[PC, PS3, X360] Review Roundup - Dead Island: Riptide

[PC, PS3, X360] Review Roundup - Dead Island: Riptide
[Image: game-news-image-2013-7da3c849e0cbaccd920...fce738.jpg]Game Informer - 8/10 - "Riptide’s flaws are many, but they couldn’t hold me back from having a blast. Few games nail the visceral feel of melee combat and co-op fun like Dead Island. At its worst, an annoying hiccup breaks the immersion of the grizzly trek through a zombie-infested paradise. At its best, Riptide hits the same high notes as the original."

IGN - 7.2/10 - "I seriously love Dead Island Riptide for its satisfying zombie dismemberment and co-op, but technically, it's done nothing to build itself into a great game. Rather than fix the graphics and the performance problems that plagued the original two years ago, Techland slightly modified the setting and delivered a new character and more content. It’s a fun time, but there are no surprises or killer new features to make it an impressive package."

EGM - 6/10 - "Still, as much as I hated the glitches and lack of story development, there were times I couldn’t put Riptide down for hours upon hours. The sheer fun of the co-op zombie-slaughtering gameplay was strong enough to carry the burden. The fact that the rest of the game can’t live up to this promising foundation is nothing short of heartbreaking. It’s a reboot of a game that only came out two years ago. It’s a nightmarish expansion pack with only a handful of new gameplay elements and two new bugs for every one that’s been fixed. If this is your first experience with the franchise, then you might be able to look past some of the more glaring flaws, but if you played the first Dead Island, Riptide is a difficult game to recommend."

Destructoid - 5/10 - "Is Dead Island: Riptide a fun game? At times, yes. In terms of raw combat and power fantasy, it's just as good as Dead Island ... and it's just as bad at the same time. The bottom line is that there's no excuse for it not being superior. Being "just as good" isn't good enough, especially not when Dead Island had things on its side that Riptide doesn't. Those new to the series entirely will likely not notice the problems quite so much, and be as forgiving to it as newcomers were to Dead Island. While Riptide banks on you having loved the first, in actuality you have a lot more to gain if you've never touched it. If you played the first game, however, I'd recommend waiting for a real sequel, because Riptide fails to get away with pulling the same trick twice."

Giant Bomb - 2/5 - "The first Dead Island was long on good ideas but short on skillful execution, and while there's still a truly great game lurking in there somewhere, Riptide is not it. It's a shame Techland didn't take this opportunity to take a step back and figure out how to properly evolve this formula before iterating on the franchise again. Maybe that truly improved Dead Island will still come along someday, but in the meantime, Riptide feels like a game that didn't really need to be made."

[E3'13, Wii U, 3DS] Nintendo Reportedly Not Holding E3 Press Conference

You read that right, according to Iwata during Nintendo's Investor's meeting today, Nintendo is pulling out of the large E3 showcase, and is not going to have a press conference this year.

On the official translation, Iwata states:

Quote:At E3 this year, we are not planning to launch new hardware, and our main activity at E3 will be to announce and have people experience our software. Many people are certainly very interested in learning more about the Wii U titles that we are going to announce. We will use E3 as an ideal opportunity to talk in detail mainly about the Wii U titles that we are going to launch this year, and we also plan to make it possible for visitors to try the games immediately. As a brand new challenge, we are working to establish a new presentation style for E3.

First, we decided not to host a large-scale presentation targeted at everyone in the international audience where we announce new information as we did in the past.
Instead, at the E3 show this year, we are planning to host a few smaller events that are specifically focused on our software lineup for the U.S. market. There will be one closed event for American distributors, and we will hold another closed hands-on experience event, for mainly the Western gaming media. Also, I did not speak at last year’s presentation, and I am not planning to speak at these events at the E3 show this year either. Apart from these exclusive events for visitors, we are continuing to investigate ways to deliver information about our games directly to our home audience around the time of E3. We will share more information about them once they have officially been decided.

An unexpected turn from a company that desperately needs to show some significant software for their latest hardware. Do you think this decision is a good idea?

They'll no doubt have a special E3 Nintendo Direct stream that will be heavily promoted and probably broadcast. The only real difference is they won't be on stage at the conference. It probably won't be a huge deal, though I'll still be disappointed because I'm not overly interested in seeing what Microsoft or Sony have to say about their next gen hardware. Unless they have some games that tickle my fancy.

But Nintendo will still be at E3 anyway, there'll be plenty of coverage of their software and who's to say that they won't pop up in the various daily streams by G4, GameSpot, IGN, etc. to reveal games.

At first, this news disappointed me, but then it began to sink in that Nintendo's success with Nintendo Direct streams seems to negate the point of putting on a big E3 conference. Even if I'll miss them.

[PC, PS3, X360] Resident Evil creator laments lack of survival horror games

[PC, PS3, X360] Resident Evil creator laments lack of survival horror games

Fresh off of unveiling a bizarre trailer for his upcoming horror game The Evil Within, Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami revealed to IGN that his motivation for this title is the total lack of real survival horror games in the industry these days.

"Having the player pick up the controller and being genuinely able to say 'Wow, I haven't played a game this scary in ages!', that is what we are after. That is the main thing we are focused on," he said. "For me, personally, why I came back to survival horror is that survival horror as a genre is becoming all action now. There aren't any real survival horror games in the world right now. That is the biggest motivation for me."

Mikami is preaching to the choir in terms of survival horror fans, although fans of Amnesia and the upcoming game Outlast may have something to say about that. Regardless, it's an alarmingly under-represented genre right now and it is refreshing to see a person of influence attempting to fix that.

Mikami left Capcom after working on Resident Evil 4 and eventually formed new development studio Tango Gameworks, whose first game will be The Evil Within published by Bethesda. The Evil Within is expected to release sometime in 2014.
