Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, FIFA 12 top UK sales in 2011

UKIE reveals best-selling video games of 2011

11th January, 2011 - London, United Kingdom – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 ends year as best selling video game of 2011.

Last year, 2011, turned into another blockbuster 12 months for Activision as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 ended the year as the best-selling video game topping the coveted 2011 All Formats Chart, according to data released today by UKIE (compiled by GfK Chart-Track). This makes 3 years in a row for Activision as the publisher also made No1 in 2010 with Call of Duty: Black Ops and in 2009 with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has continued to set new records since its release in November last year, grossing a record-breaking £83 million in its first week of sales, which was also the biggest grossing week of all time for video games software at £121m.

EA also had a strong year with the No2 and No3 games FIFA 12 and Battlefield 3. FIFA 12, the latest version of EA's football game kick-started the market at the end of September last year, selling around 1m units in the UK in just 2 days. Meanwhile, Battlefield 3 became the most successful alternative to Activision's Call of Duty series and remains within the Top 10 of the most successful week 1 launch titles in the UK.

At No4 is 505 Games' Zumba Fitness, mostly thanks to the release in 2011 of the Wii version - overall sales on Wii, 360, PS3 meant that the title topped the All Formats Chart 13 times in 2011, but on the Wii chart, the title ruled for record-breaking 28 consecutive weeks in 2011.

Bethesda's critically acclaimed The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim takes No5 and is the publisher's most successful title ever and a first Top 10 All Formats placing over a year, even taking No3 on the Xbox 360 and PC Games individual format charts.

Ubisoft's strong performance in 2011 is highlighted at No6 and No7 with Just Dance 3 and Assassin's Creed: Revelations.

Completing the Top 10 is Take 2 at No8 with L.A. Noire, THQ at No9 with Saints Row: The Third and Warner at No10 with Batman: Arkham City.

New for 2011 was the Nintendo 3DS, gaining a separate chart from DS and topped by Nintendo's most popular franchise, Super Mario 3D Land.

On DS the latest Professor Layton And The Spectre's Call carries on a 3 year tradition of being the No1 DS game (2010 was Professor Layton And The Lost Future, 2009 was Professor Layton And The Curious Village).

UKIE CEO, Jo Twist said, "In a year when overall consumer spending was down, the launch of so many high-quality titles showed that there was still strength in the UK's boxed-product games market. However, whilst the boxed product market still remains a key revenue stream, digital is where much future growth lies and it is therefore vital that we understand the size of this market. UKIE's Digital Charts, launching this year, will be a step towards measuring digital revenues. I'd urge all games developers and publishers who want to get involved in creating these charts to join UKIE's digital group."
Dorian Bloch, Business Group Director at GfK Chart-Track said, "2011 finished strongly for the traditional console gaming markets thanks to the arrival of 3DS to re-invigorate the hand-held gaming arena and also the notable UK phenomenon of Xbox 360, which sold more software both in units and revenue than any year since its launch back in 2005. Most of the All Formats Top 10 best-sellers of 2011 were released in Q4 which meant that for the first time over half of the entire year's software revenue occurred in just the last quarter of the year".

Skyrim flies past Modern Warfare 3 on UK charts

by on Dec 12th 2011 11:26AM

It took some time for the Dovahkiin to level up, but Skyrim has slain a fearsome beast and taken the top spot of Chart-Track's UK sales chart. Five weeks after its debut, Skyrim has grabbed first place from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, thanks to the game's continued buzz and an average price reduction of £13 last week.

But an evil still lingers, growing in strength. Just Dance 3, the latest lieutenant in the army of dance darkness, has entered third place. The launch of the PS3 version of Just Dance 3 helped the game on the all formats chart, but the Wii edition still makes up 89 percent of sales.

The rest of the UK top ten is playing musical chairs -- check those out after the break.

Activision trumpets $1 billion for Modern Warfare 3

by on Dec 12th 2011 10:58AM

As Bobby Kotick nestles himself between a cloud masquerading as a mattress and a gold-trimmed white goose down duvet (the goose has the gold trim, not the duvet), his mind can gently waft into unconsciousness, accompanied by the pleasing crackle of bloggers typing "one billion dollars." Activision announced the enormous sales figure for Modern Warfare 3 this morning, claiming the milestone flew by within 16 days of the game's launch. We hope George Michael was adequately rewarded for providing his flattest cover yet.

