[PS3, PSP] PSN Information Compromised

[PS3, PSP] PSN Information Compromised
For the last week the Playstation Network has been down due to what Sony called an 'external intrusion'. Today it was announced that information stored on PSN may be compromised. Information compromised includes: NameAddress (city, state, zip)CountryEmail AddressBirthdatePlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login

Purchase history and password security answers may also have been leaked. Sony also isn't ruling out the fact that credit card information may have been compromised. And while there is "no evidence" that this has according, Sony is taking the liberty of informing users that credit card number and expiration date may have been compromised.

The U.S. Government has also been getting involved. Senator Richard Blumenthal from Connecticut issued a letter to SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton, troubled by the "failure of Sony to immediately notify affected customers of the breach and to extend adequate financial data security protections." He then goes on to call on Sony to provide affected customers with two years of credit reporting, the cost of which Sony would have to bear.

Sony says that they needed time in order to ascertain the "scope of the breach."

Nintendo profits fall 66% in fiscal year, 3DS sells 3.61 million

by on Apr 25th 2011 9:36AM

Nintendo's net income dropped to ¥77.6 billion ($946 million) for its fiscal year ending in March, marking the company's third year of profit declines. The figure is also well below the ¥200 billion ($2.13 billion) Nintendo estimated it would make at the conclusion of its previous fiscal year. If only Nintendo had some kind of distraction so investors wouldn't notice ... OMG, guyz, "Wii's successor" in 2012.

Looking forward, Nintendo expects to have net sales of ¥1.1 trillion over the next year, a slight increase from the ¥1.01 trillion reported this year, but still below the ¥1.4 trillion in 2010 -- they may just be post-decimal figures when talking trillions, but those are hundreds of billions. The company is planning on a net income of ¥110 billion yen ($1.3 billion) by next March, through "vigorously" marketing the 3DS, releasing The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for Wii and selling software from its "long-selling 'evergreen' titles."

Nintendo noted in its financial report that it has not suffered any direct damage of the recent "Great East Japan Earthquake," but that an indirect impact is predicted regarding "individual consumption patterns or economic conditions in the future."

Global unit sales life-to-date (March) of the Nintendo DS, 3DS and Wii hardware were 146.4 million units, 3.61 million units and 86.01 million units, respectively. Nintendo is expected to reveal a playable model of the "Wii's successor" at E3.

[Project Cafe] Nintendo seemingly announces new hardware, premiere at E3
Looks like E3 is where it will all be going down. Nintendo of Japan has been circulating a press release that lets know that E3 is where our eyes need to be. No name is mentioned in the release, but after Shigeru Miyamoto commented that where there is smoke there is fire. [Image: game-news-image-2011-90c24c0e0f4c74d49a0...bbbd63.png]
What are your thoughts on the matter?

RE: [Project Cafe] Nintendo seemingly announces new hardware, premiere at E3
This article seems to suggest that Cafe isn't as powerful as IGN is claiming:
Quote:There's also talk of an AMD GPU from the R700 family, which unfortunately tells us very little about what we can expect from Cafe's graphics. However, it does fit in with Nintendo's modus operandi in utilising cheap, existing hardware, most likely with console-specific refinements.

In terms of available power, R700 scales up from anything from a low-power Radeon HD 4350 with 80 streaming processing units all the way to the HD 4890 that utilises 10 times as many. Optimistic speculation zeroes in on the HD 4770 as the most likely candidate for inclusion in Cafe, but our sources suggest that the overall profile of the GPU is much closer to the Xbox 360 - and we've even heard that in some applications it may even operate at a deficit compared to Xenos.

The next six weeks is going to be a cluster**** of rumours and speculation. Hopefully it won't be more than that. [Image: default.png]

Super Monkey Ball 3D Review

A NintendoFuse game review by JHardin1112.

