Gold Nunchuk back in stock at Club Nintendo

by Writer RSS on Nov 26th 2012 3:30PM

Those 160 Coins you got for registering a Wii U on Club Nintendo can now go toward an accessory for the console. The Gold Nunchuk quickly went out of stock upon its first appearance in August, and is now back in stock for 900 Coins.

Perhaps having a cool gold Nunchuk would help alleviate the momentary irritation of having to get out four Nunchuks to play Metroid Blast with friends in Nintendo Land, and then immediately disconnect them to play anything else.

X-Arcade sticks it to Black Friday with two discounted arcade platforms

by Writer RSS on Nov 17th 2012 3:00PM

XArcade sticks it to Black Friday with two discounted arcade paltformsX-Arcade, maker of American-style arcade cabinet control arrays, has discounted its Dual Joystick and Tankstick + Trackball platforms by $30 and $40 respectively, bringing the price of in-home 80's arcade realism down to $100/$160. That is, so long as you insert coin (get it?) before midnight on Sunday, November 25.

Each platform comes equipped with two bat-top style joysticks, 16 regular buttons and two first/second-player buttons. The Tankstick + Trackball configuration, as you may have guessed, also comes with a Missile Command-esque trackball installed in the middle. Both sticks connect to PC/Mac/Linux boxes through USB and to game consoles via optional adapters.

[Multi] Bioware asks: Should Mass Effect 4 be a prequel or sequel?

[Multi] Bioware asks: Should Mass Effect 4 be a prequel or sequel?
Bioware's Casey Hudson, creator of the Mass Effect Universe and Executive Producer on all three games, has taken to Twitter to ask fans for feedback on where Mass Effect should go next. More specifically, whether Mass Effect 4 should be take its place as a sequel, or set prior to the existing trilogy.

"Parsing through your thoughts on the next #ME game," he wrote. "Would you be more interested in a game that takes place before the trilogy, or after?"

The fact that Bioware has yet to settle on a time-setting for Mass Effect 4 suggests that development of the game is still very much in its infancy.

"While [Mass Effect 4] will be very respectful of the heritage built over the course of the first three games, with the original trilogy now concluded and the switch over to a new engine, we are exploring new directions, both on the gameplay and story fronts," BioWare Montreal studio director Yanick Roy said earlier this month.

"You can still expect the pillars the franchise is known for to be fully intact though, including diverse alien races, a huge galaxy to explore, and of course rich, cinematic storytelling."

BioWare wants your help deciding. So, what's your answer?

[Wii U] Review Roundup - Nintendo Land

[Wii U] Review Roundup - Nintendo Land
[Image: game-news-image-2012-e294f68a1b208af3b07...ae2dc5.jpg]IGN - 8.7/10 - Nintendo Land is a brilliant show of what Nintendo’s new console and tablet controller are capable of, and has far more depth and content then you’d expect from a mini-game collection. The attractions are ridiculously fun and offer plenty of variety, whether you’re flying solo or entertaining a group. Throw in high scores to best, gold trophies to earn, stamp achievements to collect and tons of Plaza decorations to unlock, and what you’ve got is an experience that must not be missed, and probably the best show of Wii U available at launch.

GameSpot - 8/10 - But like Nintendo Land's use of familiar properties, this bevy of prizes to collect wouldn't be worth much if it wasn't supported by good gameplay. Thankfully, it is. Nintendo Land isn't just a fine showcase of the Wii U's capabilities, though it certainly is that. It's also a great game in its own right, and particularly if you have friends or family members with whom you can play all of the multiplayer attractions, it's a great way to start getting a lot of enjoyment out of the new console immediately.

Polygon - 8/10 - This final view of a trinket-covered Nintendo Land is a metaphor for the game. It's massive, but disposable; grotesque, yet striking; commodified, but affecting. Not everything in Nintendo Land works, but what it does well, no one else is even trying. I'm also describing Nintendo itself.

