There's even a Wii Virtual Console game, which makes this a historic week: for the first time, downloadable games have been released on four Nintendo consoles in the same week.

There's also a Skrillex video on Nintendo Video this week. So there's that.

A demo on the Wii U eShop today will allow you to get your first taste of our #10 game of 2012, ZombiU. Perhaps that's not the best phrasing for a zombie game, but nonetheless. An NBA 2K13 demo will also be available.

Meanwhile on 3DS, there's fishing, hunting, DinoPet...ting, and Hello Kitty Picnic with Sanrio Friends, a minigame collection with unlockable "supercute outfits for Hello Kitty."

by Writer RSS on Aug 23rd 2012 5:30PM

Nintendoware Weekly Metal Slug X, VectorRacingIt's a quiet week on Nintendo platforms (except, of course, for last Sunday's New Super Mario Bros. 2 launch), with just one new game per platform.

Wii Virtual Console fans can rescue hostages and blow up everything that isn't a hostage in Metal Slug X; 3DS owners get to see through the track in VectorRacing; and DSiWare has a sort of submarine exploration game called Abyss.

NintendoWare Weekly: Prince of Persia

by Writer RSS on Sep 6th 2012 6:30PM

NintendoWare Weekly Prince of PersiaThe SNES version of Prince of Persia arrives on the Virtual Console in North America. We'd forgotten this was happening in the interim between the December ESRB rating and today, so this is, like every Wii Virtual Console release, a pleasant and unexpected surprise.

Speaking of surprises, DSiWare's Crazy Hunter is about a crocodile building a goat tower to reach the sky, in order to capture hens who lay golden eggs. It gets weirder from there, actually.

Wii Prince of Persia (SNES, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): Before all the time travel stuff, it was just a simple story of a man running and climbing through a prison, fighting skeleton men and drinking potions he finds inside the ceiling. 3DS eShop Balloon Pop Remix (UFO Interactive, 1 player, $7.99): Draw lines to pop balloons and create chain reactions.Heyawake by Nikoli (Hamster Corporation, 1-4 players, $7.99): Number puzzles in which the numbers are divided into "rooms."DSiWare Crazy Hunter (EnjoyUp, 1 player, $4.99/500 DSi Points): This is a game in which you drive a boat to knock goats off of platforms, fish them out of the river, and then stack them to make a tower. NintendoWare Weekly: Bomb Monkey, Marvel Pinball, VVVVVV sale

by Writer RSS on Jun 28th 2012 3:00PM

NintendoWare Weekly Bomb Monkey, Marvel Pinball, VVVVVV saleThis is not just a great week for the 3DS eShop, but it's an important one. Last weekend, Nintendo discounted Super Mario Land temporarily; this weekend's sale on VVVVVV proves that these limited-time discounts are an actual thing. For a digital Nintendo platform, two sales is a giant leap forward.

That discount is joined by a demo for Rhythm Thief, which appears to actually be coming out, and interesting new eShop games Bomb Monkey and Marvel Pinball 3D.

It's not so great for the Wii this week, with absolutely no releases of any kind on the Wii Shop, but it can't all be good news.

3DS eShop Marvel Pinball 3D (Zen Studios, 1-4 players, $7.99): Four superhero-themed pinball tables.Bomb Monkey (Renegade Kid, 1-2 players, $4.99): Set off bombs to cause chain-reaction explosions of same-color blocks in this falling block puzzler.Demo: Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Treasure (Sega, 1-2 players, free): A dashing thief solves mysteries in Paris, in a series of musical minigames."Game of the Weekend" sale: VVVVVV for $4.99, Valid from 12PM EST Friday through 12AM EST MondayDSiWare Flip the Core (Engine Software, 1 player, $1.99/200 DSi Points): A side scrolling shooter in which you can freely rotate the screen on a horizontal axis.Escape the Virus: Swarm Survival (Teyon, 1 player, $1.99/200 DSi Points): It appears to be a DSiWare version of Peakvox Viral Survival, under a different title, from a different publisher.

by Writer RSS on Jul 12th 2012 12:45PM

NintendoWare Weekly Kirby's Pinball Land, Ace Mathician, Mighty Switch Force saleWe could get used to this – there's a lot to download on Nintendo platforms this week! The "8-Bit Summer" brings two 3DS Game Boy games, one you likely know and one you probably don't. You'll also find some new games, Johnny Kung Fu and Sweet Memories - Blackjack. The latter is, for real, about connecting with a high school sweetheart over blackjack games.

