[PS3] Review Roundup - Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception

[PS3] Review Roundup - Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
[Image: game-news-image-2011-1bd7b5f149ef70aaa4b...783e9a.jpg]Game Informer - 9.5/10 - "Around the edges of Uncharted 3, there’s the vague sense that things are a bit too pat, that it’s all beginning to feel a little formulaic. You could draw comparisons to Call of Duty, another series that relies heavily on high production values and popcorn-movie bombast. However, Uncharted 3 still affects me, not only because it’s such sublime fun, but because it’s telling the tale of characters I have a real affection for. In the end, you hope Drake makes it out of his latest impossible predicament, that Sully lives to deliver another wry one-liner, and that maybe – just maybe – Drake and Elena will finally settle down. Uncharted 3 is one of the biggest, most impressive games ever made, but the scene that stuck with me the most was a small one: a tired Drake resting his head on Elena’s lap and saying, 'I’m sorry.'"

GameTrailers - 9.5/10 - "Uncharted 3’s perfectly-balanced gameplay variety and extraordinary scenarios make it easy to overlook its few shortcomings. Its near-perfect sequence of peaks and valleys demonstrates how restraint can imbue some moments with increased impact. It's a short campaign, but the multiplayer makes it worth the asking price.. Drake's Deception is one of those games that has something for just about everyone, and if you own a PlayStation 3 it shouldn't be missed."

1UP - A - "Uncharted 3 doesn't reinvent the wheel after 2009's superb game of the year, but manages to present its own set of unique moments and gameplay. The player-driven action sequences are memorable. The subtle layers of dialogue and character interactions are impressive. And ultimately, the eight-hour campaign experience provided plenty of harrowing escapes and charm. And after all that you've still got a competent multiplayer experience packed in too. Developer Naughty Dog continues to prove they are masters of their craft, and the third chapter of Uncharted is a fun and rewarding adventure that's easily one of the best games this year."

IGN - 10/10 - "IGN defines a 10.0 -- a masterpiece -- as 'the pinnacle of gaming, a masterpiece may not be flawless, but it is so exceptional that it is hard to imagine a game being better.' That's Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. From start to finish, single player to multiplayer, this game sings. The characters, the graphics, the sound, the story – they’re all top notch. If you’re willing to skip Uncharted 3, be prepared to miss one of gaming’s finest moments."

Joystiq - 4.5/5 - "It's just an inch further from perfection than Among Thieves -- but that's still closer than most game franchises get within their lifetimes. Moment to moment, it outshines just about every other game on the market, and while it doesn't exactly break the action-adventure mold, it fills it with such practiced substance that you don't really mind the familiarity of its shape."

[Multi] NFL Blitz is Back!

[Multi] NFL Blitz is Back!
[Image: game-news-image-2011-5f27811e6a26dc98531...9da9c4.jpg]
Football-loving (and even most non-football-loving) gamers old enough to remember the late 1990s and early 2000s will surely remember Midway's popular over-the-top football action in the NFL Blitz series. The games, particularly the early ones, were renowned for their brutally over-the-top tackles, WWE-style elbow drops and leg drops after the whistle, zany touchdown celebrations, and arcade-style gameplay that includes 30-yard first downs and players catching on fire. Unfortunately, after Electronic Arts scored exclusive rights to the NFL license, the Blitz games died out save for a couple of Blitz: The League titles that received a more lukewarm reception.

EGM has revealed that the series is about to make a comeback courtesy of Electronic Arts and Madden developer EA Tiburon. The new title, which is expected to be released in time for the NFL playoffs (which kick off in January 2012), will feature all of the wacky violence of the original along with a plethora of new game modes. One new feature is the introduction of "Blitz Bucks", which allow players to purchase packs of football cards that unlock new players, power-ups, cheats, and other features. Also new to the franchise is "Blitz Gauntlet", a game mode in which players play several matches in succession, each earning players Blitz Bucks and unlockable characters like zombies and real, actual lions. Of course, there will also be a fairly robust online component in NFL Blitz as well.

