January NPD: Black Ops 2 tops, DmC: Devil May Cry debuts in sixth place

Black Ops 2, Far Cry 3 and Just Dance 4 were January's best-selling games, according to NPD sales data, with Capcom's rebooted DmC: Devil May Cry sliding in at sixth place. As per usual, the full list of the month's top 10 best-selling games can be found after the break.
During the five-week period running from December 30, 2012, through February 2, 2013, the combined might of the video game sales industry's physical retail channels earned a total of $834.7 million, a nine percent year-over-year increase as compared with January 2011's performance. This is the first time the industry has reported an annualized overall increase in sales in at least twelve months.
2013's "January" is five weeks, as opposed to the traditional four, for calculation purposes. The NPD Group makes this adjustment once every six or seven years to combat data drift in its reporting, much in the same way our calendar system implements a Leap Day to correct for discrepancies between the number of days in the year, and the length of Earth's orbit.
Therefore, January's year-over-year increase is actually the direct result of the extended recording period. If January's overall results are "corrected" for the additional time, the industry's physical retail performance is actually down by 13 percent, rather than up by nine. Regardless, hardware sales in general were responsible for $205 million of the period's total invoice, up four percent since last year without corrections and down 17 percent with.
Once again, the Xbox 360 was the best-selling piece of overall hardware, as it has been for the last 18 months. January was also the console's twenty-fifth month as the leading console.
Accessories sales saw the largest development in sales, increasing by 30 percent pre-corrections and four percent post – $256.6 million in January of this year versus $198.1 million last year. Meanwhile, Software sales saw the smallest pre-correction annualized jump with $373.1 million for the period, which is just one percent above the segment's earnings in 2011. After corrections, that difference drops to a 19 percent year-over-year loss. Four new Skylanders domains: Kaos Alliance, Nano, Super, Swap Force

The new domain registrations, uncovered by Fusible, went live on January 30 and are SkylandersKaosAlliance.com, SkylandersNanoForce.com, SkylandersSuperForce.com and SkylandersSwapForce.com. We detect a hint of classic Power Rangers spin-off names within these domains, but no more information about them exists so far.
Activision registered the Skylanders Giants domains at the beginning of 2012, and that timing seemed to work out pretty well.

