Crysis 2 and 3DS premieres shake up UK top ten

by on Mar 28th 2011 9:30AM

Crysis 2 and the Nintendo 3DS both disrupted the steady order of the UK all-formats charts last week, with Crytek's showcase shooter taking top spot in software. According to Chart-Track, the distribution of sales across formats for Crysis 2 gave 57 percent to Xbox 360, 29 percent to PS3 and 14 percent on PC -- of course, the company doesn't account for digital distribution, which would likely alter the PC figure.

Other chart-topping debuts last week included Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars in second and The Sims: Medieval in seventh. The 3DS premiere helped launch Super Street Fighter 4 3D Edition, Pilotwings Resort and Rayman 3D into the overall top ten, with Capcom's portable fighter winding up in fourth as the most popular launch title for the system. The 3DS version of Lego Star Wars 3 was the fifth most successful title for 3DS, just below Super Monkey Ball 3D.

Meanwhile, last week's chart-topper, Homefront, lost a little ground and fell back to third place. Check out the UK top ten after the break.

Nintendo Wii 2 set for E3 revelation?

March 7, 2011 Bookmark and Share

by Darren Allan

Rumours are circulating that Nintendo’s sequel to the Wii console might be unveiled at this year’s E3 in June.

But first off, let’s sound a note of caution regarding these whispers – they’re of the more wildly speculative variety.

Zelda Informer highlights the current theorising, which suggests a Wii 2 being unveiled at E3 with a quad-core processor, Blu-ray drive and some manner of built-in mobile projector to allow gamers to enjoy the console without a TV (with the image projected onto a white wall).

It all sounds a little far fetched to say the least. For starters, not everyone has a suitably white wall in their home. Or in the right place in their house – you might have one in the bathroom, but probably don’t want to play Super Mario Galaxy 14 while sat on the toilet. That could bring a whole new meaning to the phrase “motion controls”.

And for a mobile projector to be included, it would have to be a pretty low quality unit to keep the cost down, with an unimpressive image quality anyway. Blu-ray would push the cost of the hardware up further.

There’s also the fact that Nintendo has clearly said, as recently as last week, that the Wii sequel won’t be out any time soon (and it won’t be until the company judges that developers have run out of innovative ideas for the original Wii).

Given all this, we’d be very surprised if the rumour came to fruition, and there’s a definite whiff of freshly spread muck about this one.

Notre Dame students tie Wii to stroke patient rehab

To some, a Wii is a fun way to play virtual sports and video games. Students in a Notre Dame computer science course have found the game system also has the potential to help recovering stroke patients. The students have developed an application for the Wii that could help stroke patients regain their independence.

The students have partnered with Memorial Hospital to try out the "Wiihab" program. For stroke survivors, a key step in rehabilitation is regaining a sense of balance.

“I can tell them all day long, they're not putting enough weight on a leg,” said Sarah Kuzmicz, a Memorial Hospital physical therapist. “But they don't understand because they can't really see it or feel it. With the Wii system, it gives them the feedback. It shows them on the screen, ‘Wow! I'm really not putting very much weight on my leg.’”

Wiihab uses a regular Wii game system, a Wii Fit board, and connects to a computer through Bluetooth.

“I like it. It's fun doing it on the Wii Fit board,” said Carol Smith, a patient recovering from a stroke. “You can see your progress day to day when you watch the screen.”

“Most of them really get into it,” said Kuzmicz. “Even if they’ve never played the Wii system before, a lot of times they’ve seen their grandchildren play, so it kind of peeks their interests a lit bit.”

Kuzmicz said it also distracts patients from the idea of using a weak leg. “A lot of times patients have a fear of putting weight on a leg, so if you engage their mind in the game side of it, sometimes they’ll do more than they’d be willing to do if they were just focusing on that leg.”

“When I come here and see patients working with it, it makes me happy that my work can make a difference and help these patients to improve,” said Michael Kennedy, a Notre Dame grad student who is developing the program.

