Cabela's Survival: Shadows of Katmai opens up its manly heart
If we didn't know any better (and we generally don't), we'd think Cabela's has gone soft on us. A new trailer for Cabela's Survival: Shadows of Katmai has all the nasty beasties and ferocious growling that any hunting game should, but it also has a heart -- in the trailer, it appears our hunting hero saves a helpless woman from the dark and cold, um, shadows of Katmai, which is not a fantastical land east of Rivendell. The woman, however, is still pretty helpless, because this is a hunting game for real men, and it takes a certain amount of distressed-damsel-saving to maintain such an illustrious title.

Dreamworks Super Star Kartz Wii New Images
[PS3, X360] Final Fantasy XIII-2 is 90 percent complete, time-travel is totally in.
How far along is Final Fantasy Versus XIII? We don't know, but Final Fantasy XIII-2 is 90% complete!!
That's right, get excited folks. The game's final release date will be announced for Japan at the Tokyo Game Show later this week but is likely to be December for Japan and January for the rest of the world. Word has surfaced that gamers will have the option to raise up to 150 monsters as well as travel through time. The overall length of the game will be shorter than Final Fantasy XIII but it will feature a large number of new features.
A lot of the characters from the original will return in the sequel, and some will be playable at Tokyo Game Show later this week as well.
Are you excited for this sequel? Or would you rather Square Enix continue on elsewhere?

Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and more dated
Super Mario 3D Land will travel into America (and into your screen, thanks to the 3D effect) on November 13; it'll be followed by automotive adventure Mario Kart 7 on December 4, which now has a gyro-controlled first-person mode. You know, for the real feeling of being atop a tiny go-kart driving into a banana peel. Check out a trailer after the break.
Additionally, the Wii's Mario/Dragon Quest board game, Fortune Street, is teaching us Slime economics on December 5, and the DS Fossil Fighters sequel is coming November 14. What we won't see this year is Paper Mario for 3DS -- that, along with Luigi's Mansion 2, is slated for 2012.

As you know by now, Cole McGrath is joining the fray in the PlayStation Vita version of Street Fighter x Tekken. So why not celebrate by checking some more footage of him in action? You'll have to forgive the Street Fighter design he has been done up in as well.
Looking pretty good, here's hoping he'll be available on the PlayStation 3 version of the game as well.

NintendoWare Weekly: MotoHeroz, Mega Man
The single eShop release is also pretty cool: Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge. We've been waiting for another chance to buy this, ever since the GBA collection was canceled years ago.
WiiWare MotoHeroz (RedLynx, 1-4 players, 1,500 Wii Points): Wacky side-scrolling stunts in cartoon trucks!3DS eShop DSiWare Bridge (Cosmigo, 1 player, $4.99/500 DSi Points): The card game, not the structure.Defense of the Middle Kingdom (Aksys Games, 1 player, $4.99/500 DSi Points): Place soldiers to defend your territory against lines of incoming enemy soldiers.
[TGS '11, Vita] New Vita Details, Japan Release Date
The reason the DS and Advance gameboy lined sold so well was due to the fact that they were truly game-dedicated, portable handheld gaming machines. Take for instance the DSi. It had upwards of 10 hours in battery life, it fit easily in your pocket, the controls were smooth, it was a cinch to program for which made it heavenly for developers and provided more games for the consumer.
Now examine the current state of handhelds- 1/3 the battery life, gimmicks up the arse, a pitiful selection of games compared to what was previously offered, and too much bulk to ever being capable of fitting in your pocket. It's just a fail, up and down.
3DS needs to get better battery life, forget the extra circle pad and move on, drop the price another $50, and focus on steller 1st and third party software. If it does that, it'll do great. But, who knows when and if that will happen.
Likewise, the vita needs to get better battery life, get even a measly 8gb of on-board memory (which would NOT be that big of a deal), and stop focusing on all these "extra features" and more on pumping out some stellar titles. In a way, in its in the same boat as 3DS, except it costs $70 more, which currently gives it a huge disadvantage.
These manufacturers just don't get it: cheap, long-lastly, small, with great games. That's what a truly great handheld should be.

The Pirate Movie [VHS]
Having lived through this history, Melville doesn't treat it lightly; in Army of Shadows, the threat of death hangs over every scene like a shroud. Unfolding with flawless precision, the plot begins in 1942 and focuses on a small, secretive band of Resistance fighters led by Gerbier (Lino Ventura), whose intuitive sense of danger lends additional suspense to the film's dark, atmospheric study of grace under pressure. While working in the classical tradition of the Hollywood films he admired, Melville breaks from convention with lengthy, deliberately paced scenes in which tension builds to a subtle yet almost unbearable intensity. With the possible exception of a brief and wryly humorous scene involving Resistance leader (and future Prime Minister) Gen. Charles de Gaulle, every scene in Army of Shadows supports Melville's predominant themes of solitude and futility. Melville's visually and thematically bleak outlook may prove challenging for some, but Army of Shadows is remarkably beautiful in its own way, and it gains power with each additional viewing through flawless development of memorable characters played by a first-rate cast. Especially memorable is Simone Signoret as Gerbier's boldly pragmatic ally Mathilde, a woman in a war of men, with a tragic vulnerability that ultimately decides her fate. As intellectually stimulating as it is thrilling to experience, Army of Shadows represents the triumphant zenith of Melville's posthumous recognition as a world-class auteur. Thanks to the Criterion Collection, this masterpiece can now be widely appreciated, along with Criterion's previous DVD releases of Melville's earlier classics Bob Le Flambeur, Le Samourai, and Le Cercle Rouge. --Jeff Shannon

