Saints Row IV is getting closer and closer with every day; continuing with promotion the Saints Row YouTube channel has uploaded their second developer diary.

This new video talks about the game world and the possibilities that the development team is tapping into with the game's setting. It also features a brief snippet of the infamous anal probe weapon as well, if you are interested in seeing that again.

Having second breakfast with Lego The Lord of the Rings

by Writer RSS on Oct 25th 2012 2:00PM

Lego The Lord of the Rings struggles to find its voiceWe've seen nearly a dozen games spawned from the revived Lord of the Rings franchise: action games, strategy games, adventure games, RPGs, MMORPGs ... a lengthy list that only grows longer when you take various expansions and add-ons into account.

Next up is Lego The Lord of the Rings from TT Games, a studio that has been pumping out Lego games at a rate of roughly two per year. It makes a certain amount of sense, what with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hitting theaters in December 2012. Not to mention the fact that few understand how to navigate a saturated market better than TT Games, which continues to find success with its family-friendly Lego adventures.

Lego The Lord of the Rings appears to take very few chances, based on what we saw during a recent hands-on preview session. All of the familiar bits and bobs work just the way they always have. The backpack-equipped Fellowship can now store an inventory of useful items, but you're still busting up Lego objects, collecting tons of Lego studs, and rolling your eyes at goofy Lego humor.

This particular demo focused on the Weathertop scene from The Fellowship of the Ring, in which Frodo and his hobbit pals are confronted by Sauron's Ringwraiths. TT Games' adherence to Jackson's vision is immediately apparent, with familiar scenes from the movie playing out like shot-for-shot machinima re-creations. You'll still feel a chill when you see an overhead shot of the Nazgul slowly converging on the hilltop campsite and you'll still let out a quiet cheer when Strider comes to the rescue as the score swells behind him. That's not to say TT Games doesn't take some creative liberties. During the Weathertop sequence, the bits that diverge from the movie are most effective when they tie into what we know. Sam, Pippin, and Merry's efforts to cook up a second breakfast while Frodo sleeps play out in the game as a mini-challenge that requires you to track down ingredients along with wood for the campfire. It's simple stuff, but it serves to fill in bits of the story that never played out on the big screen.

The hobbits' subsequent flight to the summit of Weathertop, on the other hand, feels like an overstep. It may make sense to give Sam the ability to grow oversized flower "platforms" from a gameplay perspective, but it sure doesn't fit with the lore. The youthful target audience for Lego LotR probably won't mind, but it looks like nitpicking Rings geeks will have plenty of opportunity to get their nitpick on.

Cooking second breakfast in Lego The Lord of the RingsThe Weathertop sequence also serves to introduce a newly revealed feature, "Ringwraith mode." In the movies, Frodo slips into a shadowy otherworld whenever he slips on the One Ring to turn invisible. This environment is also realized in the game, and it factors into a bit of puzzle-solving after the Nazgul attack.

To drive back Sauron's minions from the Weathertop summit, Frodo and Sam must light five campfires. The catch is that the woodpiles for each fire must be located – some are hidden inside breakable objects – and assembled, Lego-style. Some of the piles can be found and assembled by Sam in the real world, but some are only visible to the ring-wearing Frodo until they're put together.

Whenever you switch over to take command of the invisible hobbit, the camera pulls in and locks itself to a over-the-shoulder perspective. Frodo creeps along slowly when he's in this state; he can still attack and he can perform combat rolls, but the zoomed-in field of view makes it difficult to tell where you are or where you're headed. That may well be the point, but the tight framing and movement-resistant camera make it difficult even to complete some puzzles once you've solved them.

This became most apparent during the demo when one puzzle required Frodo to break a wall-mounted object with a thrown rock. Holding down the X button (on an Xbox 360 controller) brings up an aiming reticle, but the stubborn camera needed to be coaxed with the right analog stick in order to bring the target into view. Have you ever tried to manipulate the right analog stick while holding down a face button? It's... awkward. Challenging too, and not at all in a fun way.

Look for Lego The Lord of the Rings on virtually every platform released since 2005 sometime later this fall.

Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes secures UK top spot for second week

by Writer RSS on Jul 2nd 2012 8:30AM

Lego Batman 2 DC Super Heroes arrest top spot on UK chartsLego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes "comfortably" kept The Amazing Spider-Man away from the highest spot on Chart-Track's UK sales chart. There were three new entries in the top five last week: the web-slinger swung into second, and Spec Ops: The Line and London 2012: The Official Video Game (about... London??) landed in third and fourth place, respectively.

The launch of Skyrim's Dawnguard DLC helped propel sales of the game up 121 percent. The launch of Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on PS Vita had a similar impact, shooting the game into tenth place on the charts and sales of the game up 532 percent - making it the top selling Vita game last week "by a large margin."

