New Nintendo eShop Releases: 3D Sonic, 3D Altered Beast, Donkey Kong sale

by Sinan Kubba Writer RSS on Dec 5th 2013 1:00PM

Like the rest of the games industry, the Nintendo eShop is slowing down ahead of the holidays. We're not quite at the snoring-by-the-fireplace stage, but going by this week's offerings it's already donned a suitably seasonal sweater.

Still, the 3DS gets two 3D-enhanced Sega classics in Sonic the Hedgehog and Altered Beast, and there are a few other bits and bobs, too. There's also a week-long 30 percent sale on Donkey Kong games, including Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. on both 3DS and Wii U, Donkey Kong 3 on Wii U, and Game & Watch: Donkey Kong Jr. on 3DS.

As ever, you'll find the full list of new releases snoozing past the break.

La-Mulana 2 ventures onto Kickstarter, $200K funding goal

by Sinan Kubba Writer RSS on Jan 21st 2014 10:00AM

La-Mulana 2 is seeking $200,000 in Kickstarter funding to be made for Windows PC, a turn of events as unexpected as one of the spelunking plaformer's traps. Publisher Playism and developer Nigoro first announced the sequel to the WiiWare and PC game at last year's Tokyo Game Show, and now the two studios have a month to raise $200,000 and greenlight the game. Going by the this morning's rapid funding, they won't need the time.

As for what we know about La-Mulana 2, it stars a new hero in Lumisa Kosugi, the possibly illegitimate daughter of the first game's protagonist. If her legitimacy is in question, the sequel's gameplay doesn't look to be. As we saw at TGS, players will once again scavenge for clues in the 2D caves and tombs of La-Mulana 2, and carefully dissect the riddles they find there to avoid falling victim to the many lurking deathtraps.

For those willing to stump up the cash for La-Mulana 2, a $15 pledge earns you a Steam and DRM-free copy of the game upon release. With funding accumulating quickly, Playism and Nigoro will already be looking to the stretch goals they've outlined: Highlights include Mac and Linux versions at $500K, a 3DS or Vita version at $1.15 million, Wii U, PS4, or Xbox One versions at $1.65 million, and Wii, PS3, or Xbox 360 versions all the way up at $2.35 million. The stretch goal platforms are "subject to negotiation," indicating Playism and Nigoro can't guarantee more than one for each stretch goal.

In the campaign video, Nigoro Director Takumi Namamura said his studio wants to take original game's system and evolve it into something that can push "2D games further than they have ever been before."

"I grew up in an era of Japanese game development that made it the envy of the gaming world," said Namamura. "The quality of games accelerated at a high pace. It felt like every single release was another step forward. It was an exciting time for us, with both games and their technology evolving right before our eyes. I feel this evolution of gaming stopped sometime after 3D games became mainstream. But what if 2D games had never stopped evolving? We are challenging ourselves to make a game that answers that question."

Whether or not it answers that question, Nigoro says Lu-Mulana 2 will probably be a 20-to-30 hour game for newcomers, with more than 18 areas, 9 bosses, and 40 mid-stage bosses to explore and confront. Another key figure is that of 16:9, the enhanced aspect ratio from the 2011 original. As for an ETA, when the game was first announced the aim was this year, but the newly unveiled Kickstarter notes an estimated delivery of December 2015.

Final two Skylanders: Swap Force series 3 figures released

by David Hinkle Writer RSS on Jan 15th 2014 4:00AM

Rubble Rouser and Stink Bomb, the final two Skylanders Swap Force figurines in the third series, have been released and can be found at your local Toys R Us store in the US, Kotaku reports.

You may already have a shoebox full of Swap Force characters, but these two characters are of particular interest, as they allow access to the final content in Skylanders: Swap Force. Rubble Rouser, the first earth elemental Skylanders: Swap Force character, is necessary for bypassing certain gates requiring a rocky touch. If a masked gunman is forcing you to choose between Rubble Rouser and Stink Bomb, it's worth knowing that Rubble Rouser's extra content can be accessed during co-op games – those dual-element gates can also be opened by two separate Skylanders playing together.

Stink Bomb, on the other hand, is the first character able to unlock Swap Force's sneaking mini-games. If players want to fully experience absolutely everything Skylanders: Swap Force has to offer, Stink Bomb is a must-have character.

Skylanders: Swap Force is the latest entry in Activision's toy-driven action platformer series, which converts real-life toys into in-game characters by use of a special portal. Swap Force is the first entry to have figurines with a top piece and bottom piece that can be combined with other Swap Force characters to create new combinations.

Angry Birds series pecks up 2 billion downloads

by Jessica Conditt Writer RSS on Jan 22nd 2014 2:30PM

Angry BirdsRovio has let loose 2 billion copies of Angry Birds games since the series' launch in 2009 – that equals 28 percent of the world's population, for comparison's sake. Rovio CMO Peter Vesterbacka announced the number during London's Pocket Gamer Connects:

"If you look at Rovio and what we've done over four years, there are now 2 billion copies of Angry Birds out there. I thought I was super-ambitious in 2010 when I said we'll make $100 million and everyone else thought I was crazy, but it's very important people thought I was insane for saying $100 million back then."