The information is derived from retailer sell-through data and the UK's Chart-Track service, and is positioned in comparison to entertainment nemesis Hollywood, where 2009's Avatar took longer to reach the same sales (19 in total if you ask Wikipedia). James Cameron's 3D spectacle rested on an awful lot of noses and eventually reached $2 billion worldwide.

Alas, that's an indication of Modern Warfare 3's diminishing returns in the news sphere. Next year, we want to see two billion bucks before we commit a sentence.

Modern Warfare 3 and the rest of the CoD family on sale today at Amazon

by on Dec 12th 2011 4:00PM

Many, many people have already picked up copies of this year's Call of Duty entry, Modern Warfare 3. This we know. But what about those of you hoping against logic that the game -- one of the fastest selling media properties of all time -- would drop its price relatively close to launch? Bizarrely, your time has come, with Amazon offering Modern Warfare 3 for $50 (10 percent off) across Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, today only.

In fact, the entire stable of Call of Duty titles are on sale (not to mention various DS and Wii iterations) going all the way back to Modern Warfare 1. Amazon promises a day of Assassin's Creed savings tomorrow, so perhaps holding off on a purchase of Revelations this afternoon would be a smart move.

CoD: Modern Warfare 3 not moving, Mario Kart 7 debuts strong on UK chart

by on Dec 5th 2011 8:30AM

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, with a slight sales gain of 2 percent, remains king of the hill for a fourth week in a row on Chart-Track's UK sales chart. Stalwart chart champion FIFA 12 pushed past Assassin's Creed: Revelations into second, but remained 55,000 units behind Modern Warfare 3.

The big mover and shaker last week was Just Dance 3, up 54 percent, electric-sliding from eighth into fourth. Skyrim and Saints Row: The Third couldn't help but shout and inspire mayhem regarding this situation while sitting in fifth and sixth place, respectively. Mario Kart 7 was the only top 40 debut on the charts last week, driving up to an eighth place finish.

Mamma mia! Here we go again. There were two titles that entered the top 40 in their second week. ABBA: You Can Dance (part of the Just Dance franchise) saw a 252 percent jump in sales into 30th place. Zumba Fitness 2, the sister succubi of a formerly unstoppable chart demon, is up 97 percent and creeps into the 34th spot. Check out the UK top ten after the break.

[Multi] Shocking Modern Warfare 3 Launch Trailer has Guns, Explosions
Okay maybe that isn't so shocking but Infinity Ward doesn't have much left to shock us with these days outside of the ridiculous sales numbers that are sure to follow Modern Warfare 3's November 8 launch. In the meantime, take some time to enjoy this undeniably impressive launch trailer. Modern Warfare 3 will be available on PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and Nintendo DS.

Modern Warfare 3 maintains top of UK charts for third week

by on Nov 28th 2011 9:27AM

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 isn't going anywhere on the UK charts, as the biggest entertainment launch in history holds its position at the top, despite a 41 percent drop in sales. MW3 had an 87 percent drop in sales last week, so the über-blockbuster clearly has a sales cushion to play around.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations maintained second, with Saints Row: The Third and Skyrim swapping spots at third and fourth, respectively. FIFA 12 also held strong in fifth as WWE '12 muscled in with a debut at sixth.

Some good news for Nintendo, as Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call premiered in seventh and Super Mario 3D Land slipped one little spot to tenth. The bad news? The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, the first major Zelda console release in five years, dropped from its debut in seventh to 19. The UK top ten can be found after the break.

After almost a full year of trailers, conventions, in-fighting and speculation, we don't think you're fully prepared for the game to launch on Tuesday. We think you need one more video, this time in live action and featuring Jonah Hill, Sam Worthington and Dwight Howard.

Are you ready now?

Report: French delivery truck hijacked, 6,000 copies of Modern Warfare 3 stolen

by on Nov 6th 2011 9:30PM

A delivery truck in Créteil, France carrying 6,000 copies of Modern Warfare 3 was hijacked and stolen on Saturday by two masked people, French news outlets TFI and Ultimate PS3 reported. The truck crashed with a car, and when the truck's drivers exited, two people in masks tear-gassed them before taking off with the games, TFI said. The shipment was reported to be worth 400,000 euros ($551,000).