He uses feedback from the therapists to improve the software. Eventually, Aaron Striegel, the associate professor who teaches the Notre Dame course, hopes to see the system used in rehab centers across the country.

“It’s gone very well,” said Striegel. “The therapists have been delighted with the work. We’ve been excited to see how the patients interact with it. It’s been a real treat to see how everyone’s embraced the project and enjoyed it.”

Striegel said in the future the program could be developed for use with amputees learning to use a prosthetic leg or knee surgery patients.

Because of the low cost of the system, Striegel also foresees patients being able to take a Wiihab system home, enabling therapists to continue monitoring their progress.

Can 3D Save Nintendo In The Coming Years?

    3D Nintendo

The first question to ask is – does Nintendo need saving? I’m sure they still have plenty of reserves from all the money made from the Nintendo Wii hardware sales. Not to mention all the profit made from the accessories sold. However, 2010 wasn’t a stellar year for the company we love so much. The other consoles played catchup, and the hot trend of Wii ownership petered out. Not to mention Microsoft and Sony releasing motion control options for their perspective consoles.

Nintendo did have an ace up their sleeve, and it came during the E3 presentation earlier in the year. The Nintendo 3DS was announced, and with it came a handheld which would provide 3D gaming without the need of glasses. Amazement ensued.

Here we are in 2011, and the 3DS is a few months away from launch. The hype surrounding the system is still growing strong, as there has been announcements coming this week concerning more of the technical specs. Along with more information regarding the games coming out.

With all of this hype, one has to wonder if 3D will be the next shift for Nintendo. It is most definitely a technological feat to release a 3D handheld with the capabilities the 3DS will have. Could the handheld be a peak at what Nintendo has planned for the living room?

The whole 3D trend has been interesting to watch unfold. In the theaters, the prospect of 3D movie watching has been met with reactions from all across the spectrum. People have come to love it, some to hate it, while others believe it’s all about the quality of the movie and how the 3D is used. As for the video game world, there is 3D out there right now. However, it requires glasses and a whole lot of financial investment. Which is why it’s really not doing well at the moment.

The prospect of a glasses-less 3D television isn’t unheard of, though cost is still a major factor in the minds of consumers. One wonders if Nintendo is watching this all unfold while thinking up ideas for their next console. If they’re looking at releasing a console in the next 2-3 years, do trends show 3D televisions making more a push during this time? If this is the case, will Nintendo take that chance?

The problem with bringing 3D to a console, compared to a handheld, is Nintendo has no control over the display. How much of a market would Nintendo have selling only to 3D TV owning consumers?

While 3D gaming looks to be amazing on the 3DS, this author is highly skeptical as to the impact it will have in the living room. In the next 3-5 years anyway.

    Having Fun With Wii

Have you heard of the Wii? Well the Wii is a console game from Nintendo that makes use of motion sensing technology to create tons of fun for the family! There are all sorts of games for the Nintendo Wii that people can play with. So the fun part about the Wii console compared to the other gaming consoles is that there is plenty of interactivity. What you do with the Wii console is actually what will be done to your character in the game. Remember those days when the game console controllers are still attached to the console using wires? These days all this will be wireless but who would have thought that video games will have so much interactivity these days?

If you do not already know, there are now more than one such interactive consoles in the market. I guess many of you know about the Microsoft Kinect which does not even require the use of the controller, and of course the PlayStation Move which basically followed the Wii model. Despite these new consoles, I sincerely believe that the Wii is still the market leader with the best motion sensing capability since they were the first experts to come into this field.

Well I hope that this article has spurred your interest in purchasing a Wii console and trying out some Wii games. I can be honest with you that there are plenty of cheap games for the Nintendo Wii waiting to be bought so you need not be worried that you do not have the budget to have fun. Of course such video games are considered as luxury items but since you can find some cheap Wii games and have fun on a budget then why not? So do remember to buy your games before they run out of stock.

This article is written by Lincoln Tennyson, a person who simply loves Wii games. If you want to buy some Wii games, do not spend too much as you can always buy some cheap Wii games which will be less straining on that pocket. All the games which I have bought are pretty cheap and you can find all these cheap Wii games either online or in department stores.