Two hundred million people play Angry Birds each month, "the size of the Twitter audience," Vesterbacka said. Rovio reported 1.7 billion downloads in April 2013, and revenue of $195.6 million for the year. Vesterbacka noted that Rovio created 51 games before making Angry Birds, and now nine out of 10 people in both the US and China know the brand. An Angry Birds movie is due out in July 2016, produced and funded by Rovio alone.

"We're not building Angry Birds for a hundred days but for a hundred years," he said. "Mario is a great role model for anyone in games, it's been built for almost 30 years now. Hello Kitty is 40 this year and Mickey Mouse was launched in 1928 as a black-and-white cartoon, and that company is now building theme parks based on the character on every continent. We launched an iPhone game in 2009 and now 45 percent of our business comes from physical products, including drinks."

As for the competition: "Candy Crush's half a billion installs is a good start," Vesterbacka said.

New Nintendo eShop releases: Rush, Double Dragon, more Sega 3D Classics

by Sinan Kubba Writer RSS on Dec 12th 2013 12:30PM

Dear Santa,

Seriously, guy, where is my The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on Wii U? It's out on the European eShop this week, but I'm not seeing any Best SNES Games of All Time in the North American releases. Why is that?

Wasn't I a good boy this year, Santa? Don't I deserve the chance to revisit a classic Zelda on my new Nintendo system? Wouldn't I get such joy from playing it alongside its 3DS sequel, A Link Between Worlds? That's all I wanted this year, Santa. That's all I've ever wanted.

Tell me, Santa: Do you want to watch the world burn? Is that who you are? I hate you.

Sincerely,
Tommy

PS: I would also like a Super Soaker 5000.

Disney Infinity moves 3 million starter packs

by Thomas Schulenberg Writer RSS on Jan 18th 2014 12:00PM

Disney Infinity may have been named as a reference to its own potential revenue - The New York Times reports that Disney Interactive has sold three million Disney Infinity Starter Packs, which include figurines of three Disney characters and the game itself. Infinity was also the tenth best-selling game of 2013, according to data from the NPD Group.

Activision's Skylanders Swap Force, Infinity's main competition, was not one of the top 10 best-selling games of 2013, but the Skylanders series' revenue from retail sales surpassed $1.5 billion earlier this year. Consoles have received annual installments of the Skylanders franchise since its introduction with Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure.

Plans to expand Infinity's cast have resulted in new figurines for Disney's Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph and Tangled films, with references to classic moments from past films being recreated in Infinity's Toy Box mode. With Infinity's introduction doubling Disney Interactive's fourth-quarter earnings, Infinity's play set is likely to keep expanding. Future additions might not be determined by developers though - only The Claw knows who will go and who will stay.

Nintendo wins Wii peripheral lawsuit, obtains suing company's patent portfolio

by Danny Cowan Writer RSS on Jan 9th 2014 3:30PM

Nintendo has obtained the entire patent portfolio of exergaming company InterAction Laboratories (a.k.a. IA Labs) following an unsuccessful 2010 lawsuit alleging that Nintendo's Wii and its peripherals infringed on IA's patents.

A trial court ruled in favor of Nintendo in 2012, ordering IA Labs to pay Nintendo's legal defense fees as a result. IA Labs lost a subsequent appeal last year, leading to a sheriff's sale of its assets when the company was unable to reimburse Nintendo's court costs. Nintendo then purchased IA Labs' remaining assets and patent portfolio during the sale, closing off the potential for further claims and lawsuits.

While Nintendo won this particular patent battle, a federal judge recently ruled in favor of Tomita Technologies International in a lawsuit over Nintendo's patent-infringing use of its glasses-free 3D technology. Nintendo was ordered to pay a percentage of revenue earned from 3DS hardware sales to Tomita as a result of the suit.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon dev now Nintendo-only studio

by Danny Cowan Writer RSS on Jan 9th 2014 6:30PM

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Super Mario Strikers developer Next Level Games is now making games for Nintendo exclusively, co-founder Jason Carr revealed during an interview with Gamasutra.

Next Level previously helmed a 2009 Wii remake of Nintendo's classic NES boxing game Punch-Out!!, following up with the multiplatform Captain America: Super Soldier in 2011 before releasing Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon last year. Dark Moon went on to sell more than three million units worldwide, emerging as one of the biggest-selling 3DS releases to date.

Dark Moon producer Ken Yeeloy cites studio stability and a good working relationship with Nintendo as the driving factors behind the company's decision to develop games for Nintendo exclusively. "When we work with [Nintendo], it is strictly about the game, throughout the entire process," Yeeloy told Gamasutra. "The focus is driven by the quality of the game, and what is cool, and what feels good -- not how much money it's going to cost or how long is it going to take."

Nintendo offering refurbished Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk for $20

by Mike Suszek Writer RSS on Dec 11th 2013 1:00AM

Nintendo has a deal for those that don't have spare Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk controllers left over from the last console generation. The console manufacturer's online store now includes refurbished versions of the peripheral pack for $20, a savings of $10 on the normal price of the accessories.

Nintendo is offering the controllers in three colors: white, black and blue. Nintendo launched the Wii Remote Plus in November 2010, combining the gyroscope tech from its Wii Motion Plus add-on with the Wii's standard Wii Remote controller. Nintendo's refurbished goods may include "minor cosmetic blemishes," but are guaranteed to be fully functional and include Nintendo's standard 90-day warranty. Given that games like Wii Sports Club and Super Mario 3D World can use the controllers, the refurbished set may prove to be a good investment for Wii U owners.
