Mario Sports Mix – Review Round-Up

The BitBlock – 80
YouTube Preview Image

Nintendo Life – 80
While Mario Sports Mix may lack the depth of Mario Tennis and Golf, it’s a great example of a more casual Mario title that multiple players can enjoy. Not all the disciplines on offer will be to everyone’s taste, but there’s enough good stuff here to last you a fair while and Square Enix have given it oodles of imagination.

Vandal Online – 73
Overall this is a good game for playing with friends, with lots of comic situations and a potential for high competitiveness between the players. However, its gameplay can become too simple and repetitive for some players.

Official Nintendo Magazine – 72
The unlockables are also a bit underwhelming. There are six hidden characters from Square Enix games, but while some are pleasant additions (we’d never turn down another appearance from a Slime), others are a bit pointless. Replacing them with other Mario characters would be much better.

The four mini-games included – one for each of the sports featured in the game – are a nice addition. The volleyball game, for example, throws some rhythm action into the mix and has players trying to hit colored volleyballs at the right time in order to create the percussion for one of three Mario or Final Fantasy themes. Like the rest of the game, this is more enjoyable with four people.

If you’re a fan of Mario sports games and are in the mood for some local or online multiplayer, then Mario Sports Mix should keep you busy for a while, as long as you can stand taking a few hours to play some incredibly easy tournaments to unlock all the characters and arenas on offer.

Gameblog.fr – 40

Mario Sports Mix has a nice Wiimote gameplay, and both Volleyball and Dodgeball mini-games will grant you a nice and funny afternoon. But beyond that… with but four sports and repetitive game mechanics, the title seems to be a little stingy compared to Wii Sports Resort or the Mario & Sonic series. On the Wii, Mario Sports Mix comes only as the third wheel.

[PS3, X360, PC] Rumour: Battlefield 3 DLC Info Leaked?

[PS3, X360, PC] Rumour: Battlefield 3 DLC Info Leaked? [Image: game-news-image-2011-1ff9913b2aa9f86e80c...2e4c60.png]
It looks as though the special DLC for Battlefield 3 may have leaked out a bit earlier than EA or DICE would have liked. We are still awaiting final confirmation, but it looks like a poster uncovered by a member on the Battlefield forums may have stolen the thunder.

If said poster is to be believed, then the special DLC that will be coming with the limited edition of Battlefield 3 will be a four-map redo of the "Strike at Karkand" map from Battlefield 2. Those who do not pick up the limited edition will be able to purchase the DLC roughly a month after launch. This particular map was one of the most popular ones from Battlefield 2 and there have been several people asking for it on the official forums.

Whether or not this ends up being true will be a matter of time, EA have been contacted and when an answer is known either way then you'll see it here.

You can check out a close-up of the alleged poster here.

[PS3, X360] New Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Trailer, Meet Galactus So, who awaits you in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 you ask? None other than the mighty Galactus, of course. It looks like you'll spend part of the battle fighting against 'clones' of the playable cast before facing off against Galactus himself. He certainly looks intimidating.
Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is launching on February 15th across America and then three days later on the 18th of February in Europe. Will you be picking it up?

I'm curious as to how you trace it back to gaming, because it seems like you're trolling

If that's really the case though, you should talk to someone before it gets out of hand.

