Walmart celebrates Black Friday a week early, extends Christmas price match

by Earnest Cavalli Writer RSS on Nov 20th 2013 4:00PM

All Walmart wants for Christmas is cold, hard cash, so the company is dropping tradition and offering the deals in its recent Black Friday ad to customers as early as 8AM on November 22.

Notable deals found in the ad include a 4GB Xbox 360 console for $100, a PlayStation 3 with The Last of Us and Batman: Arkham Origins for $250 and a $100 2DS handheld. Many games are also discounted, including recent hits like Assassin's Creed 4, Battlefield 4 and Beyond: Two Souls.

Why release an ad specifically created for a singled day of the year before that day has ever rolled around? Simply put, Wal Mart is employing an especially aggressive sales strategy to combat the relatively short amount of time it has to entice holiday shoppers. "Black Friday is our Super Bowl and we plan to win," stated the company's chief merchandising officer, Duncan Mac Naughton. "With six fewer days from Thanksgiving to Christmas, the retail environment is more competitive than ever. Every opportunity to get a great deal - whether this weekend, on Thanksgiving Day or Black Friday weekend - matters for our customers."

Additionally, Wal Mart has revealed plans to extend its annual Christmas price matching promotion. Now, every item you purchase between November 1 and December 24 is eligible for a refund, assuming you find it included in any other stores' ads at a price cheaper than what Wal Mart's offering.

Keep in mind however, that this deal does not apply to items purchased on Black Friday or Thanksgiving Day. This promotion also ignores items you've seen on Amazon or any other non-local retailer, removing the possibility of playing retailers off one another for massive savings.

Update: An earlier version of this article mentioned a 250GB Xbox 360 on sale at $100. Walmart's sale is actually on a 4GB Xbox 360. We apologize for the confusion. BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Nov. 19, 2013 – Holiday shoppers don't have to wait until Black Friday to start shopping for deals at Walmart. At 8 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, Walmart will kick off a pre-Black Friday savings event in stores and online, lowering the prices on popular toys and electronics, to match select Black Friday offers from Target, Toys R' Us and Best Buy one week early.
Beginning today, the retailer also extends its Christmas Ad Match* to Walmart.com customers. Customers who purchase an item on Walmart.com, and find a lower price in a local brick and mortar competitor, can email christmasadmatch@walmart.com and receive the difference on a gift card. The same policy is in place for customers at Walmart stores for items purchased Nov. 1 through Dec. 24, excluding Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday.

"Black Friday is our Super Bowl and we plan to win," said Duncan Mac Naughton, chief merchandising and marketing officer, Walmart U.S. "With six fewer days from Thanksgiving to Christmas, the retail environment is more competitive than ever. Every opportunity to get a great deal – whether this weekend, on Thanksgiving Day or Black Friday weekend – matters for our customers. When it comes to price, we're going to deliver for them."

Examples of toys and electronics that are part of Walmart's pre-Black Friday saving event, while supplies last, include:

Toys:
LeapPad 2 – WAS: $79, NEW PRICE: $39.99
Little Tikes Cozy Coupe – WAS: $49.87, NEW PRICE: $34.99
Nerf Rebelle Crossbow – WAS: $19.88, NEW PRICE: $11.99
Monopoly Board Game – WAS: $7.77, NEW PRICE: $5
Hot Wheels Single Car – WAS: .97 cents, NEW PRICE: .60 cents
Electronics:
LG 50-inch HDTV – WAS: $598, NEW PRICE: $448
Skylanders and Infinity Starter Packs – WAS: $74.96, NEW PRICE: $37
Select PS4 and Xbox One Video Games such as NBA 2K14 and Battlefield 4 – WAS: $59.96, NEW PRICE: $49

On Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and any of their shopping trips, customers can take advantage of the everyday ad match policy* available at Walmart stores. If a customer spots a lower price on an advertised item, and comes into a Walmart store during the same day and time that the competitor's ad is valid, Walmart will match the price at the register.

Walmart's official Black Friday events will take place at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day and 8 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 29. The retailer will offer 21 one-hour guarantee items, "Manager Specials" and more hot deals than ever on the season's top gifts. Starting early on Thanksgiving morning, customers can shop on Walmart.com for some of the Black Friday deals that will also be available in stores. Customers can also take advantage of hundreds of online specials on Thanksgiving and Black Friday while supplies last.

Mac Naughton added, "Customers will ultimately decide when they want to shop. We have great options and great deals for them whenever, or however, they choose to shop Walmart."
*Editor's Note:
Christmas Ad Match applies to in-store prices only and excludes Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday ads.

Walmart stores will match the price of any local competitor's printed ad for an identical product. Restrictions apply. 1 Hour Guarantee items not available for ad match.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from your favourite Mother-Brain's, yo

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from your favourite Mother-Brain's, yo
Quiet times are afoot in the gaming (and non-gaming) world as everyone prepares for Christmas. So, from everyone here at vgZero, we hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

2011 was a pretty big year and crammed full of blockbuster releases (especially towards the latter half of the year) but by the looks of things 2012 is looking like it won't be pulling any punches. We'll have Sony's new baby hitting the Western world in February and from there March is promising some big hits with Mass Effect 3, Silent Hill: Downpour, Kid Icarus: Uprising and Max Payne 3. From there we'll just roll with whatever releases, with rumours starting to boil to the surface that a new generation of consoles isn't very far off (with Nintendo's Wii U being the first).

