New Nintendo eShop Releases: 3D Sonic, 3D Altered Beast, Donkey Kong sale

by Sinan Kubba Writer RSS on Dec 5th 2013 1:00PM

Like the rest of the games industry, the Nintendo eShop is slowing down ahead of the holidays. We're not quite at the snoring-by-the-fireplace stage, but going by this week's offerings it's already donned a suitably seasonal sweater.

Still, the 3DS gets two 3D-enhanced Sega classics in Sonic the Hedgehog and Altered Beast, and there are a few other bits and bobs, too. There's also a week-long 30 percent sale on Donkey Kong games, including Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. on both 3DS and Wii U, Donkey Kong 3 on Wii U, and Game & Watch: Donkey Kong Jr. on 3DS.

As ever, you'll find the full list of new releases snoozing past the break.

New Nintendo eShop releases: River City Ransom, Adventure Time, Mario & Sonic

by Richard Mitchell Writer RSS on Nov 14th 2013 3:30PM

Everyone may be all abuzz with PlayStation 4 madness (you're keeping up with our launch coverage, right?), but that doesn't mean the eShop is taking a week off. In fact, it's a very solid week for all the Nintendo downloaders out there. Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games debuts on both Wii U and 3DS today, and staring on November 19, both platforms also pick up Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON'T KNOW!.

Today on Virtual Console, the 3DS gets the classic beat-em-up and pompadour simulator, River City Ransom. Elsewhere on Virtual Console, Nintendo is running a sale on Zelda games. The 3DS and Wii U versions of The Legend of Zelda and Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link have been knocked down to $3.49 each. Meanwhile, Link's Awakening DX, the old Game Boy Color essential, is discounted to $3.99. The sale runs from Nov. 14, 9 a.m. PT through Nov. 21, 8:59 a.m. PT.

And, what's this? A WiiWare game? It is! For all you Wii obsessives, your collection won't be complete without Deer Drive Legends.

Nintendo started their Nintendo Direct off with some new information regarding Sonic Lost World, it was also accompanied with some new footage.

Firstly, Nintendo confirmed that Sonic Lost World will be available for the Wii U and 3DS on October 18th in Europe and on October 22nd in North America.

Secondly, the stream revealed that the game includes special radio controlled gadgets that players will be able to create and customise on the 3DS version of the game. After they've created a gadget they are happy with they'll be able to send it to the Wii U version and use it in the game's co-operative multiplayer modes.

Lastly, here's the footage that was shown in the stream courtesy of GameXplain.

This game actually looks quite good, it could be the first Sonic game worth keeping an eye on in a long while. What will you be picking it up for; Wii U or 3DS?

Trailer for New Sonic Game Hits Web

Sonic 4 Trailer

Last September, SEGA announced “Project Needlemouse”, the nickname for the new 2D Sonic the Hedgehog game. Recently, SEGA confirmed the official name to Gamespot.com. The publisher released a new trailer and revealed “Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1?:

The game is coming to Xbox Live, Playstation Network, and Wiiware this summer. We will finally have a sequel to Sonic & Knuckles after so many years of waiting, and not too long for call of duty black ops.

The teaser trailer for this new game highlights the past Sonic the Hedgehog games, while showing viewers what the new adventure has in store.

With many classic moves still in play, the tradition side of the game keeps its youth with a modern twist. And remember to watch out for your favorite villain, Dr. Eggman!

NintendoWare Weekly: Mutant Mudds, Mario & Sonic, Flush the Goldfish

by on Jan 26th 2012 12:30PM

As promised, another 3DS demo is available on the eShop, this time for Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. It may not have zombies, but then, it may have Waluigi. Renegade Kid's Mutant Mudds, its first self-published project, is also up on the eShop this week, offering challenging platforming and shooting and some dramatic 3D effects.

DSiWare features a sequel to the indie game Flipper; though if you played it, you still won't recognize Flipper 2: Flush the Goldfish. The original was an isometric puzzle game about reshaping environments ... and the sequel is a side-scrolling action game that uses one contextual button!

WiiWare Newton Vs The Horde (RadiationBurn Ltd., 1 player, 500 Wii Points): Build traps to "splat" monsters in this physics simulation puzzle.3DS eShop DSiWare Lola's Alphabet Train (BeiZ, 1 player, $1.99/200 DSi Points): Learn to spell simple words with an adorable panda! (It helps if you are very small)Flipper 2: Flush the Goldfish (Engine Software, 1 player, $4.99/500 DSi Points): A single-button side-scroller about a goldfish in a robot suit.

