Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes arrests top spot on UK charts

by Writer RSS on Jun 25th 2012 10:00AM

Lego Batman 2 DC Super Heroes arrest top spot on UK chartsIt was a quiet week on the UK top ten as Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes served justice at the top spot. The Dark Knight and pals' game is the latest chart-topper from Traveller's Tales' Lego series, with this latest title besting the first Lego Batman from 2008, which premiered in second place.

The rest of the top ten is the usual rogues' gallery, with a couple exceptions like Skyrim, which flew up from spot 23 to grab number eight. FIFA Street also re-entered the top ten, climbing from 13 to storm the last spot.

Civilization 5: Gods and Kings held court at No. 16 for its debut. We present the UK top ten after the break.

Throw some of your money at Best Buy's big summer sale

by Writer RSS on Jul 23rd 2012 6:00PM

Big Best Buy saleIt's pretty clear Best Buy knows exactly what it's doing with this giant game sale: It's the Monday following the final hours of the Steam Summer Sale, and many gamers are already suffering from the first stages of withdrawal. They crave cheap games, marked down to ridiculous prices with the flimsy excuse of "it's hot outside."

The Best Buy Summer Gaming Blowout offers more than 100 games and accessories on sale this week, including console versions of Assassin's Creed Revelations, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Just Dance 3 for $10 each, Gears of War 3 for $15, Metroid: Other M for $5, and many more massive discounts.

Best Buy doesn't offer a ton of PC games, but does have Sid Meier's Civilization V: Game of the Year Edition for $20, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for $10, and a few new Sims titles on the cheap. For those itchin' for a post-Steam-sale fix, this might just be your Best Bet.

[Thanks, Turtle Bird.]

Epic Mickey 2 also coming to PC and Mac on Nov. 18

by Writer RSS on Jul 13th 2012 6:25PM

The plan is for Disney's Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two to launch on Xbox 360, PS3 with Move, Wii, PC and Mac on November 18, Junction Point founder Warren Spector said today at San Diego Comic-Con. The launch date was previously confirmed for consoles alone, including the 3DS tie-in title, Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Illusion, which is also slated to drop on November 18.

The Power of Illusion will pay homage to forgotten and rejected gaming features, drawing inspiration from 16-bit graphics and the 1990 Sega game, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse.

Spector said it was "totally dumb" that he had none of the characters speak in the first Epic Mickey, and he's rectifying that by having characters not only talk, but sing in Epic Mickey 2. Actor Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride, Robin Hood: Men in Tights) voices Gus, while Frank Welker (Nibbler in Futurama, at least one character in every cartoon you ever loved) plays Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

Epic Mickey 2 is mature on a level comparable to one of Spector's earlier titles, Deus Ex, backed up by the fact that 54 percent of Epic Mickey players were 18 or older, he said.

A second iteration of the Epic Mickey digital graphic novel series, penned by comic veteran Peter David (The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man 2099), is due out this fall.

June NPD: Lego Batman 2 on top, hardware and software sales still down year over year

by Writer RSS on Jul 12th 2012 6:31PM

This year's overall downward trend in software and hardware sales continued through June, according to the latest set of data released by the NPD Group. The whole industry (hardware, physical software and accessories sales) brought in $699.8 million, 29 percent less dough than the $989.5 million earned in June of 2011.

Year over year, hardware sales were down a staggering 45 percent -- $201.3 million in 2012 versus $364.9 million in 2011. That being said, all platforms (except the PS2 and PSP) saw increased sales over May due to Father's Day and high-school/college graduation gift shopping, although the "Dads and Grads" effect was less potent than it was in 2011, according to the NPD Group's Anita Frazier.

Conversely, accessories were up year over year, if just barely, due mostly to sales of points cards (XBLA points, Steam Wallet cards, etc), which is indicative of a trend towards digital gaming spurred on by a lack of new titles at retail, says Frazier. The segment pulled down four percent more in 2012 ($169.8 million) than in 2011 ($163.00 million). Physical software sales, totaling up at $328.7 million for the month, contributed 29 percent fewer funds to June's totals than they did last year, when software equaled $461.6 million.