    NintendoWare Weekly: Natsume Championship Wrestling

    by on Mar 21st 2011 1:55PM

We suspect the Wii and DSi Shops are going to go even darker than usual next week, with all of Nintendo's attention turned toward the 3DS. This is likely to be the last normal-ish release week until the late-May eShop update (prove us wrong, Nintendo!)

Today's update features a fairly obscure SNES wrestling game, which lacks a real wrestling license but does include four-player functionality. In addition, there's a demo for Dive: The Medes Islands Secret.

DSiWare features another budget G.G. Series game, this time a shooter featuring tanks, and a port of PC puzzler Shapo. We haven't played the game, so we can't comment on the actual quality, but "Shapo" is way fun to say in whatever manner you choose to pronounce it.
WiiWare Arcade Essentials (Nordcurrent, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): A collection of five games like, but legally distinct from, arcade favorites Qix, Galaxian, Q*Bert, Bust-a-Move, and Missile Command.Demo: Dive: The Medes Islands Secret (Cosmonaut Games, 1 player, 0 Wii Points): Take a little dip in search of treasure.Virtual Console Natsume Championship Wrestling (SNES, 1-4 players, 800 Wii Points): 4-player SNES wrestling, no multitap required.DSiWare G.G Series D-TANK (Genterprise, 1 player, 200 DSi Points): Destroy the enemy tanks targeting your base -- or take out the enemy's base -- in this vertically-scrolling tank shooter.Shapo (Tik Games, 1 player, 500 DSi Points): Place shapes into puzzles to balance them on a fulcrum.

    [3DS] Dream Trigger 3D – Screens

The top screen shows what may look like a standard one-screen shoot-’em-up that has been around since the days of Asteroids. The combat, however, is far more complex. The onscreen avatar couldn’t kill the enemies in their initial form — instead I had to drop a line of “sonar” panels (from a limited supply) that revealed their vulnerable state. These sonar panels will only launch when a timing bar passes over them, in the same way that blocks were destroyed in Lumines.

After the enemies were caught by the sonar, you could then attack by firing my avatar’s lasers and running into the enemies. If enemies were left untouched for too long, they’d explode into a barrage of lethal bullets. While it only takes a few enemies to fill the screen, the bullets moved fairly slow, allowing dexterous maneuvering to make up for subpar sonar/shooting skills.

The 3D visuals aren’t very extravagant, but they do allow for some unique gameplay elements. Particularly, powerups would start in the deep background, moving toward the screen slowly, only becoming attainable when they reached the same plane as my avatar. While the powerups can still be detected in 2D (there’s also an element of brightness that indicates if they can be picked up), it’s a bit more natural in 3D, and one of the more clever and subtle uses of the extra dimension.

Dream Trigger 3D has 50 levels spread across 10 environments. Each environment features different musical tracks (techno takes on public-domain classical music), with your onscreen avatar and the enemies changing, too. Some of the different forms for the player include a fish, a bird, a butterfly, a bio-hazard signal, and a flying creature reminiscent of the critters in Panzer Dragoon.

    Part 1:

    Part 2:

The story starts immediately after the events of the previous title ending with Michael Ford waking up after escaping the exploded Trust base on an off-shore oil rig. As Ford regains consciousness he is ambushed by two workers. As Ford continues through the complex, the surrounding areas and the complex itself are attacked by the Leviathan, an ancient sea monster. After Ford makes it to the top of the rig, he begins to fight the Leviathan. Ford uses the Trust’s mounted machines around the oil rig to attack the Leviathan and eventually spears it with a harpoon.

Ford must use Atlantis, a ship that Enlil, also known as John Adams in The Conduit’s universe, came to Earth in to go to various areas around the globe. It is revealed that aliens have secretly been controlling parts of Earth and Ford must gain their trust in the fight against the Trust.

Take it with a grain of salt but in a recent chat the head of Epic Games, Mark Capps, has talked about the potential of Gears of War on Sony's console.