Game – Super Monkey Ball 3D
Version – 3DS
Time Spent Playing – 6+ hours
Obtained – Review Copy from Sega

Introduction
Super Monkey Ball 3D is the latest addition in the Monkey Ball series.  Although the core gameplay has not changed, Sega has brought something new to the table.  That’s right, this time around, you will be experiencing the world in a whole new way, in 3D! The premise is simple.  Here is all you need to know; you’re a monkey, in a ball, and you want bananas.  In order to get these bananas you must race down tracks picking them up as you hurtle yourself along towards the goal. All the while you need to avoid obstacles, ledges, and holes in the tracks so that you don’t fall into the abyss below each stage.

Gameplay and Controls
Gameplay consists of three modes; Monkey Ball, Monkey Race, and Monkey Fight; the latter two being more of mini-games rather than full game modes.  While Monkey Race and Monkey Fight are fun, they are brief.  Needless to say, most of my time was spent playing Monkey Ball.  Now, let’s take a look at each mode.

Monkey Ball
Monkey Ball consists of racing down a track, collecting bananas, avoiding falls, and trying to beat the 60 second clock.  There are a total of 8 worlds with 10 levels each, the eighth world being a bonus.  Throughout each level you will be avoiding narrow edges, inclines, declines, bumpers and more all while trying to race to the end.  There are two control schemes you can choose, Motion Control or Circle Pad.  If you want to frustrate yourself, try Motion Control.  If you attempt that, I wouldn’t bother using 3D, as it won’t work well, since you are constantly tilting the system.  This will leave you with Circle Pad, which offers you precise control and works very well.  You just move the control pad in the direction you want to roll, that’s all there is to it.

Monkey Race
Monkey Race is similar in design to Mario Kart.  Your choices of racing modes are Grand Prix, Quick Race, and Time Trial.  In each mode, you race in karts along various tracks, driving through item gates picking up weapons to slow down your opponents.  However, the difference here being that Monkey Race is a fairly limited mode, as you only have 9 tracks to race on spread over three series.  The controls work well, using the Circle Pad to steer, A to throttle, B to brake/reverse, R to spin/dash, and L for items.  There are three special moves available to use.  You are able to get a speed boost by racing behind another player’s slipstream.  You can drift around corners by holding the brake (B) button, releasing only when you want to interrupt the drift.  The last special move is a Spin and Dash, which is done while holding down R as you turn a corner at high speed.  This will cause an aura to glow around you.  Once the aura is red, release R and watch your monkey go!

Monkey Fight
As similar in design as Monkey Race is to Mario Kart, the same can be said of Monkey Fight and Smash Bros.  Fight pits you against up to three other players in a battle for the highest amount of bananas.  Each character has a unique strong and weak attack.  The goal is to punch and hit your opponents, stealing their bananas until the player with the most bananas when the timer expires, wins.

Unfortunately in my time with Super Monkey Ball 3D I was unable to take advantage of the Local Play or Download Play.  To my understanding, Local Play allows you to play the mini-games against three of your friends while the remaining slots are filled by A.I. opponents.  Download Play allows up to three players to download game data from one 3DS cartridge wirelessly.  The only limitation being the roster of playable characters is reduced.

Visuals and Sound
Aside from the static backgrounds in each level, the visuals are fantastic.  The use of 3D is done quite well from start to finish.  From the moment I saw the logo pop up and I watched the pink ball bouncing; to the end credits as I rolled through rows and rows of bananas, I was hooked.  As I rolled all around wildly clamoring for those precious bananas, the added effect of 3D made me feel immersed in each level.  I think the team at Sega did a fantastic job in creating a truly impressive game world.  The storybook scene which introduces each level is well worth mentioning as it has a superb 3D effect.  Regardless of 3D, a games’ visuals need to stand on their own and in Super Monkey Ball 3D, they do just that.  Every level has unique visual extras which add to the overall theme of the world, and they look great.