How to Backup & Burn Wii Games

Backing up Wii games and then burning them is actually pretty simple if you have the right tools and knowledge. In a nutshell, the process is basically as follows: you first need to download the game data as an ISO, and then burn that ISO onto a new disc. This is done by using a tool called imgBurn, which is available from the Internet (just Google "imgburn" to download it). ImgBurn is a utility which allows you to copy discs, "rip" data from discs and burn ISO's to discs. It's a complete solution to backing up your games and is the main component of this tutorial. To get started, you first need to put the Wii game disc into your DVD drive. There are rumors that you need to have a specific drive to read Wii games, but the only way to find out if yours does it to put the game in and see if imgBurn will rip it. After you've put the game into your PC, you then need to download & install imgBurn. This will allow you to download the game data from the game and put it onto your PC as an ISO file. Once you've installed imgBurn, simply load it up and then find the "rip CD" option. Click it and then let it proceed in downloading the ISO file to your PC. If all goes to plan, you should be able to see that a 4GB file is now on your PC. This is where the Wii game has been downloaded to your hard drive and is ready to be burnt. To then burn this to a backup disc, you then need to load up imgBurn again, and this time click on the "burn from ISO" option. This will allow you to put the game data from your PC onto a blank disc, and in selecting this option, you will actually be able to put the game data onto a blank DVD. You just need to select the ISO file from the game and then get imgBurn to burn it to disc. An important note here is that you should burn your new disc using 4X write speed, as this has the highest success rate. Although this tutorial should work, there are some other parts to the puzzle which will help increase your chances of being able to backup & burn Wii games. You need to be able do several important things to your PC and your console in order to get it working 100% of the time, and that's where some more advanced tutorials are needed. You can actually burn Wii games very easily with a tool called "GameBackupSystem". This tool has been created by an anonymous team, but we were able to backup and play 20+ Wii games with it. It copies your game discs perfectly, including the game data. This means that you can copy as many games as you want with the system, and then play them on your console easily. Gaming leads to rape...

Gaming leads to rape... Didn't feel this was newsworthy, but it is video game related. Another insightful article from the good people at Fox News, titled "Is Bulletstorm the Worst Video Game in the World?". If you can't make it through a Fox News article without vomiting all over your keyboard, here are a few intellectual gems extracted from the article:
Quote:“If a younger kid experiences Bulletstorm's explicit language and violence, the damage could be significant,” Dr. Jerry Weichman, a clinical psychologist at the Hoag Neurosciences Institute in Southern California, told FoxNews.com. “Violent video games like Bulletstorm have the potential to send the message that violence and insults with sexual innuendos are the way to handle disputes and problems,” Weichman said.

Quote:Carol Lieberman, a psychologist and book author, told FoxNews.com that sexual situations and acts in video games -- highlighted so well in Bulletstorm -- have led to real-world sexual violence.
“The increase in rapes can be attributed in large part to the playing out of [sexual] scenes in video games,” she said.

Quote:“Games without sufficient quality of gameplay -- games that include highly objectionable violent or sexual content -- often pump up the level of this kind of content to gain media attention. This tactic typically fails, as can be seen in the poor sales performance of titles such as BMX XXX and Postal,” said Billy Pidgeon, a video game analyst with M2 Research.

Quote:“The marketing is clearly aimed at children and young adolescents,” Killen said.

Hard to believe that (allegedly) educated people could be this ignorant, or just plain stupid. I know it's just Fox News being Fox News (remember they published a story a few years ago calling Mass Effect borderline pornography), but it is amazing that such an article could exist today. Using The Nintendo Wii Is Not Only Fun But An Amazing Way To ...

Never before has losing weight been so easy. Technology has advanced so much that it is possible to use it to actually reap benefits that are felt, and much appreciated. Wii fit was created by gamers to become an all inclusive video game that reaches out gracefully to individuals trying to lose a bit of weight. So do yourself a favor and buy Wii fit, you surely will not regret it. Using the Nintendo Wii is not only fun but an amazing way to lose weight.

This series of games gets couch potatoes getting up from their couches and doing what they love the most, having fun whilst doing nothing at all. A tremendous boost of energy heightens any adrenalin rush, and that is exactly what you get. The exercises themselves are moderately intensive, but will leave room for energy expenditure, something that gets fats burning out and corroding away.

The American Heart Foundation recently carried out a study on the Wii series of fitness games, and boy was it conclusive and heart warming. Like I said before, energy expenditure is a given and you must be prepared to use it. In the process of having fun with playing the games you also burn out fats that may have been building up in your body over time.

