Politicians propose cigarette warning labels for games

by on Mar 21st 2012 5:45PM

A bipartisan bill has been introduced that would, if passed, require cigarette-esque warning labels on video games. Authored by house reps Frank Wolf (R-VA) and Joe Baca (D-CA), the Violence in Video Games Labeling Act (H.R. 4204) would require all games rated "E" or higher, regardless of actual content, to bare a label that reads "WARNING: Exposure to violent video games has been linked to aggressive behavior."

This isn't the first time Wolf and Baca have tried to introduce such legislation; "The Video Game Health Labeling Act of 2009" was essentially the same bill, although it only applied to games rated "T" and up. Its proposed warning label also made mention of "other violent media," which is absent from the dynamic duo's latest draft.

"Representative Baca's facially unconstitutional bill -- which has been introduced to no avail in each of six successive Congressional sessions, beginning in 2002 -- needlessly concerns parents with flawed research and junk science," says ESA representative Rich Taylor in a statement to Gamasutra.

Taylor goes on to say that the supporting evidence used by Baca in the past has been "exhaustively reviewed" by "numerous medical experts, research authorities, and courts across the country, including the United States Supreme Court," which collectively found the data "lacking and unpersuasive."

Baca's resolve, however, refuses to waiver. "The video game industry has a responsibility to parents, families and to consumers to inform them of the potentially damaging content that is often found in their products," Baca told The Hill. "They have repeatedly failed to live up to this responsibility."

When asked to comment, a fictional ESRB representative said "What am I, chopped liver?"

Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion confirmed for 3DS

While many speculated if Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion would come to the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Power magazine has confirmed. While not too many details are known, the cover of the magazine definitely confirms that the game will exist.

Update: As it turns out, this will be a sequel to the 1990 Sega Genesis game, Castle of Illusion.” It will be a side-scroller but still keep the painting mechanic, incorporating the stylus.

[PC, PS3, X360, Mac] The Walking Dead gets its first official trailer
Fans worldwide indulged themselves in the season 2 finale of The Walking Dead last night, so Telltale felt it was appropriate that today was the day to release the first trailer for their upcoming video game adaptation.

The trailer was pieced together by Daniel Kanemoto, a fan, who was hired by Telltale Games to bring the trailer to life. It is faithful to the style emulated by the comics and is shaping up nicely.

The first episode is slated to become available as of late April for 400 MSP / $4.99 on Microsoft's Xbox Live and Sony's PlayStation Network. Telltale will also be making a season pass available for PC and Mac for $24.99 (Or $22.49 for those of you who pre-ordered them). There will be a total of five monthly episodes when it reaches its end.

[PC, PS3, X360] BioWare Halts Work on Dragon Age II Expansion

[PC, PS3, X360] BioWare Halts Work on Dragon Age II Expansion
[Image: game-news-image-2012-9e3bb6a9cdb6a7fe0c3...7d8beb.jpg]
Almost a year to the day since BioWare released the highly-anticipated but somewhat disappointing Dragon Age II, the developer announced today that work on any future expansions for the game have been halted.

"While we will still be keeping an eye out for any issues that might crop up in DAII and supporting the community should any emergencies should arise, we’re moving the entire team’s focus to the next phase of Dragon Age’s future," said executive producer Mark Darrah in a statement on the studio's official forums. Darrah clarified on his Twitter account that an expansion pack, called Exalted March, was in the works but has been scrapped to move onto "other DA opportunities".

While the exact plans for the future of the franchise were not specified, the company was openly recruiting team members for work on Dragon Age III last year. Darrah concluded the statement by making a plea to fans to continue giving feedback on the Dragon Age franchise and asks where they would like to see the series go from here.

[Wii U] Darksiders II is a Wii U Launch Title

[Wii U] Darksiders II is a Wii U Launch Title
[Image: game-news-image-2012-2bdf70621512bbeab22...35aaac.jpg]
Darksiders II will be available on the Wii U from "day one" Hayden Dalton, lead designer at developer Vigil Games, told Digital Spy in a recent interview. Moreover, the developer has committed a small team dedicated solely to making use of the Wii U's unique controller capabilities.

"That's been very interesting to see what those guys are doing, and they're making efforts to make sure we do use it in more than a slapdash way," said Dalton. "It's basically the core game, but then with added abilities to do certain things that you can't do on the other consoles."

"One of the things that we did, when we were originally going to show it off, was that you could equip stuff directly. So, for instance, I could be running along and I could click on another piece and I could put it on as I'm running through the game," he explained. "That's huge, it's not breaking up the game in a way, I'm not going into a menu and assigning it, I'm literally just tapping as I'm playing. We're not basically heavily changing the core game to support the control system, but the control system will be an enhancement of the core game."

Darksiders II will also launch on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this June. Make sure to check out the game's latest trailer here.