Neither platforms nor an exact release date were specified, but make sure to keep an eye out for NFL Blitz shortly after the New Year.

Picture it: a Luigi's Mansion horror flick in the vein of The Blair Witch Project. We're kinda on board with the concept presented here, even if these guys overlooked the potentially lucrative Hoover tie-in.

Nintendo News: Drive Home the Fun and Race with Fans Around the Globe with Mario Kart 7 for Nintendo 3DS

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– The upcoming Mario Kart™ 7 game for the portable Nintendo 3DS™ system delivers more than just a glasses-free 3D racing experience. Mario Kart 7 delivers frenetic racing fun by air, land and sea. Longtime fans of the franchise will encounter new features and customization options, while newcomers will love racing with their favorite Mushroom Kingdom characters against opponents near and far.

At the heart of Mario Kart is multiplayer racing. Using a broadband Internet connection or local wireless built into the Nintendo 3DS, players can race against their own friends or even against opponents worldwide. The new Community feature allows players to create groups with other Mario Kart fans while setting up specific rules to make customized racing environments. Easy setup allows players to quickly create a community and share with others via the StreetPass™ feature. Community leaderboards will also show the most up-to-date information from recent races. Solo players can race through the Grand Prix and Time Trial modes using either the Circle Pad layout or the motion-sensitive gyro controls of the system to steer their karts. The gyro controls also allow players to control their karts in a first-person perspective, a feature never before seen in the Mario Kart franchise.

Mario Kart 7 will also use StreetPass and SpotPass™ features built into the Nintendo 3DS system. Walking by other Mario Kart 7 players in real life with StreetPass enabled allows gamers to exchange racing scores, win/loss records, number of collected coins and other game data. With SpotPass enabled, players will be able to receive ghost data to race against. Up to seven ghosts can be downloaded at the same time, allowing for a full eight-player race. Additionally, a Mario Kart channel will be a central location for players to view information collected through StreetPass and SpotPass.

Every iteration of the Mario Kart series introduces new twists and turns, and this newest Mario Kart game is no different. New playable characters include Metal Mario from the Super Mario 64™ game and Lakitu, the spectacled cloud-riding Koopa. Players can also choose to race as their own Mii™ characters. New power-ups include the Fire Flower and Super Leaf. The Fire Flower allows players to throw blazing balls of fire at other drivers, while the Super Leaf makes the Tanooki Tail appear on the back of karts to knock other drivers and items out of the way. And, of course, the karts come equipped with gliders for maneuvering through the air and propellers for underwater propulsion.

The Mushroom Cup and Flower Cup introduce eight new courses, including ones on Wuhu Island and one created by Retro Studios set in the jungles from the Donkey Kong Country™ Returns game. The Shell Cup and Banana Cup feature eight classic courses, including Luigi’s Mansion from the Nintendo DS™ and Koopa Beach from the Nintendo 64™. There will be 16 new courses and 16 classic courses total.

[X360] Review Roundup - Forza Motorsport 4

[X360] Review Roundup - Forza Motorsport 4
[Image: game-news-image-2011-50583e399e1c84eab80...e02873.jpg]1UP - A- - "While Kinect support is definitely not Forza 4's greatest strength, there's still plenty to admire here. World Tour mode presents some of the best pacing in the genre, and slowly gives the player confidence to tackle driving high performance cars. A bevy of tuning options and accessories provide car buffs some with fun ways to experiment, and the robust livery editor can turn them into individual pieces of art. But the best part of Forza 4 is that you don't have to be a professional race car driver, artist, or tuner to truly enjoy the entire package. The game succeeds at bringing the bar down so everyone can feel a sense of accomplishment. And that level of accessibility is something more hardcore simulators should aspire to be. "

Eurogamer - 9/10 - "The series' steely heart has softened, revealing a game that's as exhaustive as it is exhilarating and that's now been infused with a little extra passion. Forza has always been a series to admire, but now it's a little easier to fall in love with it too."