At the same time, I don't think people will forget 2011 anytime soon either. In 2011 Sony's PlayStation Network was breached to the dismay of many customers stirring up more controversy than anyone had prepared themselves, we actually got to play the incredibly illusive Duke Nukem Forever (despite the incredible mediocre form it released in), we lived through Activision and EA's awkward back-and-forth over the intense Modern Warfare 3 vs. Battlefield 3 period and we got both a new Zelda and Elder Scrolls title.

We aren't done though!! Keep your eyes out next week for some original pieces, including some Game of the Year stuff and a piece from Mike about 2012's biggest titles. So definitely stick around and see what we have in store. Let us know about your gaming haul this Christmas, because there were plenty of big titles to go around.

Happy Holidays everyone!!

Old Republic debuts in 10th, FIFA runs up UK charts before Christmas

by on Jan 2nd 2012 9:30AM

Chart-Track's UK sales list for the week leading up to Christmas Eve had FIFA 12 rallying, with sales up 34 percent, to score a first place finish. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 moved up one spot replacing Just Dance 3, which despite having a seven percent increase in sales, simply couldn't maintain its position and oscar mike'd into third.

The big premiere of the week was EA's Star Wars: The Old Republic, which debuted in tenth place, having launched on Tuesday the 20th. This is irregular for the UK, since most games launch on Friday. Despite the extra time, the high-profile MMO's launch week didn't beat out Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The saving grace of The Old Republic's lower ranking premiere is Chart-Track doesn't count digitally distributed copies. According to EA, things are going well with its new MMO.

Check out the UK's top ten games for the pre-Christmas week after the break.

WRUP: Twas the week before Christmas...

by on Dec 16th 2011 10:20PM

And all through the 'Stiq, the consoles were humming with no single brick. We've got a lot of games to play before the GOTY talk gets feisty.

What's everyone playing? Alexander Sliwinski (@XanderSliwinski): Having finally finished Skyrim I simply don't know what to do with myself. Mortal Kombat? Yeah, sure, Mortal Kombat sounds good.Arthur Gies (@Aegies): I'm about to dip headfirst into SWTOR as the series of sequels to the KOTOR titles that BioWare told me it is. Then, maybe, just maybe, Back to Karkand will work!Ben Gilbert (@BigBossBgilbert): Not a console was stirring, nor even a computer mouse. Then suddenly screens lit up, reflecting faces of joy, as explosions from Wake Island, announced "Battlefield! Ahoy!"Christopher Grant (@ChrisGrant): [...]David Hinkle (@DaveHinkle): This weekend will probably be full of Magic 2012 and Assassin's Creed: Revelations. I heard there's also this beta for Gotham City Impostors worth checking out.Griffin McElroy (@griffinmcelroy): [...]JC Fletcher (@jcfletcher): I have a lot mo to push in Pushmo, and a lot more war to secretly, yet melodramatically wage in MGS3.Jess Conditt (@JessConditt): I'm graduating from university today, so from here on out I'll be playing this little game called Life. You probably haven't heard of it. It's really exclusive.Jordan Mallory (@Jordan_Mallory): [...]Justin McElroy (@JustinMcElroy): [...]Ludwig Kietzmann (@LudwigK): Now that I've collected the three things in Skyward Sword, I can begin collecting ... the three things. I'm also ready to pounce on Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD and scrutinize its beefed-up chickens.Mike Schramm (@MikeSchramm): I was planning to spend the weekend playing Star Wars: The Old Republic (as a smuggler named Skram on Keller's Void). But that MW3 update is suddenly calling my name...Richard Mitchell (@SenseiRAM): I must play all the things. Zelda and Skyrim mostly, with some Trine 2. Maybe I'll throw in Phantasmagoria as well. Yup.Steven Wong: Playing Star Wars: The Old Republic and mastering the ways of The Force.

It's a Skyrim Christmas on the UK charts

by on Dec 19th 2011 9:15AM

Skyrim rested high atop the UK charts last week, breaking an eight year stint by EA and Activision. Bethesda's massive RPG occupied the top spot during week 51 -- dubbed the "Christmas Chart" by Chart-Track. Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City owned the chart in 2002, prior to EA's Medal of Honor: Rising Sun and Activision's Call of Duty franchise.

Just Dance 3 came in about 15,000 units behind Skyrim. Followers of the charts can probably predict what's coming in the new year, as the Just Dance series has been a sleeping giant that rises once the holidays are over for the past two years.

The rest of the top ten (after the break) consists of the usual suspects. When the UK charts return in the new year we'll find out how Star Wars: The Old Republic did during its Christmas week launch.
