by Sinan Kubba Writer RSS on Nov 21st 2013 11:15AM

As eShop weeks go, this one's a bit spectacular. A new five-star Zelda? Check! A new five-star Mario? Check again! What's more, you'll be able to download them as soon as today becomes tomorrow, midnight sharp.

Wait, you want more? You're genuinely not satisfied with Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, both games we awarded five stars to? Really?

Not even if we chuck in a week-long sale that lasers 30 percent off Mega Man 1-4 on 3DS and Wii U? Surely you aren't that greedy?

Fine.... fine. Fine. Be like that. Let's go through the whole list already.

Super Mario 3D World Hip-Hop Remix by Dj Cutman

Dj Cutman has released his hip-hop remix of the Super Mario 3D World theme. Check it out.

Free Download | http://http//on.fb.me/18sSD9I

If you like this remix, remember to Like, Comment and Subscribe! This is my remix of Nintendo’s Super Mario 3D World’s main level music / overworld theme. I saw the video of musicians playing this in the recording studio and I was so inspired that I couldn’t help but make this hiphop infused remix! Super Mario 3D World is out now on Wii U, and it is awesome. This tune was originally composed by Koji Kondo, Mahito Yokota, Toru Minegishi, and Yasuaki Iwata.

The soundwaves on the top and bottom of the screen are captured from my Ableton Live project. The top waveform is my remixed drums and percussion, the bottom is the original song. Check out the walkthrough of my project file: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvxpAj…

Footage from Eurogamer (clearly). Thanks for the awesome video, guys!

ALBUM REVIEW – World 1-2: The Complete Collection

Album review by Steve Cullum

world1-2_collection_koopa-soundworks_discfun

Album – World 1-2: The Complete Collection
Artist – Various Artists
Label – Koopa Soundworks
Obtained – Review Copy from Scarlet Moon Promotions

What would you say if I told you there was a collection of 34 tracks from various video games available via download or a three-disc set? What if I told you that list included songs from Mario, Sonic, Metroid, Zelda, Fire Emblem, and more? What if I told you many of the tracks are performed by the original artists? If you’re getting excited, you may want to read on to find out what Koopa Soundworks’ “World 1-2: The Complete Collection” is all about.

Content

I must start out talking about the sheer size of this collection. It brings past projects in with new ones into a massive 34 tracks from various games throughout history. It ranges from Tetris and Mega Man X3 to Street Fighter II and Metroid Prime. The collection itself is quite vast. Despite your favorite game genre, platform, or composer, most listeners will find something they enjoy. In fact, if you are like me, you will also increase your preference list as you listen to the rest of the track list.

From a Nintendo standpoint, they did a great job of collecting songs from the top franchises. You have first-party games like Super Mario World, Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid Prime, Fire Emblem, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. You also have third-parties like Mega Man (3, 5, & X3), Tetris, and Street Fighter II. Not only did they pick popular franchises, but they also chose some of the popular songs from each game. You will definitely recognize the songs from Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Mega Man, for example. All in all, it seems that any Nintendo fan will be delighted to hear tunes from their favorite game.

(The full tracklist is available at the bottom of this review.)

Production Quality

While this is a collection, meaning that many different artists and groups have come together, the overall quality is extremely high. Many of the songs have a full orchestra, while others seem like they are composed using computers. Either way, they all sound fantastic. Many of the songs are even remixed, in order to add their own syle and flavor to the popular tune. Sure, some fans may not enjoy this, but I believe most will be very pleased with the outcome. It will be hard to complain about the quality of the music and the overall production value in World 1-2.

Value

With 34 tracks, it is easy to assume this collection will cost you over $30. It is, however, lower than that. You can grab the three-disc set for $24 (USD), or you can download the entire collection for a mere $16. For those of you math fanatics out there, that is about 47 cents per track. On top of that, they even give you the option, via BandCamp.com, to download the songs one-at-a-time for $1 per track. Honestly, I believe downloading the full album is the best value. Even though $24 might not seem like a large sum of cash, it is significantly more than the download-only price. Still, it might be worth it for those who want higher than mp3-quality sound or those who want a limited-edition package. In the end, all the options make it a great value for any video game music fan.

FINAL SCORE: 9.5 out of 10

World 1-2 is a great collection of video game music from a long list of fantastic composers and artists. Fans of Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Fire Emblem will certainly be pleased with this collection. In fact, it may even get them, if they haven’t already, to broaden their tastes for all video game music. If you are looking for a large collection that will not break the bank, go ahead and order World 1-2: The Complete Collection from Koopa Soundworks.

+ Large and vast collection.
+ High production value.
+ Remixes add new flavor.

- Remixes might be too much for some fans.
– Not enough Nintendo music (only halfway kidding; we are a Nintendo site, after all).

Nintendo started their Nintendo Direct off with some new information regarding Sonic Lost World, it was also accompanied with some new footage.

Firstly, Nintendo confirmed that Sonic Lost World will be available for the Wii U and 3DS on October 18th in Europe and on October 22nd in North America.

Secondly, the stream revealed that the game includes special radio controlled gadgets that players will be able to create and customise on the 3DS version of the game. After they've created a gadget they are happy with they'll be able to send it to the Wii U version and use it in the game's co-operative multiplayer modes.

Lastly, here's the footage that was shown in the stream courtesy of GameXplain.

This game actually looks quite good, it could be the first Sonic game worth keeping an eye on in a long while. What will you be picking it up for; Wii U or 3DS?