Assassin's Creed 3 for Wii U puts the Animus, weapons in your hands

by on Mar 26th 2012 4:00PM

In Assassin's Creed 3, the Wii U's WiiPad will act as a link to the Animus, providing players a constant map and navigation tool, and displaying Animus database updates on the touchscreen without interrupting the main game, NintenGen reports, via the latest issue of Nintendo Gamer. The Wii U's Animus integration will also provide character bios and act as an encyclopedia for the game's goings-on, making fact-checks for historical accuracy easier than ever. The above trailer isn't specific to the Wii U, but does show off some character and weapon descriptions that the Wii U is purported to support.

The Wii U will provide weapon-selection options, meaning the switch between dual-wielding and single-weapon combat will be a one-touch process. The WiiPad screen will also be an alternate view for Eagle Vision, allowing players to move the controller itself to search their surroundings.

Today we have a heap of new Assassin's Creed 3 information for your eagle eyes to devour; scavenge for the good bits right here.

REVIEW – Resident Evil: Revelations

Game – Resident Evil Revelations
Version – Nintendo 3DS
ESRB Rating: ‘M’ – Mature (18+)
Obtained – Review Copy Courtesy of Capcom

This was actually my first Resident Evil game. I did try out the demo prior to playing the full version, and it definitely had me interested. If you enjoy action/horror games, then this game will not disappoint. The story is very engaging and with a wide range of weapons to find, it provides a very fun experience. This game was enjoyable enough where I am interested to check out future titles in the series, and I hope those unsure of this series will give it a shot.

Gameplay

This is an action/horror game where the player explores their surroundings while encountering zombies, walking dead or infected creatures. The player controls different members of a crew through episodes while trying to put together the story. The player gets an insight of the back story to try to put the story together. The player explores different areas like a cave, a ship, the beach, and a plane crash site. Depending on the episode the player may be exploring parts of each of these areas in the same episode. The player needs to be able to solve some minor puzzles and figure out where they need to go.

Along the way, the player will encounter weapons, ammo, grenades, and many different types of zombies. There are hidden weapons, ammo, items for the player to find throughout the game. Another feature is that the player can upgrade the weapons via custom packs which allow the player to increase the bullet capacity, fire power, firing rate or critical hit rate. The player can only hold onto 3 weapons at a time, but can swap out the weapons and upgrades to other weapons when accessing the black crates. After each episode the player is graded based on their accuracy, number of deaths, and time taken to complete. The player is rewarded with in game currency which can be used within other game modes.

Controls

In addition to exploration, the game has a solid control structure making the game very enjoyable to play. While I did not use the Circle Pad Pro, the controls without it are still very solid. The player uses the circle pad for movement with each button serving a purpose. The player uses the R button along with Y to draw and fire their weapon or the scanner, Y by itself to interact with objects, pick up weapons. A uses a healing herb, X uses the sub-weapons, such as varying types of grenades, your knife or other sub-weapons. B is used along with the circle pad to dodge or quickly turn. R & B will reload your weapon, or using R and hitting down on the control pad.

These controls are the default controls, but can be changed to other types, and the controls will also be different if using the Circle Pad Pro. I thought that the controls worked well for this game. While there are many different controls to keep in mind, the game helps remind you and introduces them very well. The touch screen is also used to select the weapon, or to change to the scanner. The map is displayed on the touch screen, and all of the menus are accessed with the stylus. There are some instances where the player will need to mash the buttons to help escape from an enemy trap, or an enemy grip on the player.

Game modes

There are only a few main modes at the beginning and Raid mode becomes unlockable after completing some of the campaign. In addition to the campaign mode, is a mission/street pass mode. This provides the player with objectives to complete while playing the campaign to unlock costumes, weapons, or Raid Mode levels. The player can receive objectives via street pass which allows the player to interact with them in Raid mode. Raid Mode is the multiplayer portion of the game, which can be played solo, local wireless or online wireless. The objective is simple where the player(s) just need to reach the goal while defeating any zombies along the way. The game still grades the player on their accuracy, number of deaths and time taken.

There is a store in Raid mode where the player can spend the in game currency BP credits. The player is given them based on their performance on episodes in campaign and Raid mode. The store also provides some weapons and upgrades for the 3DS coins as well. The items can be purchased are different weapons, the custom upgrades, along with ammo pouches, herbs and other helpful items.

Visuals/3D Graphics

The visuals are very impressive with the 3D graphics really adding that depth to the levels. The game has numerous cut scenes, along with a reminder of the story whenever the player resumes campaign mode (don’t worry this can be skipped if needed). The graphics are simply stunning and provides an immersive environment left to the player to explore. The 3D effects make the cut scenes look more movie quality having that level of depth and making them more enjoyable to watch. This has been one of the few games I’ve had the desire to play with the 3D on.

Music/Sounds

The music is mostly silent, unless enemies are approaching nearby, or is used for dramatic effect. The sounds are what really improve the experience making it more immersive. The sound effects from the small things like opening a locker, to the gun shots, to zombies grabbing hold of the player really provide a good horror experience. The voice acting was also done well adding that personal touch to the game. I definitely preferred playing the game with headphones if I couldn’t play with the volume on so I could enjoy music and sounds the game has to offer.

