The Hip Hop Dance Experience 'keeping it real' Nov. 13

The Hip Hop Dance Experience 'keeping it real' Nov 13
Ubisoft's next excursion into the world of Wii/Kinect dancing games, The Hip Hop Dance Experience, has been given a new trailer, a gallery of screenshots and – more importantly – a release date of November 13.

Rather than focusing on one musical act in particular, as it did with its last "Experience" games, Ubisoft seeks to encompass the whole of a genre with fresh kicks and sweet beats. Obviously, there's more to hip hop than just dancing (rapping, DJing and graffiti art, specifically) but One-Fourth The Hip Hop Experience doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

Nintendo Power coming to an end

by Writer RSS on Aug 21st 2012 2:00PM

Nintendo Power coming to an endNintendo has chosen not to renew its licensing agreement with Future Publishing (the company that currently produces Nintendo Power) and has no intentions to take over the publication itself, according to insider sources speaking to Ars Technica. A now-deleted tweet from NP staff suggested this was accurate.
Reportedly "difficult to work with," Nintendo is said to have taken no interest in working with Future on expanded online initiatives to strengthen the Nintendo Power brand. Editors and staff members were told that the magazine would be shut down sometime last week and have since begun transitioning to other Future publications, according to Ars Technica's source.

We've reached out to Future Publishing and Nintendo for comment. Originally launching in 1988, Nintendo Power was run in-house by Nintendo until the property was licensed to Future in 2007.

La-Mulana comes to WiiWare Sept. 20, EnjoyUp publishing

by Writer RSS on Aug 30th 2012 3:00PM

The remake of Nigoro's retro-inspired, brutally hard archaeological platformer La-Mulana recently made it to PC, but the long-awaited WiiWare release was canceled by publisher Nicalis.

Spanish developer EnjoyUp Games (Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ) has picked up La-Mulana for WiiWare, and will publish it in North America and Europe. The long, long wait is almost over: EnjoyUp plans to release the game on September 20.

La-Mulana follows Professor Lemeza into the ruins of La-Mulana after finding a note from his long-lost father. It's a Metroidvania-style game set in a deadly cave full of traps and monsters.

Kirby-themed bubblegum record blown away at PAX

by Writer RSS on Sep 3rd 2012 8:00PM

Kirby bubblegum record broken at PAXIn other news, 536 people blew bubblegum bubbles together. Also, it was a world record for simultaneous bubblegum blowing, which is lovely. The bubblegum blowers blew at PAX to celebrate Kirby's 20th anniversary, and the upcoming release of Kirby's Dream Collection on September 16

We were unsure Nintendo could rustle up enough blowers to blow a world record. But, like the bubblegum, we were blown away, as was the previous record of 304 achieved by Kirkwood Community College in 2010. We're sorry, Kirkwood, but 304 to 536 just blows.

NintendoWare Weekly: Prince of Persia

by Writer RSS on Sep 6th 2012 6:30PM

NintendoWare Weekly Prince of PersiaThe SNES version of Prince of Persia arrives on the Virtual Console in North America. We'd forgotten this was happening in the interim between the December ESRB rating and today, so this is, like every Wii Virtual Console release, a pleasant and unexpected surprise.

Speaking of surprises, DSiWare's Crazy Hunter is about a crocodile building a goat tower to reach the sky, in order to capture hens who lay golden eggs. It gets weirder from there, actually.

Wii Prince of Persia (SNES, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): Before all the time travel stuff, it was just a simple story of a man running and climbing through a prison, fighting skeleton men and drinking potions he finds inside the ceiling. 3DS eShop Balloon Pop Remix (UFO Interactive, 1 player, $7.99): Draw lines to pop balloons and create chain reactions.Heyawake by Nikoli (Hamster Corporation, 1-4 players, $7.99): Number puzzles in which the numbers are divided into "rooms."DSiWare Crazy Hunter (EnjoyUp, 1 player, $4.99/500 DSi Points): This is a game in which you drive a boat to knock goats off of platforms, fish them out of the river, and then stack them to make a tower. Of goats.

Conduit developer teases news on franchise before year's endA representative for High Voltage Software has teased there's something in the works for Wii shooter franchise The Conduit. Answering questions on GameFAQs, Bob Chamot, a designer at the studio said, "We haven't forgotten about Conduit over here, either. I would expect some new Conduit-related news before the year is out."

