by Writer RSS on Sep 4th 2012 9:00AM

Square Enix unveils TGS lineup, Dragon Quest X WiiU includedSquare Enix unveiled its Tokyo Game Show lineup this week, revealing the Wii U version of Dragon Quest X is being showcased for the first time. Square, who released the Wii version of the MMORPG last month in Japan, says fans can expect new information about the game at the exhibition. Presumably that includes what the Wii U version has that the other doesn't, and how that affects the game's cross-platform play.

Other highlights from the announced lineup include Hitman Absolution, the Realm Reborn re-launch of Final Fantasy XIV, and Black Ops 2, which Square Enix is publishing in Japan. The Tokyo Game Show runs through September 20-23.

Square Enix's Mike Fischer on trends and the changing game industry

by on Jul 25th 2011 9:00PM

In an interview with Gamasutra, Mike Fischer, recently appointed president of Square Enix's US operations, spoke at great length about the current state of the game industry. Fischer noted that Square Enix is necessarily focused on building games for "gamers," primarily because he believes that the definition of gamer is "very subjective."

As an example, Fischer pointed to television networks canceling soap operas because their primary audience are spending time playing games. "If they're playing more games an hour than a college student, who is the gamer?" he asked.

That said, even though social games are "hot" right now Square Enix won't abandon traditional game development for the sake of a trend that Fischer believes may not last. The company has, according to Fischer, a "strong lineup and strong IP" that gives him "confidence in a long term success" and an opportunity to take part in current trends outside of core games.

Check out Gamasutra for the full interview, which covers Square Enix's strategy going forward and Fischer's thoughts on new IP, the console development cycle and more.

Square Enix's Wii U tests don't necessarily involve Dragon Quest X

by on Jun 23rd 2011 1:15PM

Yesterday's report that Square Enix is considering a version of Dragon Quest X for Wii U has been clarified by the site that first brought us CEO Yoichi Wada's comments, made to a group of investors. Apparently the company is working with the Wii U tech, but that's a completely separate endeavor from Dragon Quest X for now.

So, while it's possible that you may still see Dragon Quest X on Wii U, Square isn't saying one way or the other. Frankly, we'd be happier to see something made from the ground up for the unique console.

And are we angry that we were lead astray? No, friends, we're not. Sometimes, things just get lost in translation. In fact, that's the subject of our favorite Bill Murray movie, which is Garfield.