Joystiq - 4/5 - Nintendo Land, then, is inherently targeted at a much narrower audience than its pack-in predecessor, Wii Sports. Whether you think that's a problem in the long term depends on how loudly you've decried Nintendo over the last six years for "abandoning" its core. In the short term, it's a great party game for people in that audience – like the ones reading this website.

Destructoid - 7/10 - Those unconvinced about what the Wii U can do would benefit from finding themselves a way of trying out Nintendo Land. It manages to do a lot with the system without, I believe, even scratching the surface of what more focused and dedicated videogames could achieve. It's a game meant to excite you more about the system you just purchased, and that is what it does. Well worth checking out, at any rate.

[Wii U] Review Roundup - New Super Mario Bros. U

[Wii U] Review Roundup - New Super Mario Bros. U
[Image: game-news-image-2012-20c03e18776d3786a4b...5813e1.jpg]IGN - 9.1/10 - Nintendo’s approach here strikes a great balance in all areas, ranging from its difficulty to design to enemies and bosses. And for everything the basic Story Mode does right – and that’s a considerable amount – the Challenge Mode will be remembered as a key moment in the life of the New Mario series, where Nintendo realized it didn’t have to sacrifice the core gamer’s experience at the expense of a more casual audience. This is how Mario can and will appeal to everyone.

Joystiq - 4.5/5 - The New Super Mario Bros. series may have taken the beloved Nintendo franchise back to its 2D roots, but New Super Mario Bros. U reintroduces what made the original games so good in the first place. It proves that there's more to the formula than just impeccable platforming. There's a sense of wonder again, of exploration and discovery. I'm not quite prepared to say New Super Mario Bros. U fully recaptures the spark of Mario's 2D heyday, but it's an impressive step in the right direction.

GameSpot - 8.5/10 - New Super Mario Bros. U is not a game that takes many risks, nor is it definitively the best 2D Mario title, but it's certainly a contender. It's consistently charming, often challenging, and an excellent illustration of that which makes Mario games so special. Nintendo seemingly recaptured traditional, distilled platforming, but also incorporated a newfound attention to modern gaming trends and expectations. It's a challenging platformer, an excellent recreation of Mario's best moments, and it's the perfect way to kick-off Nintendo's journey into HD.

Polygon - 8.5/10 - That's really what separates New Super Mario Bros. U from its "New" predecessors: It adds something to the Mario formula. It's exciting and full of inventive ideas. Until now, the New Super Mario Bros. games have been a fun but mostly mindless reminder of how great Mario was back on the NES or SNES. New Super Mario Bros. U actually feels like it's from that era. It's where the series would have gone next if the transition to 3D had never happened, and it feels great to be back on that track.

Destructoid - 8.5/10 - New Super Mario Bros. U is a great little platformer that kicks off the Wii U launch with a bang. Players know exactly what they're getting with this one -- an entertaining and incomplex bit of gaming that provides challenge and smirks in equal measure. While certainly a "safe" game to launch with, it is by no means unremarkable, and the only people who would fail to have fun are those with a fundamental aversion to Mario or platformers in general. Literally everybody else would find it incredibly difficult to dislike this one ... even if some of those latter stages will make them temporarily despise it. Because nobody likes lava levels. Nobody.

[Wii U] Oxford Street HMV store will host official Wii U launch event in the UK

[Wii U] Oxford Street HMV store will host official Wii U launch event in the UK
[Image: game-news-image-2012-1ec64df1fed02154d77...3d4a6f.png]
America has the Wii U, but Europe isn't far behind. Nintendo has sent out an press release detailing plans for the Wii U's launch in the UK. Specifically they have detailed a official Wii U launch event, which will be hosted by HMV at their flagship Oxford Street store.

Get out your pen and paper (or make an event on your fancy smartphone, people of the future) and take down the following details.

