Walmart celebrates Black Friday a week early, extends Christmas price match

All Walmart wants for Christmas is cold, hard cash, so the company is dropping tradition and offering the deals in its recent Black Friday ad to customers as early as 8AM on November 22.

Notable deals found in the ad include a 4GB Xbox 360 console for $100, a PlayStation 3 with The Last of Us and Batman: Arkham Origins for $250 and a $100 2DS handheld. Many games are also discounted, including recent hits like Assassin's Creed 4, Battlefield 4 and Beyond: Two Souls.

Why release an ad specifically created for a singled day of the year before that day has ever rolled around? Simply put, Wal Mart is employing an especially aggressive sales strategy to combat the relatively short amount of time it has to entice holiday shoppers. "Black Friday is our Super Bowl and we plan to win," stated the company's chief merchandising officer, Duncan Mac Naughton. "With six fewer days from Thanksgiving to Christmas, the retail environment is more competitive than ever. Every opportunity to get a great deal - whether this weekend, on Thanksgiving Day or Black Friday weekend - matters for our customers."

Additionally, Wal Mart has revealed plans to extend its annual Christmas price matching promotion. Now, every item you purchase between November 1 and December 24 is eligible for a refund, assuming you find it included in any other stores' ads at a price cheaper than what Wal Mart's offering.

Keep in mind however, that this deal does not apply to items purchased on Black Friday or Thanksgiving Day. This promotion also ignores items you've seen on Amazon or any other non-local retailer, removing the possibility of playing retailers off one another for massive savings.

Update: An earlier version of this article mentioned a 250GB Xbox 360 on sale at $100. Walmart's sale is actually on a 4GB Xbox 360. We apologize for the confusion. BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Nov. 19, 2013 – Holiday shoppers don't have to wait until Black Friday to start shopping for deals at Walmart. At 8 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, Walmart will kick off a pre-Black Friday savings event in stores and online, lowering the prices on popular toys and electronics, to match select Black Friday offers from Target, Toys R' Us and Best Buy one week early.
Beginning today, the retailer also extends its Christmas Ad Match* to Walmart.com customers. Customers who purchase an item on Walmart.com, and find a lower price in a local brick and mortar competitor, can email christmasadmatch@walmart.com and receive the difference on a gift card. The same policy is in place for customers at Walmart stores for items purchased Nov. 1 through Dec. 24, excluding Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday.

On Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and any of their shopping trips, customers can take advantage of the everyday ad match policy* available at Walmart stores. If a customer spots a lower price on an advertised item, and comes into a Walmart store during the same day and time that the competitor's ad is valid, Walmart will match the price at the register.

Walmart's official Black Friday events will take place at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day and 8 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 29. The retailer will offer 21 one-hour guarantee items, "Manager Specials" and more hot deals than ever on the season's top gifts. Starting early on Thanksgiving morning, customers can shop on Walmart.com for some of the Black Friday deals that will also be available in stores. Customers can also take advantage of hundreds of online specials on Thanksgiving and Black Friday while supplies last.

Mac Naughton added, "Customers will ultimately decide when they want to shop. We have great options and great deals for them whenever, or however, they choose to shop Walmart."

Following Nintendo and Microsoft's announcements of impressive hardware sales for the week including Black Friday, Sony shared some fairly remarkable figures of its own for its two current consoles.

More than 525,000 PlayStation 3 consoles were sold last week in the US, beating both the Wii (300,000) and the Wii U (400,000), but still falling short of the Xbox 360's hefty 750,000 units for the week. The Vita, which was featured in numerous Black Friday deals, moved a respectable 160,000 units of its own, trailing behind Nintendo handhelds the DS (275,000) and 3DS (250,000). Sony did not include sales for the aging PSP in the report.

X-Arcade sticks it to Black Friday with two discounted arcade platforms

X-Arcade, maker of American-style arcade cabinet control arrays, has discounted its Dual Joystick and Tankstick + Trackball platforms by $30 and $40 respectively, bringing the price of in-home 80's arcade realism down to $100/$160. That is, so long as you insert coin (get it?) before midnight on Sunday, November 25.

Each platform comes equipped with two bat-top style joysticks, 16 regular buttons and two first/second-player buttons. The Tankstick + Trackball configuration, as you may have guessed, also comes with a Missile Command-esque trackball installed in the middle. Both sticks connect to PC/Mac/Linux boxes through USB and to game consoles via optional adapters.

