Kid Icarus: Uprising prototype began on Wii and PC

by on Mar 30th 2012 5:00AM

Before Kid Icarus: Uprising became the carpal tunnel syndrome-inducing good time it is today, it began development on the PC and Wii. In a new Iwata Asks column, designer Masahiro Sakurai shares the story of development and some neat prototype videos showcasing Kid Icarus: Uprising as it was way before its E3 2010 unveiling. At the outset, Sakurai's company Project Sora didn't even have 3DS dev kits, so they had to start on PC and Wii.

The videos -- uploaded to YouTube by Siliconera and embedded above and past the break -- were created to illustrate Sakurai's vision to new dev-team members coming onto the project. Iwata admits the reason it took so long to get Kid Icarus: Uprising out the door was having to port the already established work on PC and Wii over to 3DS.

[3DS] Review Roundup - Kid Icarus: Uprising

[3DS] Review Roundup - Kid Icarus: Uprising
[Image: game-news-image-2012-dff4bea7488463649d1...5d7e9f.jpg]Eurogamer - 9/10 - "Kid Icarus: Uprising is a strong, pretty game turned into an essential one by way of its surrounding infrastructure. Its weave of systems hauls you back in to replay stages time after time; the sense of progress and acquisition is a powerful, irresistible loop. Most significantly, it reveals a Nintendo we haven't seen for some time, eager to innovate in ways that will excite its hardcore fans, focusing on competition, struggle and mastery. Reaching for the sky."

Game Informer - 7/10 - "Kid Icarus: Uprising is a series of good ideas that ultimately suffer from its poor controls. There’s a lot to do in the game, and more importantly, I felt compelled to do all of it. As the credits rolled I looked back fondly at the experience, as my hand throbbed along with the music. I’m looking forward to doing more with Pit in the future, just not like this."

EGM - 8.5/10 - "When all is said and done, although the controls may be frustrating at times and take some getting used to, this is a very solid game. Great visuals, tremendous depth of game play modes, and a fully realized plot that is brilliantly executed on every level makes this probably a must have for every 3DS owner out there."

IGN - 8.5/10 - "Kid Icarus Uprising is a fantastic game full of superb action, stunning graphics and art design, incredible music (truly some of Nintendo's best), humorous dialogue and solid gameplay. Despite that, it suffers from an equal number of problems, including some very frustrating and awkward controls, a fairly repetitive level structure, characters that talk too much and action that sometimes overwhelms the 3DS's relatively small screen."

Detructoid - 5/10 - "Kid Icarus: Uprising is equal parts tremendous and terrible, with a fine line clearly separating the two distinct territories. Unfortunately, since each stage ends on a sour note, the overall emotion one gains is that of bitter disappointment. It's a game that repeatedly starts strong and ends despicably, and as much as I want to adore it, I ended every session cursing its name. For its humor, its ambition, and its genuinely thrilling flight segments, it deserves a lot of credit. However, everything else it does is a bitter pill to swallow and damages all the genuine good that has been accomplished. Truly a shame."

RE: [3DS] Review Roundup - Kid Icarus: Uprising
Technically, I am a child Toungue

But still, I guess it's just what perspective you put it in. If your one of those people who takes their time to respect the beauty of the game, then you enjoy it, if your someone who just rushes through it to get it done, you don't enjoy it as much, and if h
your one of those guys who just doesn't care about it and just want's companies to get on with stuff you prefer, then really, what was the point in buying the game?

Kid Icarus: Uprising AR Card Scan Collection [137 Scans Currently!]

Kid Icarus: Uprising releases this Friday in the US, and one huge aspect of the game are the AR Cards. The game comes with 6 random AR Cards out of a possible 20, but Nintendo has said there are hundreds to collect in Series 1 (we know there are at least 404 AR Cards based on the numbering). In some cases, there will be booster packs distributed at various events and since it may be hard to collect them all, I thought it would be beneficial to compile a list of all the cards with links to scans of them so you can print them out and use them. I will continue to update this list as we get more scans. Enjoy!

UPDATE: I have 137 scans and 173 cards listed (out of at least 404 cards), as of March 22nd.