High Voltage Software has been working on several projects, including the Zone of the Enders: HD Collection. We've followed up with the developer to see if there's anything more it can share about the Conduit project. Whatever it is, we hope it'll be an improvement over Conduit 2.

Your Vita is a TurboExpress*

by Writer RSS on Sep 25th 2012 8:30PM

Welcome to Living in the Past, a weekly column about what's new in old games. Now get off our lawn.
Your Vita is a TurboExpressLast year, Hudson snuck a selection of Turbografx-16 games onto the PlayStation Store, playable on both PS3 and PSP. It's a very small selection in North America at just ten games (this is the first caveat of many I'll mention), but it includes some of the best on the platform, like Bonk's Adventure, Alien Crush, Neutopia, and not China Warrior.

I feel it's my duty to periodically remind people of the availability of Turbografx-16 games, so now that there's another platform that can play them, namely the PlayStation Vita, I'm taking advantage of the opportunity. These downloads work on both home systems (PS3) and portable systems (PSP and Vita), allowing you to experience the cutting-edge cross-compatibility that these games enjoyed over 20 years ago between the Turbografx-16 and the TurboExpress handheld.

I guess I should bring up all the other caveats before we get too excited.

The meager selection is the biggest issue preventing TG16 on PSN from being as amazing as it could be, and I don't see that situation getting any better, given the death of Hudson Soft. Konami could work on putting more TG16 games up, but I don't think it'll ever be a priority.

The other big concern is one I brought up before with regards to PSOne Classics: actually getting the games on the Vita. None of the Turbografx Classics are available directly through the Vita store, nor can they be accessed through your downloads list on a Vita. Instead, you have to download them to your PS3, and then transfer them to Vita through the Content Management Tool before you've installed the PS3 versions. Infuriating!

Your Vita is a TurboExpressDiscovery is also an issue, as the games are just mixed in with everything else on PSN, rather than being given their own section. And PSN's finicky search won't bring anything up if you search for "Bonk" versus "Bonk's," to use one particularly annoying example.

But after you get through all that process, you have a TurboGrafx-16 game living on your Vita. That can be a magical thing, especially if you've never experienced the charm of Bonk's Adventure, a game in which you deliver flying headbutts to sentient dinosaur bosses to break their mind control, spin in the air to catch fruit, and become an invincible Frankenstein's Monster-esque creature by eating meat; or if you've never used a pinball to free crawling aliens from a giant brain in Alien Crush.

If you want to explore a bigger collection of TG16 games, there's always the Wii Virtual Console. That lacks a portable component, but makes up for it with an incredible selection, including the CD-ROM based Dracula X. Or you can create a Japanese PSN account and browse that selection. Unless your Vita happens to be tied to a Japanese account, though, you won't be able to transfer them to the handheld.

Even though it's technically kind of annoying to get some of this stuff on your platform of choice, it's still easier than ever to try great games like Alien Crush. Considering the TG16's status as the first casualty of the early 90's console wars, I'm guessing many of you never got the opportunity.

August NPD: Software sales stabilize somewhat, Darksiders 2 takes first place [Update: Nintendo chimes in]

by Writer RSS on Sep 6th 2012 7:06PM

Despite the fact that hardware and software sales in the physical channel are still down when compared to August in 2011, market stabilization in the software sector (along with promising signs from the first week of 3DS XL sales) helps to reassure that 2012's ever-downward spiral may not be eternal.

Hardware sales for August 2012 were down 39 percent, bringing in $150.6 million versus the $248.8 million accrued during the same period in 2011. The Xbox 360 sold 190,000 units and was again the top selling platform of the month, according to Major Nelson, though the 3DS and PS3 both showed increases over July 2011, despite the month being down as a whole. Only one week of 3DS XL sales were recorded, but in that week enough units were sold to account for 44 percent of all 3DS sales in August.

The accessories segment continued its trend of having the smallest percentage amount of year-over-year loss at $127.3 million for the period, which is down seven percent from August 2011's $137 million. Points cards and other physical means of buying online currency continue to drive this segment, according to NPD Group industry analyst Anita Frazier.