Mighty Switch Force is cheap this weekend, while DSiWare offers the fascinating-looking math-platformer Ace Mathician, by Flipper creator Goodbye Galaxy Games.

Wii The King of Fighters '96 (Neo Geo, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points): This one wasn't on Virtual Console yet? NintendoWare Weekly: Double Dragon 2, Order Up

by Writer RSS on Jun 21st 2012 12:00PM

NintendoWare Weekly Double Dragon 2, Order UpThe NES classic Double Dragon 2 unexpectedly shows up on Wii today, in an otherwise portable-heavy week. Today's 3DS releases include the popular Order Up!!, and a series of "Slitherlink" math puzzles.

Normally, we don't give too much attention to the kids' stuff on DSiWare, but we feel compelled to share this. There is a game called Lola's Fruit Shop Sudoku, and it is a sudoku game designed for four-year-olds. You line up pictures of fruit instead of numbers. This is incredible.

WiiWare Save the Furries (SDP Games, 1 player, 1000 Wii Points): You're saving actual little fuzzy creatures by moving objects to create safe paths. Not people dressed as fuzzy creatures.Wii Virtual Console Double Dragon 2 (Aksys Games, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Billy and Jimmy Lee fight to defeat the Shadow Warriors, mostly through repeated use of that one knee kick.3DS eShop Order Up!! (SuperVillain Studios, 1 player, $9.99): Originally designed as a retail cart, the 3DS version of the cooking/restaurant management game comes to eShop.Slitherlink by Nikoli (Hamster Corporation, 1-4 players, $4.99) Draw lines to make a picture, based on numbers on the screen. It's kind of sudoku, kind of picross, and I kind of don't know what's going on.DSiWare Jewel Legends - Tree of Life (cerasus.media, 1 player, $4.99/500 DSi Points): Match three to rebuild the world of the "Hods." Won't someone think of the hods? Lola's Fruit Shop Sudoku (BeiZ, 1 player, $1.99/200 DSi Points): A cute sudoku game for kids. " "Lola's Fruit Shop Sudoku game is playable even by 4-year old children, yet still challenging enough for 8-9-year-old kids. How is that possible?"

NintendoWare Weekly: Monster World IV

by Writer RSS on May 10th 2012 3:00PM

ImageWhile we wait for Sega's "Monster World Collection" to debut the previously Japan-only (and acclaimed!) Monster World IV on PSN and XBLA, Sega went ahead and deposited the game on Wii Virtual Console today, causing even more surprise than other, increasingly rare, VC releases.

If you have the Wii Points kicking around, you can build a pseudo-complete Wonder Boy collection now – bolstered by Sega's simultaneous release of the arcade version of Wonder Boy in Monster Land. At least one version of each game in the series is available.

In non-interactive news, Dinosaur Office returns to Nintendo Video tomorrow.

Wii Virtual Console Wonder Boy in Monster Land (Arcade, 1 player, 900 Wii Points): Wonder Boy's side-scrolling arcade adventure to defeat the MEKA Dragon.Monster World IV (Mega Drive, 1 player, 900 Wii Points): Never before released in North America, this Wonder Boy spinoff stars a girl named Asha, who explores Monster Land with her pals, a genie and a spheroid monster named Pepe.3DS eShop DSiWare Paul's Shooting Adventure 2 (Agetec, 1-2 players, $1.99/200 DSi Points): Paul and his twin brother are flying superhero babies who shoot giant bugs.

NintendoWare Weekly: An actual Virtual Console game

by Writer RSS on Apr 26th 2012 4:00PM

ImageAfter two weeks of absolutely nothing in new Wii downloads, Nintendo dropped a new Virtual Console game on us. And not just any new Virtual Console game, Super Street Fighter II ... with online play. Even after being released in Japan last November, and being announced locally by Capcom the same month, it's still surprising to see extra functionality.

It's still surprising to see a Wii Virtual Console game.

Wii Virtual Console

3DS eShop Block Factory (Enjoy Gaming, 1 player, $3.99): A color-matching puzzle game with Tetris-like blocks.DSiWare Chuck E. Cheese's Arcade Room (UFO Interactive Games, 1 player, $4.99/500 DSi Points): Play pretend arcade whack-a-mole and basketball, win pretend tickets, and redeem them for pretend toys. NintendoWare Weekly: Colors! 3D

by on Apr 5th 2012 11:59PM

ImageColors! 3D is the heartwarming story of how an unofficial, homebrew DS app "graduated" into a for-real downloadable 3DS eShop game. It's also an app that allows you to draw and paint on your 3DS, and share your drawings online with the Colors! 3D gallery.

