Layton's Unwound Future and Kirby's Epic Yarn join Nintendo's million-seller club
The Wii-llion seller list for the nine-month period featured several Mario and Wii [Fill in Blank] games, but Donkey Kong Country Returns was also a popular pick, moving a bananas 4.21 million units since its late-November release. Additionally, Kirby's Epic Yarn managed to stitch up sales of 1.4 million units in two and a half months at retail.
Sitting on top of DS and Wii million-sellers for the period were Pokemon Black/White with 5.3 million copies sold (and it's not even out in North America and Europe yet!) and Super Mario Galaxy 2 with a hearty 6.2 million units in mushroom-fueled sales, respectively.

Punjab, Haryana seek WII help to tame the big cat - Indian Express
Leopard management plan on anvil; Punjab to do wild cat census, while Haryana issues advisory in Mewat region
Leopards straying into Punjab from Himachal and into Haryana from Rajasthan have made the governments of both states sit up and take notice.
With neither a precedence to follow nor expertise to tackle the problem, wildlife departments of both states have now sought help of the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehra Dun, to draft a leopard management plan. Besides, Punjab is planning a census of the wild cat, while Haryana has issued advisory in the Mewat region.
Death of two leopards, one in Ropar and the other in Hoshiarpur, in the last one and a half month had alarmed the authorities. Chief Wildlife Warden of Punjab Gurbaaz Singh says he has suggested to the government that before embarking on a plan it is important to first find the number of animals that have strayed into Punjab. ?For this, we have planned to undertake a census of the animal this year. The exercise will also help us zero in on the areas where the number is more,? he adds.
Analyst Says Wii 2 Cannot Survive
Nintendo struck gold with the Wii, surprising many and blowing away everyone else. But can it hit the lottery twice in a row? One of the leading video game analysts says there's no chance.
Michael Pachter, one of the most influential voices in the industry, says Nintendo needed to refresh the Wii at least two years ago. If it introduces an incremental upgrade now, it will be too late.
When the Wii came out, the gaming industry was very different. No one was buying console games digitally. No one ever thought they'd need more than 100 GB in their console's hard drive, and the idea of being able to update any problem in the console or game was completely unheard of.
Pachter says Nintendo needs to appreciate that. It can no longer put out a product that doesn't live up to today's standards. The Wii has been grandfathered in to the technology that now encircles the PS3 and Xbox 360 - like online networking and digital proliferation - but a new console has no chance of survival.
"Nintendo can't let Microsoft have a 20 million install base of next-gen consoles and they're still in the last generation. I said in '08 [the Wii HD] was coming, because I really thought the time was right [...] 2010, I think, was the absolute last Christmas they could afford to wait. They had to do it and they didn't. Now, I think it's too late," said Pachter on GTTV's Bonus Round.
"I think they boxed themselves in. No matter what they do, it won't be as successful as the Wii," said Pachter.

Nintendo's Wii inspires series of off-Broadway plays- Destructoid
Wii Tennis. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Alien Monster Bowling League. Let’s Tap. You know them as games for Nintendo’s Wii console, but they’re also the inspiration for some of New York City’s most talented playwrights.
This week, Ars Nova, a collaborative not-for-profit off-Broadway theater company, opened The Wii Plays, a night of original short plays inspired by Wii titles. Note the “inspired by,” as that’s significant -- these aren’t adaptations of your favorite Wii titles, although at least one play does feature actors dressed up as Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario.
Instead, the Ars writers -- a diverse team of talent that cycles yearly -- used game titles, and sometimes themes, as a jumping-off point. This isn’t their first foray into using pop culture and technology to inspire: last year it ran a series inspired by Craigslist’s “Missed Connections,” and previously was sparked by Wikipedia entries and even iTunes.
“We found [that the] idea of technology was really connecting to the pop culture,” Ars Nova’s artistic director, Jason Eagan, told me. “[It] made it not just another night of short plays.”
When the concept of The Wii Plays came around between the group for consideration, it was “a resounding ‘yes’” from everyone involved.
“I think the videogame world has so much creativity and there’s so much for a writer that they felt very open to stretch their creativity,” Eagan explains.
It’s interesting to hear how each of the writers handled the material: some went for a more literal approach, and others came to the challenge with more broad strokes. “Wii Tennis,” for example, finds two ex-lovers in a chance meeting at a coffee shop. Old wounds open and tempers flare, and things take a decidedly dramatic turn when they rip off their clothes to reveal tennis attire, each of them brandishing a Wii Tennis racket peripheral. As they quarrel, sounds ripped from Wii Sports’ tennis provide the soundtrack, and the footage of the game itself is used as the backdrop.
Another, based on Sega’s Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, actually finds two actors literally playing as the titular icons. It seems Sonic isn’t doing so well in the Winter Games, getting beaten by Nintendo’s plumber. Ever the good guy, Mario attempts to raise Sonic’s spirits by trying to persuade him to team up and become his bobsled partner.
“There’s not an Ars Nova kind of writer,” Eagan tells me, “but actually we’re celebrating their differences and writers and their approach, and I think that comes through a lot in this.”
Add in a fully accessible bar, playable Wii game kiosks for the audience to enjoy before the plays start, and a live band (the Brooklyn-based indie group Super Mirage), and it sounds like a hell of a celebration indeed.
With videogames colliding with this more traditional art form, you may be interested in knowing where Eagan sits on the “videogames as art” debate. He admits with a nervous chuckle that he’s “not well-versed in the argument,” but praises their design and advancing technology.
“I think it would be ridiculous to ignore it as an art form, seeing how it has the impact that it does, especially [on] younger generations, who I think are so influenced and inspired by that world,” he says, “so it feels a little naive to ignore it as an art form.”
If you’re in the NYC area, check out how some artists were inspired by videogames with Ars Nova and The Wii Plays. With help from the National Endowment for the Arts, it’s one of Ars’ longest running shows, from February 1 through February 12. More info can be found on Ars Nova’s official website.