Toys 'R' Us offers 'buy one, get one for $1' game sale, lots more on Black Friday

Toys 'R' Us' Black Friday ad is 32 pages of red and green deals, and as usual, the toy store's got plenty of gaming deals ready for purchase, including a few deals on consoles.

The biggest hook is a big "buy one, get one for $1" sale going on, with dozens of games available for a buck each when you buy one at a standard price. In addition to lots of great DSi games, even modern Xbox 360 and PS3 games are on the list, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more current titles like Dishonored and Need for Speed: Most Wanted. All Wii U games are also "buy one, get one 40% off," so if you want to fill out your library for Nintendo's new console, there you go.

Controllers are also on sale, from the Xbox's wireless controller for $29.99 or a wired version for just $16.19, or a PS3 dual shock controller for $32.99 in blue or black models. A PS Vita Call of Duty Wi-Fi bundle is available for $199.99 with a free "10-in-1 essentials pack," and a Nintendo 3DS Red system with Super Mario 3D Land bundle is $169.99 and comes with a free 3DS headset.

Consoles are all pretty standard prices, though there are a few extras to grab. The 250 GB PlayStation 3 bundle is priced at $199.99 and includes a free Air Flo controller for your trouble. An Air Flo controller is also bundled with the $249.99 Xbox 360 4 GB console and Kinect bundle, along with an optional 50% discount on a one-year Xbox Live membership. The black Wii and Sports Resort bundle is $129.99, with a free Lego Remote and a $10 gift card.

Toys 'R' Us is also big on Skylanders this year. There's an exclusive "Stealth Elf" Skylanders Giants figure available for $9.99, which will give you $5 off any other Giants figures you buy. The Skylanders Battle Arena is $39.99 with a free Coliseum display unit. Single figures are all buy one get one free, and you can get a Skylanders Giants starter pack for $49.99.

You can pick up an 4th Generation Apple iPod touch for $199.99, and doing so will nab you a $30 iTunes card for buying games or music as you see fit. Android tablets are also on sale: There's a Kyros 8" tablet for $99, a Polaroid 10.1" tablet for $119.99, and a Samsung Galaxy 2 for $299.99.

And finally, if your gaming tastes run much more open-ended and analog, there's a deal on a $6.49 Etch a Sketch unit. We know which doorbuster deal we'll be running for this year.

Target's Black Friday deals include 360, PS3, Wii, Vita and 3DS bundles, various discounted miscellany

Look, we're not your parents. We're not going to sit here, high upon our internet throne and tell you what you can and can't do. Even if we did discourage you from putting yourself in a potentially trample-prone environment, you'd still do it for dat savings.

Take Target's Black Friday deals, for example. These scanned pages reveal PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 bundles with two games each for $200, as well as a free copy of Just Dance Kids 2 with the purchase of a $120 Wii bundle. Vita and 3DS bundles (with one game each) are available for $200 and $150 respectively, while PS3, 360 and Wii controllers cost $40 and a bonus $20 giftcard is included in the purchase of Halo 4, Assassin's Creed 3 or Forza Horizon. You can even get Adele's irrelevant first album for $5, or one of those cool magnadoodle thingies for half a sawbuck.

Just Dance franchise sold a million units during Black Friday week

Holy fu-nky chicken, Ubisoft announced this morning that Just Dance 3 sold 700,000 copies on the Wii and Xbox 360 over six days, between November 20 and 26 of the Black Friday shopathon. The company also stated that Just Dance 3 sales are up 48 percent from those of Just Dance 2, which launched in mid-October of 2010, when compared "year over year to date in the US."

Ubisoft also claimed it has 76 percent market share among dance games in 2011. That statistic could be a little messy, since unlike Zumba Fitness and Dance Central, which has one sequel, the Just Dance franchise follows Activision's Guitar Hero model of suffocating saturation.

The Just Dance franchise currently includes: Just Dance 3, Just Dance 2, Just Dance, Just Dance Summer Party, Just Dance Kids 2, Just Dance Kids, Michael Jackson: The Experience, The Black Eyed Peas Experience and ABBA You Can Dance. All these titles combined sold over one million copies in the US during Black Friday week. The NPD previously stated that dance game sales are up 326 percent over last year. Ubisoft PR:

Last week retailers reported record sales as the holiday shopping season officially kicked off with Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving that marks the traditional start of the holiday shopping season. Ubisoft set new records last week for its Just Dance franchise, the world's No. 1 video game dance brand. From November 20-26 Just Dance 3 on the Wii system from Nintendo and Kinect for Xbox 360 sold thru more than 700,000 copies in the United States, based on internal estimates. Just Dance 3 on the Nintendo Wii system has sold approximately 48 percent more than what Just Dance 2 sold on the Wii year over year to date in the U.S.

