New Nintendo eShop releases: Sega 3D Classics, Mario games sale, SMT4 for $30

by Sinan Kubba Writer RSS on Nov 29th 2013 9:00AM

An assortment of Mario games at 30 percent off isn't a bad way to do Black Friday, but the eShop really gets into the mood with Shin Megami Tensei 4. The 3DS JRPG is just $30 until December 2, an top price for what we called "a great entry point" to the Atlus series.

If we had you at "Mario games at 30 percent off," let's fill you in on the details. Both the 3DS and Wii U versions of Super Mario Bros. 1 and 2 feature, while Super Mario Land 2 and Mario & Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move are also discounted on the 3DS eShop, and Super Mario World and the original Mario Bros. get price dips on the Wii U eShop. We'd say there's no better time to revisit SMB2 then after playing Super Mario 3D World - gotta love that floaty Peach.

If you're done with discounts and just want the new stuff. we've got that, too - including the first batch of the long-time-coming Sega 3D Classics, and episodes 1-10 of Pokemon: BW Rival Destinies. Head past the break for the full rundown of newly-released games.

Disney Infinity doubles quarterly earnings for Disney Interactive

by Danny Cowan Writer RSS on Nov 8th 2013 12:00PM

The release of Disney Infinity drove a 107-percent increase in fourth-quarter revenue for Disney's Interactive division, the company revealed in its quarterly financial report.

Disney notes that its Interactive division took in $396 million in revenue during the quarter ending September 28, 2013. Disney Interactive's revenue totaled $191 million during the fourth quarter of last year.

"Improved operating results for the quarter and year were due to increases at our console games and Japan mobile businesses," the report states. "The increase at our console games business was primarily due to the fourth quarter release of Disney Infinity."

The bounceback follows up on Disney Interactive's $54 million operating income loss in the second quarter of 2013. Disney Infinity represented a significant risk for the division, as parent company Disney passed on the opportunity to produce games based on the Iron Man and Star Wars franchises in order to focus on Infinity's development.

During a conference call this week, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that more than one million Disney Infinity Starter Packs were sold across all available platforms since the game's release in August.

NPD: Video game spending up 17% in Q3 (thanks, GTA 5!)

RESEARCH SHOWS $3.45 BILLION SPENT ON VIDEO GAME CONTENT IN THE U.S. DURING THE THIRD QUARTER OF 2013, A 17 PERCENT INCREASE OVER SAME TIME PERIOD LAST YEAR

New Physical Games, Digital Full Games and Downloadable Content on Consoles and PCs had the highest growth rates, driving the largest Industry growth since Q2 2011

PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK, November 21, 2013 – According to the Q3 2013 Games Market Dynamics: U.S.* report from global information company, The NPD Group, in addition to the $1.30 billion spent in the U.S. by consumers on new physical video and PC game software during the third quarter (July - September) of 2013 (Q3'13), the total consumer spend on other physical forms of content (used and rental) reached $436 million, and content in digital format (full game and add-on content downloads, subscriptions, mobile games and social network games) generated $1.72 billion.

The third quarter of 2013 experienced double-digit growth in content spending, stemming from a 20 percent increase in spending for new physical games coupled with a 35 percent growth in digital full games and downloadable content (DLC). These two acquisition types combined to create a total of close to $1.98 billion in consumer content spending versus $1.59 billion generated in Q3'12. Total content spending experienced an increase of 17 percent.

While new physical games, digital full games, and DLC were major drivers of the volume of this quarter's increase, all other areas of content spending also increased with the exception of social network gaming which continued to decline.

"Trends during the third quarter were the best that we have observed since the second quarter of 2011, driven by growth across both the physical and digital sides of the video game industry," said Liam Callahan, industry analyst. "The launch of Grand Theft Auto V helped propel the new physical sales by twenty percent and continued growth of console digital full games as well as downloadable add-on content is an indication of the renewed health of the industry. We expect that the launches of Microsoft's Xbox One and the Sony PS4 will continue to fuel consumer excitement and spending for games heading into the holiday season."

Methodology

The estimates are published in NPD's report, Games Market Dynamics: U.S. (formerly known as the Games Industry: Total Consumer Spend) – released by The NPD Group in November 2013 - and are derived leveraging NPD's portfolio of physical POS tracking (Retail Tracking Service) and consumer research including the Games Acquisition Monitor, Video Game and PC Game Subscriptions Report and Consumer Tracking Service. It also incorporates consumer spend estimation provided by NPD retail and publisher partners, and calibration with third-party sources.

*The NPD Group has enhanced its Games Market Dynamics information in conjunction with retail and publishing partners, and third-party sources to allow for improved visibility into alternative channels. Due to these periodic updates, care should be taken when comparing any data in this press release to prior Games Market Dynamics press releases.

Wii Mini arriving in US with packed-in Mario Kart Wii

WII MINI OFFERS BIG VALUE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Affordable System Packaged with Mario Kart Wii and Available in the U.S for Only $99.99

REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 4, 2013 – The Wii console was a cultural phenomenon when it was released to the world in 2006. To continue this legacy and share the fun with as many people as possible, Nintendo is launching the Wii mini console in the U.S. at a suggested retail price of only $99.99. That is a tremendous value for families and people who have yet to join one of the most iconic and talked-about pop-culture trends of the last decade. Wii mini is a smaller, redesigned version of Wii that plays the entire library of more than 1,300 Wii games. The compact system is matte black with a red border, and comes with the Mario Kart Wii game, a red Wii Remote Plus controller and a red Nunchuk controller. While availability will differ somewhat according to location, shoppers can expect to see Wii mini in stores by the middle of November.

"Wii mini offers the same fun experience as Wii, which has been enjoyed by millions of people around the world," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "And it comes packaged with Mario Kart Wii, a multiplayer Mario racing game that is one of the best-selling Wii games. At such a great price, it is an extraordinary value for shoppers this holiday season."

Wii is the best-selling system of this generation with more than 100 million units sold globally. Wii mini is for those who don't own a Wii console and want to enjoy a ton of great Wii games on a stylish system at an affordable price. It is also for families who want an additional console in another room, allowing siblings and friends to play while the rest of the family enjoys other entertainment and games on the main living room TV screen. While Wii mini is not compatible with the Internet and will not allow online functionality when playing games, select multiplayer games can still be played locally with friends and families, which is the ideal way to enjoy such entertaining games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii.

As a companion to the Wii mini system, a large collection of Nintendo Selects Wii games is available at a suggested retail price of only $19.99 each. These games include modern classics like Super Mario Galaxy, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Super Paper Mario. In addition, three newly discounted Wii games – Super Mario Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wii Sports Resort – are also available at a suggested retail price of $29.99 each. With an existing, extensive library of classic games available at such low prices, Wii mini demonstrates the value and variety Nintendo is offering this holiday season.

For more information about Wii mini, visit http://www.nintendo.com/wiimini.

Remember that Wii features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://www.nintendo.com/wii.