Game Informer - 9.25/10 - "Racing games have always strived to strike that balance between being a virtual showroom for car lovers (see the well-done and informative Autovista mode for that) and actually being fun, compelling experiences. Forza 4 successfully bridges this gap and is the racer you’ve been waiting for."

IGN - 9.5/10 - "Like the step up from FIFA 11 to FIFA 12, there's no going back to Forza 3 now. The changes and updates are too welcome and widespread. The improved visuals, the added cars on track, the wealth of new race types, the tweaked AI and closer racing, the ferocious sound and superior sense of speed, the even better livery editor, the lot. With Forza 4 Turn 10 has crafted a driving game like no other; it's hands-down this generation's premier racing simulator."

GameTrailers - 9.4/10 - "While marketing teams reveled in the game's most casual features, Forza Motorsport 4 has gone not only broader but much deeper as well. The glossy exteriors are truly matched by a beast under the hood, and while it isn't the end-all, be-all of racing games, it's the best at what it does."

Spooky Savings: Amazon's 'Un-BOO-lievable' Halloween sale

by on Oct 23rd 2011 11:30AM

Autumnal consumerism is usually linked with holidays based around turkeys and/or trees, but that hasn't stopped Amazon from conjuring up some scary-good deals to celebrate All Hallow's Eve.

The available gambit of creepy-eepy savings is fairly all-inclusive, ranging from Halloweenish gore-fests like Dead Island, Rise of Nightmares and Left 4 Dead, to the more subtle, yet still emotionally horrifying Catherine. There are a few odd-balls in there like Dead or Alive Dimensions and Duke Nukem Forever, although we suppose Duke is terrifying in a more abstract sense of the word.

GameFly's 'Under $20' sale has too many good values

by on Oct 19th 2011 6:00AM

LA Noire for $19.99? Dead Space 2 for $12.99? Vanquish for just $9.99? If watching broadcast news wasn't enough to convince you that the US economy is down in the dumps, GameFly's impressive "Under $20" sale is here to hammer the point home.

Everything from the aforementioned trio of titles to Disney Epic Mickey (and many more) are currently available from GameFly's insane sale, all being offered with free shipping. The discounts expire on October 24, so we'd suggest you get on that -- if you're not too busy zipping around Gotham, of course.

[PC] Review Roundup - Battlefield 3

[PC] Review Roundup - Battlefield 3
[Image: game-news-image-2011-4d27eff1629b302601a...48241f.png]Joystiq - 4.5/5 - "In a way, your choice should be simple. If solo play is your primary motivator, then it's hard to recommend Battlefield 3 as anything more than an audio-visual treat. The times where Battlefield 3 does its damnedest to go toe-to-toe with Call of Duty are the times it stumbles the hardest. But when DICE is doing what it's always done best, Battlefield 3 is a uniquely mesmerizing multiplayer game with a seemingly endless number of ways to feel like a success. It's not revolutionary, but it's the best Battlefield game, and that's saying a lot."

IGN - 9/10 - "When you shut down Battlefield 3 and let the Frostbite 2-powered dust settle, it certainly has some problems. But DICE’s adoration of and expertise with the online experience permeates every aspect of its multiplayer. Regardless of the narrative missteps or the occasional glitches, Battlefield 3 offers an unforgettable, world-class multiplayer suite that's sure to excite shooter fans, whether they fired their first bullet in Battlefield 1942 or have just now heeded Battlefield's call of duty."

1UP - A- - "Battlefield 3 is a game that's informed, not bound, by both its predecessors and its competition. It takes what made the series great in earlier games and marries it to the innovations from more recent BF titles. The single-player and co-op campaigns both have their issues, but the multiplayer component is worth the price of entry alone. "

GameTrailers - 9.2/10 - "Battlefield 3 is a lot like prior games in the series. It features a stellar multiplayer suite with practically limitless replay value and a mostly forgettable campaign. The coop missions are a nice addition, and to be fair, the single-player is the best in series history, but it still falls short of its contemporaries. Online warfare is intricate and rewarding, but it also presents a learning curve and a strong reliance on team coordination. Enough can't be said about the presentation of the PC version as it carries its own levels of reward. Battlefield 3 rewards those who truly enlist."