The sound is just as engaging throughout the main part of the game.  For each of the 8 worlds, there is music which compliments the theme for each of the worlds.  The music is catchy, fun, and upbeat.  Take for instance World 7 Space Factory.  The entire world has music which sounds as though it could be playing at a nightclub during a rave, it has a whole techno vibe going on.  Even better, World 5 Dragons Journey has oriental music all throughout.  The music really adds to the engaging atmosphere.  Equally as important and well done are the sound effects themselves.  If your monkey gets too close to an edge he/she will shout out something along the lines of “woah! woah! woah!”, arms pinwheeling in unison.  The sound of your ball rolling is hard to describe but it works well.  It never feels annoying or overused.

Concluding Overall Impressions
Super Monkey Ball 3D is an enjoyable, and entertaining game.  The levels are unique and creative, although not that challenging.  I admit, I died plenty of times but this was attributed more to my carelessness than anything.  The music and sounds are engaging and catchy, and do a really great job of completing each level.  The only thing holding Super Monkey Ball 3D back from a perfect score, for me at least, is the limited content.  However, the replay value from trying to beat my high scores makes up for this.  Plus, once I am around other people with a 3DS, I have a feeling I will be taking advantage of Local and Download play often.  Have you played Super Monkey Ball 3Ds? If so, what did you think?

Final Score: 4 out of 5

NintendoWare Weekly: Inchworm Animation, Airport Mania

by on Apr 25th 2011 10:30AM

Today's DSiWare and WiiWare lineup definitely looks like the work of a company that isn't paying the strictest attention to its current generation of consoles. As Nintendo turns its eye toward the future, the downloadable Wii and DS lineup is looking pretty sparse.

The good news is that Flat Black Films was finally able to sneak its remarkable-looking animation app, Inchworm Animation, into the DSi Shop. That DSi in your hand just magically became an animation studio. Or it will, later, if you buy the program.

WiiWare Word Searcher Deluxe (Digital Leisure, 1-4 players, 500 Wii Points): 100 word search puzzles, each in a different theme.Demo: Learning with the PooYoos: Episode 3 (Lexis Numerique, 1 player, 0 Wii Points): The third demo for this educational series. This one is apparently about "plants and music."DSiWare Airport Mania: First Flight (Lemon Games, 1 player, 200 DSi Points): Safely land planes in eight different airports.Inchworm Animation (Flat Black Films, 1 player, 500 DSi Points): Feature-rich drawing and animation program, allowing you to make images up to 9,999 x 9,999 pixels in size.Ubongo (Korner Entertainment, 1-2 players, DSi Points): A DSiWare version of a board game in which each player tries to solve a puzzle by making a predefined shape with colored tiles.

Our Exclusive Interview with MonkeyPaw Games about BurgerTime HD

One of the game I remember most from my early childhood is BurgerTime. In fact, I remember first playing not in the arcade, but on one of the old-school handhelds. My relatives mentioned how they played it all the time, and it was not too long before I became just as attached as them. Even though the game’s premise and mechanics were simple, it was almost addicting.

Similar to titles like Donkey Kong and Mario Bros., BurgerTime was based on a one screen grid. The basic idea places you, as Peter Pepper, in a burger factory. You must create burgers while walking over the different parts (buns, meat, lettuce, cheese). All the while, you also must avoid the enemies, which include hot dogs, pickles, and eggs. After you complete a level, you begin again.

MonkeyPaw Games has taken the classic game of BurgerTime and created a modern remix that will soon hit the WiiWare service (along with XBLA and PSN). BurgerTime HD includes new enemies, boss battles, and multiplayer. All of this takes place in a new cylindrical playing field.

We recently had the privilege of interviewing John Greiner, the President of MonkeyPaw Games. He spoke with us about this upcoming title along with his history with BurgerTime, Hudson Games, and future plans for Nintendo systems. Below is a portion of our interview.

NintendoFuse: What made you want to work in the gaming industry instead of just playing them?

John Greiner: I went to school and graduated with a BA in general education. I chose to travel the world, but only made it to Asia. I met the president of HudsonSoft, and he hired me to work on the TurboGrafx. It had already been successfully launched in Japan, but the US side was a completely different cookie. That shoved me right in front of a lot of gaming companies. I just got lucky and ended up in the industry by chance.