"Do we wish we could take all those Killzone [players] and Resistance fans on PS3, and get them to say 'Gears is awesome'? Yeah, sure I'd love to ship the Gears trilogy on PlayStation. That would be fun. I want to be there; I want to be everywhere."

Capps then reiterates how thankful he is for Microsoft's involvement, citing that as the core reason for the IP's exclusivity on Microsoft's platform. He reminisced about the risk of first releasing Gears of War, considering they were the "Unreal studio" and were not actually known for making games. Capps wouldn't say if Gears of War would come to PS3 but he did say, "We definitely own Gears of War. This is our franchise, our IP". He then touches on Microsoft's support once again and praises their marketing team for their help whenever they've come to the 'what do we do next' point.

[PS3] Villain for Uncharted 3 is finally revealed

[PS3] Villain for Uncharted 3 is finally revealed [Image: game-news-image-2011-ec366ab970fbebfabae...043f98.jpg]
So, who exactly will you be opposing in Naughty Dog's upcoming Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception? You can stop guessing because it has been officially revealed on the PlayStation Blog.

Her name is Katherine Marlowe. She is the coldly calculating leader of a secret society who have roots dating back beyond four hundred years to the court of Queen Elizabeth I. She's apparently had a long-standing rivalry with Nathan Drake over Sir Francis Drake's ring, something they have both been contending for. The ring is also the key to an ancient mystery.

Accompanying the reveal was a cutscene that you'll be able to watch below. As you'll see, she is a much more intense enemy than what we've come to expect from Uncharted. It looks as though she will be using both psychological and physical tactics to get what she wants. The team of highly-trained agents are definitely a big plus as well.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is due out this November for Sony's PlayStation 3.

NINTENDO OF AMERICA HIRES NEW VICE PRESIDENT OF CORPORATE AFFAIRS

    March 1, 2011

Nintendo of America announces the hiring of a new vice president of Corporate Affairs. Cynthia Gordon, a PR expert with more than 20 years of experience in consumer brands, joins the company on March 14. Gordon comes to Nintendo from her position as a vice president at 360 PUBLIC RELATIONS in Boston, where she developed and executed consumer public relations campaigns and contributed to the advancement of the firm’s social media and digital efforts.

Gordon will work from Nintendo’s office in Redwood City, Calif, and will report to the executive vice president of Sales & Marketing, a vacant position that is currently being managed by Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime.

“Cindy brings a wealth of smart, strategic brand experience to our team,” Fils-Aime said. “As we prepare to launch our new Nintendo 3DS system on March 27, her expertise will help keep our momentum going strong through the rest of the year.”

Earlier in her career, Gordon ran public relations and new media for Universal Studios in Los Angeles and Orlando, Fla., where she launched The Simpsons Ride and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. She also oversaw all external and internal communications for Dunkin’ Donuts, Baskin-Robbins and Togo’s, and ran the Chrysler account for GolinHarris in Chicago, where she oversaw launches for Dodge and Jeep.

Gordon is a graduate of Tulane University, where she earned bachelor’s degrees in political science and French literature.

Super Meat Boy misses jump to Wii (falls into chainsaw)

    by on Mar 2nd 2011 11:55AM

Team Meat today finally laid to rest the troubled Wii version of Super Meat Boy. "We really tried hard to make this happen but not one publisher we talked to thought a retail budget title for the Wii would be profitable at this point in the Wii's life cycle," reads a missive on the Team Meat Blog, "and we totally understand that."

Initially planned as a WiiWare title, the Wii version of SMB grew beyond the size constraints of Nintendo's digital platform, and so Team Meat began to look into a box-copy release. Perhaps its spirit will live on in the "Ultra Edition" of SMB for PC.

[DS] Pokémon Black & White sales data is super effective against previous US records

[DS] Pokémon Black & White sales data is super effective against previous US records [Image: game-news-image-2011-b2b02d7c5ad73391a2d...c8ec2f.jpg]It seems to be becoming a trend now, out comes a new Pokémon title and suddenly records are broken. The previous record was held by Pokémon Diamond & Pearl, which managed to sell 780,000 copies on their first day of sale way back in 2007.