WHAT: Wii U Official Launch Event.
WHERE: HMV, 150 Oxford Street, London.
WHEN: Thursday 29th of November, 2012 from 22:00 until the first official sale at 00:01 on Friday 30th of November.

Be prepared to brave the lines if you are turning up to this event because Nintendo has added an extra twist into the mix, the first 100 customers who queue for the Wii U's launch at the Oxford Street store will also receive a free copy of New Super Mario Bros. U and another game of their choice. Two free games.

If that doesn't draw lines then I'm not sure what will. Who among us is planning to gamble on this launch event?

[Wii U] GameStop confirms that Wii U software pre-orders double the Wii's numbers

[Wii U] GameStop confirms that Wii U software pre-orders double the Wii's numbers
[Image: game-news-image-2012-3792fa1f6eb8d565e76...7c6744.jpg]
How many Wii U games have been pre-ordered? GameStop have a partial answer to that question (partial in the sense that they have confirmed some figures for GameStop pre-orders) and the numbers aren't looking too shabby at all.

Gamasutra has posted a report revealing that 1.2 million pre-orders have been lodged for Wii U software, those are pretty good for the record. The report also reveals that GameStop's 500,000 Wii U consoles were sold out via pre-order almost immediately after the purchase option was made available in September.

Naturally, the increased software pre-order figures can be chalked up to a stronger line-up than the Wii had (which only had a couple of stand-up titles) including New Super Mario Bros. U, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, ZombiU, Assassin's Creed 3, Darksiders 2, Mass Effect 3, Batman: Arkham City, Scribblenauts Unlimited, and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge.

Can the Wii U replicate the Wii's success by unifying the casual audience and winning back the core gamers that felt abandoned during the Wii's lifespan?

Nar the games thing is the fault of lazy developers, we have gone from tagged on "Waggle" controls to tagged on touch screen controls.

RE: [Wii U] GameStop confirms that Wii U software pre-orders double the Wii's numbers
I dunno, seems like a pretty solid mix to me. Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros. U, ZombiU, and Scribblenauts Unlimited for new stuff. Black Ops 2, Assassin's Creed III, Darksiders 2, Mass Effect 3, Arkham City, Ninja Gaiden 3 to give a strong supporting class if you don't already own them on other consoles. The only thing missing to me (that is preventing me from buying one right now) is that really killer launch exclusive. At least the Wii had Twilight Princess. [Image: default.png]

[PS3, X360] Rumour: Ratings board lists Resident Evil: Revelations for consoles
[Image: game-news-image-2012-f2daaae097660cb17ac...1ac79e.jpg]
Resident Evil 6 is behind us now and Resident Evil 7 is likely years away, so what's the best way for Capcom to keep the franchise going until a new entry is released? It seems as though throwing together a port might be the answer.

VG247 reports that a listing surfaced on the Korean Ratings Board suggesting that Resident Evil: Revelations is making its way to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

This move shouldn't be a surprise to anyone really, Resident Evil: Revelations didn't make nearly as many mistakes as Resident Evil 6 did and was generally well-received. Bringing it to a wider audience makes sense, but time will tell if this actually ends up being true. Would any of you guys be interested in picking this up for console? Personally, I'd like to see Capcom include the Wii U in this as well if they're going to do a console port.

Capcom are staying quiet at the moment, we'll update you as soon as we learn more.

[Wii U] Your Nintendo Network ID is tied to your Wii U; so don't you lose or break it

[Wii U] Your Nintendo Network ID is tied to your Wii U; so don't you lose or break it
[Image: game-news-image-2012-b62190fbd30d2222fef...5a6e2c.jpg]
Here's probably one of the more disappointing pieces of news I've had to report on the Wii U today (worse, I feel, than the inability to use your Wii U-formatted external HDD on other Wii U's).

Kotaku is reporting that your Nintendo Network ID is tied to the Wii U you set it up on. If you somehow lose your Wii U then you'll lose access to your account, so you can forgot picking up a second hand Wii U if yours dies as well as logging in on your friend's Wii U.

