Tony Hawk says Ride was 'a bit rushed,' still thinks critics didn't give his board a chance

by on Mar 8th 2012 8:15PM

Even after all this time, Tony Hawk's stance is firm regarding the poorly received Shred and Ride games. He thinks critics made up their mind before giving the games and associated peripheral an honest chance -- even in the case of Ride, which he admits "was a bit rushed" due to time spent prototyping the board.

"I think that Ride was a bit rushed for a number of reasons, mostly because probably for about the first half of the development process it was just figuring out how to make a board and how to make it work -- we were in uncharted territory," he told Joystiq during an interview at GDC. "So the game was a bit rushed, but I still feel like the critics never really gave it a chance in terms of learning how to play. They got on it and went straight into expert mode, because supposedly they're expert gamers. And they didn't really learn the mechanics of how the board works, and so I felt like they already had their mind made up before it came out. It was a gimmick and it was a peripheral and whatnot, and they never really took the time to learn how to play it."

Its sequel, Tony Hawk Shred, was the game he thought Ride should've been, Hawk said. "I thought Shred was the game I wanted Ride to be, because I really felt like the board was more than just a skateboard, and it could be used as a snowboard. But by the time Shred came out, the peripherals were fading away, so it was bad timing in that respect, I guess. But I'm proud of the idea and I'm glad we took a chance because it was something bold to try and it was bad timing in the end."

But why make a board peripheral in the first place? Hawk said it's because of the dominance of peripheral-based gaming at the time -- remember Guitar Hero? -- the introduction of the Skate series, and because the Pro Skater series had become "diluted."

"It was mostly because the series had gotten really diluted," Hawk said. "Skate was coming into play and that really split the market for us. So I thought it was really time to do something new and peripheral-based games were very big right then and I felt like we could do something that is more revolutionary -- that's what we set out to do. I really do feel like the board we created was ahead of its time. It read your every motion." And if you're one of those individuals hoping for another peripheral-based skateboarding game from the vert champ, don't hold your breath.

Hawk has no hard feelings toward the Skate series. EA would ultimately bail on the franchise after its third installment -- though EA hasn't publicly said it wouldn't return to Skate in the future -- but Hawk lauded the series for its unique control scheme. "I appreciated that someone could come out with a new control scheme for a skaterboarding game. That was very unique and progressive. Honestly, I was happy that skating had come so far as a genre in video games that you could have two main titles. Prior to that, some people had tried to do skating games, but they were just copying us." Thrasher: Skate and Destroy, anyone?

Hawk's primary focus now is on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD, something he hopes he'll be able to build upon through DLC characters and levels from other Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games.

[PC, PS3, X360] Shank 2 teaser emerges, is still violently bloody

[PC, PS3, X360] Shank 2 teaser emerges, is still violently bloody
A lot of people enjoyed the original Shank when it hit the digital platforms in 2010 on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Klei Entertainemnt have now released some teaser footage showcasing the sequel in action. Good news is: it is still bloody, it is still stylish, and it still looks like a hell of a lot of fun. Check out the brief 40 second clip below.
Shank 2 is expected to be released sometime early 2012. Presumably on the same digital platforms as the original as well.

Gamestop's Black Friday deals are about what you'd expect, still bonkers

by on Nov 12th 2011 10:30PM

Black Friday is already looking pretty crazy this year, and Gamestop won't be doing anything to reduce the amount of consumerist insanity permeating the American consciousness. If anything, the fact that its sales flier proudly boasts that limited edition Zelda 3DS on its front cover indicates a clear and unmistakable aim to misbehave, in a metaphorical, capitalist sense.

We'll save you the headache of an unwieldy bulleted list by telling you that the long and short of the sale is widely similar to other retail offerings: Discounted 360s and PS3s ($149 and $199 respectively), recent titles discounted by $10 to $30, etc. Check out the 12 page flier for complete details, and when you're tempted by these impressive discounts, remember how small and innavigable the average Gamestop is on a normal day, let alone on the busiest shopping day of the year.

Dragon Quest X is an online RPG, still for Wii [update: also Wii U!]

by on Sep 5th 2011 1:28AM

So, not only is the Wii getting one more huge game -- it's getting a huge online game. Series creator Yuji Horii introduced the first trailer for Dragon Quest X tonight at a reveal event, which culminated in a logo for "Dragon Quest X Online." Horii called it an "online RPG," which could refer either to an MMO-style game or a game in which a few players join up into small parties.

The trailer showed a convincingly cel-shaded game with a look similar to Dragon Quest VIII, with characters identified only by classes, including ogres, elves, and dwarves. A party consisting of multiple classes is shown running on a world map, and many of the series' familiar monsters, including various Slimes, are shown.

While Level-5 was responsible for the development of Dragon Quests VIII and IX, only Square Enix was named this time. We'll have more details following the conclusion of the event.

Update: A version is also being developed for Wii U. This release will have improved graphics, and will be playable cross-platform with the Wii release. In addition to this, the team is considering 3DS compatibility in the form of character transfers. Save your character to your 3DS to trade with others, basically.

Dirt 3 debuts in second on UK charts, LA Noire still tops

by on May 31st 2011 9:05AM

L.A. Noire, which premiered as the UK's fastest-selling new IP, maintained its top position on Chart-Track's UK All Formats chart this past week. Dirt 3, the only new competitor to race into the top ten, had to settle for second.