Ubisoft is looking forward to its final dance game release of the calendar year with Just Dance 3 on the PlayStation Move, which releases next week on Tuesday, December 6th."

Gamestop's Black Friday deals are about what you'd expect, still bonkers

Black Friday is already looking pretty crazy this year, and Gamestop won't be doing anything to reduce the amount of consumerist insanity permeating the American consciousness. If anything, the fact that its sales flier proudly boasts that limited edition Zelda 3DS on its front cover indicates a clear and unmistakable aim to misbehave, in a metaphorical, capitalist sense.

We'll save you the headache of an unwieldy bulleted list by telling you that the long and short of the sale is widely similar to other retail offerings: Discounted 360s and PS3s ($149 and $199 respectively), recent titles discounted by $10 to $30, etc. Check out the 12 page flier for complete details, and when you're tempted by these impressive discounts, remember how small and innavigable the average Gamestop is on a normal day, let alone on the busiest shopping day of the year.

Toys R' Us' Black Friday deals include $5 games, discounted systems

'Tis the season to be stampede trampled jolly, apparently, despite the fact that we're still cleaning the toilet paper out of our trees and we haven't even begun trying to decide between potatoes and stuffing. As department stores across the nation begin decking their halls with boughs of various things, they also begin preparing their tired, broken staff for the onslaught of panicked, sleep-deprived consumer mayhem awaiting them on November 25.

Toys R' Us, purveyor of battery/adult-assembly-requiring novelties since 1957, will be celebrating the fact that you've managed to survive another family gathering by offering buy-one-get-one-free deals on select DS and Wii titles, and buy-one-get-one-for-five-bucks deals on select console titles. They're also discounting the Kinect 360 bundle to $199, the Kinect itself to $99, and the PS3 to $199. Take a squint at the leaked flier here (and here) for specifics, and remember that great savings can be had as long as you're willing to sacrifice your humanity some shut-eye.

We're really pleased we don't work at Best Buy during the holiday season. We're sure it's a wonderful company to work for in general, but its Black Friday sales are almost as legendary as Wal-Mart's, though thankfully not as lethal (yet, fingers crossed).

Walmart Black Friday: Batman, Battlefield 3 $28 each, blue Wii $99

This year, you say, you're not going to watch retailer websites all Thanksgiving weekend for deals; you're not going to give in and drive to a store at midnight for cheap games. Walmart is the first to try to convince you otherwise, posting its Black Friday circular with discounts and exclusive offers it hopes will bring you back on the most dangerous shopping day of the year.

For $199, you have a choice of console bundles: an Xbox 360 4GB with Gears 3, 3 months of Live, and a $50 gift card; an Xbox 360 4GB with Kinect, Kinect Adventures, and a $50 gift card; or a 160GB PS3 with Ratchet & Clank All 4 One, LittleBigPlanet 2, and 3 months of Plus membership.

The blue Wii, announced in Europe as a Mario & Sonic bundle, will be released in America exclusively to Walmart ... at the crazy low price of $100.

If you're already set for systems, Walmart is also offering limited-time deals on games. From Thanksgiving night at 10pm through Friday, you can get recent releases like Batman: Arkham City, Battlefield 3, Gears of War 3, Infamous 2, and Call of Duty: Black Ops for $28. Dance Central 2, Kinect Sports Season Two, and Epic Mickey (among others) are $15. You can also get Yakuza 4 for ten damn dollars -- plus the cost of having to fight for your life at Walmart.

PSA: PAX Prime passes dwindling, only Friday and Sunday tickets left

PAX Prime 2011 organizers announced earlier today through Twitter that there were only 400 passes left for Friday access to the event. The 3-day and Saturday passes have already been tapped, while "a battery" of Sunday passes are still available -- the remaining one-day passes ($35 apiece) must be purchased through the official PAX site.

Penny Arcade marketing maestro Robert Khoo tells us that they've been given the green light to sell about 10 percent more badges than in prior years. It would appear that PAX East, despite welcoming 69,500 attendees in March, did not diminish interest in the Seattle show. At the current rate of ticket sales, the organizers guesstimate that PAX Prime passes will be completely sold out three months before the August 26–28 event takes place.