Talk about disappointing - but this may not be the case in the future. Nintendo has a somewhat vague statement on their support page referring to using your Nintendo Network ID on other devices.

[Image: game-news-image-2012-11e0bb3fb4e2cc67298...6cd4b2.jpg]
"Future" consoles sounds pretty mysterious, it could mean they'll release an update down the road to allow you to sign into your NNID on other Wii U's or it could be referring to using a new Nintendo console/adding NNID functions to the 3DS. Who knows at this point, but until we do know this is pretty disappointing news.

Hopefully Nintendo will be able to do something about it soon.

[PC, PS3, X360] Review Roundup - Far Cry 3

[PC, PS3, X360] Review Roundup - Far Cry 3
[Image: game-news-image-2012-ce5305de98f271743b5...c8b5db.jpg]Eurogamer - 10/10 - "That's because Far Cry 3 is all the best things about open-world gaming. It's a glorious anecdote factory, where you manufacture brilliant new memories every time you wake up in a safehouse and head out into the jungle. It's an astonishing technical achievement, as comfortable revealing incredible landscapes over the brow of a hill as it is when the setting sun winks at you through a canopy, or when the heavens open as you stalk wildlife through the trees and long grass. And it always lets you play, but it also controls the tempo - sometimes a little heavy-handedly, but always with good intentions."

EGM - 10/10 - "In the same sense that the jungles of the Rook Islands get their hooks into Brody, the game’s blend of shooting, driving, sneaking, crafting, and platforming will take hold of you as a player, making it easy to forget that you’re on the other end of a controller. In that sense, Far Cry 3 manages more than a shift on your view of its wisecracking protagonist. It’s the sort of game that makes the genre’s best look absolutely ordinary—which, in a story this beset by twists, turns, and turmoil, may just be the biggest mindf*** of them all."

IGN - 9/10 - "It’s easy to see why someone would want to visit Rook Island – it’s a stunning tropical location with plenty of fun activities, scenic views, and history worth discovering. Far Cry 3 disrupts that paradise to challenge your feelings about enjoying violence. Because of lunatics like Hoyt and Vaas, you’ll see beautiful things you never would have. You’ll do terrible things that make you uncomfortable and meet fascinating, disgusting people. You’ll sympathize with Jason Brody’s difficult choices as he turns from vapid young man into a monster. Far Cry 3 is important for the same reason as Far Cry 2. It’s a shooter that considers shooters thoughtfully, both in the way they’re designed and the way we play them, and then asks us to do the same. Should massacring hundreds be a great way to entertain ourselves? Maybe not. But it is."

Game Informer - 9/10 - "After two remarkable but uneven offerings, Far Cry finally pulls everything together in the third installment. The diverse open-world action, compelling story, and an alluring environment that begs exploration are all high water marks for the series. This is an island adventure all shooter fans should experience."

GameTrailers - 8.6/10 - "There are miles of terrain to discover in Far Cry 3, filled with numerous trials and objectives to explore at your own pace, and an excellent sense of connection with the game’s unhinged cast. The co-op and competitive multiplayer components stand as comparative low points, but chances are you’ll be so busy trekking through this vast island that you’ll likely write them off as just another symptom of jungle sickness."

You might recall that I wrote about the upcoming Metroid fan album, 'Harmony of a Hunter: 101% Run'. Well, I'm happy to let you all know (if you already didn't know) that the album is finished and up for download over at Shinesparkers.

The album is spread across 3-discs and features 39-tracks filled with Metroid goodness.

I've spent the last day listening to it on loop and am in love with it, any self respecting Metroid fan owes themselves to buy it. Tracks that I've thoroughly enjoyed include Derris-Kharlan's 'Metroid Medley 2', Theophany's 'Gravity', and Sam Dillard's 'Beyond the Glass'. I could go on for hours about how much I am enjoying listening to it but I recommend you dive in yourself.