As far as software is concerned, August 2012's performance was down nine percent – $237.7 million as compared to $261.8 million during the same period last year. When only looking at software for "high definition platforms," however, the year-over-year difference is only one percent. This signifies market stabilization, says Frazier, but August's sales were worse than they could have been had the months prior not been so devoid of new releases.

Darksiders 2 was the best-selling game during the period, followed by New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. As always, August's complete list of the top 10 games can be found after the break.

Nintendo Update: 3DS hardware sales were up 36 percent over July, while 3DS software sales were up 68 percent, Nintendo has said. New Super Mario Bros. 2 sold more than 240,000 copies, making it the best-selling individual SKU for the month of August. Meanwhile, Kingdom Hearts 3D sold over 180,000 copies.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 Emerges as the Best-Selling Video Game of August

Even with only five days of reported data, Nintendo 3DS XL and New Super Mario Bros. 2 still had major impacts on the August video game market. The new hardware, which features 90 percent larger screens than the original Nintendo 3DS, and the new side-scrolling Mario adventure both launched on Aug. 19 and helped Nintendo achieve the following:

Nintendo 3DS software sales increased by more than 68 percent over sales in July.
Nintendo 3DS hardware sales increased by more than 36 percent over sales in July.
The No. 1 and No. 2 top-selling software SKUs for the month are both exclusive to Nintendo 3DS. New Super Mario Bros. 2 sold more than 240,000 units to finish No. 1, and KINGDOM HEARTS 3D [Dream Drop Distance] from Square Enix sold more than 180,000 copies to finish No. 2.
"Software sells hardware, and no one sells either quite like Mario," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "In addition to helping New Super Mario Bros. 2 get off to a great start, Nintendo 3DS XL is driving increased interest in titles such as Kid Icarus: Uprising, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Mario Kart 7. These games have been on the market for more than six months but provide a completely new experience on the larger screens. Combine these titles with the upcoming Paper Mario: Sticker Star and a robust list of third-party games, and Nintendo 3DS is poised to be high on holiday wish lists this year."

Fils-Aime: Wii up to 40 million units in US, Nintendo won't abandon it

by Writer RSS on Sep 13th 2012 5:30PM

FilsAime Wii sells 40 million units in US, Nintendo isn't abandoning itThe Wii has sold 40 million units in the US, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime told investors after the Nintendo Direct Wii U conference today.

Even though the Wii U is set in holiday stone with a launch on November 18, Nintendo isn't losing sight of the Wii.

"We will continue to sell the Wii," Fils-Aime said. "As we sit here today, in the US the Wii has sold about 40 million units. We believe that there continues to be an opportunity with Wii. Yes, these are late, late adopters. And yes, price points are important. But we do believe there's still opportunity for the Wii, and we will continue to sell Wii side-by-side for some period of time."

Many Wii games and all Wii accessories are backward-compatible with the Wii U, which Fils-Aime called a "one-two punch in our home console business between Wii U and Wii."

Besides, the US isn't the only market for the Wii. "I'm responsible for Canada and Latin America as well," Fils-Aime said. "We think there's opportunity in both of those markets, especially Latin America. You can reach price points, you can reach consumers that candidly we won't be able to reach with the Wii U. That's gonna continue to be an opportunity.

"Lastly, on the global base, certainly there are markets in Eastern Europe. There are a number of other markets where if Wii has an attractive price point, it'll do well. So, we will continue to be in the Wii business for quite some time."

"Nintendo can confirm that Future US will end the production of Nintendo Power magazine with the last issue slated for December 2012," the company told CVG (which is also owned by Future Publishing, incidentally).

According to yesterday's report, Nintendo was "difficult to work with" and did little to help Future transition the magazine into the online era. Nintendo Power staff members will reportedly migrate to other Future publications.

Square Enix unveils TGS lineup, Dragon Quest X WiiU includedSquare Enix unveiled its Tokyo Game Show lineup this week, revealing the Wii U version of Dragon Quest X is being showcased for the first time. Square, who released the Wii version of the MMORPG last month in Japan, says fans can expect new information about the game at the exhibition. Presumably that includes what the Wii U version has that the other doesn't, and how that affects the game's cross-platform play.

Other highlights from the announced lineup include Hitman Absolution, the Realm Reborn re-launch of Final Fantasy XIV, and Black Ops 2, which Square Enix is publishing in Japan. The Tokyo Game Show runs through September 20-23.