NF: What were some of your prior game projects?

JG: Basically, I was touching every single title that was coming out for the TurboGrafx16. The very first day I worked, I remember doing a voice recording for a game called Gundam. One of the next games was Ys Book 1 & 2. Any game that came out of Hudson that was bound for the US or Europe, I basically had somewhat of a hand in. Everything that had to be done on a foreign perspective kind of fell into my lap.

NF: Why did you choose to remake BurgerTime?

JG: BurgerTime, for us, was an obvious choice. It was our number one mobile title at Hudson. I was really shocked. It did better than Bonk and Bomberman by a magnitude. So, one of the first things I did, when we started MonkeyPaw was to go after that license, because I knew the game was pulling in that many users as it was. We already had the relationship, which made it easier to secure the license. The game started development at the beginning of 2010, and we are coming to fruition now.

NF: What types of changes to BurgerTime have you made in the remake?

JG: The game is simple, yet very addictive. The problem is that it is a 30-year old game. We think that keeping a game the way it is and just redoing the graphics is not enough. Users would like to see the old classics and play the hook again, but they do not want to see that in 1980 graphics or presentation. They want to see it in something that is about today’s hardware. The actual playing field of the game had one screen, so we decided to put it on a rotating cylinder in order to create a 3D image for the game. It allows you to see through the cylinder to see what is going on behind the cylinder. In multiplayer, this helps to see what other players are doing. You can also see the baddies coming around the corner. You can kind of get more of a three-dimensional view and also grasp of the game by inserting this new concept. We wanted to leave the mechanic and AI alone; we just expanded the playing field. The best thing that I think we have done is make it multiplayer. That makes it so much more fun to play in a competitive atmosphere.

NF: Could you elaborate on the multiplayer?

JG: We are limited on the Wii side. There is only local multiplayer on the Wii, but the other versions (PSN/XBLA) will have online. That is just the constraint of the hardware.

NF: Are there any other differences between the WiiWare version and the others?

JG: Yeah, less levels, basically. We couldn’t fit as much on. A few less boss characaters, which is a new feature. We tried to keep as much as we could, but everybody knows that is not really possible. You can only put so much. Compared to other examples, I feel like we have a lot on there.

NF: Are there any new features you are particularly excited about?

JG: I think this rotational axis gives this game a new life. It is no longer just a puzzle game. It really has this much bigger platform aspect. We need to satisfy the core, but we have to be aware that there are a number of people who have never even heard of BurgerTime. So, for those users, we want to make the game much more accessible. We included things like a rocket that you need to climb certain levels. We have added more baddies and boss characters too. It is about complexity today; you have to keep the attention span going for a much longer time.

NF: Can you explain the DLC for BurgerTime HD?

JG: The DLC is not huge, because we did not design the game around it, which a lot of guys are doing these days. We are putting out the game, and of course we will have things like extra levels and some different characters, but it is not going to be a driver. It will be supplemental for people who want to delve deeper and play the game longer.

NF: Will DLC be available for all platforms, including WiiWare?

JG: There will be some for every platform, but they will be different. Levels and characters are things we can do accross all platforms.

We would like to thank Mr. Greiner for taking some time to speak with us about BurgerTime, his history in the gaming industry, and the future of MonkeyPaw Games. Be sure to check out the full interview in our downloadable podcast. BurgerTime HD will be released in Summer 2011, so please stay tuned to NintendoFuse for further development about BurgerTime HD.

Ray Almeda, of MonkeyPaw, also stated that “If any BurgerTime fans, MonkeyPaw Games fans, or hardcore gamers out there have suggestions on what retro titles they would like revisited, you can follow MonkeyPaw Games on Twitter (@MonkeyPawGames) or LIKE Facebook.com/monkeypawgames.”

Epic's Mike Capps: Game industry at 'an inflection point'

by on Apr 20th 2011 10:15PM

According to Epic president Mike Capps, the times are definitely a-changing for the games industry. Capps recently told Industry Gamers that the future of the games industry has not been so "uncertain" in twenty years. He questioned whether or not physical retail distribution of games will still exist in five to ten years, what will become of next-generation consoles and how PC gaming will fare.

