Saints Row IV has straddled the headlines over the last few weeks, mostly for controversial reasons. A new developer diary has been released describing the new game as a "love song" to the fans of the franchise.

Volition is clearly very appreciative that their fans have supported them this long, and I'm sure they are happy that they survived the collapse of THQ. Check out the video below, courtesy of GameNewsOfficial on YouTube.

Saints Row IV releases this month for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

Rumor: Disney shutters Epic Mickey developer Junction Point

by Alexander Sliwinski Writer RSS on Jan 28th 2013 5:14PM

Warren Spector's Junction Point studio has reportedly been shut down by Disney. The word comes from Austin-neighbor Roberts Space Industries, who tweeted, "Second 21 gun salute for a studio in 7 days. Fare-the-well Junction Point! We hope that you all find new studios soon!"

We've reached out to Disney for an official statement.

Industry veteran George Broussard notes, "The Junction Point rumors have been circulating a while. Warning signs when you give employees 2 months off after shipping."

Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two was not a critical nor financial win for Disney, reportedly selling 270,000 copies in North America by the end of 2012.

Update: Roberts Space Industries has deleted its previous tweet stating it has "no insider info" on Junction Point's status. Oddly, the site it sources as having provided the info links back to the exact same tweet from RSI regarding the shut down. Disney corporate communications has still not responded to numerous requests for comment.

Update 2: Disney confirms closure.

Answering questions on GameFAQs, Bob Chamot, a designer at the studio said, "We haven't forgotten about Conduit over here, either. I would expect some new Conduit-related news before the year is out."

[GDC'12, Multi] Just Cause developer plans to announce a new title at E3

[GDC'12, Multi] Just Cause developer plans to announce a new title at E3
[Image: game-news-image-2012-6835114346af80a6e43...5e7b46.jpg]
Before anyone asks, they have confirmed it is not a new Just Cause title or a new Renegade Ops title. Apart from that we don't really know a lot more about what we can expect from these guys.

We do know that it will be a licensed game but not one based on a movie, Christofer Sundberg (CEO of Avalance Studios) let that much information slip out in a recent interview with IGN.

"We aren't particularly interested in movie-based games," he said. "I think the whole industry destroyed that. So much money's been pumped into those crappy games, it's amazing. It's really scary when you look at how bad they are."

There have been rumours for a long time that the studio was attached to Mad Max: Fury Road (Sundberg refused to comment), but your best bet would be to wait for E3 to roll around. The title will run on an enhanced version of the Just Cause 2 engine and will definitely still be an open-world story-driven experience (as this is what the studio is committing itself to).

So, does anyone want to take any guesses?

Wii developer Red Fly Studio lays off 30

by on Jul 1st 2011 11:30AM

Sad news from Austin developer Red Fly Studio, which confirmed to GameSpot that it unexpectedly had to terminate approximately 30 employees on June 22. CEO Dan Borth explained, "The reduction of staff was a response to a large high-profile project that was, to our surprise, reevaluated and then canceled."

Red Fly is perhaps best known for its Wii versions of licensed games that are often as well -- if not better -- received than their 360 and PS3 counterparts (as was the case with the recent Thor). Here's hoping those affected land on their feet.

[Multi] Split/Second Developer Black Rock Faces Lay-offs; Sequel Canned

[Multi] Split/Second Developer Black Rock Faces Lay-offs; Sequel Canned
[Image: game-news-image-2011-9812b6a3287d5c27bc1...6e3043.jpg]
Black Rock Studio, the developer behind last year's solid racing title Split/Second, will be losing around 40 employees as a result of redundancies according to an anonymous source at the Disney Interactive Studios subsidiary.

The source told Eurogamer that half of the studio's staff have had nothing to do since December because all of their game concepts have been rejected by Disney Interactive: "It seems Disney have been unable to provide us with a project to work on, and our concept pitches clearly haven't gone down well (despite there being many of them)." Such concepts included a sequel to quad-based racer Pure, as well as a sequel to Split/Second, amongst others.

It's not all bad news though: "The inactive portion of the studio has been expecting redundancies for months, so this doesn't come as a surprise to anyone. It's sad that it's come to this of course, but for many people they'll be quite happy to take the money and go, as they've been sitting around doing nothing for months," said the source. He also stated that the rest of the studio's staff have actively been working on a project that is "new and risky, so I imagine [Disney] don't want to risk putting two teams on it."

Split/Second gained impressive reviews last year, currently sporting a Metacritic rating of 84, and sold about 900,000 copies on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

[Multi] Developer Sues Beyonce for $100M

[Multi] Developer Sues Beyonce for $100M
[Image: game-news-image-2011-14d8a40b3896c52a65a...6ca95f.jpg]
Developer Gate Five is suing famous singer/actress Beyonce Knowles for "a bad faith breach of contract so callous that, on what appeared to be a whim, she destroyed Gate Five's business and drove 70 people into unemployment, the week before Christmas."

The lawsuit, which seeks $100 million in damages, claims that during the development of a motion-based dance game called Starpower: Beyonce, the singer "made an extortionate demand for entirely new compensation terms she wanted. When her maneuver backfired and drove away the financier (who found Ms. Carter too erratic to do business with), she pulled out of the project in breach of the agreement." Gate Five also says that she walked away from the project just before Christmas, resulting in 70 employees working on the game losing their jobs during the holidays.

To build some more empathy for their case, the summons also says that Beyonce's actions were "so unscrupulous that her then manager (who is also her father) renounced them." There has been no comment yet from Beyonce or her representatives.

[DSiWare] Spirit Hunters – Developer Diary

YouTube Preview Image

Spirit Hunters Inc is a social role playing game in which the player hunts, battles and captures spirits which inhabit our world. The game uses the front facing camera of the Nintendo DSi™ to create an augmented reality, merging computer generated spirits with the player’s real environment where the battles take place.

“The development of the game is really taking shape and we are delighted to be able to show the battle mode which will represent a large part of the player’s in-game experience”, said Nic Watt, Creative Director at Nnooo. “Now that we have some of the sound effects and player abilities in place, we are able to give a much better feel for what it’s like battling against the spirits.”

The player is part of an international task-force called Spirit Hunters Inc which is charged with capturing mischievous spirits and sending them back to the spirit world. Players will have to hunt down these spirits and coax them out of their hiding places before doing battle with them through their Nintendo DSi. On capturing spirits, players will be rewarded with experience points and in-game currency with which they will be able to level up, replenish health, buy useful spirit hunting items and traps and learn new battling abilities.

“We are very excited about how the game is developing”, said Watt. “Augmented Reality is a really exciting new area for games and we think that Spirit Hunters Inc is really making use of all of the Nintendo DSi’s features. We are also planning a version for the Nintendo 3DS™. More details about this will be revealed in the future.”

Spirit Hunters Inc is scheduled for release on Nintendo DSiWare later this year.
