Portal 2 dominates UK charts; Mortal Kombat maintains second place

Valve's Portal 2 and Warner Bros. Interactive's Mortal Kombat stayed locked in kombat for a second week at the top of the UK software sales chart. Portal 2 maintained its dominance for a second round, but opted not to perform a fatality on Mortal Kombat. Spectators of the tournament included Zumba Fitness, Operation Flashpoint: Red River and Call of Duty: Black Ops in spots three through five, respectively.

The holiday double-whammy in the UK last week (Easter Monday and the Royal Wedding) caused a disturbance in sales. The top ten consisted only of previously released titles, with Just Dance 2 doing the cha-cha back up the charts to re-enter in the 10 spot.

Chart-Track notes that Sega launched two new titles last week, with Virtua Tennis 4 charting at number 23 and Thor: God of Thunder missing the Top 40 entirely. Check out the usual suspects of chart toppers after the break.

Notes:
- Note that PC sales for Portal 2 do not include Steam sales which are not made public but likely in excess of 300k.
- In case you didn't feel like doing the math, Portal 2 edged Mortal Kombat on consoles in the Americas ever so slightly by 536,395 to 533,898. Factoring in European sales gives Mortal Kombat the edge 732k to 723k. Impressive by both nonetheless.
-The mediocre software lineup for the 3DS appears to be hurting sales as it drops below the regular DS for the first time since launch and has no games in the top 20 in the Americas, and sold fewer units than any other current handheld or console in Europe in this week.
- Conduit 2 debut sales are down almost 40,000 units from the first game's debut in 2009.
- Gears of War 3 pre-orders are more than four times higher than either Halo 3 or Call of Duty: Black Ops were 22 weeks before launch, although that likely has a lot to do with the beta that is available to those who pre-order Gears 3.
- Grand Theft Auto IV is the third PS3 game to sell 8 million copies worldwide (and the first non-Call of Duty game).

It's 'Portal Kombat' atop the UK charts

Portal 2 nabbed the top spot on the UK software sales chart last week, followed by Warner Bros. Interactive's Mortal Kombat reboot in second place. According to Chart-Track, Portal 2 was actually Valve's first ever all-formats chart topper -- the closest the company ever got to the crown was with The Orange Box, which reached third place.

Call of Duty: Black Ops "price promotions" in the region caused Activision's behemoth to jump back into the the top three, followed by last week's chart topper, Zumba Fitness, which still increased sales by 10 percent last week. The top five was rounded out by the blockheads of Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars.

Operation Flashpoint: Red River also had a solid debut, entering the charts in sixth place. Check out the full top ten after the break.

[PS3, X360] Review Roundup - Mortal Kombat GamePro - 4.5/5 - "Once again, Mortal Kombat isn't for everyone. If you think that the series is all about shock value, you probably won't see a lot of substance beyond the flash. Heck, it's a completely valid point that the series hasn't evolved very much since the 1990s. But for casual fans who want to have a fun bloodbath, plus the hardcore crowd that carries the franchise with its gaming dollar, this definitely won't disappoint you."

Game Informer - 9.5/10 - "This is the best Mortal Kombat yet. It didn’t blow my mind to the degree that Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 did back in the day, but when it comes down to the gameplay and longevity tied to it, this new entry towers above its 2D lineage."

IGN - 8/10 - "Mortal Kombat combines the novelty of extreme violence with a great fighting engine. My favorite moments with Mortal Kombat were always playing against a friend (Gamespy’s Ryan Scott is a beast), but I was disgusted by how unbalanced some of the single-player challenges are. Even still, Mortal Kombat is a great game. It’s not the most polished fighter out there, but it has a distinct flavor and it’ll be a hit at gamer get-togethers. I’ll leave you with some friendly advice: show your friends Noob Saibot’s default Fatality. It’s amazing."