His number one concern, however, seems to be the current trend of incredibly cheap mobile games. The one thing "killing" traditional game creators, said Capps, is "dollar apps," adding that it could be hard to sell a $60 game to a consumer used to paying pennies.

Capps isn't the first traditional game creator to express concern over the ever-growing stream of cheap games. During a GDC keynote earlier this year, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had harsh words for inexpensive mobile games, asking whether or not they really offer a "high value." Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime recently offered similar comments, noting that Nintendo isn't interested in publishing the work of inexperienced developers, a stark contrast to the relatively open publishing structures in iOS and Android development.

Of course, mobile developers aren't keeping quiet. Peter Vesterbacka, head of Angry Birds developer Rovio, recently fired back at Fils-Aime, stating that it made sense for traditional game publishers to defend their "$49 piece of plastic." For what it's worth, while Capps admits that times are uncertain, they are also "exciting" for developers and publishers that make the right choices. In other words, there's going to be a showdown.

DJ Hero 2 gets even more 5weet jam5 from Benassi, Deadmau5

by on Apr 19th 2011 11:01AM

The mysteriously replenishing spring of DJ Hero 2 DLC has turned out yet another batch of downloadable mixmasterpieces -- and it might just be the most danceable selection of new additions to date. Well, we're assuming they possess a high danceability, considering the dance-centric lineage of their inventors: There's a track by Benny Benassi, Deadmau5 and Yolanda Be Cool and DCUP, all of which have been remixed by the folks at FreeStyleGames.

We've contacted Activision to find out exactly how many mashed-up downloadables they've got left in the chamber. Hopefully, the answer is "a lot" -- we're still waiting on pins and needles for that totally dope Crosby, Stills and Nash remix. For now, check out this week's new additions after the jump.

Madden NFL 12 will launch on August 30, regardless of NFL lockout

by on Apr 13th 2011 1:45PM

Despite the ongoing situation between the NFL and Players Association, which could ultimately mean no football this year, EA Sports president Peter Moore quelled doubts at a recent event. The situation will not affect his studio's hit football franchise's next installment, Madden NFL 12.

"We'll be shipping this year, regardless of what the labor issues are, whether they're resolved or not," Moore told a group of journalists during an EA Sports event last night in San Francisco. "Madden 12 will be shipping on August 30th 2011, regardless of what happens with the league itself." So, there you have it. You may not get to see your players hit the field in real-life this year, but you can rest assured you'll be seeing their virtual representations, right on schedule.

Donkey Kong Country Returns in papercraft form

by on Apr 20th 2011 12:00AM

This Donkey Kong Country Returns diorama perfectly captures the essence of the game: DK and Diddy are bravely attempting to grab a puzzle piece, and are about to be killed by an annoying enemy.

You can capture this moment of impending failure for yourself. Desktop Gremlins posted a PDF template for the papercraft, so with some scissors, glue, and a bit of careful work, you can build your very own little gorilla diorama.

[MULTI] Telltale adds another project to their long list

[MULTI] Telltale adds another project to their long list [Image: game-news-image-2011-28e51b1ea841bbf557b...aaf981.jpg]
That's right, folks. Telltale Games have added another project to their quickly growing list of in-development projects. This time it comes via a partnership with NBC Universal to develop a game based on Law & Order: LA.

Featuring the characters from the popular TV show, Telltale are saying that there'll be a heavy focus on interrogations and criminal investigations, with a nice healthy shot of courtroom drama to really help capture the feel of the show.

Are you excited for an episodic Law & Order: LA game from Telltale? Or should they focus on their many other games?

Pokémon Sells 2.5 Million to Lead March U.S. Portable Sales

It looks like March 2011 was not a bad time for Nintendo’s portable market. Pokémon White & Black sold 2.5 million copies combined, the DS family of systems sold more then 460,000, and Wii sold 290,000. The official press release is posted below with all the details, including information on upcoming titles and 3DS firmware updates.

