Nintendo: 'No plans' to localize Xenoblade, Last Story, or Pandora's Tower

by on Jun 29th 2011 10:30PM

On Sunday, Nintendo of America's Facebook page promised "more updates soon" regarding the status of Xenoblade, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower, the three Wii games that are the focus of the ongoing grassroots campaign for localization, called "Operation Rainfall."

On Monday, it posted a Super Mario 64 trivia question.

Then, today, it provided the response that fans were waiting for -- but not the one they wanted. "We never say 'never,'" the company stated, "but we can confirm that there are no plans to bring these three games to the Americas at this time." A brief response on Twitter thanked Operation Rainfall-ers for being "such incredible fans," but reiterated that "there continues to be no plans for NOA to release these 3 games right now."

Not that we want to give false hope regarding the actions of a company who is always pragmatic to the point of angering dedicated fans, but "no plans right now" is far from a death knell, especially for Nintendo. Some things that there were "no plans" for in America: the black Wii, the Classic Controller Pro, the Wii Sports Resort hardware bundle. Basically, there are "no plans" until the company decides to tell people its plans.

So even that denial leaves the door wide open for one of these games to be announced at a "Media Summit" or similar event in the fall. We're just mentioning that possibility, to be perfectly honest, so that we can say we totally called it should that happen.

Wii developer Red Fly Studio lays off 30

by on Jul 1st 2011 11:30AM

Sad news from Austin developer Red Fly Studio, which confirmed to GameSpot that it unexpectedly had to terminate approximately 30 employees on June 22. CEO Dan Borth explained, "The reduction of staff was a response to a large high-profile project that was, to our surprise, reevaluated and then canceled."

Red Fly is perhaps best known for its Wii versions of licensed games that are often as well -- if not better -- received than their 360 and PS3 counterparts (as was the case with the recent Thor). Here's hoping those affected land on their feet.

NintendoWare Weekly: Kirby's Dreamland, Final Fantasy III

by on Jun 30th 2011 10:00AM

One game each on two Virtual Consoles feels like a windfall, especially when both games are worth the time it takes to play them. The Wii's Virtual Console brings us Final Fantasy III, the SNES role-playing game that introduced us to Terra, Shadow, Kefka, and other beloved characters, while the 3DS Virtual Console brings Kirby's Dream Land, which introduced us to ... Kirby.

Head past the break to see all of this week's releases, including a WiiWare game published by peripheral company PDP. Weird.
WiiWare Big Town Shoot Out (Performance Designed Products, 1-4 players, 500 Wii Points): Wild-West themed arcade shooting.Virtual Console Final Fantasy III (SNES, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): This is the one that was released here as Final Fantasy III on SNES -- it was called Final Fantasy VI in Japan. It's the one with Espers and MagiTek and stuff.3DS eShop Kirby's Dream Land (Game Boy) (Nintendo, 1 player, $3.99): The very first Kirby game features a lot of familiar elements, but not the "copy" ability yet. Basically, Kirby has an eating disorder.DSiWare Moto eXtreme (Chillingo, 1 player, $7.99/800 DSi Points): Do awesome bike stunts, and design tracks from which to do those stunts with the stylus. The Lost Town - The Dust (Circle Entertainment, 1 player, $4.99/500 DSi Points): A military facility explodes in an isolated small town, and you must find survivors and protect them from mysterious creatures while you await rescue.Boardwalk Ball Toss (Skyworks Interactive, 1 player, $1.99/200 DSi Points): Try to knock over pins. Hopefully this isn't as unfair as the real carnival game.Hearts Spades Euchre (Cosmigo, 1-4 players, 500 DSi Points): Hearts, Spades, and Euchre.

Good news, sports fans. The publishing rights to Psychonauts have reverted back to Double Fine. As a result of this, they will now benefit from all future sales once some final deals have been worked out.

Tim Schafer has confirmed that this doesn't immediately mean that they'll be working on a Psychonauts 2 any time soon, but does mention that once all of the deals have been made they have some "fun announcements to be made."

Would you like to see a sequel to Psychonauts sometime down the road?