Game Informer - 9.5/10 - "Battlefield fans hoping for the most polished entry in the series won’t be disappointed by this massive sequel. Multiplayer maintains the high level of quality DICE is known for, and the campaign is the best in franchise history. Outside of the annoying Battlelog and a tacked-on, uninspired co-op mode consisting of six short standalone missions, the only downside to Battlefield 3 is the lack of substantial changes to the multiplayer formula. However, that shouldn’t stop longtime fans and newcomers from enjoying one of the best FPS experiences in gaming."

RE: [Wii] A Pair of Skyward Sword Gameplay Trailers for Twice the Awesome
I'm excited about skyward sword, but ( me being left handed and all ) I don't think it'll be better than twilight princess.

it's a prequal to ocarina of time, which means,
no epona
no ganondorf
Link doesn't even have the triforce
I even heared that Zelda isn't even a princess in this game, just an ordinary citizen, which also means, no sheik, and if that's true I'd hope smash would stick to the twilight princess costumes for SSBU.
and one other thing, if it's a prequal to OoT then where does Link get the hero's clothing from, if there has been no hero?

still despite all that I still desperately want this game.

I think you're taking the whole "prequel" thing a bit too literally. While the Zelda series has a loose chronology out of necessity, most of the games have little or nothing to do with one another in terms of the story. The timeline of the series spans centuries with many different iterations of Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf (Twilight Princess is supposedly set 100+ years after Ocarina of Time, as is Wind Waker). Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, Epona, the Triforce, etc. are staples in nearly every Zelda game and they will be in Skyward Sword too (except maybe Epona). [Image: default.png]

I never said I wasn't looking forward to it, or that it wasn't good, plus the Zelda timeline gets a bit confusing , still now i've seen some more of it and researched the gameplay i'm thinking this may actually have a chance of being better than TP, but i'm still confused over how Link gets the hero's clothes if there has been no hero, but that doesn't matter. still I prefer it when ganondorf is the main threat. plus I prefered the looks of the TP characters that skyward swords. yeah, well storyline aside were forgetting the most important problem on the list I posted earlier , I'm left handed and the game has been announced to have to use ur right hand more. I'm terrible with my right hand I once wrote my name with my right hand and then did the same with my foot, u could read the writing better in the one written by the foot. NintendoWare Weekly: Catrap, 101-in-1

by on Oct 13th 2011 4:15PM

Deceptively big numbers abound (as big numbers tend to do) on Nintendo's download services this week. 101-in-1 Explosive Megamix collects entirely too many games in a single pack on WiiWare, and 1001 Blockbusters provides a similarly excessive number of block-breaking levels on DSiWare.

On 3DS, there's an obscure, but interesting Game Boy puzzle called Catrap, which is actually about puzzles that you can accidentally trap yourself in -- and not rapping cats. If you're looking for something more passive to do with your 3DS, there's a new "Night of the Living Carrots" short starring characters from Monsters vs. Aliens on the Nintendo Video service.

WiiWare 101-in-1 Explosive Megamix (Nordcurrent, 1 player, 700 Wii Points): 101 minigames in a single WiiWare download, based on a DS game of the same name. Infer what you will about the quality of each mini-minigame.Demo: FAST Racing League (Shin'en, 1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points): Get a quick look at this futuristic racer.3DS eShop Catrap (Game Boy) (Nintendo, 1 player, $2.99): Clear obstacles from a series of mazes, with a "rewind" function if you trap yourself.DSiWare Furry Legends (Gamelion, 1 player, $4.99/500 DSi Points): A side-scrolling puzzle platformer based on the WiiWare Furry Legends game.1001 Blockbusters (Selectsoft, 1 player, $1.99/200 DSi Points): No, this isn't another multi-minigame collection -- it's a Breakout-type game with 1001 levels.

London Philharmonic records game music album

by on Oct 12th 2011 11:00PM

The London Philharmonic Orchestra hasn't been shy about getting involved with popular culture, and will release a video game soundtrack album on November 8. Game Informer reports the album, The Greatest Video Game Music, includes 21 tracks with a mix of fan favorites from the past three decades.