[PC] Diablo III potentially slips into the second quarter... sadly

[PC] Diablo III potentially slips into the second quarter... sadly

Just when you think Diablo III is getting closer... it is snatched away from us by some unforeseen circumstance, this situation is no different. When Blizzard announced they were tinkering with some of the game's mechanics some more we knew it was going to be making that Q1 estimation.

Well, now our worst fears have become a reality with Blizzard confirming they are now scheduling to have the game ready for release by Q2 of 2012. What does this mean? Well, it means that they are now hoping to have it released by the 30th of June, 2012.

That may feel like an eternity away, but you can be sure that it will be worth the wait for those of you who spent hundreds of hours clicking through Diablo II

[3DS] Nintendo 3DS getting second circle pad attachment... no, this is real

[3DS] Nintendo 3DS getting second circle pad attachment... no, this is real
Earlier today, rumours surfaced that the second circle pad attachment for the Nintendo 3DS was actually coming and that Famitsu had an image. Out of caution we avoided posting it, but it looks like an image has exploded onto the internet. [Image: game-news-image-2011-b8a751cb876f0854c2b...fbf356.jpg]
So yeah, there that is.

As well as that, it seemingly confirms the existence of Monster Hunter Tri Version G will be coming to the Nintendo 3DS. So, according to the image the 3DS will just attach itself to the handheld and function as the second circle pad. I'm not sure how to feel about this, I suppose we'll get to judge when Nintendo start showing it off. It is safe to assume that this will come up at their conference this weekend.

Its not the worst addon thought.

There are some Gameboy ones that are really bad (Solar panels on the underside?)

Deus Ex maintains UK top spot, Driver races into second

by on Sep 5th 2011 9:30AM

Deus Ex isn't quite ready to give up the glory it earned for knocking Zumba Fitness off the top of the UK All Formats sales chart last week. The conspiratorial RPG may have experienced a 46 percent reduction in sales from its debut week, but it still had enough to keep Driver: San Francisco in second place for its premiere week.

The usual cast make up the rest of the top ten, including Zumba Fitness dancing in third (take that!), with the exception of Madden NFL 12, which found a nook in sixth. The only other new title to enter the top 40 last week was Bodycount, which despite serious faults, found a home in 36th place. Find the UK top ten after the break.

Zumba Fitness stays atop UK charts for fifth week, LA Noire brings up second place

by on Jun 27th 2011 8:45AM

It seems that 505 Games' Zumba Fitness motion game is destined to occupy every living room in the UK, as it was the UK's highest selling title last week -- even after 31 weeks of availability. Regaining a place in the top five, Rockstar's LA Noire took second place, though it saw a 15 percent dip in sales.

Here's where things get really depressing: Suda 51 and Shinji Mikami's excellent Shadows of the Damned debuted on the charts at number 31, beaten not only by the likes of recently released stinkfest Duke Nukem Forever, but even older titles like Art Academy and EA Sports Active 2. FEAR 3 faced a starkly different reception, landing the number three spot just below LA Noire. We're not mad, UK readers and EA marketers -- just, ya know, disappointed.

Dirt 3 debuts in second on UK charts, LA Noire still tops

by on May 31st 2011 9:05AM

L.A. Noire, which premiered as the UK's fastest-selling new IP, maintained its top position on Chart-Track's UK All Formats chart this past week. Dirt 3, the only new competitor to race into the top ten, had to settle for second.

Lego Pirates of the Caribbean lost some wind in its sails and fell to third, with Brink rounding out the top five. Zumba Fitness maintained fourth, with sales up 19 percent last week. It's like Zumba Fitness was infused with that Just Dance "staying power" magic -- and as it happens, Just Dance 2, despite not being in the top ten, has been hanging around close by (at No. 11).

Price promotions helped give sales boosts to some of the top ten remainders. Check those out after the break.

Portal 2 dominates UK charts; Mortal Kombat maintains second place

by on May 3rd 2011 8:45AM

Valve's Portal 2 and Warner Bros. Interactive's Mortal Kombat stayed locked in kombat for a second week at the top of the UK software sales chart. Portal 2 maintained its dominance for a second round, but opted not to perform a fatality on Mortal Kombat. Spectators of the tournament included Zumba Fitness, Operation Flashpoint: Red River and Call of Duty: Black Ops in spots three through five, respectively.

The holiday double-whammy in the UK last week (Easter Monday and the Royal Wedding) caused a disturbance in sales. The top ten consisted only of previously released titles, with Just Dance 2 doing the cha-cha back up the charts to re-enter in the 10 spot.

Chart-Track
notes that Sega launched two new titles last week, with Virtua Tennis 4 charting at number 23 and Thor: God of Thunder missing the Top 40 entirely. Check out the usual suspects of chart toppers after the break.