POKÉMON GAMES SELL NEARLY 2.5 MILLION IN NINTENDO’S BEST MARCH IN U.S. FOR PORTABLE HARDWARE

April 14, 2011

The new Nintendo 3DS™ system combined with the Nintendo DS™ family of systems to make last month the best-selling March in U.S. history for Nintendo’s portable hardware business, according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States.

After only one week on sale following its March 27 launch, Nintendo 3DS sold just shy of 400,000 units. Propelled by sales of more than 1.3 million Pokémon™ White Version games and more than 1.1 million Pokémon™ Black Version games, the Nintendo DS family of systems topped all home and portable video game systems in March, with more than 460,000 sold.

“Both Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo DS family had a strong month, indicating that Nintendo has something for everyone,” said Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo of America’s senior director of Corporate Communications. “Nintendo provides people with the best video game experiences, from 3D visuals without special glasses to a touch-screen interface to motion controls.”

Nintendo’s Wii™ console sold more than 290,000 in the United States in March, giving Nintendo combined hardware sales of more than 1.1 million for the month. The upcoming Wii Play™: Motion game launches on June 13 and will have players smiling as they use their Wii Remote™ Plus controller (or Wii Remote™ with Wii MotionPlus™ accessory) in 12 new motion-controlled games. Wii Play: Motioncomes packaged with a black Wii Remote Plus controller to deliver great value, precise motion control and immersive social fun that anyone in the household can pick up and instantly enjoy.

As Nintendo 3DS heads into its first full month of sales, a number of milestones are on the horizon to keep momentum going:

• A free future system update will provide Nintendo 3DS owners with an Internet browser and access to the Nintendo eShop, which will bring consumers a broad variety of downloadable software as well as video game trailers, screen shots and related information. The system update also delivers a solution for Nintendo DSi™ and Nintendo DSi XL™ owners to easily transfer most of their Nintendo DSiWare™ games to their new Nintendo 3DS systems.

• On June 19, The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ 3D introduces a completely re-mastered version of an epic entry in the beloved The Legend of Zelda game series. The game couples phenomenally enhanced graphics, stunning glasses-free 3D visuals, a touch-screen interface and newly implemented motion controls to provide a fresh experience. The game will also feature new challenges not included in the original game. The Legend of Zelda veterans can look forward to the Master Quest – a second quest with revamped puzzles and redesigned dungeons that feature the same graphical and interface upgrades as the main game.

• Later this summer, Netflix members who own a Nintendo 3DS system and can access a broadband wireless Internet connection will be able to instantly watch TV episodes and movies streaming from Netflix directly to their Nintendo 3DS systems. A Netflix unlimited membership is required.

Zumba keeps on dancing atop UK charts

by on Apr 18th 2011 9:15AM

Zumba Fitness, which recently launched on Wii, has been working out in the top spot on the UK sales charts for a second week. With Zumba Fitness on the lips (and working those hips) of the populace, the Xbox 360 version also saw a 14 percent sales increase.

Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars and Crysis 2 dueled for second, but ultimately the multiplatform blockheads used The Force to push the billion-dollar nanosuit down into third.

Chart-Track notes that the upcoming Easter holiday spurred plenty of retailer sales, which likely contributed to strong sales increases of Call of Duty: Black Ops (+62%, #9), Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (+112%, #11) and Red Dead Redemption (+458%, #13). Head past the break for the top ten.

Rumor: 'Multiple sources' claim new Nintendo console reveal at or before E3 [update]

by on Apr 14th 2011 3:34PM

Rumors of a "Wii 2" or "Wii HD" have been flying since ... well, pretty much since the Wii launched, but when an outlet the size of Game Informer piles on, it's tough not to take notice.

The publication says it's hearing from multiple sources that Nintendo will announce a new home console at or before E3. According to hearsay, the console would arrive in 2012 and would sport HD graphics, though GI's sources are conflicted about how said graphics would compare to the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Well, there goes our "Schedule Vacations for E3 Week When All The Video Game Journalist Resorts Are Super Empty" plan.