As far as specific software is concerned, a list of the 10 best-selling games in June is tucked away after the break, as per usual. List topper Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes sold 450,000 units across all consoles in June, which the NPD Group attributes to an increased amount of Batman mind-share in the public consciousness due to the impending release of The Dark Knight Rises. Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and Diablo 3 came in second and third for the month, with the rest of the list being a mish-mash of the surprising (Pokemon Conquest? Batman: Arkham City?!) and predictable mainstay entries like Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3.

Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (360, Wii, PS3, NDS, 3DS, PSV, PC)Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (360, PS3, PC)Diablo 3 (PC)Max Payne 3 (360, PS3, PC)NBA 2K12 (360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PS2, PC)Batman: Arkham City (360, PS3, PC)Pokemon Conquest (NDS)Modern Warfare 3 (360, PS3, Wii, PC)Battlefield 3 (360, PS3, PC)The Amazing Spider-Man (360, PS3, 3DS, NDS, Wii)

Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes secures UK top spot for second week

by Writer RSS on Jul 2nd 2012 8:30AM

Lego Batman 2 DC Super Heroes arrest top spot on UK chartsLego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes "comfortably" kept The Amazing Spider-Man away from the highest spot on Chart-Track's UK sales chart. There were three new entries in the top five last week: the web-slinger swung into second, and Spec Ops: The Line and London 2012: The Official Video Game (about... London??) landed in third and fourth place, respectively.

The launch of Skyrim's Dawnguard DLC helped propel sales of the game up 121 percent. The launch of Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on PS Vita had a similar impact, shooting the game into tenth place on the charts and sales of the game up 532 percent - making it the top selling Vita game last week "by a large margin."

Steve Wozniak secretly submitted Tetris scores to Nintendo Power

by Writer RSS on Jul 20th 2012 5:30PM

Wozniak secretly submitted Tetris scores to Nintendo PowerAside from his tech eminence having helped found Apple, Steve Wozniak is apparently also a pretty sick Tetris player. He only plays the original Game Boy port, and admits he submitted his scores to Nintendo Power back in the day.

"I was always #1 in the Nintendo Power listings in 1988, and after they said my name had been in there too many times and wouldn't print it again, I spelled my name backwards (Evets Kainzow) and sent in a photo of my score," Wozniak said in a comment on a Gizmodo piece about him. "When I got the magazine, I'd forgotten doing this and was worried that a foreigner from the next city over (I used Saratoga instead of Los Gatos so they wouldn't catch on) had a score up in my range. I got worried but then remembered my joke. Whew! It's in some old issue of Nintendo Power magazine."

Reddit user polar0ids was quick to call Woz's bluff, but it (unsurprisingly) turns out to be a true story. As seen here in this thread, the story checks out. There's Evets Kainzow's score: 546,145 points.

Ubisoft dropping 'Hip Hop Dance Experience' like it's hot

by Writer RSS on Jul 12th 2012 10:00PM

Ubisoft dropping 'Hip Hop Dance Experience' like it's hot
The latest celebrity to be featured in a Ubisoft dance "Experience" game is ... nobody in particular. The Hip Hop Dance Experience, rather than focusing on the work of a single artist, is a dancing game built around a collection of hip hop tracks, representing everything from the "Rapper's Delight" to Flo Rida.

The Hip Hop Dance Experience will be out on Kinect and Wii in November. It'll debut at this weekend's Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival, which is attended by plenty of people who have experienced hip hop dance already.

Like last year's Black Eyed Peas Experience, Ubisoft has placed development in the hands of Elite Beat Agents creator iNiS. Unlike last year, however, we know iNiS is also working on an original music game, so this isn't as much of a crisis for iNiS fans.