If you're in the Créteil area and happen to see two people in a delivery truck grinning like maniacs and most likely high-fiving a lot, you may want to contact the authorities. And everyone -- let's settle down. Modern Warfare 3 comes out on Tuesday. It's not worth jail time to play this one a few hours early.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Key Art Video Game Poster Print

It's a tale as old as time. Boy grows up, completely enamored with a computer-generated Italian plumber. He pumps his college fund, in quarter form, into Donkey Kong. Later, he grows inch-thick calluses on his thumbs playing Super Mario Brothers on the original NES. He suffered through Super Mario Sunshine, and has the entire season of Super Mario Adventures, staring Captain Lou Albano as Mario, on DVD. Finally, he marries a nice girl named Pauline, and has three kids: Shigeru, Luigi, and Diddy. Poor Diddy.

What he doesn't have, though, are these awesome vinyl restickable wall-stickers. Featuring Mario and his friends and enemies through his evolution from 15 pixel high sprite to fully 3d-rendered hyperbeing. Do a faithful recreation of your favorite levels, or create your own, using your own space as a template.

Now all you need are mushrooms that make you into a giant, and flowers that let you throw fireballs.

[PC] Modern Warfare 3 coming to PC with Steamworks

[PC] Modern Warfare 3 coming to PC with Steamworks
[Image: game-news-image-2011-ba0ffb925d9bba7edb3...b85e03.png]Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is fast approaching, and while Battlefield 3 hangs out over at Origin the former is now confirmed to be employing Valve's Steamworks.

In case you aren't aware of the benefits that Steamworks brings the ease of integrating the Steam client into the game in the form of an overlay. Through the overlay you can access your friends list, a web browser, chat features and allows the game to make use of Valve's anti-cheat software. These are a few of the benefits that come from Steamworks.

This comes on top of confirmation that the game will also include support for dedicated servers (something that Modern Warfare 2 decided to neglect).

Modern Warfare 3 launches on the 8th of November on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as well as a release on the way for Nintendo Wii.

[Wii] Modern Warfare 3 Confirmed for Wii

[Wii] Modern Warfare 3 Confirmed for Wii
[Image: game-news-image-2011-be3daddc12d654861f7...0dc9df.jpg]
Wii owners haven't been able to join in on the Call of Duty craze as consistently as their Xbox 360 and PS3 brethren the past few years. While last year's Black Ops, 2008's World at War, and Call of Duty 3 in 2006 were all represented on the Wii, both Modern Warfare in 2007 and 2009's Modern Warfare 2 skipped Nintendo's console (although the first MW eventually showed up on the Wii two years later).

Wii owners can rest easy this year though, as Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg announced during an investor call today that Modern Warfare 3 will be coming to the Wii. "We're pleased to have recently confirmed that we will release a Modern Warfare 3 Wii SKU this year, so as not to leave any of the community out of the excitement," said Hirshberg.

The four Call of Duty titles to land on the Wii have collectively sold over 6.2 million copies, the most of which surprisingly came from Call of Duty 3, which sold 2.1 million copies. Modern Warfare 3 is slated for release on November 8.

Modern Warfare 3 will also blow up the world on Wii

by on Aug 3rd 2011 5:27PM

Activision's been hesitant to talk about whether its upcoming soon-to-be-blockbuster Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 would also bust blocks on the Wii -- despite the fact that the franchise's last outing, Black Ops, appeared on the console. During today's investor's call, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg brought said hesitation to an end, explaining, "We're pleased to have recently confirmed that we will release a Modern Warfare 3 Wii SKU this year, so as not to leave any of the community out of the excitement."

Next round of EA server culling includes Army of Two, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat

by on Jul 14th 2011 9:00AM

As boys turn to men, we know it's hard to say goodbye to yesterday, but time marches on and Electronic Arts has server power bills it's no longer keen on paying. EA has decided to shut down online functionality for several titles, including Army of Two, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat and Need for Speed: Most Wanted, as of August 11.

EA's explanation is that games being shut down represent "fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles," and that its server teams would rather "focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99% of customers playing our more popular games."