Because you are playing a game it does not actually appear as if you are taking a serious jog in order to lose weight. The games are pretty much simple and easy to play, allowing for a broader market to be exploited. But still on the health benefits. It is very much possible to avoid cardiovascular diseases when you play them more often than not, something again revealed by the American Heart Foundation.

When it comes to the single arm stand exercise keeping fit becomes more and more intense. When doing this exercise you are actually doing vigorous exercise, whilst having fun at the same time. Energy expenditure however goes down when you play other games, like boxing. Boxing is actually competitively efficient when compared to games that do not require a large amount of input from you.

There are a lot more games to play apart from boxing. Tennis and baseball are other sports that can amuse you if you are a sports fanatic. The really exciting thing about such games is that they draw you into the reality of playing sport, something that is a pleasure to enjoy, whilst exercising. But such games do not help you lose weight as fast as boxing.

In addition to the fun of boxing and baseball, resort games are another exhilarating addition to the compact series of Wii games. But there still needs to be further development as far as game makers are concerned. Increasing the spectrum of games gives people more options to work with, instead of being forced to stick to the usual games that others might find dull.

Obesity is a major concern these days. And the main reason for this is that obese people are too lazy to work out. But with these games losing weight has become more fun than it actually was a decade ago.

After years of no new video game hardware, 2011 is turning into a big year with the 3DS and Sony's NGP. And eyes are beginning to look to the Wii, which vitally needs an upgrade. But will it be too little too late?

Michael Pachter, one of the most influential voices in the industry, says Nintendo needed to refresh the Wii at least two years ago. If it introduces an incremental upgrade now, it will be too late.

When the Wii came out, the gaming industry was very different. No one was buying console games digitally. No one ever thought they'd need more than 100 GB in their console's hard drive, and the idea of being able to update any problem in the console or game was completely unheard of.

Pachter says Nintendo needs to appreciate that. It can no longer put out a product that doesn't live up to today's standards. The Wii has been grandfathered in to the technology that now encircles the PS3 and Xbox 360 - like online networking and digital proliferation - but a new console has no chance of survival.

"Nintendo can't let Microsoft have a 20 million install base of next-gen consoles and they're still in the last generation. I said in '08 [the Wii HD] was coming, because I really thought the time was right [...] 2010, I think, was the absolute last Christmas they could afford to wait. They had to do it and they didn't. Now, I think it's too late," said Pachter on GTTV's Bonus Round.

"I think they boxed themselves in. No matter what they do, it won't be as successful as the Wii," said Pachter.

Monster Hunter Tops Japanese Charts For First Full Week Of 2011 - Gamasutra

Monster Hunter Tops Japanese Charts For First Full Week Of 2011 Capcom's Monster Hunter Freedom 3 led the Japanese sales charts for the first full week of 2011, reports tracking firm Media Create.

For the week ended January 9, the consistently-popular PSP title sold 133,952 units, more than double Nintendo's Donkey Kong Country Returns for Wii, which took second place with 66,551 units sold.

Wii Party maintained its spot at number three, while Pokemon Black/White on DS rose to number four after slipping down the charts last week.

Rounding out the Nintendo titles in the top 10, Mario Sports Mix landed at number five, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii filled out the charts at number 10.

The only new title on the charts this week was Square Enix's SaGa 3: Jikuu no Hasha - Shadow or Light for Nintendo DS, which debuted at number eight.

This Nintendo DS RPG is a visually enhanced remake of Square Enix's Final Fantasy Legend III, a Nintendo Game Boy title released in North America in 1993.

Titles falling from the top 10 this week include Level 5's Inazuma Eleven 3: World Challenge!! The Ogre, and Namco Bandai's AKB1/48: If I loved an Idol.

Nintendo: First-party titles still reign supreme

(Credit: NPD Group (via Nintendo))

Nintendo's own games continue to dominate Wii software sales, much to the chagrin of third-party developers.

