Next round of EA server culling includes Army of Two, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat

by on Jul 14th 2011 9:00AM

As boys turn to men, we know it's hard to say goodbye to yesterday, but time marches on and Electronic Arts has server power bills it's no longer keen on paying. EA has decided to shut down online functionality for several titles, including Army of Two, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat and Need for Speed: Most Wanted, as of August 11.

EA's explanation is that games being shut down represent "fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles," and that its server teams would rather "focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99% of customers playing our more popular games." Find the list of titles being disconnected from the internet after the break.

Bobby Kotick talks Guitar and DJ Hero, the fall and the coming rise

by on Jul 23rd 2011 4:30PM

Bobby Kotick earned more than $4.4 billion through Activision Blizzard last year, which means his business success is obvious -- but so are his failures. In an interview with Forbes, Kotick described the downfall of the Guitar Hero and DJ Hero franchises with the kind of detail that can only come from lying awake every night for four years straight, obsessing over what went wrong.
"So we bought the company, and after a few iterations of the game it became one of the most successful games of all time," Kotick said. "And then we didn't really take the time that we usually take to understand audience behavior.... But we created this critically acclaimed, highly rated game -- and these are the hardest failures, when you put your heart and soul into it and you deliver an extraordinarily well received game, and nobody shows up to buy it. So that's what happened with DJ Hero. At the same time we were so excited about going down this new direction with DJ Hero, I think we abandoned a bit of the innovation that was required in the Guitar Hero franchise.

"And so it was the double whammy of DJ Hero was unsuccessful, and then Guitar Hero became unsuccessful because it didn't have any nourishment and care."

Kotick said ending the music-game franchises was a smart move, but that doesn't mean they'll be gone forever. "So we're going to take the products out of the market, and we're not going to tell anybody what we're doing for awhile, but we're going to stop selling Guitar Hero altogether," Kotick said. "And then we're going to go back to the studios and we're going to use new studios and reinvent Guitar Hero. And so that's what we're doing with it now."

Kotick promised Activision Blizzard listens to its consumers and will use fan input to innovate Guitar and DJ Hero. That Kotick plans to resurrect the series must mean some fans, somewhere, are inputting something other than "Kill it, Kotick."

Stellar: Incubus track pack heading to Rock Band in August

by on Jul 18th 2011 5:45PM

Please, pardon us while we potentially spoil some of the Rock Band DLC offerings for August, but Incubus manager Steve Rennie already went ahead and did that on his Twitter feed. Responding to a fan request for info on Incubus tracks coming to Rock Band 3, Rennie replied, "August. 5 tracks 'Megalomaniac,' 'Pardon Me,' 'Stellar,' 'WYWH,' 'Adolescents.'"

Harmonix weighed in on its own forums, which pegged the DLC as a three track pack instead, including "Adolescents," "Pardon Me," and "Wish You Were Here." The post added, "Not sure where those other two tracks came from (we may be talking with them about licensing them) but they're not part of the pack in August and they're not on the DLC spreadsheet in the near future."

Fans will no doubt be happy to hear the news, as this will (bizarrely) be the first Incubus track pack for a Rock Band title. Previously, only "Drive" was available through Guitar Hero: World Tour., and "Dig" is in Lego Rock Band (exportable). We've reached out to Harmonix for pricing info and release date, but expect it to be around $5.50, given past pricing for three-song track packs.

[Thanks Lewis and Sean!]

If you are going along to Comic Con this year and are interested in doing something not comic-related then Ubisoft are bringing along some games to show off.

They will be showcasing Rabbids: Alive & Kicking, Just Dance 3, and Rayman: Origins at the popular convention. Comic Con runs from July 21st til 24th and Ubisoft will also be holding a special Assassin's Creed panel called 'Assassin's Creed: The Creation of a Universe', which will include a sneak-peek at the upcoming animated Assassin's Creed short.

Are you excited to see more on any of the previously mentioned games? Or are you less than interested in Ubisoft's offerings?

[PS3, X360] Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 brings new characters, November release

[PS3, X360] Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 brings new characters, November release
It had been bubbling under the surface for awhile, but now it appears that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom has finally been confirmed. As well as confirmation, we have also learned that the game will bring the total roster of playable characters up to 50.

It will also be a newly re-balanced release of the game that provides accessible depth for both newcomers and veterans alike as well as coming with enhanced modes, such as the heavily requested Spectator Mode. Capcom believe this release will satisfy fans, even the ones who were a little disappointed by the original release.

The new characters include six new Marvel characters and six new Capcom characters. Capcom originally only announced four characters (including Strider, Firebrand, Ghost Rider and Hawkeye) but images that were dug out of Capcom's database seemingly announced the full twelve characters (unless Capcom is playing a hoax). So without further delay, here are the characters.

The game will release in November for the price of $39.99, so what do you think? Have Capcom enticed you enough to take more of your money?

Now all they need to do is show us single players some love

aint paying a lot for a game thats basically to be played online

Quote:Pity Capcom couldn't have just started with this.
Its called the Capcom way.

Why have a fighting game with everything everyone wants when its more profitable to release a update in a few months time.

Jack of spades. COME ON JACK OF SPADES!!

I do play single player ones.
Its just recent Capcom offerings have had bugger all for the soloer

Look at Alpha 3.
It was like HOLYCRAPMODES!!!THEREEVERYWHERE!!
Look at newer ones. Your lucky to get a survival mode.
I will play it in verses mode. Only if its head to head, none of this online bollocks.
Mortal Kombat 9 got it right, to bad the fighting was arse

I spent a lot of time on Alpha 3 doing the wonderful World tour mode (done it all with Dan now thats a challenge).
All im really saying is for them to think of putting at least a bit off effort into putting content on the disc (no a trials mode dont count)

Even Capcom vs SNK on the Neogeo pocket had a s*** ton of modes and a load of characters

A survival mode is always handy.

EVEN GAROU MARK OF WOLFS HAD ONE!
And it was a bloody good one.

think with Rival schools (and Street fighter EX) they no longer own the characters.
Its a shame as theres some bloody great ones in EX

I know there catering for those that play it online, but as some found out (that owned a PS3) with no online, theres nothing apart from a shallow arcade mode, with a cheap boss at the end.
SNK get the chap bosses idea, but fill there games with other things