Just go buy Monster World IV

by Writer RSS on Oct 22nd 2012 5:30PM

Welcome to Living in the Past, a weekly column about what's new in old games. Now get off our lawn.
It is with no small amount of shame that I admit to waiting for a $1 sale before buying Monster World IV. It wasn't exactly intentional – I've been busy playing (and mostly reviewing) other stuff since its release, and just hadn't gotten to it yet. Then, last week, a PlayStation Plus deal dropped the PSN release of the Genesis game from $4.99 to $1.

Of course I bought it for $1, just assuming I'd get a chance to play it later. You should do the same. Go buy it now, before the PlayStation Store updates again tomorrow and the deal goes away. Then you can share in the savings (and the shame).

Why is it shameful to spend $1 on this game instead of the full $5? This isn't just any Genesis port. Monster World IV, a sort of sequel or spinoff of the Wonderboy series (don't worry about that too much), had never actually been released in English before Sega put it on PSN, XBLA and Wii Virtual Console in May. Sega even localized it, adding full English text for this budget-priced digital release. With that surprising amount of effort, I'm a heel for getting it on the cheap.

I stole an hour or so to try out my new game – just enough time to know that it's easily worth one US dollar. Even if you're not familiar with previous Wonderboy games, this is a worthwhile title. Besides, it's a totally original story. It's about a young girl named Asha, who goes on a quest to earn the title of "Warrior," and is then asked to rescue four elemental gods.

That first quest involves searching her town for the "Courage Crystal," which is required to make a tower appear. Asha ventures from her hometown, with everyone cheering her on, then makes her way through a gauntlet of slime monsters and evil mushroom creatures. The tower then rises out of the ground, full of traps, deadly monsters and treasure chests. Each main hallway has several rooms that must be explored to find keys and trigger the appearance of platforms to get you to the next level. At the end, Asha fights a big snake creature ... thing.

What really surprised me about this adorably drawn, beautifully animated game is that ... it feels so much like a Zelda game. Imagine a game that combined the storytelling and level design of A Link to the Past and the side-scrolling view and mechanics of Zelda 2. That's what Monster World IV is shaping up to be, based on this extremely promising first quest. It also has the Metroidvania thing of opening up more of the world based on acquired abilities, but that still reminds me more of Zelda than anything else, thanks to the other similarities.

I want to say we should support things like this to send the message that we want more localized classics ... but I have no confidence something like this will happen with any kind of frequency. So support it because it's cool, and because it's rare.

Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes and a whole new (open) world

by Writer RSS on May 22nd 2012 1:30PM

We know, we know... another Lego game based on a popular franchise? But Lego Batman 2: DC Super Hereoes is looking to be different, featuring an open world and the borderline blasphemy of talking Lego characters. Also, we'd be lying if we said that the exchange between Batman and Superman in this trailer didn't make us smirk.

NintendoWare Weekly: Monster World IV

by Writer RSS on May 10th 2012 3:00PM

ImageWhile we wait for Sega's "Monster World Collection" to debut the previously Japan-only (and acclaimed!) Monster World IV on PSN and XBLA, Sega went ahead and deposited the game on Wii Virtual Console today, causing even more surprise than other, increasingly rare, VC releases.

If you have the Wii Points kicking around, you can build a pseudo-complete Wonder Boy collection now – bolstered by Sega's simultaneous release of the arcade version of Wonder Boy in Monster Land. At least one version of each game in the series is available.

In non-interactive news, Dinosaur Office returns to Nintendo Video tomorrow.

Wii Virtual Console Wonder Boy in Monster Land (Arcade, 1 player, 900 Wii Points): Wonder Boy's side-scrolling arcade adventure to defeat the MEKA Dragon.Monster World IV (Mega Drive, 1 player, 900 Wii Points): Never before released in North America, this Wonder Boy spinoff stars a girl named Asha, who explores Monster Land with her pals, a genie and a spheroid monster named Pepe.3DS eShop DSiWare Paul's Shooting Adventure 2 (Agetec, 1-2 players, $1.99/200 DSi Points): Paul and his twin brother are flying superhero babies who shoot giant bugs.

[PC, PS3, X360] Mass Effect 3 Marketing Stunt is Out of this World

[PC, PS3, X360] Mass Effect 3 Marketing Stunt is Out of this World
[Image: game-news-image-2012-06b3869ff1f5e08805f...1e42a1.jpg]
The excruciating wait for one of the biggest games of the year will continue for another three weeks for most of us, but a very lucky few will be able to get their hands on the full version of Mass Effect 3 before then thanks to a unique marketing ploy by Electronic Arts. Next week, the publisher will literally be launching copies of the game into space using weather balloons that will be released from New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Berlin, London, and Paris. Each copy of the game has a GPS tracking device attached to it that people can track on masseffect.com to find where the games will land on their return to Earth.

Finders become keepers and will get to enjoy the game in its entirety well in advance of the game's March 6 release date. Until then you'll have to get your ME3 fix with the recently-released demo available for download on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and PC.

Assemble a world with Dragon Quest 25th anniversary diorama

by on Dec 27th 2011 11:46AM

Need a way to express devotion and desire for the Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Famicom & Super Famicom Dragon Quest I, II, III collection ... beyond importing the game? There's always a cool diorama of Alefgard split into several pieces and featuring figures of monsters from the game. There's only one catch.

The Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Map Diorama Collection requires buying a "blind box" with nine different boxes inside at ¥4,620 ($60). That means you could conceivably spend significantly more than intended to complete the set.

On the bright side, the item isn't available until March, 2012. By the time June rolls around, it should be possible to find completed maps from bankrupted importers on eBay for cheap.