Speaking during his company's earnings call on Friday, Nintendo chief Satoru Iwata unveiled the top 20 best-selling games of 2010 in the U.S. market, compiled by research firm NPD. Out of that listing, 11 of the games were available on either the Wii or the Nintendo DS. Nine out of that list were published by Nintendo. The remaining two games--Just Dance and Just Dance 2--were published by Ubisoft. No other third-party developer was able to break into the top 20 with a Wii or DS game.

For his part, Iwata seemed quite pleased with those results. "Unlike in Japan, Nintendo software titles were not the only titles for Nintendo platforms that were hits in the U.S. last year," he said.

In Japan, according to research firm MediaCreate, Nintendo's two hardware platforms secured 12 spots in the top 20 best-selling games. As Iwata pointed out, all the Wii games included in that list--seven in total--were published by Nintendo. Three of the five DS games that made it onto the list were published by Nintendo or Nintendo-owned companies, while the remaining two games were published by third-party Square Enix.

Nintendo games dominated Germany's top-selling software list too; only one title was published by a third-party. Just two third-party publishers saw strong sales on Nintendo's platforms in both France and the U.K.

(Credit: Gamespot)

Those results stand in stark contrast to other platforms. In the U.S., only one of the top-selling Xbox 360 games--Halo: Reach--was published by Microsoft. God of War III was the only Sony-published game on the list. All the others were published by third parties.

Of course, Nintendo's troubles with third-party development are nothing new. For years, the company has been the target of concerns from publishers that their titles don't perform as well on Nintendo hardware as on other devices.

That sentiment was echoed by Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello in 2009. He told investors at the time that the "Wii platform has been a little weaker" than his company has initially estimated. He pointed out that "very, very few multiplatform titles are succeeding on the Wii so far, and collectively, Electronic Arts and Nintendo need to tackle that."

Over a year later, it was clear that Riccitiello had little success in achieving that goal.

Speaking to IndustryGamers last month, Riccitiello said that Nintendo must "promote third-party content better, as opposed to first-party content." He also said that he's becoming more frustrated by Nintendo.

"I can come up with a dozen titles in the last decade, but it's really tough to come up with a dozen great titles that have been platform-defining for them that weren't their own," Riccitiello told IndustryGamers. "I don't care whether it's 'Mario' or 'Twilight Princess' or 'GoldenEye,' it was their own content. I'm going back to [Nintendo 64], and I can go back to SNES if you want, but they've never really been a heavy third-party supporting system.

"It's not lack of trying," Riccitiello went on to say. "They start the morning thinking what's best for their own intellectual property."

Lightning Fish Games CEO Simon Prytherch wasn't so quick to only blame Nintendo. In an interview in 2009, he said that gamers "have been damaged by a lot of substandard software." That has caused consumers to "only trust big Nintendo brands," he continued.

But third-party concerns pale in comparison to the other issues Nintendo faces right now. Last week, the company announced that through the nine months ended on December 31, its profit declined by 74.3 percent, compared to the same period in 2009. It blamed "slower sales and appreciation of the yen."

THQ highlights 1.2m uDraw units in Q3 earnings; wants more uDraw, fewer kids movie-based games

by on Feb 2nd 2011 5:10PM

THQWhile a large slate of AAA titles is expected from THQ's Core Games unit in its Q4 2011 and 2012 fiscal periods, its fiscal Q3 2011 (October–December 2010) financial results are all about the less high-profile Kids, Family and Casual Business which had an unexpected hit with the North American release of uDraw Game Tablet for Wii last November. In less than two months, THQ managed to move over 1.2 million units in North America alone; an international release is expected "in the March quarter" (by the end of March this year).

And it's a good thing, too! THQ also "reevaluated the sales potential of games based on its kids movie-based licenses" for its Q3 statement and, "consistent with recent industry trends," it "lowered expectations for this category." That cost the company an impairment of $30.3 million which was excluded from its Q3 non-GAAP results (which we're getting to, hold on!). Instead of licensed kid's games, the Kids, Family and Casual Business is "increasing its focus on popular new play patterns and devices such as Kinect for Xbox 360, PlayStation Move, the uDraw GameTablet and Nintendo 3DS." Makes sense, right?

