"To be blunt, it just wasn't going to be good enough."

Those were the words of Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg a few months ago, referring to the surprising cancellation of upcoming blockbuster True Crime: Hong Kong earlier this year. Now rival publisher Square Enix is singing a much different tune, having just purchased the rights to the game. "When we first saw and got our hands on the game we fell in love with it," said Square Enix London Studios general manager Lee Singleton. "It's one of those games where you don't want to put the controller down; it's what we call 'sticky'."

Singleton continued to gush about the game, referring to the "incredible new game engine, rich new story with deep and complex characters, and gameplay features which have simply never been seen at this level in an open world game" that prompted Square Enix to "jump all over it." The game has continued to be developed by Vancouver-based studio United Front Games at a slower pace, however thanks to Square Enix's new support, the team working on the game will be brought back up to full capacity.

The game was originally slated for a November release date on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, but Square Enix is not ready to talk about release dates or platforms. A new title will also be required, since Square Enix does not own the True Crime IP.