SAN FRANCISCO - July 12, 2012 - Today, Ubisoft® announced the development of The Hip Hop Dance Experience, the latest installment in the chart-topping Experience dance game franchise. The Hip Hop Dance Experience releases worldwide in November for Kinect™ for Xbox 360® and Wii™ system from Nintendo. Ubisoft's Experience franchise was the second largest dance video game franchise of 2011 and has sold more than five million copies worldwide* by making an artist's musical universe accessible to fans through interactive and immersive games. The Hip Hop Dance Experience takes this concept even further by featuring an extensive selection of hip-hop music that defines the genre, as well as dance routines arranged by famed choreographers, including Laurieann Gibson and Dave Scott.

Developed by renowned music game developer, iNiS, The Hip Hop Dance Experience features the most comprehensive hip-hop track list ever in a dance video game, ranging from chart-topping Billboard hits to old-school party jams.

The odds on western releases for Bravely Default, Monster Hunter 4 and more

by Writer RSS on Jul 18th 2012 8:30PM

This is a column by Kat Bailey dedicated to the analysis of the once beloved Japanese RPG sub-genre. Tune in every Wednesday for thoughts on white-haired villains, giant robots, Infinity+1 swords, and everything else the wonderful world of JRPGs has to offer.
It's always around July or so that I'm most nervous about an RPG's potential for release in the U.S. With the overwhelming majority of Japanese-developed RPGs getting spring releases, official announcements usually don't happen until late in the fall. Until then, I'm left to stew, fingers crossed that everything will work out.

Some franchises I don't worry about. Short of some kind of catastrophic technical problem, Shin Megami Tensei is pretty much a shoe-in for release. Same goes for Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy (Type-0 being an unfortunate exception). Even Ys seems like a good bet these days thanks to the ongoing support of XSEED.

If it's new, obscure, or otherwise untested in the market though, I find myself getting nervous. Even certain major franchises aren't a sure bet anymore, especially when they are PSP releases. So I watch, wait and hope for good news. Here are four RPGs I've been watching closely over the past year, and what I think the odds are they will see a release stateside.

Pandora's Tower (Wii): The concept behind Pandora's Tower is intriguing. A young girl is slowly turning into a slug monster (or something), and the only way to reverse the process is to eat beast flesh. It's a race against time though, and the required meat is in the deviously designed Pandora's Tower. Relatively light on RPG elements, Pandora's Tower's biggest strength is its puzzles, as well as the sense of desperation that comes with racing the clock.

Sadly, intriguing as Pandora's Tower sounds, it's looking more and more likely that it won't be released in the U.S. It lacks the production values and the pedigree of fellow Operation Rainfall RPGs Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story, and its grisly subject matter makes it a poor choice for the Wii. XSEED may yet throw it a life preserver – and hey, XSEED is a sucker for hard-luck cases – but the odds in favor of that happening are pretty low. The good news is that Pandora's Tower has already been localized, so if you're really intent on trying it out for yourself, you can do so without brushing up on your Japanese (or waiting for a fan translation).

Odds: Time to mod your Wii

Super Robot Taisen Original Generations 2 (PlayStation 3): I've learned to harden my heart against the possibility of a domestic Super Robot Taisen release. It's an obscure series to begin with in the west, and the licensing issues that come with putting a dozen or so anime franchises in the same game just aren't worth the hassle for a Nintendo DS or PSP game. Original Generations 2 is different though. Featuring a cast composed entirely of Namco Bandai characters, it has no licensing issues to speak of. It's also on the PS3, and as usual, it's beautiful.

This wouldn't be the first time that an Original Generations game sees an American release either. Back in 2006, Atlus localized two of the games for the Game Boy Advance, with some success. The series hasn't been back since – unless you count the flashy but ultimately mediocre spinoff Endless Frontier – but the door for a PS3 OG release is certainly open. Even if Atlus isn't interested – they currently have no plans for a western release – I've heard rumblings that Record of Agarest War publisher Aksys Games is more than willing to pick up the slack.

We're still several months out from the Japanese release of Original Generations 2, so it'll be a while before we hear anything. The prospects of a western release are looking pretty strong though – strong enough that I won't be importing a copy at launch. Like I said, fingers crossed, right?