Now for the numbers: For the three-month quarter ending December 31, 2010, THQ posted net sales of $314.6 million, an eight percent drop year-over-year, resulting in a net loss of $14.9 million compared to a net income of $542,000 in the same period the previous year. In addition to the aforementioned $30.3 million impairment, THQ also excluded "a charge of $9.9 million related to the cancellation of Company of Heroes Online and WWE Online" from its non-GAAP results. So, with those things in mind, THQ reported non-GAAP net income of $28.5 million for the quarter compared with net income of $26.6 million for the prior-year period.

We're on the THQ earnings call now, and will report back any updates.

NintendoWare Weekly: Zombie Panic demo, Magic Destiny

by on Jan 31st 2011 9:35AM

This week, you have a chance to try out the WiiWare game Zombie Panic in Wonderland, an entertaining forward-scrolling shooter in which Momotaro, Dorothy, and Snow White shoot at zombies and avoid being hugged (fatally). We suppose you've always had the chance to try it, but thanks to the demo you can now do so without spending money.

If you'd like to know when you'll be able to afford more WiiWare games, you can pick up Magic Destiny, which tells your fortune using tarot, seashells, numerology, and, uh, virtual palm reading.

That kind of makes the DSiWare game about adopting 101 dolphins seem tame.

Nintendo Wii Game Console Review – Pros And Cons

The competition in game consoles is at its pinnacle, and some individuals even refer to it as video game battle. Every single game console has its own good and bad points that the other provider uses to achieve a notch ahead of them. The modern gaming entertainment is a beauty competition that keeps game console companies highly flourishing. This post will be talking about the pros and cons of Nintendo Wii. This will make it easier to better have an understanding of why Wii is well-known with casual gamers and not with serious gamers.

Pros:

This is clearly one of the powerhouses in game console business. They have been in this business long before Sony and Microsoft joined the scene. They are more centered on making games that does not provide mind-blowing graphics but with exceptional game play. They’re the designers of some of the finest games for all time such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and Donkey Kong.

They supply cutting edge innovations to the world of gaming, and their newest is the motion sensing controllers. This makes it possible for the gamer to take part in Nintendo Wii physically games without holding a traditional controller. The motion controllers allow the console to track the actions of the players and translate it to in-game actions instantly.

Cons:

Nintendo doesn’t concentrate much in producing games that takes game development to the limit. Although they’re recognized for great innovations, they do not have games that manifest high-end graphics similar to Sony and Microsoft. This is the reason why casual gamers choose Wii, while hardcore gamers choose other gaming systems over Nintendo.

These are some of the main points that you need to keep in mind when deciding on a game console. Constantly bear in mind that different consoles have their individual specialties and weak points, which is why it’s better to perform a study prior to buying a product.

Watch out for my other article as I will be revealing another game console known as Microsoft Xbox 360.

Iwata: Zelda Skyward Sword expected to launch after Ocarina of Time 3D

by on Jan 31st 2011 11:30AM

It seems that the hero of Hyrule will remain bound to Nintendo's forthcoming 3D handheld in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time before turning his sword skyward at some point after, the company's third quarter financial report indicates. "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has been in the process of being remade for Nintendo 3DS, and this Nintendo 3DS version is expected to hit the market earlier [than Skyward Sword]," Nintendo head Satoru Iwata states in the piece.

Though Skyward Sword apparently won't launch until sometime after OoT (which is expected sometime after June's E3, outside of Nintendo's "launch window"), the report also reveals that Miyamoto's team is currently "entering into the final completion stage" of the Wii title. That being the case, we'll expect a much more impressive demonstration of the game at Nintendo's E3 presser later this year.
