Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two life-to-date sales 529K in US

by Alexander Sliwinski Writer RSS on Jan 29th 2013 4:30PM

Disney's multiplatform Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two sold 529,000 units over November and December of 2012 in the United States, according to new data provided by the NPD group. Joystiq was also informed that sales of Epic Mickey 2, plus Nintendo 3DS title Disney Epic Mickey: The Power of Illusion, across North America reached 695,000 units over the same period. An unconfirmed report previously pegged Epic Mickey 2's sales at 270,000 copies.

Disney Epic Mickey developer Junction Point Studios was closed today, with the House of Mouse noting it was due to an ongoing effort to address fast-evolving gaming platforms and the marketplace.

Junction Point was the last studio standing of Disney's previous attempt to break into the triple-A "core" market, with many studios lost along the way, including the critically acclaimed Pure and Split/Second developer Black Rock Studios. Disney has readjusted its sights and is now developing Disney Infinity.

The news of the magazine's end broke back in August, but yesterday some of the now former staffers revealed on Twitter they'd completed the last issue, and the office had closed its doors. That final issue should be out on December 11.

Former Nintendo Power staffers tell insider tales

by Writer RSS on Aug 29th 2012 9:30AM

Former Nintendo Power staffers get nostalgicFormer Nintendo Power staffers have gathered their fond memories of working at the magazine that'll cease publication this December.

Hands in the Air, written by a pair of former editors, shares many anecdotes from the publication's glory days. One of the best includes StarFox's Falco "Rambaldi" cited as "Lombardi" in the Star Fox 64 player's guide and that name sticking for years. There's also the mini quote about the belief that the Pokemon TV show would "NEVER be successful in the US."

It's a sweet walk down memory lane and interesting to see the insider's view. Share your personal memories in our "Nintendo Power remembered" post.

Nintendo Power coming to an end

by Writer RSS on Aug 21st 2012 2:00PM

Nintendo Power coming to an endNintendo has chosen not to renew its licensing agreement with Future Publishing (the company that currently produces Nintendo Power) and has no intentions to take over the publication itself, according to insider sources speaking to Ars Technica. A now-deleted tweet from NP staff suggested this was accurate.
Reportedly "difficult to work with," Nintendo is said to have taken no interest in working with Future on expanded online initiatives to strengthen the Nintendo Power brand. Editors and staff members were told that the magazine would be shut down sometime last week and have since begun transitioning to other Future publications, according to Ars Technica's source.

We've reached out to Future Publishing and Nintendo for comment. Originally launching in 1988, Nintendo Power was run in-house by Nintendo until the property was licensed to Future in 2007.

Steve Wozniak secretly submitted Tetris scores to Nintendo Power

by Writer RSS on Jul 20th 2012 5:30PM

Wozniak secretly submitted Tetris scores to Nintendo PowerAside from his tech eminence having helped found Apple, Steve Wozniak is apparently also a pretty sick Tetris player. He only plays the original Game Boy port, and admits he submitted his scores to Nintendo Power back in the day.

"I was always #1 in the Nintendo Power listings in 1988, and after they said my name had been in there too many times and wouldn't print it again, I spelled my name backwards (Evets Kainzow) and sent in a photo of my score," Wozniak said in a comment on a Gizmodo piece about him. "When I got the magazine, I'd forgotten doing this and was worried that a foreigner from the next city over (I used Saratoga instead of Los Gatos so they wouldn't catch on) had a score up in my range. I got worried but then remembered my joke. Whew! It's in some old issue of Nintendo Power magazine."

Reddit user polar0ids was quick to call Woz's bluff, but it (unsurprisingly) turns out to be a true story. As seen here in this thread, the story checks out. There's Evets Kainzow's score: 546,145 points.

[PS3, Wii, X360] Epic Mickey is getting a sequel titled 'Power of Two'

[PS3, Wii, X360] Epic Mickey is getting a sequel titled 'Power of Two'
[Image: game-news-image-2012-a09444d65b4acd90f89...3a8262.jpg]
Rumours had been swirling for awhile that we'd be hearing news on a potential Epic Mickey sequel, well now we know that it is fact. You can check the full report over at AP for a whole stack of quotes.

Here's a brief rundown though, the game will be coming to Nintendo's Wii, Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360. It will also feature drop-in / drop-out co-op featuring Mickey Mouse & Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, they'll be fixing the game's camera issues that were a pretty big talking point in the original game, and will even feature full voice acting this time around.

That's not all though, Warren Spector also has mentioned that musicals will be playing a part (it is part of the reason that voice acting was a necessity). "I'm such a geek about musicals. I love the co-op and next-gen stuff, but for me, when a character breaks into song, which they do on a regular basis in this game, it's magic." It will also mark the first time in history that Oswald has been voiced, so that's a fair amount of pressure to be under.

