Rumor: Disney shutters Epic Mickey developer Junction Point

by Alexander Sliwinski Writer RSS on Jan 28th 2013 5:14PM

Warren Spector's Junction Point studio has reportedly been shut down by Disney. The word comes from Austin-neighbor Roberts Space Industries, who tweeted, "Second 21 gun salute for a studio in 7 days. Fare-the-well Junction Point! We hope that you all find new studios soon!"

We've reached out to Disney for an official statement.

Industry veteran George Broussard notes, "The Junction Point rumors have been circulating a while. Warning signs when you give employees 2 months off after shipping."

Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two was not a critical nor financial win for Disney, reportedly selling 270,000 copies in North America by the end of 2012.

Update: Roberts Space Industries has deleted its previous tweet stating it has "no insider info" on Junction Point's status. Oddly, the site it sources as having provided the info links back to the exact same tweet from RSI regarding the shut down. Disney corporate communications has still not responded to numerous requests for comment.

Update 2: Disney confirms closure.

Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two life-to-date sales 529K in US

by Alexander Sliwinski Writer RSS on Jan 29th 2013 4:30PM

Disney's multiplatform Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two sold 529,000 units over November and December of 2012 in the United States, according to new data provided by the NPD group. Joystiq was also informed that sales of Epic Mickey 2, plus Nintendo 3DS title Disney Epic Mickey: The Power of Illusion, across North America reached 695,000 units over the same period. An unconfirmed report previously pegged Epic Mickey 2's sales at 270,000 copies.

Disney Epic Mickey developer Junction Point Studios was closed today, with the House of Mouse noting it was due to an ongoing effort to address fast-evolving gaming platforms and the marketplace.

Junction Point was the last studio standing of Disney's previous attempt to break into the triple-A "core" market, with many studios lost along the way, including the critically acclaimed Pure and Split/Second developer Black Rock Studios. Disney has readjusted its sights and is now developing Disney Infinity.

Epic Mickey 2 also coming to PC and Mac on Nov. 18

by Writer RSS on Jul 13th 2012 6:25PM

The plan is for Disney's Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two to launch on Xbox 360, PS3 with Move, Wii, PC and Mac on November 18, Junction Point founder Warren Spector said today at San Diego Comic-Con. The launch date was previously confirmed for consoles alone, including the 3DS tie-in title, Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Illusion, which is also slated to drop on November 18.

The Power of Illusion will pay homage to forgotten and rejected gaming features, drawing inspiration from 16-bit graphics and the 1990 Sega game, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse.

Spector said it was "totally dumb" that he had none of the characters speak in the first Epic Mickey, and he's rectifying that by having characters not only talk, but sing in Epic Mickey 2. Actor Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride, Robin Hood: Men in Tights) voices Gus, while Frank Welker (Nibbler in Futurama, at least one character in every cartoon you ever loved) plays Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

Epic Mickey 2 is mature on a level comparable to one of Spector's earlier titles, Deus Ex, backed up by the fact that 54 percent of Epic Mickey players were 18 or older, he said.

A second iteration of the Epic Mickey digital graphic novel series, penned by comic veteran Peter David (The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man 2099), is due out this fall.

Look at these adorable Epic Mickey 2 Wii controller prototypes

by on Mar 23rd 2012 1:00PM

You may not get HD graphics if you stick with the Wii for Epic Mickey 2, but you will have the opportunity to experience a more tactile verisimilitude. During a preview event for the sequel, Junction Point showed off prototypes for two new Nunchuk controllers based on in-game items.

The first is an updated version of PDP's "Paintbrush Chuk" accessory, designed to mimic Mickey's paintbrush. The new version has the Epic Mickey 2 logo and a glowing blue paint blob at the end of the brush. The second, and inexplicably more desirable of the two, is a Nunchuk based on Oswald's remote device, silver and boxy. It's like a literal "Wii Remote" (except, of course, it's a Nunchuk attached to an existing Wii Remote).

Being that these were both prototypes, and the game hadn't even technically been officially announced yet, there weren't any details to be had about pricing or availability. We'll keep you updated, because these silly controllers are fun.

[PS3, Wii, X360] Epic Mickey is getting a sequel titled 'Power of Two'

[PS3, Wii, X360] Epic Mickey is getting a sequel titled 'Power of Two'
[Image: game-news-image-2012-a09444d65b4acd90f89...3a8262.jpg]
Rumours had been swirling for awhile that we'd be hearing news on a potential Epic Mickey sequel, well now we know that it is fact. You can check the full report over at AP for a whole stack of quotes.

Here's a brief rundown though, the game will be coming to Nintendo's Wii, Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360. It will also feature drop-in / drop-out co-op featuring Mickey Mouse & Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, they'll be fixing the game's camera issues that were a pretty big talking point in the original game, and will even feature full voice acting this time around.

That's not all though, Warren Spector also has mentioned that musicals will be playing a part (it is part of the reason that voice acting was a necessity). "I'm such a geek about musicals. I love the co-op and next-gen stuff, but for me, when a character breaks into song, which they do on a regular basis in this game, it's magic." It will also mark the first time in history that Oswald has been voiced, so that's a fair amount of pressure to be under.

Stay tuned for more details on Disney's Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two.

'Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two' coming to Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360

by on Mar 21st 2012 12:00PM

Yes, there's a sequel to Disney Epic Mickey. A tweet from Geoff Keighley first confirmed the title (of a game his show will reveal on TV as a "world premiere") as Disney Epic Mickey (2): The Power of Two. Then a piece from the AP went ahead and confirmed everything else.

It's coming out for Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360, and features drop-in, drop-out co-op play with Mickey Mouse and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Oswald is AI-controlled when another person is not around, and can be controlled at any time by a second player, who then wields Oswald's "remote" ability to control electricity.

Other new developments for this now-official game include full voice acting, including the first voice work for Oswald in Disney history. That voice acting will be used to make the game a for-real musical. "I'm such a geek about musicals," Junction Point studio head Warren Spector told the AP. "I love the co-op and next-gen stuff, but for me, when a character breaks into song, which they do on a regular basis in this game, it's magic."

Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion confirmed for 3DS

While many speculated if Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion would come to the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Power magazine has confirmed. While not too many details are known, the cover of the magazine definitely confirms that the game will exist.

Update: As it turns out, this will be a sequel to the 1990 Sega Genesis game, Castle of Illusion.” It will be a side-scroller but still keep the painting mechanic, incorporating the stylus.

Rumor: Epic Mickey 2 appearing in online surveys

by on Aug 28th 2011 1:30PM

Epic Mickey 2 is running the rounds of Disney online-marketing tests, complete with box-art and title variations, according to an anonymous source at Destructoid. Disney is apparently getting a feel for the Epic Mickey 2 audience, asking which of the above box arts is most pleasing and which of the following titles most inspires test-takers to open their wallets: Epic Mickey 2: Return of the Mad Doctor, Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, Epic Mickey 2: Mystery on Mean Street or simply Epic Mickey 2.

The prototype game Disney is marketing features two-player split screen with Mickey and Disney's first cartoon star, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, who uses his ears to fly like a helicopter. Mickey and Oswald are thrown back into the annals of Disney classicism, armed with paint and thinner, just as in the previous title. We can't help but imagine what the box art would be if Don Draper was working on this project -- Mickey painting the town with a bottle of whiskey, Minnie in a bikini on one arm and a new title, Simply Mickey.