Other new content on 3DS this week includes a video interview with Warren Spector about the two new Epic Mickey games, and "The Rifle's Spiral" by The Shins (available tomorrow).

WiiWare TNT Racers (dtp entertainment, 1-4 players, 1000 Wii Points): TNT stands for Tracks N Tricks, Nintendo explains. So look out for both of those.3DS eShop Colors! 3D (Collecting Smiles, 1-2 players, $6.99): Draw, paint, and share your art online.DSiWare Penguin Patrol (Grab, 1 player, $1.99/200 DSi Points): Help guide penguins out of grid-based puzzles, in which the ice cracks behind them as they move.

Nintendo's actually doing a pretty good job with these 3DS demos! Today on the eShop, you'll be able to get a sample of the upcoming puzzle adventure Crush3D. You know, in case our preview wasn't quite vividly descriptive enough to paint an accurate picture in your brain.

If you missed the Ambassador Program, you can now buy the NES classic Metroid on 3DS as well.

NintendoWare Weekly: Nintendogs + Cats demo, 2 Fast 4 Gnomz

by on Feb 23rd 2012 1:20PM

If we were to design a Nintendogs + Cats demo, it would go something like this: you walk into a virtual pet store to meet a new puppy, wearing an adorable bow. The proprietor lets the pup out of its cage to play with you, and the dog can't hide its excitement to run and play with all the toys in the room. It barks happily and licks the screen to simulate licking your face.

Its barks sound just enough like your name, but just different enough, that you question what you heard.

Then, after you choose to exit the demo, the virtual puppy goes back into its cage, whimpering. The last thing you see before you close the 3DS lid is your puppy's paw up against the screen. Occasionally you'll receive a note via SpotPass telling you that the little scamp still looks out the window whenever a car the same model as yours drives by.

We didn't design the real demo.

WiiWare 2 Fast 4 Gnomz (QubicGames, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): It's an auto-running platformer, starring gnomes gnomz.3DS eShop DSiWare Box Pusher (cosmigo, 1-2 players, $4.99/500 DSi Points): Box-pushing/sokoban puzzles with a fairly nice polygonal presentation.

NintendoWare Weekly: Metal Gear Solid 3D demo, Strider

by on Feb 16th 2012 12:30PM

The Metal Gear Solid 3D demo arrives today, accompanied by relatively big news on the Virtual Console! The first NES Ambassador game for 3DS is now available for purchase by non-Ambassadors! Super Mario Bros. is on the eShop now for five bucks. And if you already have it through the Ambassador Program, you can get a free update to add multiplayer and save states!

There's also news for the Wii's Virtual Console: the Genesis version of Strider can be purchased today. We hadn't heard about a Genesis VC game in a while, so we looked into it. As far as we can tell, this is the first Genesis game on Wii in North America since Sonic & Knuckles, on February 15, 2010. It's been two years and a day since the last Genesis VC release.

In fact, this appears to be the first Wii Virtual Console release of any kind since The Ignition Factor six months ago. Enjoy it! This doesn't happen very often.

Wii Virtual Console Strider (Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): Pseudo-Soviet settings, giant robot gorillas, and weird arcing sword effects. A true classic.3DS eShop DSiWare iSpot Japan (EnjoyUp Games, 1-2 players, $1.99/200 DSi Points): Spot the difference between two images of Japanese locales.

NintendoWare Weekly: Mutant Mudds, Mario & Sonic, Flush the Goldfish

by on Jan 26th 2012 12:30PM

As promised, another 3DS demo is available on the eShop, this time for Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. It may not have zombies, but then, it may have Waluigi. Renegade Kid's Mutant Mudds, its first self-published project, is also up on the eShop this week, offering challenging platforming and shooting and some dramatic 3D effects.

DSiWare features a sequel to the indie game Flipper; though if you played it, you still won't recognize Flipper 2: Flush the Goldfish. The original was an isometric puzzle game about reshaping environments ... and the sequel is a side-scrolling action game that uses one contextual button!

WiiWare Newton Vs The Horde (RadiationBurn Ltd., 1 player, 500 Wii Points): Build traps to "splat" monsters in this physics simulation puzzle.3DS eShop DSiWare Lola's Alphabet Train (BeiZ, 1 player, $1.99/200 DSi Points): Learn to spell simple words with an adorable panda!