[PC, PS3, X360] Review Roundup - Sonic Generations

[PC, PS3, X360] Review Roundup - Sonic Generations
[Image: game-news-image-2011-adf002e98f3ebdb02be...3aa0b4.jpg]Game Informer - 6.75/10 - "The last half of the game serves only to remind you of how far the series has fallen from its original form. I felt smothered by Sonic Team’s insistence on shoehorning recent Sonic games, no matter how awful, into the 20-year timeline. Why would Sega pass up full level tributes to Sonic 3 or Sonic CD in favor of a remixed version of a stage from Sonic Colors, which released only a year ago? At the end of the game, old and new Sonic part ways. As they do, modern Sonic says to his retro doppelganger, 'Hey Sonic, enjoy your future, it’s going to be great!' If he only knew."

1UP - B - "There's a great deal of game here, which speaks to just how smart Sega is in iterating on a small collection of stages, rather than going the usual route of wasting valuable HD assets on a series of sprawling (and typically unplayable) levels for Sonic to get lost in. If the inevitable sequel to Generations offers the same refinements Sonic 2 brought to the original Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega's blue rodent might just completely emerge from the pit of embarrassment he slowly dug for himself throughout the '00s. "

Destructoid - 8/10 - "While it's not quite the stunning triumph that many had hoped for, Sonic Generations is a truly great game that provides some of the best Sonic action ever seen and pays fitting tribute to Sonic the Hedgehog -- highlighting both his successes and his failures. If Sonic Team can keep this up, then the blue blur will most definitely be back on top."

CVG - 7.5/10 - "With other fan appeal and Chaos Emeralds coming from showdowns with Sonic's rivals - Shadow, Silver, and Metal - and familiar bosses like the Death Egg Robot and the rather-too-similar Perfect Chaos - Generations is a great game for pressing out the fluids from a hyperactive nostalgia gland. Sonic Generations hits its target well - with the genuinely bruising qualification that it can frequently be difficult to look at."

IGN - 8.5/10 - "It feels refreshing to be able to say that Sonic is good again. His upward trajectory over the last year continues and he’s only gaining momentum. Sonic Generations is largely a game for the most hardcore of Sonic fans, but for the millions who have fond memories of narrowly dodging spikes, grinding on rails, or even that time he was a pinball, Sonic Generations is a game made for you."

Mario & Sonic go to Europe in a blue Wii bundle

by on Oct 10th 2011 9:26AM

In honor of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Nintendo announced plans to launch a special blue Wii bundle in Europe this November. Despite the Sonic theme, the system (one of the new-model, GameCube-free Wiis) is a lighter blue than the hedgehog. It will include the game, a matching Wii Remote Plus, and likely a Nunchuk in the same color.

When Nintendo announced the new Wii configuration back in August, it suggested that other bundles would be on the way. We don't think it would only have been referring to this one -- which means we should look forward to more variants in Europe this holiday. We should also look forward to colossal sales from this game, as always!

Mario & Sonic at the London Olympics' release dates, yellow box revealed

by on Jul 27th 2011 3:30PM

Sega has sent out new media for Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, giving us our first look at the sprint and hurdle events, as well as the curiously yellow Wii box. Why does it come in a yellow box? We don't know, but Sega is proud of the achievement, noting that it's a "first for the series and for third party games publishers."

In the galleries below, you can check out a couple of screens of both the Wii and 3DS versions. The Wii game is due in North America on November 15 and in Europe November 18; the 3DS game will cross the finish line sometime in February.

Sonic 20th anniversary figurine is looking sharp

by on Jun 16th 2011 9:09PM

In celebration of Sonic the Hedgehog's 20th anniversary, Sega is making some pretty slick figurines. They "will not be sold anywhere," according to Sega, and only one thousand are being manufactured. Presumably, the only way to get one will be via contests or promotions. The company didn't offer any specs, though the figure appears to be fairly large -- check out the photo after the break for reference.

Fun fact: There are two versions of the figurine, one for the United States and another for other parts of the world (pictured above). The two versions are nearly identical apart from one small detail. See if you can guess what it is.