[X360] Review Roundup - Gears of War 3
1UP - A- - "As time goes on, it's clear that more developers will invest in this strategy of becoming a "mega-game" with a shelf-life that goes far beyond the game's release week. Call of Duty's doing it, Gears is following suit, Valve's got multiple titles including Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, and the upcoming Counter-Strike: GO that are doing the same thing. As amazing as all these games are, there just isn't enough time to invest and play all of them to their fullest. I'm not sure I'll be able to do that with Gears of War 3, but I know those of you that do choose to do so will have a blast."
Eurogamer - 8/10 - "Gears of War 3, then. In its multiplayer, all you could have reasonably asked for; in its visuals, new heights reached, while cracks of old age are papered over; in its story, a fitting conclusion; and in its campaign, though short of the consistent brilliance of its predecessor, a mostly rousing and memorable spectacle. So where do you go after "bigger, better and more badass?" You go to your fans and give them that which they crave. But now Epic has surely exhausted the formula in its current form - and, probably, on current-gen - the really exciting question is: where next?"
GameTrailers - 9.4/10 - "Gears of War 3 is a fantastic experience that's sure to make new fans with innovative new multiplayer options that give players plenty of room to experiment and find their niche. There are moments in every act of the campaign that would serve as grand finales in most other games, and it's done so well that it will make you want to play through the whole series all over again."
GameSpot - 9.5/10 - "Though it is an undeniably intense shooter, it scales very well to accommodate a range of skill levels. This is just one facet of the pervasive attention to detail that suffuses the whole game and gives you the sense that you are experiencing the pinnacle of the series. From the taut Versus competition to the two great cooperative modes, Gears of War 3 delivers immensely entertaining experiences on both sides of The Locust War. But the real triumph is the campaign, a masterpiece of exciting gameplay and emotional storytelling that stands head and shoulders above its predecessors. Even if you don't remember where you were on Emergence Day, this is one adventure you won't soon forget."

Square Enix head Yoichi Wada sees a gaming future in the clouds
First and foremost, he's all about the cloud. No, not that Cloud, but the one that allows for remote gaming. "I think the cloud is a real revolution," Wada explained. In his eyes, he's got a variety of electronics with "huge processing power" -- processing power that could be harnessed for new gameplay experiences. "If you could concentrate such processing power on the cloud, then there's going to be a huge paradigm shift," he added.
As for when this "paradigm shift" will happen, Wada is less clear. According to his presentation, he expects a move in that direction anywhere between now and 2015. In the meantime, he believes we're only just now experiencing the first in several new waves of change in the game industry.
While he's not sure, he posited that perhaps hologram-based gaming could be the next step. That may force gamers to return to dedicated game consoles -- it's innovation that's driving the market.
What are we taking from his guess? Wada has clearly seen the future. And it's holodecks.

[TGS'11, PS3] Ni no Kuni is venturing outside of Japan in early 2012
Ni no Kuni: Queen of the Holy White Ash is looking like it might be worth a look, if you can't remember it is the Level-5 developed RPG coming to PlayStation 3 (as well as a version for Nintendo DS) that is being created in a collaboration with the famous Studio Ghibli.
However, considering how Japan-centric this was all sounding it was looking uncertain as to whether it would venture outside of the home country. The game is being released in Japan on the 17th of November and now Level-5's president, Akihiro Hino, has confirmed that it will be released outside of Japan sometime in early 2012. Exciting news!
If you missed the trailer from a few weeks ago, here it is again.

[PC, PS3, X360] Homefront sequel coming in 2014 from Crytek?
"We see Homefront as a really strong universe that has a lot of potential and that has been expertly created and marketed by THQ," said Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli. Despite the first game being nearly universally panned by critics the title still managed to ship roughly 2.6 million copies by the end of March 2011.
Yerli also suggests that Crytek have been given a fair amount of creative freedom over development of the Homefront sequel, however it will take some time. The game is currently scheduled to launch on PC and consoles in THQ's fiscal 2014.
Are you interested to see what Crytek can do with Homefront?

Meh, FFX sucked before, and it'll suck now. Nothing changes in my opinion.
I don't see how they managed to take a game about swords, sorcery and high fantasy and turn it into Jpop singers in the ocean. I really, really don't. FF1 will always be one of my favorite games, and probably the only good Final Fantasy game I've ever played (aside from FF9). It had everything- great music, great albeit simplistc combat, etc.
They've continued to sodomize this series. It just needs to die. That, or give me an HD remake of FF1, similar to the PSP version.
It's not that I hated it. I enjoyed it at the time. But it sowed the seeds that become Final Fantasy XIII (walk forward for essentially the entire game until you get to the Calm Lands, throw some small optional quests at you before you continue walking forward).
The combat just bored me to tears. To go from the flowing combat that the ATB system provided for so long to the turn-based CTB was just tedious. Granted it made the game piss easy, so you could plan out your strategies perfectly by following the character flow chart on the side of the screen.
On the bright side, the game had such a great 3rd quarter with all the stuff with Auron, Sin, Tidus, Yuna, etc. So I forgive it for that.
But I will also resent it somewhat for what it lead the franchise to.