The album covers Super Mario to Angry Birds, with less whimsical efforts like Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty and Fallout 3 in there too. You can get a taste of the album with Hans Zimmer's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 theme here.

[Image: game-news-image-2011-d1df7817e6b224042a1...574bb0.jpg]IGN - 8.5/10 - "The great controls and useful weapon upgrades help make Rage's shooting parts a lot of fun, but the storyline fails to create any real tension and the game's characters, friendly and hostile, never do or say anything memorable. As a result, Rage starts to drag toward the second half after most of the mechanics and upgrades are introduced because the fictional world isn’t very interesting. Despite the lack of genuinely exciting context, all the content packed into Rage is still a blast to play, including the surprisingly entertaining car combat mode and co-operative challenges. Rage isn’t revolutionary, but is an expertly crafted, beautiful shooter."

Eurogamer - 8/10 - "Judged on game design and content, then, it's slightly anachronistic, but as a toy box full of things you can only do in games, Rage is warm-hearted and refreshing. It's not going to change the world, but it does serve as a timely reminder of that other thing id Software games always did besides smashing through some new technological barrier."

Gamespot - 8/10 - "That honor belongs to the lengthy campaign, which can last upward of 20 hours for avid racers and diligent questers. Though the story gets a bit too cliched, there is a robust amount of adventuring to be done in a world that rewards you for your attentions. Rage is a beautiful game that looks equally stunning with or without the hefty installation (which reduces the load times and is optional on the 360 but required on the PS3), so regardless of which platform you play on, you'll find a rich and rewarding adventure that sets a new visual standard for the postapocalyptic wasteland."

1UP - B - "It's nothing revolutionary. It comes from a different kind of Id, one that would rather play with existing conventions than reinvent them. Conversely, it's the same Id that puts look and feel on the same high pillar, and it's impossible to call Rage badly-composed. I just don't think it's going to be remembered as anything but a sleeper hit of the fall of 2011."

Destructoid - 7/10 - "RAGE is fast food, the kind of fast food that looks much more satisfying on the menu than it does once served. It's tasty, for sure, but you'll be starving almost as soon as you've finished. By no means is RAGE not worth your time -- it looks stunning, the combat on both wheels and foot is fun, and there's a tremendous sense of atmosphere that deserves to be experienced. However, RAGE's quality only makes its lack of ambition more painful in the long run, as it could easily have been better than it is. It's a good game, most definitely, and one that id fans will enjoy ... just don't expect it to do half of what it looks like it can do."

[PC, PS3, X360] Rumour: More Dead Space 3 plot details sneak out

[PC, PS3, X360] Rumour: More Dead Space 3 plot details sneak out
The mole that shed some potential light on what we can expect from Dead Space 3 is at it again according to a new report from Siliconera. This time the mole delves into some more detail about the mental state of Isaac Clarke, who has had his fair share of psychological trauma throughout both Dead Space 1 and Dead Space 2.

It is worth noting that if these end up being true, then the rest of the text could be considered hypothetical spoilers. So tread lightly.

[Image: game-news-image-2011-c3a70eca4cf5160c7dd...fecccd.png]
It sounds like Isaac's own worst enemy will be himself this time, with the mole alluding to the existence of a 'Shadow Isaac' in Dead Space 3. A split personality who will actively be pointing out flaws in Isaac Clarke as the game progresses as well as taunting him at any given chance. One such example is that later in the game Isaac falls into a tunnel, to which Shadow Isaac calls him an 'idiot'. He'll complain that this rescue mission isn't his mission and Shadow Isaac will remind him he turns his back on all the wrong things. And, by the sounds of it, just being a downright jerk throughout the game.

It'll be interesting to see if this ends up being a part of the game, considering his past hang-ups on Nicole from Dead Space 1 this does kind of seem like the next obvious step. We shall continue to await official word from EA as always. Hopefully we'll hear something sooner rather than later, I'm craving another hit of Dead Space.