Well, now we can usher in a new record holder, Pokémon Black & White have taken that respectable figure and surpassed it. By how much I hear you ask? Well, Black & White managed to push out 1.08 million copies after being available for 24 hour period in America. Pretty astounding figures and concrete proof that the Pokémon franchise still has plenty of consumer pull.

For those who haven't looked into the new entries, they introduce 150 new critters for you to capture and they are set in an all new region (which seems a lot larger compared to the usual ones) with eight new gym leaders to battle and conquer. Plenty of time to sink in the new entries, and it is time well spent as well.

[GDC 11, 3DS] Super Mario logo shown, full reveal coming at E3

[GDC 11, 3DS] Super Mario logo shown, full reveal coming at E3 Besides showing us a new trailer for Skyward Sword, Iwata also gave us the first tiny details for the upcoming Super Mario title for the 3DS. Not much was announced, but we got a peek at a temporary logo (which seems to feature a raccoon tail on it) and discovered that the game is being worked on by the same team who gave us the Super Mario Galaxy games. He also mentioned that the game would get fully revealed at E3 in a few months. Can you decipher anything in particular from the screens below? And are you excited for another Mario game from the Galaxy team? [Image: game-news-image-2011-5bd301edb805e2a4f74...55c338.jpg]

RE: [GDC 11, 3DS] Super Mario logo shown, full reveal coming at E3 I was thinking about the potential for this to be kind of clunky like SM64DS was, but then I remembered; we're no longer restricted to just a D-pad. I found my wii!

RE: [GDC 11, 3DS] Super Mario logo shown, full reveal coming at E3 It seems like it'd be more reliable. I mean, if someone's a hardcore Mario player, they'd probably pull off amazing maneuvers with just the D-pad, a la SM64DS. As for compatibility, it would be foolish for them not to integrate the circle pad. I found my wii!

Nintendo Wii 2 launch planned for E3?

No sooner had GDC 2011 (Game Developer Conference) finished and tongues were wagging on what might be coming for E3 (in Los Angeles, starting 7 June). And the biggest question on everybody's lips was, will Nintendo use the show to launch its next game console? Skip related content

Certainly, Zeldainformer.com provides documentary proof that the Nintendo has the next generation machine in development, quoting CEO?Satoru Iwata's comments at a?Japanese investor Q&A session last year: "We are of course studying and developing the next console to Wii. However, there is a big difference between studying a product and announcing what it is and when we will release it."

And it claims that a source of the site is sure that E3 2011 will be the launch pad. It does, though, remain sceptical, at least of the rumoured specifications.

Apparently, the Nintendo Wii 2 will be Blu-ray-enabled with a quad-core processor. Plus - and this is the weirdest bit - it will have a projection unit in-built; it will be able to project its, presumably, high definition graphics onto a wall without the need for a separate device.

Admittedly, having played Wii games in 70-inches and above at demo events, it's great fun, but how many people will have a spare white wall handy for just such an occasion? And surely an LED lamp will bump up the price of the console enough to prevent those who would never use the feature from considering it.

That said, games console, Blu-ray player and in-built projection are compelling assets for those thinking of setting up their first home cinema.

Naturally, Pocket-lint will keep an ear to the ground for further ruminations.

Barf! River City Ransom 2 in the works, coming to consoles and PC

    by on Mar 18th 2011 10:55AM

River City Ransom 2We know a lot of you have been looking for closure for twenty long years. Where are Alex and Ryan now? What about River City High? Are Ryan and Cyndi still together?

Where is River City Ransom 2?

Japanese dev Miracle Kidz, comprised of some of the series' original developers, told Impress Watch (via Siliconera) that the sequel is in development for both consoles and PC. The console release should be "this summer" while PC owners will need to wait until "next year." There's no word on which consoles Miracle Kidz is targeting, but its River City Ransom-styled Downtown Smash Dodgeball is on Xbox Live Indie Games and being ported to WiiWare, so those two platforms seem as likely as any.