Here's the final video preview again.

Don't forget to head over to the 'Harmony of a Hunter: 101% Run' Facebook page and 'like' them if you haven't already.

[Wii] Wii Mini officially announced

[Wii] Wii Mini officially announced
[Image: do6fsw.jpg]A new miniature-sized version of the Wii is being released exclusively in Canada on December 7th, Nintendo has confirmed. The appropriately named Wii Mini is both cheaper and smaller than the original console, retailing at just $99.

The Wii Mini has a brand new look, featuring a textured black matte finish on top that's incased in a red border with tapered edges. The package comes with red Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk controllers.

What's the catch? The Wii mini console does not connect to the Internet or support online features in games. Gamecube support has also been scrapped in order to keep costs down.

No announcements have been made regarding other regions.

[Wii U] Sony's Jack Tretton wishes Nintendo every success with the Wii U

[Wii U] Sony's Jack Tretton wishes Nintendo every success with the Wii U
[Image: game-news-image-2012-ba49280861003651a93...9fe81a.jpg]
Nintendo's launched the Wii U in America, launching a new console is never easy no matter how experienced the company. Sony are no stranger to difficult launches after soldiering through both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita launches.

President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, Jack Tretton, has wished Nintendo every success with the launch of the Wii U. Tretton wished Nintendo luck in the latest Official PlayStation Blogcast. When he was asked for his thoughts on the system he had the following to say:

"Rising tide lifts all boats. Any time there is attention to the industry, any time there is attention to gaming it’s a good thing for us.

It takes a village of creativity to ultimately push technological boundaries. I think Nintendo has a great heritage in the business, they certainly surprised a lot of people with the success of the Wii. They’ve got great heritage in their first party development, and I’m interested to see what happens with it. But I think anything that draws attention to gaming is good for companies like us that live and die in this business, so I wish them a lot of success."

Its nice to hear such kind words from one competitor to another, Tretton continued on to talk about how he feels that the PlayStation 3 is the state of the art console but that's his job.

I'm sure there are plenty who would echo Tretton's well-wishing for the Wii U.

Thanks for pointing this out Nintendo Life.

11:29 on the 29th of November could lead us anywhere, but some of the more switched on people across the web have noticed that the logo is very similar to the design featured in Splash Damage's iOS title, RAD Soldiers. Its already saved as 'car_teaser' as well, for what its worth.

Thanks for the heads up, PCGamesN.

I wasn't a huge fan of Brink, so I'm hopeful that Splash Damage can deliver the goods.

[PC, PS3, X360] New Borderlands 2 DLC confirmed as "Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage"

[PC, PS3, X360] New Borderlands 2 DLC confirmed as "Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage"
I hope you like explosions. Because if you don't then you might want to skip the next Borderlands 2 expansion, because it will contain copious amounts of explosions.

It had already been revealed by a Borderlands 2 update but now it has completely confirmed. Mr. Torgue took over a Gearbox twitter account to make the announcement.

"Are you badass enough to survive 'Mister Torgue's Campaign of Carnage? I'm legit curious cause I dunno you that well," wrote Torgue.

He also has shared a picture of himself throwing "up the horns like a badass."

The DLC will cost the same as Captain Scarlett did, which was $9.99/800MSP, and a release date will be announced in a couple of days.

[Multi] THQ in talks with a financial sponsor but aren't out of the woods yet

[Multi] THQ in talks with a financial sponsor but aren't out of the woods yet

THQ has been staring down the barrel a lot recently, but perhaps there might be some light at the end of this tunnel. The company has entered an agreement with Wells Fargo Capital Finance in order to protect itself from defaulting on its credit facility.