Lego Pirates of the Caribbean lost some wind in its sails and fell to third, with Brink rounding out the top five. Zumba Fitness maintained fourth, with sales up 19 percent last week. It's like Zumba Fitness was infused with that Just Dance "staying power" magic -- and as it happens, Just Dance 2, despite not being in the top ten, has been hanging around close by (at No. 11).

Price promotions helped give sales boosts to some of the top ten remainders. Check those out after the break.

THQ: Warhammer MMO will cost $50 million, uDraw still making bank

by on Mar 11th 2011 12:00AM

See, this is how you can tell you can tell we're dummies about business. If someone asked us how much we'd spend on a Warhammer MMO in a world where World of Warcraft still reigns and Blizzard has another online game in the pipeline, our answer would be "not much." But THQ's answer, when posed the same question about the upcoming Dark Millennium? Around $50 million, according to CFO Paul Pucino, speaking on a recent conference call.

Just when we're about to get snide about our business savvy, Pucino reveals that the company expects to sell 1.7 million uDraw tablets (remember the uDraw?), up from a 1.3-million-unit prediction in December of last year. 1.7 million. uDraws.

Like we said: Dummies.

The Wii has been pretty quiet as of late, but despite this Nintendo of America is reassuring that there will be more games for it.

NOA's Reggie Fils-aime had discussed with Rich George of IGN in the recent Game Scoop podcast that they are indeed preparing to deliver some more software goodies for the Wii fanbase. It may seem like it's been a trickle thus far, but they're coming soon, yes they are.

nintendo

More of us coming for your Wii!

So far, we've had Mario Sports Mix released, but it appears that there should be a couple more RPGs to be localized for this year: Xenoblade and The Last Story. A new Kirby title has been announced as well before 2010 ended, so maybe we will be getting that too.

Developers and publishers have been saying that the Wii is already on the tailend of its lifecycle, but it looks like they are still gearing up for a fight. We'll see what they've got still.

I guess they're still deciding on the gimmick to sell the next piece of obsolete technology, so they can then drop support for the wii entirely.

Nintendo: First-party titles still reign supreme

(Credit: NPD Group (via Nintendo))

Nintendo's own games continue to dominate Wii software sales, much to the chagrin of third-party developers.

Speaking during his company's earnings call on Friday, Nintendo chief Satoru Iwata unveiled the top 20 best-selling games of 2010 in the U.S. market, compiled by research firm NPD. Out of that listing, 11 of the games were available on either the Wii or the Nintendo DS. Nine out of that list were published by Nintendo. The remaining two games--Just Dance and Just Dance 2--were published by Ubisoft. No other third-party developer was able to break into the top 20 with a Wii or DS game.

For his part, Iwata seemed quite pleased with those results. "Unlike in Japan, Nintendo software titles were not the only titles for Nintendo platforms that were hits in the U.S. last year," he said.

In Japan, according to research firm MediaCreate, Nintendo's two hardware platforms secured 12 spots in the top 20 best-selling games. As Iwata pointed out, all the Wii games included in that list--seven in total--were published by Nintendo. Three of the five DS games that made it onto the list were published by Nintendo or Nintendo-owned companies, while the remaining two games were published by third-party Square Enix.

Nintendo games dominated Germany's top-selling software list too; only one title was published by a third-party. Just two third-party publishers saw strong sales on Nintendo's platforms in both France and the U.K.

(Credit: Gamespot)

Those results stand in stark contrast to other platforms. In the U.S., only one of the top-selling Xbox 360 games--Halo: Reach--was published by Microsoft. God of War III was the only Sony-published game on the list. All the others were published by third parties.

Of course, Nintendo's troubles with third-party development are nothing new. For years, the company has been the target of concerns from publishers that their titles don't perform as well on Nintendo hardware as on other devices.

That sentiment was echoed by Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello in 2009. He told investors at the time that the "Wii platform has been a little weaker" than his company has initially estimated. He pointed out that "very, very few multiplatform titles are succeeding on the Wii so far, and collectively, Electronic Arts and Nintendo need to tackle that."

Over a year later, it was clear that Riccitiello had little success in achieving that goal.

Speaking to IndustryGamers last month, Riccitiello said that Nintendo must "promote third-party content better, as opposed to first-party content." He also said that he's becoming more frustrated by Nintendo.

"I can come up with a dozen titles in the last decade, but it's really tough to come up with a dozen great titles that have been platform-defining for them that weren't their own," Riccitiello told IndustryGamers. "I don't care whether it's 'Mario' or 'Twilight Princess' or 'GoldenEye,' it was their own content. I'm going back to [Nintendo 64], and I can go back to SNES if you want, but they've never really been a heavy third-party supporting system.

"It's not lack of trying," Riccitiello went on to say. "They start the morning thinking what's best for their own intellectual property."

Lightning Fish Games CEO Simon Prytherch wasn't so quick to only blame Nintendo. In an interview in 2009, he said that gamers "have been damaged by a lot of substandard software." That has caused consumers to "only trust big Nintendo brands," he continued.

But third-party concerns pale in comparison to the other issues Nintendo faces right now. Last week, the company announced that through the nine months ended on December 31, its profit declined by 74.3 percent, compared to the same period in 2009. It blamed "slower sales and appreciation of the yen."