Odds: It's okay to get your hopes up

Bravely Default Flying Fairy (Nintendo 3DS): Bravely Default has three primary things going for it: It's a Square Enix game, and Square is pretty good about international releases (usually); it's for the Nintendo 3DS, which has had quite a bit of momentum lately; and it's a very nice-looking game, enjoying good word of mouth among RPG fans.

As recently as six months ago, I was much more worried about Bravely Default's prospects. The cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3 was the nadir of a difficult launch for the 3DS, which left developers feeling understandably nervous about the system's long-term health. Given those early troubles, I feel there was every reason to be concerned about a U.S. release with a name like "Bravely Default."

Fast-forward to July, and the Nintendo 3DS is looking much healthier, as are Bravely Default's prospects for a U.S. release. That's good news for not just RPG fans, but all Nintendo 3DS owners. Bravely Default is not only beautiful – it borrows heavily from Final Fanatsy V. This is a game that I need to own.

Odds: Looking pretty good

Monster Hunter 4 (Nintendo 3DS): You may have heard of Monster Hunter. I even wrote about it last week. At this point, it's Capcom's most important franchise. Yet, I think there's reason to be at least a little doubtful about a domestic release for Monster Hunter 4. Though, like Bravely Default, its prospects have improved considerably of late.

It's been a while though. Monster Hunter's last appearance in the U.S. was the 2010 Wii release (unless you count the iOS release). Since then, the series has been missing in action, with even the high-definition update of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd for PlayStation failing to appear to this point (though that may be more Sony's doing than anything else).

I wouldn't fret too much though. Sure, it's been two years since its last release, but Monster Hunter has managed to retain a dedicated, if somewhat niche, following in the U.S. The fact that Monster Hunter 4 is a true sequel, combined with its appearance on a new platform that's experiencing healthy growth, ought to push it over the top.

Odds: Still probably going to happen ... I think

Even if none of the four titles listed above end up making it out, it's been a good year for RPG fans. Tales of Graces, Xenoblade Chronicles and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy are on store shelves, with Persona 4: The Golden and The Last Story still to come. Ni No Kuni, Fire Emblem, and Tales of Xillia, meanwhile, are all confirmed for 2013 – a pretty good crop by any measure. As usual, as much as I worry about the future, there's plenty of reason to be grateful for the present.

NintendoWare Weekly: Bomb Monkey, Marvel Pinball, VVVVVV sale

by Writer RSS on Jun 28th 2012 3:00PM

NintendoWare Weekly Bomb Monkey, Marvel Pinball, VVVVVV saleThis is not just a great week for the 3DS eShop, but it's an important one. Last weekend, Nintendo discounted Super Mario Land temporarily; this weekend's sale on VVVVVV proves that these limited-time discounts are an actual thing. For a digital Nintendo platform, two sales is a giant leap forward.

That discount is joined by a demo for Rhythm Thief, which appears to actually be coming out, and interesting new eShop games Bomb Monkey and Marvel Pinball 3D.

It's not so great for the Wii this week, with absolutely no releases of any kind on the Wii Shop, but it can't all be good news.

3DS eShop Marvel Pinball 3D (Zen Studios, 1-4 players, $7.99): Four superhero-themed pinball tables.Bomb Monkey (Renegade Kid, 1-2 players, $4.99): Set off bombs to cause chain-reaction explosions of same-color blocks in this falling block puzzler.Demo: Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Treasure (Sega, 1-2 players, free): A dashing thief solves mysteries in Paris, in a series of musical minigames."Game of the Weekend" sale: VVVVVV for $4.99, Valid from 12PM EST Friday through 12AM EST MondayDSiWare Flip the Core (Engine Software, 1 player, $1.99/200 DSi Points): A side scrolling shooter in which you can freely rotate the screen on a horizontal axis.Escape the Virus: Swarm Survival (Teyon, 1 player, $1.99/200 DSi Points): It appears to be a DSiWare version of Peakvox Viral Survival, under a different title, from a different publisher.