Eurogamer reports that the agreement with Wells Fargo means that it won't pursue its right against the publisher on its $50 million credit facility and will allow additional loans. The deal will last until the 15th of January, 2013. THQ has also entered negotiations with a "financial sponsor" regarding their financial alternatives. Don't put on those rose-tinted glasses yet though, THQ has warned that “There can be no assurance these negotiations will result in a transaction.”

“We are pleased to have reached an agreement with Wells Fargo,” said Brian Farrell, boss of THQ. “This agreement enables us to continue focusing on bringing our games in development to market.”

“Meanwhile, we are evaluating financial alternatives that will transition the company into its next phase.”

On top of this a note at the bottom of the statement to the press revealed that Paul Pucino, chief financial officer, has quit the Californian company.

I'm crossing my fingers that THQ can make it through the woods, they've got some good IPs but things are still looking pretty rough.

[PC, PS3, X360] Eurocom suffers losses, blames "decline in demand for console games"

[PC, PS3, X360] Eurocom suffers losses, blames "decline in demand for console games"
007: Legends wasn't exactly a memorable game, suffering a number of shortcomings and continued the less-than-impressive run of James Bond since the Nintendo 64 classic. [Image: game-news-image-2012-99c73b57a7b48a1bfe3...d9ee8e.jpg]
Eurocom has posted a statement from the studio's director, Hugh Binns, where it is revealed that only 50 staff members will be left at the studio with their focus shifting towards mobile games in the future.

“Eurocom are undertaking a restructuring which I regret to say has meant we’ve made the majority of our workforce redundant today.”

“This includes many very experienced, talented and highly skilled employees, and we’d like to thank them all for your hard work and efforts.”

“We’ve fought to try and save as many jobs as possible, but the steep decline in demand for console games, culminating in a number of console projects falling through in the last week, left us with no option. Eurocom has retained a core staff of just under 50 employees and will be focusing mainly on mobile opportunities moving forward.”

Its a shame that such a loss has happened and our thoughts are with those who were part of the redundancies.

Thanks for the heads up, VG247

[PC, PS3, X360] DICE won't become a "Battlefield factory", Mirror's Edge 2 underway

[PC, PS3, X360] DICE won't become a "Battlefield factory", Mirror's Edge 2 underway
[Image: game-news-image-2012-07774f357239149831d...e1d1dd.jpg]
Remember the controversy that kicked up when EA announced that early pre-orders for Medal of Honor: Warfighter would gain access to the Battlefield 4 beta? Two years between main Battlefield entries really didn't seem like much time, many fans began to fear that EA would turn DICE into the new Infinity Ward.

Fear not though, the Swedish developer insists that they do not want to become a Battlefield factory. Patrick Soderlund, EA Games vice president, has discussed DICE's activities with OXM.

“Well it depends, right? Maybe it is and maybe it isn't. It's also important for us - the DICE guys are roughly 300 people in the Stockholm studio; not all of them are working on Battlefield things, and that's intentional, because we don't want to become a Battlefield factory.

"The minute we start saying 'you're going to make a Battlefield game for the rest of your life', they're going to go some place else. So for them to make great Battlefield games there need to be other things for them to do as well. That's why we have people who move around quite a bit. And then obviously we have a boatload of people that just want to make Battlefield because they love it.”

“Same thing with the team in San Francisco that are making Dead Space. It's a stunning team and they're passionate about what they do, and they love making Dead Space. Then the answer's 'well, then make Dead Space'. Then we have to figure out how to sell it and make it successful."

[Image: game-news-image-2012-bbdbe50cbf79dda2736...432e01.jpg]
That's not all though, according to Ben Cousins, general manager of ngmoco Sweden and former executive producer of the Battlefield franchise, the studio has a trick up their sleeve. Cousins tweeted that the studio is working on Mirror's Edge 2.

"It is general knowledge in the Stockholm dev scene that Mirror's Edge 2 is in production at DICE."

So, there you have it. EA has declined to comment at this point, but I'm sure I'm not alone in hoping that a sequel to cult hit will surface.