Hit List Q&A: Warren Spector, Creative Director and Founder of Junction Point

After seven years with Origin, Warren did a brief stint with LookingGlass Technologies before founding Ion Storm's Austin, Texas studio in 1997. At Ion Storm, he produced and directed the award-winning, genre-bending Deus Ex. He later oversaw development of Deus Ex: Invisible War, released in 2003, and Thief: Deadly Shadows, released in 2004. That year, he left Ion Storm to found Junction Point Studios, developing concepts for a variety of video game and motion picture partners before being acquired, in 2007, by The Walt Disney Company. There he directed Disney Epic Mickey, released in 2010. A sequel, Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, was released in November 2012.
In his forthcoming 2013 D.I.C.E. Summit session, Warren will be speaking on "Hey, You kids! Get Outta My Yard! or The Graying of Gaming."
"Used to be, games were largely the domain of youngsters - kids played them and 'kids' (relatively speaking) made them," Spector says. "Nowadays, things are different. Gamers are everywhere, coming in all ages and genders, and developers have grown up, too. In this talk, I will address the impact of aging on gamers, on developers and on our medium. How does the graying of gaming affect Game Content, Player Commitment, Design Philosophy, Gaming Platforms, Mainstream Media Interactions and, generally speaking, The Future. This talk will be a personal look backwards and forwards that will, I hope, offer something for kids and adults, boys and girls, men and women, whatever their relationship may be with games as pastime, as art or as business."
What games are you playing right now?
I'm in the middle of The Walking Dead from Telltale. I'm also playing Dishonored and Papo & Yo and finishing up Rayman on the Vita. And I'm always playing stuff like Drop 7 and Can't Stop on my iPhone. (Man, how about THAT for some variety? That's what gaming's all about these days.)
What future release are you most looking forward to?
I'm a huge fan of Victoriana and the kind of storytelling in Bioshock, so Bioshock Infinite is pretty high on my list. Grand Theft Auto V looks unbelievable – I'll play that despite my misgivings about the content in the GTA series. And, while it isn't exactly a future release, I still haven't played Unfinished Swan – gotta grab that soon.
What about a niche game that impressed you with its sheer innovation or fun factor?
I hate to be so "me-too" with my answer, but Journey is a heck of an accomplishment. I mean, getting something that different made nowadays? That's something ...
What literature has had the biggest impact on your creative process?
I'm not sure this is such a good thing, but I doubt I'd be doing what I do if I hadn't discovered science fiction and fantasy at an early age. No Heinlein or Tolkien and there's no me, professionally, at least. Like most game developers of my generation, I got into this because I loved reading about aliens and spaceships and monsters and myths. My taste in literature has broadened over the years, but that formative stuff was critical. I'm not sure how or if some of the stuff I read impacts my process, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Walter Tevis and Jack Finney, two of my favorite authors.
Finney is about the best writer of time travel stories ever, and I adore time travel stories – have to make a time travel game someday! And Walter Tevis wrote two books that just blow my mind – The Hustler and Queen's Gambit, both of which have some relevance to gaming fans in their depiction of the art associated with pool and chess. Man, I sound lowbrow! Maybe I should say something about Dickens or Joyce or something ...
What two movies or TV shows influenced your creative process the most?
That's easy – The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad and King Kong. Give me a third title, and I'll throw in Sleeping Beauty. Give me a fourth and it's Blade Runner.
Ray Harryhausen's Sinbad picture was the first film I remember seeing. I was two years old when it came out and it changed my life forever. I had nightmares about dragons and stuff for years – and loved it! If not for Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, I doubt I'd be a game developer today.
I saw King Kong (the 1933 version) when I was about three, on TV. Talk about a nightmare-inducing experience! I was in love with dinosaurs and fantasy and King Kong combined them both! Sleeping Beauty was another nightmare-causer. Guess I liked nightmares! Sleeping Beauty I saw when I was about four and I remember thinking how different, how magical, it looked compared to anything else in my life – and it had a witch who turned into a scary fire breathing dragon. What's not to like, when you're four?
As far as Blade Runner goes, is there a game developer who WASN'T influenced by it? The way it looked and sounded ... it's believable setting ... the darkness of its future vision ... Look, my first dungeon master, when I started playing D&D was Bruce Sterling, one of the fathers of the cyberpunk SF movement. I was primed to fall in love with Blade Runner!
As far as TV goes, I watch a TON of it and I'm no ashamed to admit it. I wish more developers would acknowledge how incredible the game design is on some reality shows, notably Survivor – we can all learn a lot from that show ... And I've long believed that developers need to stop thinking of movies as their model and turn to an episodic TV model – I did a lot of writing about the old sitcom Happy Days, when I was in grad school, and that kind of serial narrative approach seems ideally suited to gaming – I don't get why more people, other than Telltale, aren't playing in that space ...
When you're daydreaming about the "next big thing", what are you listening to?
Musically, I'm drawn to show tunes. I know, I know ... It's weird. But that's what I listen to. I love me some Broadway. If you stretch the definition of "daydreaming" a bit, you'll most often hear me listening to audiobooks and lectures from The Teaching Company. I love hearing smart people talk about psychology ... mythology ... that sort of thing. If you want a real treat, grab any course by Robert Sapolsky or Elizabeth Vandiver. Trust me. You'll make better games.
What app is making it tough to put down your phone or tablet?
Drop 7, Drop 7, Drop 7. I love-hate that game. If I could bottle whatever addictive quality that thing has ... the hold it has on me that keeps me playing every day, year after year ... If I could do that, I'd be a wealthy man! Beyond games, I don't know what I'd do without Evernote. I pretty much live in Evernote. When I'm not playing Drop 7, of course!
What social game has you hooked?
None. I hate those things. Can't remember the last time I played a game on Facebook or even loaded up an MMO. Somebody make a good one – at least a different one - and maybe I'll try again. Maybe.
What does your home gaming setup consist of?
My home gaming setup consists of everything. Well, almost – I realized the other day that I no longer own a PC! I have a Mac desktop and a Mac laptop and an iPad, an iPhone 5, a Kindle Fire. My 360, my PS3 and my Wii are connected to a 65 inch plasma TV and a pretty killer sound system. Oh, yeah, I have a Vita and a 3DS XL that get quite the workout. I have an OnLive box. Need to get a Wii U. If you make games for a living, you pretty much need to own every viable platform.
What's your favorite new gadget?
I'm tempted to say my Lytro camera (which lets you change the focus after you take a picture) or my Sifteo cubes (which combine electronic and toy play in cool ways) or my 3DS (stereoscopic 3D without glasses? Seriously?), but really it has to be my iPhone. I know it's not so "new," but it's still life-changing. I was at a University of Texas basketball game the other night that was kind of dull, so I stuck some earbuds in my ears, cranked up NBA Game Time and watched a live broadcast of a Knicks game while I was attending a live game. That was weird, but unique. I'm never out of touch, never without entertainment, never alone or without a book or game, never without whatever information I need or access to shopping opportunities. Like I said, life-changing.

