Despite the success of the recent Donkey Kong Country Returns, Nintendo have declared there are no current plans for a sequel. The news came from a panel held at GDC by Nintendo and Retro Studios which shed light on the game's journey from concept to creation.

In an interview with Game Informer the Nintendo producer, Kensuke Tanabe, said he had already turned down Retro when they approached Nintendo five years ago about tackling a Donkey Kong game. When Nintendo decided it was time to bring back the tie-wearing ape they approached Retro and asked if they were still interested in making the game.

The question is: will Nintendo create a sequel for Donkey Kong Country Returns? It seems silly not to, considering the games' success and critical acclaim. Tanabe had the following to say, "I wouldn't say we won't do a sequel [for Donkey Kong Country Returns], but we don't have anything planned at this time." Take that quote with a grain of salt though, because he also mentions they weren't going to do a sequel for Metroid Prime until Retro showed him the last scene in the game near the end of development. Plus, when has Nintendo ever turned away the idea of a sequel to a popular game.