Update: IGN found some anonymous sources of its own, who claim that the new console will be backwards compatible with all Wii games. Its sources say that the console is "significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360."

Rumor: Nintendo courting Rockstar for Wii 2 development

by on Apr 19th 2011 3:00PM

The "Wii 2" rumors are raging again, for sure, but now they're in danger of burning out of control -- so let's backtrack. After delivering some spot-on NGP specs days before Sony's official unveiling ceremony, French tech site 01net earned its web cred. That's why the games media took notice (and some even corroborated) when the wonder site reignited the Wii successor rumors last Thursday, and then tossed in some more fuel the following day.

This week, 01net has come out with another intriguing report about Nintendo's supposed next console: Rockstar's on board. The site's sources claim that the Grand Theft Auto creator is the first confirmed company to secure a developer unit of the new Nintendo hardware. The sources add that the system, said to be codenamed "Project Cafe," is expected to be released in June 2012. And here's where the rumor starts to grow more wild.

Gamekyo somewhat carelessly throws out there that Grand Theft Auto 5 is also rumored for 2012 -- is it? (There's at least been some recent evidence that the next GTA is in the works.) And then, GoNintendo fits it all together: "Rockstar has a dev kit [...] working on GTA V (which is sure to hit PS3/360 as well) [...] hoping to have it available at launch." Eureka? Not quite.

But, boy, if Nintendo is on the verge of announcing the one console to rule them all and has a Rockstar logo to flaunt during the presentation? Talk about printing money ...

Impressions – XStylus Crayon

The XStylus crayon. I received this guy in the mail about a week ago and well, we got off to a bad start. I didn’t know if we were compatible with each other, but I’m glad to say we have spent a lot of time talking and have worked things out.

First off, I would like to let you all know that these are my impressions of a prototype of the XStylus Crayon. I haven’t noticed any changes to the final design yet, but know that it could change at anytime. Now on to my impressions!

Alright, the Xstylus Crayon…

What makes this stylus special is it’s ability to become both wider and longer through a simple movement. When extended, it has the width of a standard #2 pencil which is great. The length is just a tad longer than the 3DS stylus which means it sits in your hand like a pencil as well. You just have to simply flip the center piece and voilà!

As I mentioned, my first hour or two of use was quite awkward.  I had a very difficult time trying to figure out how to hold the stylus so that it was comfortable for me to use. I tried placing my fingers in a ton of different arrangements and found none of them to be a superior experience to hold compared to the traditional DS stylus. But wait, I didn’t give up just yet. I placed my fingers in one last spot and they let out a pleasant eek of joy . There is only one sweet spot to hold the stylus and be comfortable, and I had finally found it!

After finding the sweet spot, I went on to play a few hours of Trauma Center. I had an easier time moving around the screen which helps a LOT in a game where accuracy and speed determines your success.  I still did fail a few missions, but i’ll take the blame for those. I did notice that the lip on the Xstylus where I would place my thumb would press into my skin and leave an indentation but it only became bothersome after around two hours of playing.

The XStylus Crayon uses Polycarbonate plastic which makes it very durable. I tried everything I could from bending to mushing it together and it always bounced back to it’s original form. I was very pleased with how it stood up to all of my attempts to try to get something to break. Of course, I didn’t try and murder the thing, just some normal stress tests as you can see below. You can be assured that this stylus can withstand some abuse.

It’s great to see 3rd parties develop alternative peripherals for the DS family, especially when they are superior to the stock parts. If you own a DS lite, DSi, DSiXL, or 3DS system, the XStylus Crayon will fit snugly into the stylus slot. If you would like to support GREENBULB and purchase the XStylus Crayon, you can head over here to get a set of four for only fifteen U.S. dollars. That is only $3.75 each which is the same price you can purchase a replacement stylus directly from Nintendo.

If you have any questions about the stylus or want to know about something I did not cover, feel free to leave a comment and i’ll try to answer you as best I can.