Multiplayer Modes Revealed for Kid Icarus: Uprising

MULTIPLE MULTIPLAYER MODES REVEALED IN KID ICARUS: UPRISING FOR NINTENDO 3DS

Feb. 22, 2012

Nintendo has revealed new details on the different multiplayer modes in Kid Icarus: Uprising, which will launch exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS system on March 23. More than 25 years after the launch of the original Kid Icarus game for NES, Kid Icarus: Uprising brings the action and adventure of this beloved series to new heights. Modes and features in the new game include:

Light vs. Dark: Team up with other players in Light vs. Dark multiplayer mode, in which two teams of three are pitted against one another. The ultimate goal is to empty the opposing team’s health meter, which transforms the last defeated team member into an angel. The team who defeats the opposing team’s angel wins. This unique multiplayer mode tests players’ ability to work as a team while keeping the match exciting as the focus constantly shifts from dealing out damage to protecting the team angel.Free-for-All: In this mode, up to six players (including CPU players) combat each other in a winner-takes-all match. Winners are determined by high score, heavily influenced by both the number of kills and the number of deaths.Match Set-up: Both Light vs. Dark and Free-for-All multiplayer modes are playable through local wireless play or online for players with broadband Internet access. CPU players will fill out the roster if there are fewer than six players in a match. Duration of the match, CPU difficulty, weapons and team handicaps are all customizable prior to beginning a multiplayer battle.Weapons and Weapon Fusion: The wide variety of weapons a player has collected in single-player mode can be used during multiplayer matches. Players can also earn additional weapons as rewards in multiplayer play. Players can choose set combinations of weapons and powers before entering into a match. This provides further incentive for players to continue collecting different and more powerful weapons as they play through the single-player campaign. Players can also fuse weapons together at the Arms Altar. Fusing two weapons will result in a single, more powerful weapon that retains some of the key benefits of each, giving players the ability to customize weapons to match their play style. Fused weapons can also be used in multiplayer matches.StreetPass: Through the StreetPass functionality of the Nintendo 3DS hardware, players have the ability to share one of their weapons with other Kid Icarus: Uprising owners. The selected weapon is turned into a Weapon Gem. Shared Weapon Gems can be converted into real weapons by paying Hearts. Players can also fuse Weapon Gems together by paying Hearts to create a more powerful Weapon.

Consumers who pre-order Kid Icarus: Uprising via GameStop, Best Buy and Amazon.com will receive a bonus download code for the 3D Classics: Kid Icarus game, a re-mastered 3D version of the NES original. The download code will be given to customers who pre-ordered Kid Icarus: Uprising at the time of the actual game purchase. Retailers may require a deposit for pre-orders. Kid Icarus: Uprising will carry a suggested retail price of $39.99 in the United States.

Kid Icarus: Uprising launches across North America on March 23. For more information, please visit http://kidicarusuprising.nintendo.com.

NEW STORY AND SINGLE-PLAYER MODE DETAILS REVEALED FOR KID ICARUS: UPRISING

Jan. 19, 2012

Nintendo has revealed new details about the storyline and single-player game play in Kid Icarus™: Uprising, which will launch exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS™ system on March 23. More than 25 years after the launch of the original Kid Icarus game for NES™, Kid Icarus: Uprising brings the action and adventure of this beloved series to new heights.

Introduction: The game’s story begins with the return of the dark goddess Medusa and her Underworld Army. With the help of Palutena, goddess of light and guardian of the human race, the heroic angel Pit must combat the forces of darkness as he battles Medusa and her minions by air and by land.Fiend’s Cauldron: The Fiend’s Cauldron is an incredible new system that allows players to customize their play experience by adjusting the intensity level. Intensity ranges from 0.0 – 9.0 for each individual Chapter. As the intensity increases, players will be able to earn more Hearts and more powerful weapon drops from defeated enemies. Hearts also can be used to purchase new weapons. The standard intensity setting is 2.0, but players can precisely adjust it by increments of 0.1. In order to increase the intensity, players must bet by placing an increasing number of Hearts into the Fiend’s Cauldron. If the player is defeated during the Chapter, some Hearts will be lost and the intensity will be lowered.Weapons: A wide variety of collectible weapons offers an extraordinary amount of replay value. With nine different categories of weapons, ranging from Bows to Claws, players can learn the unique characteristics of each weapon and determine which is best suited for each battle and their style of play.Vehicles: During certain parts of his adventure, Pit will have access to special vehicles such as the Exo Tank. Pit can use the tank’s powerful drift ability to boost over jumps or defeat enemies with the tank’s ramming horn.Stand: Kid Icarus: Uprising uses a control scheme designed to fit the game’s unique blend of flight, shooting and melee combat, and offers tremendous precision and depth for dedicated players. Nintendo has something for everyone, from family fun to three-dimensional adventure.

