[X1] Forza 5 will require a one time internet connection at launch

[X1] Forza 5 will require a one time internet connection at launch

Forza 5 is basically selling itself with the intriguing new Drivatar approach to AI, wherein the game features no pre-programmed AI and instead a ghost version of you will race on your behalf, making use of their repeated behavior to mimic how you'd race if you were actually in control. The Drivatars of random racers from around the world will be what you find yourself racing against in the single-player campaign.

It is certainly an ambitious idea and it will lean heavily on the use of the Xbox One's cloud and online features. As a result it has been confirmed in an interview with IGN that Forza 5 will require a one time internet connection.

"So when you first boot up the game, we're going to ask you to log in," explained Dan Greenawalt, studio head at Turn 10 Studios. "And when you log in you're going to get the Drivatars and you're also going to get a whole bunch of content: tracks and cars. Our production schedule is such that we are putting them in as late as possible and that means making them free as downloadable content on Day One."

It seems that Turn 10 will be cramming as much content into this game as possible, so I'm happy to hear the extra content will be made available as a day one download. However, I'll be interested to see what content is actually included on the disc. When you pick up the disc from the store it will only contain a portion of the game, the rest will download when you start it up. Thankfully the recently confirmed feature that allows gamers to play while they download should come in handy here.

Greenawalt comapres Forza 5 to a fridge, claiming that you'll have to "fill it up with food the first time" but afterwards you'll only have to connect when you feel like updating your "fridge". Of course, he warns that your Drivatars will also only update when you connect to the internet, so if you want fresh challenges then you'll need to keep your connection status pretty steady.

"We're not making a launch game. We're making Forza 5, at launch," said Greenawalt.

I am actually okay with this, but that is partially because the Drivatar concept intrigues me. If it is a success I look forward to seeing it implemented somewhat in other racing franchises.

Are you disappointed to hear this? Or will your internet connection prevent this from being an issue?

[Vita] Nine minutes of Little King's Story marches onto the internet

[Vita] Nine minutes of Little King's Story marches onto the internet
Konami's bringing New Little King's Story to the PlayStation Vita, if you didn't know this... then surprise!! As a further surprise, nine minutes of footage has been uploaded onto YouTube thanks to 4Gamer, if you are interested then you can check it out below.
It is looking pretty good, even if I can't understand a word that is being said. I never got a chance to try out Little King's Story but I heard it was a very solid game, perhaps the PlayStation Vita will increase that reputation even more?

[PC, PS3, X360] Opening movie for Street Fighter x Tekken kicks out onto the internet
With its release quickly approaching (March 6th), the opening movie for Street Fighter x Tekken has exploded onto the internet to build some more anticipation.
Let's be honest though, same day as Mass Effect 3? We know what will be getting all of the attention that day.

Nintendo, EA, Sony sponsor Internet censorship bill [update]

by on Nov 18th 2011 11:49AM

SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is a bill currently in the US Congress, with the stated goal of curtailing copyright infringement, but with the actual effects of setting up a government firewall to block out unwanted sites, and giving the US jurisdiction over foreign sites that have anything to do with infringement of US copyright.

It is repellent.

A Reddit user discovered a document [PDF] hosted by the Global Intellectual IP Center ("Global"), from before the introduction of SOPA, urging Congress to enact such a measure. Among those corporate sponsors is Nintendo, who is demonstrably and justifiably upset about piracy, and committed to taking all the wrong steps to stop it.

Other companies signing off in favor of this anti-"rogue site" legislation, in the interest of protecting their IP online include Sony -- Sony Electronics, Sony Music, and Sony Pictures, separately. EA is also listed, along with Rite Aid (what?) and Zippo (what?)

Okay, so you already know how we feel about this thing. If you feel the same way, you can write or call Congress. November 16 saw concerted "Stop Censorship" efforts (Tumblr black-barred everyone's dashboard in protest, for example), but you can, of course, still contact your representatives. If you're outside of the US, uh, cross your fingers and hope you don't lose all the US-based visitors to your sites.

Update: Added link to Reddit post. It was accidentally censored omitted!

Update 2: It appears as though Apple, Microsoft, and a variety of other tech companies are supporting the bill as well via a lobby group, named "The Business Software Alliance."

Dragon Quest X has usage fees, requires Internet connection; does not require an NES

by on Sep 6th 2011 11:15AM

Yesterday, Square Enix provided early indication that there would be a periodic fee for online play of Dragon Quest X. A FAQ on Square Enix's website confirms it. As translated by Google, "Yes, if you connect to online play will be required to pay the additional fee." The FAQ also noted that players will be required to connect to the Internet to play after the first few hours of the game.

In much less true news, parody site the Kyoko Shimbun (a site whose name literally translates to "fictitious newspaper") reports that Square Enix is also making a Famicom/NES version of Dragon Quest X, and even provided mock screenshots. This version, according to the fabricated story, is aimed at those who played Dragon Quest games on Famicom and have a nostalgic desire to experience the same thing again.

PEGI spanks Ubisoft, demands it pull We Dare ads from internet

by on Mar 10th 2011 10:00PM

Ubisoft no doubt intended for its kinky We Dare ad campaign to turn some heads and, in one way or another, it has definitely succeeded. Despite the fact that that the game will now sport a parental warning sticker and will not be released in the UK or US, European ratings board PEGI is now asking Ubisoft to remove We Dare ads from the internet entirely.

Gamasutra reports that PEGI's imposing-sounding "Enforcement Committee" has demanded that Ubisoft pull the ads from the internet within three working days or risk a fine. According to PEGI, the ads do not "accurately reflect the nature and content of the product and it misleads consumers as to its true nature."

Alas, whether Ubisoft pulls the ads or not, the damage is done. You can't stop the signal, PEGI. It's basic science.
