co-op missions, and the basis of War Games, the most robust Halo multiplayer mode yet. November 11, 2012 – 3DS
"Stickers drive the entirety of combat now. In past Paper Mario games, battles have been a turn-based affair with some light contextual QTE tossed in – hit A when Mario jumps on a Goomba and you'll land extra hits, for example. That part is still there, but now all of your attacks are initiated by using your collected stickers. Once that sticker is used, it's gone forever." – Joystiq's Paper Mario: Sticker Star Preview Joystiq's Fall 2012 Games Guide
November 13, 2012 – PC, X360, PS3 / November 18, 2012 – Wii U
As we said in our recent preview, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is the most ambitious game the series has seen thus far. With a single-player mode featuring branching storylines, a multiplayer mode that drastically changes core components players have grown used to, and a complete open-world zombie playground, Black Ops 2 is vying for much (if not all) of your free time this fall. Whether Treyarch can deliver on its lofty promises has yet to be seen, but there's a whole lot of passion going into the near-future set war zone. Joystiq's Fall 2012 Games Guide
November 2012 – Vita
Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified follows the events occurring between the original game and this holiday's upcoming sequel. It's developer Nihilistic's (now nStigate) second Vita FPS, following Resistance: Burning Skies. In addition to the single-player campaign, Declassified offers a wave-based survival mode and 8-on-8 multiplayer tied to a progression system of weapons, perks and other unlockable abilities. Joystiq's Fall 2012 Games Guide
November 11, 2012 – PS3
The PS3 and Move interact with a special book to bring you into a world of books, games, and interactive ... things. Harry Potter writer J.K. Rowling contributes original writing to Book of Spells, the first Wonderbook game meant to teach you how to perform Potteriffic feats. Joystiq's Fall 2012 Games Guide
November 18, 2012 – X360, PS3, Wii, Wii U
Mickey Mouse and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit work together to save Wasteland – Mickey with his paint and thinner abilities, and Oswald with a magical remote control. The Disney teamup allows a second player to take control of Oswald and go on nostalgic adventures with Mickey; at any time, the second player can choose to cede control to an A.I. Oswald, for easy drop-in, drop-out play. Joystiq's Fall 2012 Games Guide
November 18, 2012 – 3DS
Dreamrift, developer of Monster Tale, brings back the Castle of Illusion in an original side-scroller for 3DS that mines both Disney history and the history of Disney video games. When the witch Mizrabel and her magical castle arrive in Wasteland, Mickey navigates the tricky confines looking for Minnie. The castle features "illusions" of famous Disney characters all requiring Mickey's help, and employs Epic Mickey's signature paint and thinner mechanics to allow players to alter the environment. Joystiq's Fall 2012 Games Guide
November 18, 2012 – Wii U
"While the game is going on as normal on the television, one player can tap the touchscreen to place blocks, which dissipate as players stand on them. Ideally, these blocks are used to help the Wiimote-based players reach secret areas, make difficult jumps, and avoid falling into Piranha Plants or other obstacles below. It's also possible to be a jerk and place blocks in the way of jumps, but I found that less fun than being helpful." – Joystiq's New Super Mario Bros. U Preview Joystiq's Fall 2012 Games Guide
November 18, 2012 – Wii U
A series of multiplayer "attractions" inspired by classic Nintendo franchises like Zelda, Animal Crossing, and Metroid. These simple minigames all make clever use of the GamePad, making this the Wii Sports of the Wii U. Joystiq's Fall 2012 Games Guide
November 18, 2012 – PC, Wii U, 3DS
"But by far the most revolutionary improvement for the sequel (in a series whose every improvement is pretty dang revolutionary) is the item editor, which lets you take any single item and change its color, add other items (or components thereof) to it, and then even change its behavior." – Joystiq's Scribblenauts Unlimited Preview Joystiq's Fall 2012 Games Guide
November 18, 2012 – Wii U
ZombiU may sound like where the kids of Gravedale High go after they graduate, but it's actually one of the few Wii U exclusives going for the mature market. This survival horror game from Ubisoft will have players using the WiiPad in all sorts of ways to avoid becoming a feast of flesh. Joystiq's Fall 2012 Games Guide
November 20, 2012 – 3DS, DS
WayForward adapts Cartoon Network's sweet, surreal cartoon series into a Zelda 2-inspired adventure for both 3DS and DS. The Ice King has stolen garbage from around the land of Ooo in order to make a Garbage Princess, and it's up to Finn and Jake to stop him because that's gross. Joystiq's Fall 2012 Games Guide
November 20, 2012 – PC, X360, PS3
"...Things are looking good for Agent 47's return. I'd like some more surprises in the single-player campaign, but that may be a balancing act ... but I'm looking forward to piling up the bodies and walking away unseen." – Joystiq's Hitman: Absolution Preview Joystiq's Fall 2012 Games Guide
November 20, 2012 – Vita
Believe it or not, the chance to play a Vita remake of a five-year-old PS2 JRPG is pretty exciting, provided said JRPG is a Persona game. Persona 4 Golden takes the 2008 original and embellishes it with better graphics, more voice acting, more animated cut scenes, the ability to explore Okina City and a whole entire new character named Marie. Joystiq's Fall 2012 Games Guide
November 20, 2012 – PS3, Vita
PlayStation characters like Parappa, Kratos, and Nathan Drake get in a fight for some reason in a four-player party fighting game. PS3 owners and Vita owners can face off, thanks to both cross-play and cross-buy functionality.