On the Nintendo 3DS system, Capcom's Resident Evil® Revelations launches on Feb. 7. In a new chapter of the hit survival-horror franchise, players fight a new enemy and virus in 3D without the need for special glasses. METAL GEAR SOLID® 3D Snake Eater from Konami arrives in the first quarter of 2012. The game is a re-interpretation of METAL GEAR SOLID 3: Snake Eater, and offers a rich jungle world with customizable stealth and camouflage options. On March 23, the epic odyssey Kid Icarus™: Uprising soars into stores and lets players help the winged warrior Pit fight Medusa and her Underworld Army.

The Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS will also be busy with a variety of downloadable offerings. Dillon's Rolling Western™ brings tower-defense strategy and touch-screen driven action to the Old West. Armadillo ranger Dillon defends pioneer villages against waves of attacking rock monsters using gun towers, defensive structures and his own exciting attack abilities. In Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword™, players travel to ancient Japan and guide a young warrior as he battles waves of enemy soldiers. Players must identify the enemy's attack, dodge and counter-attack with the mystical Sakura Sword to win the battle. The critically acclaimed VVVVVV and NightSky from Nicalis, mind-bending action of Mighty Switch Force from WayForward and immersive 3D visuals of Mutant Mudds™ from Renegade Kid™ round out a diverse selection of downloadable games.

Nintendo is also introducing an optional accessory that gives Nintendo 3DS owners a second analog stick to control compatible games. The Circle Pad Pro will launch in the United States on Feb. 7. It will be sold through GameStop stores and online at http://www.gamestop.com at a suggested retail price of $19.99. The Circle Pad Pro is a comfortable cradle that holds the Nintendo 3DS system while adding an analog Circle Pad on the system's right side. The attachment also adds additional shoulder buttons to give it a feel more akin to traditional console controllers. It is designed as an optional accessory and is compatible with Resident Evil Revelations and METAL GEAR SOLID 3D Snake Eater.

On the Wii console, Rhythm Heaven™ Fever arrives on Feb. 13 at a suggested retail price of $29.99 in the United States. The game asks players to test their rhythm in more than 50 easy-to-learn, tough-to-master minigames to prove they've got the groove. Two weeks later on Feb. 27, PokéPark™ 2: Wonders Beyond lets players take on the role of Pikachu™ and his Pals - Oshawott™, Snivy™ and Tepig™ - as they try to make it through PokéPark and discover the secrets of a mysterious new world. On March 11, Mario™ and friends reunite for a new party game adventure in Mario Party™ 9, which introduces new game-play elements to the series such as boss battles and vehicular travel across a wide assortment of stages.

Kid Icarus: Uprising Comic-Con Blade Footage (Cam)

Story

The plot of Kid Icarus: Uprising follows the angelic protagonist, Pit, as he battles with the forces of a reborn Medusa who seeks to destroy mankind. Pit will also utilize the ability of flight granted by Palutena called the “Miracle of Flight” to aid him in flying to different worlds so he could fight massive monsters.

Gameplay

The E3 2010 trailer of the game showed a mixture of both air and ground combat, featuring Pit battling monsters, including Twinbellows and Hewdraw, bosses from the first game, in his quest to stop Medusa. Nintendo described the game as “a fast-paced and action-packed blend of aerial and ground-based shooting built on elegantly intuitive and streamlined play control. Boasting game play that is easy to pick up, but incredibly deep, the game is sure to satisfy novice gamers as well as fans who have been clamoring for a new installment in the franchise.”