Boston Festival of Indie Games returns in September

Last year, Festival had attendees voted on their favorite showcase games and handed out prizes in five categories. Games don't have to be from the Boston area, but can come from anywhere as long as developers attend the show to demo it (and, from the look of those pictures, drink if they're of age). Categories include digital, board and card games, and the festival is live-action roleplay friendly. It doesn't appear that game registration for this year has opened yet, but when it does it will be at the Boston Festival of Indie Games site.

Rumor: Disney shutters Epic Mickey developer Junction Point

We've reached out to Disney for an official statement.
Industry veteran George Broussard notes, "The Junction Point rumors have been circulating a while. Warning signs when you give employees 2 months off after shipping."
Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two was not a critical nor financial win for Disney, reportedly selling 270,000 copies in North America by the end of 2012.
Update: Roberts Space Industries has deleted its previous tweet stating it has "no insider info" on Junction Point's status. Oddly, the site it sources as having provided the info links back to the exact same tweet from RSI regarding the shut down. Disney corporate communications has still not responded to numerous requests for comment.
Update 2: Disney confirms closure.
XSEED erecting Pandora's Tower for Wii in NA this spring
Fan Favorite Wii-Exclusive Action RPG to be Released for the North American Market
Torrance, Calif., (January 16, 2013) – XSEED Games, an independent-minded publisher, today announced they have come to an agreement with Nintendo that will bring the highly anticipated action role-playing title, Pandora's Tower™, exclusively to Wii™ in Spring 2013. Developed in Japan by Ganbarion, Pandora's Tower takes the classic fairytale theme of a maiden in distress and adds a violent twist, with the protagonist setting out to slay over a dozen giant monsters and collect their flesh in order to free his beloved from an evil curse. The agreement with Nintendo grants XSEED Games exclusive publishing rights to Pandora's Tower in North America.
"It's fantastic to be bringing such a highly-anticipated title like Pandora's Tower to such a vocal fan base," said Shinichi Suzuki, President and CEO of XSEED Games. "North American gamers have been very patient in waiting for this game to be released, and we're confident they will be pleased when they get their hands on the title."
A tale of unfortunate circumstances, Pandora's Tower opens in the Kingdom of Elyria, where an unassuming singer named Elena succumbs to a wretched curse during a festival performance. Bearing an arcane mark on her back, she starts transforming into a savage monster, causing the town guards to attempt to kill her in order to prevent it. A young ex-mercenary named Aeron, whose heart has forever been pledged to Elena, whisks her away in the nick of time – and with the help of a mysterious witch named Mavda, he learns what must be done to avert her wretched fate. He must descend into The Scar, a massive chasm tied down by twelve chains connected to a floating island in its center, atop which sit thirteen interconnected towers. There, he must use his sword and a sacred chain to battle his way through each tower and extract the flesh of the boss "masters" that dwell within, which Elena must consume in order to reverse her ongoing transformation. But the clock is ticking! The longer Aeron takes to vanquish each beast, the less human Elena becomes, affecting her character and the game's final outcome in a profound manner. Time is of the essence...
Pandora's Tower was developed in Japan by Ganbarion in conjunction with Nintendo, exclusively for Wii. The game will be published by XSEED Games in North America in Spring 2013. XSEED Games will release more product updates in the coming months.

Nintendo now projects a figure of 4 million for Wii U by the end of its fiscal year on March 31, down from the 5.5 million the company predicted in October 2012. 3DS shipments are now expected to hit 15 million for the year, down from initial projections of 18.5 million.
Nintendo has now shifted 29.84 million units of its handheld since launch. Meanwhile, the Wii's life-to-date figures are up to 99.38 million, with 3.53 million units shipped across the nine month period.
Regards software, Nintendo shifted 11.69 million Wii U games since the console's launch on November 18, The best-performing games were the bundled-in Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U, coming in at 2.33 million and 2.01 million respectively.
On the 3DS front, Nintendo shipped 39.56 million units of the handheld across the nine months. Pokémon Black/White 2 soared to a total of 7.63 million on the back of almost 3 million sales in Japan alone, while New Super Mario Bros. 2 is at 5.96 million. Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two life-to-date sales 529K in US

Disney's multiplatform Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two sold 529,000 units over November and December of 2012 in the United States, according to new data provided by the NPD group. Joystiq was also informed that sales of Epic Mickey 2, plus Nintendo 3DS title Disney Epic Mickey: The Power of Illusion, across North America reached 695,000 units over the same period. An unconfirmed report previously pegged Epic Mickey 2's sales at 270,000 copies.
Disney Epic Mickey developer Junction Point Studios was closed today, with the House of Mouse noting it was due to an ongoing effort to address fast-evolving gaming platforms and the marketplace.
Junction Point was the last studio standing of Disney's previous attempt to break into the triple-A "core" market, with many studios lost along the way, including the critically acclaimed Pure and Split/Second developer Black Rock Studios. Disney has readjusted its sights and is now developing Disney Infinity.
