X-Arcade sticks it to Black Friday with two discounted arcade platforms

by Writer RSS on Nov 17th 2012 3:00PM

XArcade sticks it to Black Friday with two discounted arcade paltformsX-Arcade, maker of American-style arcade cabinet control arrays, has discounted its Dual Joystick and Tankstick + Trackball platforms by $30 and $40 respectively, bringing the price of in-home 80's arcade realism down to $100/$160. That is, so long as you insert coin (get it?) before midnight on Sunday, November 25.

Each platform comes equipped with two bat-top style joysticks, 16 regular buttons and two first/second-player buttons. The Tankstick + Trackball configuration, as you may have guessed, also comes with a Missile Command-esque trackball installed in the middle. Both sticks connect to PC/Mac/Linux boxes through USB and to game consoles via optional adapters.

Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition is official, downloadable this spring

by on Mar 20th 2012 2:30PM

Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition is officially a thing, coming to XBLA, PSN and WiiWare this spring. Hyper Arcade Edition updates Frogger's classic core mechanics and adds new game modes, including Tile Capture, Battle Royale, Freak Out and four-player matches against friends or the CPU.

This new Frogger also totes a variety of different skins, with the version's default neon, original 8-bit sprites, and classic Castlevania and Contra skins. As noted previously, Hyper Arcade Edition is in development from Zombie Studios, the team behind Blacklight: Retribution. We're still holding out for the realistic 3D mode with frog-et launchers.

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH today announced the return of its veteran Frogger character, with Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition hopping on to PlayStation Network for PlayStation 3, Xbox LIVE Arcade for Xbox 360 and WiiWare for Wii in the Spring, 2012.

The classic coin-op's mix of skill and timing returns in its most challenging form yet, as Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition updates the core mechanics, but adds a wealth of new content and ideas. With the game currently celebrating 30 years of car-dodging, log-jumping, and road-traversing, players can jump into the action with classic and brand-new game modes including Tile Capture, Battle Royale, Freak Out and more that expand the challenge of Frogger's style of run-and-dodge gameplay.

Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition also allows users to customise their game experience through a variety of different skins, from the modern neon style of Hyper Arcade to the 8-bit sprites from the original Frogger, the classic Castlevania titles, and even Contra. Competitive types can also compete against friends or the CPU in up to four-player matches to find out who is top frog!

NYC Museum of Modern Art to co-host 'Arcade' event with Kill Screen

by on Jul 1st 2011 5:00PM

It seems the "Games as Art" debate is over, as New York City's Museum of Modern Art is co-hosting a game-centric event later this month with haute gaming mag Kill Screen. Titled "Arcade," the one-night soiree on July 27 features several great indie games (Bit.Trip Beat, Canabalt, Limbo, and "a new motion-based Kinect project" from current Harmonix employees Ryan Challinor and Matt Boch, as seen here). The games will be playable throughout various parts of the museum, including the MoMA's gorgeous sculpture garden. That's where we'll be hanging out, in case that wasn't clear.

You may be wondering how the folks at Kill Screen finagled a gaming night at one of the world's most famous art museums, and we were too. It turns out that the event is part of MoMA's "Talk to Me" exhibit, which explores "the communication between people and objects." Video games seem like a perfect fit, no?

If the incredible location and selection of great games weren't enough to convince you, tickets are just $16 in advance and $20 at the door, which entitles you to "an exclusive viewing, a cocktail reception, a tote bag," as well as the aforementioned opportunity to play games at the MoMA. We'll also be there in our sharpest outfit handing out exaggerated high fives, so keep an eye out!

Update: This post originally pegged Ryan Challinor and Matt Boch as former Harmonix employees, when in fact they are both still employed at the studio. Sorry guys!