Pit will have multiple different weapons to choose from. A blade, claws, and Orbiting Options have already been confirmed, with several others currently unnamed. Weapons are chosen for use in a level that is divided into three parts. The first is a flying section that requires Pit to fire at oncoming enemies while reaching his destination. The second is a ground part where Pit fights groups of ground enemies and advances to the area where the boss lies, and the third area is the boss battle that wraps up the level. The levels in the game will be called chapters. Like Nintendo’s Star Fox series, there will be voice acting with Pit, Palutena, Medusa, and other characters speaking to each other during gameplay at cutscenes.

There will also be a health bar on the upper left side of the top screen that shows Pit’s endurance. It will go down each time Pit is damaged until it becomes empty and he dies. Various kinds of food is scattered throughout the level and replenishes Pit’s health if he touches it, not unlike in Super Smash Bros..

Multiplayer

The E3 2011 trailer depicted up to 6 players competing in either a Team Deathmatch or Free For All style multiplayer game. Weapons identical to the ones seen in singleplayer can be used against opponents in order to frag the opponent in order to win a match.

[360, PS3] Hard Corps: Uprising Review

[360, PS3] Hard Corps: Uprising Review [Image: game-news-image-2011-bf8110e4ae7cfd6460c...4563d0.jpg][Image: game-news-image-2011-b90ed342865bc1d1f5a...b0914d.jpg]

Title - Hard Corps: Uprising
Platforms - XBLA (Xbox 360), PSN (PS3)
Genre - Run and Gun
Release Date - Wednesday February 16th, 2011
PSN: TBA 2011

Another year another party on Xbox Live Arcade. Last year we were graced with the Block Party promotion which delivered us Perfect Dark, Scrap Metal, Toy Soldiers and the arcade game platform Game Room. This year things fall into a similar scheme with the House Party promotion Hard Corps: Uprising, Bejeweled Blitz, Beyond Good and Evil HD, Torchlight and a more abstract product in Full House Poker that aims to continue the community/competition based success of 1 Vs 100.

Back to the now with the first release of the 5 week promotion - Hard Corps: Uprising. The 13th game released in the classic Contra franchise, acting as a prequel to Contra: Hard Corps. The eagle eyed readers amongst you will realize this newest entry has dropped the Contra name and the game's producer, Kenji Yamamoto, has explained he hopes Hard Corps to become its own series. Though after playing through Hard Corps: Uprising I'm not sure why as the game is as Contra as it gets. And that's not a bad thing. In sticking to tried and tested methods of gameplay with slight adjustments and a visual overhaul Arc System have crafted an excellent title for Xbox Live Arcade that'll soon be gracing the Playstation Network too.

[Image: reviewscore--|9|8|5|7.png]If you have played a Contra game before you'll feel immediately at home in Hard Corps: Uprising as the game fundamentally plays the same. Essentially point A to point B traveling left to right by running, jumping or even riding a vehicle. Enemies will spawn all around you and you have to gun them down in order to progress and you'll eventually reach one of the many climactic boss battles in which you'll have to memorize patterns and use your reflexes in order to defeat it and move on. From the moment you press start you're running the gauntlet. However there is more, much more, to this game than the simple mechanics suggest.

In sticking to tried and tested methods of gameplay with slight adjustments and a visual overhaul Arc System have crafted an excellent title for Xbox Live Arcade that'll soon be gracing the Playstation Network too.

If you have played a Contra game before you'll feel immediately at home in Hard Corps: Uprising as the game fundamentally plays the same.

The game is set in 2613 and the world is under the oppressive rule of the dictatorship of the Commonwealth forces. You play as Bahamut, or as one of his squad members, as a resistance force that are up against impossible odds in order to defeat the Commonwealth. Don't worry, the game doesn't take itself too seriously and neither should you.