Stay tuned for more details on Disney's Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two.

'Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two' coming to Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360

by on Mar 21st 2012 12:00PM

Yes, there's a sequel to Disney Epic Mickey. A tweet from Geoff Keighley first confirmed the title (of a game his show will reveal on TV as a "world premiere") as Disney Epic Mickey (2): The Power of Two. Then a piece from the AP went ahead and confirmed everything else.

It's coming out for Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360, and features drop-in, drop-out co-op play with Mickey Mouse and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Oswald is AI-controlled when another person is not around, and can be controlled at any time by a second player, who then wields Oswald's "remote" ability to control electricity.

Other new developments for this now-official game include full voice acting, including the first voice work for Oswald in Disney history. That voice acting will be used to make the game a for-real musical. "I'm such a geek about musicals," Junction Point studio head Warren Spector told the AP. "I love the co-op and next-gen stuff, but for me, when a character breaks into song, which they do on a regular basis in this game, it's magic."

Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion confirmed for 3DS

While many speculated if Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion would come to the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Power magazine has confirmed. While not too many details are known, the cover of the magazine definitely confirms that the game will exist.

Update: As it turns out, this will be a sequel to the 1990 Sega Genesis game, Castle of Illusion.” It will be a side-scroller but still keep the painting mechanic, incorporating the stylus.

In Theory: Can Wii U Offer Next-Gen Power?

GameIndustry.biz wrote up a fairly extensive opinion piece about the power of the Wii U, have a read of this excerpt:

In theory, we could look at laptops here as an example of getting powerful chips working in smaller areas. The problem here is that high-power mobile GPUs are highly ‘binned’ – they’re the pick of the production crop of processors destined for a broad range of different graphics cards. Mobile parts are typically the very best chips, the cream of the crop, capable of great performance at low voltages. Nintendo would not have this luxury on a mass-production item with a single design, where high efficiency is the key to keeping costs down as much as possible.

Realistically, short of a major architectural shift to components based on smartphone tech – and lots of it – the idea of Wii U possessing next-gen rendering capabilities doesn’t make a lot of sense. We know that there’s no transition to mobile tech because the IBM CPU is an off-shoot of an existing line and the firm doesn’t make mobile CPUs. Similarly, while AMD has produced smartphone GPUs, none of them get close to the performance of the Xbox 360's Xenos GPU. That being the case, the chances are that it’s a customised variant of an existing PC Radeon part: Japanese sources have previously hinted at a connection to the Radeon HD 4000 series – and a lower-end chip from that range would be a good fit.

With the IBM chip confirmed at a 45nm process – the same as the current Xbox 360 – the question then moves on to how the graphics chip is made. TSMC, the most probable candidate for actually producing the chip, has just moved onto a 28nm process, and will be ramping up production throughout the year. But any new node typically starts with low production yields, so Nintendo would need to either swallow the cost (Microsoft did this at the launch of the 360 with the then state-of-the-art 90nm Xenos GPU) or downclock the chip. It’s far more likely that sticking to the existing, established 40nm process for AMD GPUs would actually be cheaper for them in the short term – and would provide cost-savings in the future when the chip could be shrunk economically.

But let’s assume that Nintendo does push the boat out here. Even a 45nm CPU and a 28nm GPU in a box that small is still likely to cause cooling issues for an actual “next-gen” 360 beater. The more probable 45nm CPU/40nm GPU combo combined with the size of the machine suggests a far more likely scenario: that Wii U has a ballpark performance level with current PS3 and Xbox 360 titles, perhaps actually lower. Across the years, chip designs may have become more refined and efficient but it’s worthwhile to point out that almost all major increases in processing power have mostly come from shrinks in the fabrication process meaning that more transistors can be packed into the same amount of silicon.

The final nail in the coffin about a notional 2x increase in power over the Xbox 360 comes from Nintendo itself. At no point has the platform holder ever suggested that Wii U offers that kind of leap in processing power, an extraordinary omission considering the amount of money Nintendo would need to invest in this architecture. The focus of the platform holder’s message is of course on where the money has been spent: the tablet controller, with its zero latency link to the console – technology that must have been fairly expensive.

But is there anything in the package that could give the Wii U an advantage over the PS3 and Xbox 360, aside from the tablet controller? We should look at the commodities that have collapsed in price over the past few years, and could prove genuinely useful for a games machine. RAM is the obvious choice: a 1GB minimum wouldn’t break the bank and would help developers significantly. The pre-E3 rumour of 8GB of flash RAM also makes sense, especially when we bear in mind that there is no internal hard drive. The Wii U optical drive – almost certainly based on Blu-ray technology – could also be faster than its PS3 equivalent too. This may be useful bearing in mind that the lack of HDD would preclude mandatory installs.

Looking pretty good, here's hoping he'll be available on the PlayStation 3 version of the game as well.
