Corrupted Super Mario 64 shows the real mushroom kingdom

by David Hinkle Writer RSS on Dec 4th 2013 1:00AM

Sometimes cartridges go bad. We can't explain what is going on in this footage of a corrupted Super Mario 64, presented by the same individual who posted that creepy Sesame Street footage earlier this year, but at least we know to avoid Princess Peach when she's baking a cake. Peach smash!

Yes, Aurotto. You may not recognise the name, but Aurotto is the new Pokémon that was revealed in a trailer attached to the newest Pokémon movie.

Until now we've had to deal with guesswork and images drawn by fans to figure out what this new tree-like Pokémon looks like because the trailer wasn't actually available outside theaters. Thankfully that has now changed and you can catch the very brief snippet of footage containing Aurotto.

Pokémon X & Y are due to release this October across the world.

Thanks AGB.

[PC, PS3, X360] Capcom shows Tim Phillips behind the scenes as Dante in DmC

[PC, PS3, X360] Capcom shows Tim Phillips behind the scenes as Dante in DmC
DmC Devil May Cry continues to pick up more dislikes with each video that Capcom releases, but I admire the developers determination. This latest video goes behind the scenes with Australian-bred Tim Phillips strutting his stuff as Dante in his mo-cap suit. Lou Beatty Jr also features, Lou plays the part of Phineas who sometimes lends Dante a hand.
Thanks for the heads up, VG247.

The above leaked trailer for WWE 13, assuming it hasn't been ripped from the pages of YouTube by THQ, shows off many of the wrestling acrobatics and tiny shorts one can look forward to performing and wearing this fall, when the game pile drives its way onto retail shelves come November 1.

Eagle-eyed readers will recognize wrestling legends The Undertaker, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Mankind, among newer faces like Sheamus, Mark Henry, CM Punk and Chris Jericho. Hey THQ, how 'bout bringing back some Doink?

[CES'12, Wii U] Wii U shows off a panoramic view of Tokyo

[CES'12, Wii U] Wii U shows off a panoramic view of Tokyo
Nothing new emerged from Vegas about Nintendo's upcoming console, but they did have a neat (and new) little demonstration here with the tablet controller. Essentially it features a TV playing some footage of Tokyo at a fixed angle, but using the tablet controller you are able to freely look around the environment, which of course you can't see on the TV.

The video comes courtesy of NintendoLife.

[3DS] Square Enix dates Kingdom Hearts 3D, shows off themed 3DS

[3DS] Square Enix dates Kingdom Hearts 3D, shows off themed 3DS
Square Enix has announced a release date for Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance in Japan, fans will be able to pick the game themselves on the 29th of March. Along with the release date, they also announced a hardware bundle as well that includes a special 3DS console. [Image: game-news-image-2012-b5988a90f954ea6d47f...a7775c.jpg]
Unfortunately no pricing was announced for the bundle, but it looks like a pretty spiffy piece of hardware. Now we just need to wait it out and see what sort of release date Square Enix give the game for a Western release.

MCV 2012 UK salary survey shows industry pay up 10 percent year over year

by on Jan 13th 2012 4:00AM

MCV's 2012 UK Games Industry Salary Survey, which polled 975 people (597 of whom worked in United Kingdom), showed an average UK games industry salary of £33,123 ($50,741), more than a 10 percent increase from 2011's average of £30,667 ($46,979).

That figure was created using survey results from "all sectors - development, publishing, retail, PR & marketing, services, technology and business development," according to MCV. Ten percent of respondents were women, which is reportedly in-scale with their overall presence in the British gaming industry.

The study's average salary figure is a median average rather than a mean average, we should note, and does not include "the group of very senior, and very well paid, execs" that also participated in the survey. Including their data, the average salary is £35,790. If you include the 378 non-British respondents, the average rose to £34,263, indicating that junior-level employees may be earning more outside of the UK.

The survey also showed a disparity between the average salaries of men and women, with industry women making £1.35 an hour less than their male counterparts. This is disproportionate to MCV's global findings, which show that women in the games industry earn more than men on average, albeit only by a few hundred pounds. Here is your reward for making it all the way through a facts-oriented article about salaries and averages.

[Wii U] Valve Shows Interest in Wii U

[Wii U] Valve Shows Interest in Wii U
[Image: game-news-image-2011-f45103498f443a13bc3...19dfa2.png]
While I'm sure most of you would prefer your news from Valve to have something to do with Half-Life 2: Episode 3/Half-Life 3/Half-Life anything (sorry, no dice), Valve head Gabe Newell had some interesting comments regarding Nintendo's next home console today. Valve has never released any of their games on a Nintendo console, but that may soon change if Newell's words are anything to go by.

"Wii U seems to be a lot more powerful than the previous generation. It sort of fits better into the scalability in terms of graphics performance and CPU performance, so I think it'll be a lot easier for us to fit it into our scalability model," he told Joystiq, also pointing out that Valve has recently been showing more and more support for consoles. "Now it's a lot easier to look at Wii U and have it fit within that framework."

Despite the developer's previous reluctance to bring its games to Nintendo platforms, Newell also confessed that "we've always loved Nintendo." Maybe buttering up the Big N just a little bit, but it is exciting to ponder what uses Valve might find for the Wii U's unique controller.

Nintendo of America patent shows off unreleased motorcycle game concept

by on Mar 28th 2011 8:00PM

Every night, before we loose ourselves from the moorings of the conscious world, we say a short prayer that a game developer will realize the potential in a relaunch of Sega's arcade almost-classic, Harley Davidson & LA Riders. Our wishes haven't been granted yet, but a recently uncovered patent (.pdf) shows that Nintendo of America came awfully close to creating something similar to Sega's Easy Rider-esque masterpiece.

The patent depicts a motorcycle (and/or Jetski) racing game controlled using the Wii Balance Board and Wiimote. Twisting and turning the remote accelerates and turns the bike, while leaning on the Balance Board allows the player to take sharper turns. It's unclear whether the game depicted is still in development, but we'll keep our fingers crossed regardless. Hey, it beats buying and riding an actual motorcycle, you know. Those things are like, super dangerous.

Eternal Darkness concept art shows endings that could have been

by on Feb 15th 2011 12:00AM

You have to like Eternal Darkness to work at Joystiq. It's on the application exam (right next to the section on Metal Gear Awesome). As such, it is our duty to share the discovery of some Eternal Darkness concept art on the Behance Network page of John Dobbie, former assistant lead artist for Silicon Knights.

The various pieces depict several endings that never made it into the final game (which ended up with four possible endings). The images depict a zombie apocalypse, giant structures built with human bones and humanity marching directly into the mouth of the lobster-like god, Chattur'gha.

Head over to Dobbie's Behance page to check them out.