Though while the original Contra game may seem very America based - A commando fighting off alien invaders against a Vietnam-like backdrop. Hard Corps: Uprising has a very anime and manga based influence and this shines through in the presentation choices by Arc System. Anyone who has played their previous games such as BlazBlue will notice the care they have put into the presentation. The game starts off with a beautifully crafted anime cut scene that wouldn't look out of place in a TV series. Playing during the cut scene is a memorable rock piece with a surging guitar throughout, which reminded me of the previous Konami game on XBLA arcade (Castlevania: Harmony of Despair) which had a heavy rock soundtrack. The anime opening sequence should serve as a warning this game is not for the faint of heart, non-stop action through out and this carries over onto the game. The aesthetically pleasing presentation carries over into the game as the backdrop and certain foreground elements are 3D on a 2D plain whereas your character and the foot soldiers are hand drawn characters. A whole new approach for the series that pays off as it looks utterly wonderful.

BANG. BANG. BANG. BOOM. WOOOOOSH.
The gameplay while familiar has been enhanced. The HUD is simple and effective for this arcade-like experience, in the top left of the screen you have your score counter, your health and your lives as well as your two power ups which you can switch at will using the Y button. Throughout the levels you'll have to collect, switch out and upgrade the power ups that will be familiar to fans of the previous games - the scatter shot, among others return. You can shoot in 7 directions while moving and can go prone if you press down though if you hold the right trigger you become stationary and can then shoot directly downwards giving you an 8th direction to shoot. pressing A allows you to jump, pressing it twice gives a double jump. It is X to shoot, holding it will shoot automatically. The controls are precise and accessible though easy to learn and hard to master as the game gets extremely difficult and you'll have to have twitch reflexes and complete mastery of these controls in order to get past some of the situations the game will pit against you. The game changes on certain occasions for example during a Stage one boss fight you'll be riding a vehicle and therefore have to focus on driving, avoiding the bosses attacks and finding opportunities for you to attack - it becomes a juggling act.

The game has two modes. First up is the classic arcade mode, three hits and you lose a life. Start off with three lives and gain extra ones through the levels. No saving of progress. You die, you start from the beginning. It is a challenge for anyone to beat this mode and is the classic staple of the franchise. However in order to make the game more accessible to newcomers Arc System Works have added Uprising mode. Uprising mode starts off like Arcade mode however you now accumulate points and these points can be spent on permanent upgrades which make the game easier to tackle. These upgrades include more continues, better weapons, new dash techniques etc. Taking the sting out of the otherwise brutal yet addictive gameplay. The addition of these points not only gives you rewards but it also adds re-playability as you'll want to grind in order to unlock more and more of the upgrades. Another saving grace for those who find the game difficult is the addition of local or online co-op gameplay, having an extra gun on your side is a huge bonus and is a ton of fun however it is a double edged sword as now there is two of you to attack and if you have a less-experienced player with you then they will only hinder your chances of success.

As I previously mentioned the heavy rock piece in the intro is a scene of things to come and similar rock compositions are heard throughout the game and are top quality, though if you're not a fan they'll become repetitive and annoying. Also the enemies' death cries are low-quality and low in quantity so they fast become repetitive as if they weren't annoying enough as it was.

[Image: reviewscore--|9|8|5|7.png]In conclusion Hard Corps: Uprising is a breath of fresh air into the Contra franchise, familiar yet completely new thanks to the excellent work of Arc System Works. Not only have they managed to cater for fans of the old games with the legendary difficulty but also managed to make the game more accessible to new comers, separately, by the inclusion of the fantastic Uprising mode and multiplayer. Also Arc Systems have worked their magic overhauling the games presentation and visuals making it a visually pleasing experience mixing hand drawn characters and 3D elements on a 2D plane. The guitar riffs while pleasing for some become repetitive and don't cater for everyone and the sounds of weapons shooting are quiet and low quality. The death cries of your enemies are incredibly limited and annoying. Finally it's hard to comment on the length of a game like this as some people will beat it in one attempt, others will never get past stage one. I'd say the average gamer could spend several hours playing this across all the modes and that would include trying to beat arcade and improving, unlocking things in Uprising mode. Some gamers however may spend 10 minutes on stage 1 get annoyed and never play it again. While I would heavily recommend this game to anyone who knows what they're getting into I'd recommend those new to the Run and Gun genre to try out the demo first.
