Gamestop defends Xenoblade price tag, Metroid Prime Trilogy being restocked

Gamestop's inventory of pre-owned Xenoblade Chronicles copies seemed to inflate overnight on August 10, when the game showed up at previously dry retail locations and online for $90 a pop. Xenoblade is a famously hard-to-find Wii role-playing game that was sold only via Nintendo and Gamestop on first printing, and until now it seemed retail stock teetered on nonexistence.

We contacted Gamestop when Xenoblade was resurrected last week, and today the company issued a response:

"Gamestop regularly receives feedback from our PowerUp members regarding old titles they would like us to bring back, such as vintage games like Xenoblade Chronicles. We were recently able to source a limited number of copies of this title to carry in our stores and online.

"In fact, we have sourced several more vintage titles that will be hitting stores in the coming months, including Metroid Prime Trilogy.

"As always, our pricing for these games is competitive and is based on current market value driven by supply and demand. PowerUp Pro members always receive a 10 percent discount and earn PUR points on pre-owned purchases."

There's no word on the source of Gamestop's fresh copies. Nintendo has yet to respond to our requests for clarification, regarding whether this is a reprint or simply a surprising windfall of pre-owned games. Really, all of this comes down to one, simple question: How much is five stars worth to you?

Gamestop Q1 sales and profits down, mobile/digital sales up

Gamestop's financial data for the first quarter of its fiscal 2013 have arrived like a pizza with nearly 25 percent fewer toppings than the pizza you ordered during the same 13-week period last year. Also, cheesy bread sales are way up? This may not be the strongest analogy.

In non-allegorical terms, gross revenue (overall sales) and net income (post-tax profit) were both down year-over-year, at $1.865 billion and $54.6 million, respectively. As far as net income, that's a 24.69 percent decrease from the $72.5 million Gamestop reported at the end of Q1 2012.

Meanwhile, mobile device sales were up 290 percent, though this massive increase was largely due to the fact that Gamestop's mobile trade-in/sales program was just getting started during Q1 of 2012. Digital sales also increased, to the tune of 47.3 percent year-over-year, while new software sales, both physical and digital, fell 3.8 percent.

As was the case during Q1 2012, used hardware and software sales accounted for the majority of Gamestop's pre-tax profit, with new hardware and software sales making up just 29.5 percent of the quarter's overall gross.

[Wii U] GameStop confirms that Wii U software pre-orders double the Wii's numbers

How many Wii U games have been pre-ordered? GameStop have a partial answer to that question (partial in the sense that they have confirmed some figures for GameStop pre-orders) and the numbers aren't looking too shabby at all.

Gamasutra has posted a report revealing that 1.2 million pre-orders have been lodged for Wii U software, those are pretty good for the record. The report also reveals that GameStop's 500,000 Wii U consoles were sold out via pre-order almost immediately after the purchase option was made available in September.

Naturally, the increased software pre-order figures can be chalked up to a stronger line-up than the Wii had (which only had a couple of stand-up titles) including New Super Mario Bros. U, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, ZombiU, Assassin's Creed 3, Darksiders 2, Mass Effect 3, Batman: Arkham City, Scribblenauts Unlimited, and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge.

Can the Wii U replicate the Wii's success by unifying the casual audience and winning back the core gamers that felt abandoned during the Wii's lifespan?

Nar the games thing is the fault of lazy developers, we have gone from tagged on "Waggle" controls to tagged on touch screen controls.

I dunno, seems like a pretty solid mix to me. Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros. U, ZombiU, and Scribblenauts Unlimited for new stuff. Black Ops 2, Assassin's Creed III, Darksiders 2, Mass Effect 3, Arkham City, Ninja Gaiden 3 to give a strong supporting class if you don't already own them on other consoles. The only thing missing to me (that is preventing me from buying one right now) is that really killer launch exclusive. At least the Wii had Twilight Princess.

GameStop to warn California consumers of online fees for used games

GameStop has settled a suit, requiring the company to post signs in California stores warning consumers if certain games have additional fees for online content in a secondary sale. The company will also reimburse "consumers who purchased qualifying used games" with a $10 check and a $5 coupon if they are a PowerUp Rewards members and a $5 check and a $10 coupon if they aren't.

"The in-store and online warnings are an important benefit under the settlement as well, because if GameStop discloses the truth to consumers, it is unlikely that they will be able to continue selling used copies of certain games for only $5 less than the price of a new copy," said Mark Pifko, attorney for firm Baron and Budd and counsel in the lawsuit. "In fact, we already know that not long after the lawsuit was filed, GameStop lowered prices for used copies of many of the game titles identified in the lawsuit."

The firm has set up a Facebook page for affected consumers. We've contacted GameStop for comment.

GameStop Holding 3DS Demos on March 26 & April 2

According to GameStop’s website, they have the demos set at participating stores for March 26 and April 2. However, as of the time of this post, there are not any events listed, other than the midnight and 9am openings.