Concluding Overall Impressions

Overall, the game is very enjoyable. Some areas can get repetitive like walking back though previously explored areas and having to fight new zombies. Also, the underwater enemies are hard to dodge and become frustrating to kill or avoid. The game does have plenty of checkpoints so if you manage to get killed or need to quit abruptly, you can continue either at that point or a little further back. While game is fun to explore, the horror part wasn’t really there. There were some parts where zombies would pop out and make you want to jump back, but mostly was not really evident. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys action games where you get to kill zombies with weapons and explosives. The story is quite deep and will keep the player wanting more while playing.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

[Multi] Assassin's Creed III Special Editions Revealed

[Multi] Assassin's Creed III Special Editions Revealed
As Ubisoft continues to build up the massive hype train following Assassin's Creed III, the publisher unveiled three different special editions for the game today.

The first and most comprehensive of the bunch, called "The Freedom Edition" includes a figurine of protagonist Connor, steel case, George Washington's notebook containing secrets about the Assassins and Templars, an exclusive lithograph, two additional single player missions("Lost Mayan Ruins" and "Ghost of War"), a "Sharpshooter" multiplayer package, and a collector box.

The next edition, called "The Join or Die Edition", comes with a different collector box, an Assassin medallion, George Washington's notebook, one additional single-player mission ("Ghost of War"), and the multiplayer package. [Image: game-news-image-2012-d51f818402e2cf1220f...9afaef.jpg]
Last and least, the "Special Edition" comes with its own unique packaging and an exclusive single-player mission called "A Dangerous Secret".

So far these special editions have only been announced for Australia, Europe, and Asia and will cost A$130, A$110, and A$90 for each respective edition, though we expect a similar announcement is imminent for North American gamers. These deals are also currently only available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game, however we would be surprised if the same or similar editions aren't made available for PC and Wii U versions of the game as well. Assassin's Creed III becomes available on October 30.

[PS3, X360] Review Roundup - Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City

[PS3, X360] Review Roundup - Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City
[Image: game-news-image-2012-e3d6de986db3f0e3d7e...75727c.jpg]Destructoid - 7.5/10 - "Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City suffers from poor design and sometimes doesn't quite seem to "get" the point of the style it wishes to emulate, but that doesn't stop it from being a genuinely good time that should satisfy anybody looking for a hardcore romp. As a challenging rollercoaster ride through an iconic fictional catastrophe, Raccoon City provides hours of violent fun interspersed with some exasperated cries of aggravation. It should be noted that those looking strictly for survival horror, or even an experience on par with Resident Evil 4, will likely be disappointed with what this entry offers, as this is about as typical a shooter as the series has ever gotten. Those simply looking to kill, be killed, and kill again, however, are in for a pretty solid escapade. "

Eurogamer - 4/10 - "Operation Raccoon City is the latest product of Capcom's experiment in working with western developers. Previous games like Bionic Commando, Dark Void and Dead Rising 2 are a mixed bag at best, but this is the poorest result yet, with a show-stopping franchise in the hands of a studio that's clearly not up to it. The brand on Operation Raccoon City guarantees it many sales - perhaps millions. And for every one of those buyers, the name Resident Evil will lose a little of its lustre."

Game Informer - 6/10 - "Umbrella may have filled Raccoon City with horrific creatures, but SlantSix has tainted the fabled town in its own way. It’s difficult recommending a return to Raccoon when you have to endure buggy AI, clunky gameplay, and terrible glitches like disappearing floors. Yes, on more than one occasion my friends and I had to ditch whole missions because we kept falling into an empty void. Not even online play is enough of a reason to warrant checking out this botched experiment with the Resident Evil brand."

IGN - 4/10 - "Given the huge amount of potential the developers of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City had to work with, it’s disappointing how little of it was actually realized. On several occasions I was legitimately surprised by the mention of the name William Birkin or the familiar sound of picking up an herb, having long forgotten that this was supposed to be a Resident Evil game. The terrible AI, the lackluster locations and the complete lack of atmosphere or memorable characters destroy what could have been a brilliant offshoot. In the end, Operation Raccoon City is little more than a poor man’s SOCOM, and a destitute man’s Resident Evil."

Joystiq - 2/5 - "Ultimately, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is everything I hoped it wouldn't be: a mediocre shooter hoping to be bolstered by the Resident Evil name. It takes what is arguably the series' best setting and wastes it, forcing players to plod through generic underground facilities and the occasional, oddly vacant street from one boring encounter to the next."

[Image: game-news-image-2012-7ad51d40c528b406cb2...77cd84.jpg]Digital Chumps - 8.4/10 - "Having been originally on the Wii, anyone used to high resolution, advanced graphics is likely to have some concerns over the presentation quality of Graces f. Fortunately, the Tales team did a very good job of bolstering the graphics with cell shading and great color usage. To be honest, I didn't even know this was a Wii port until hours after playing. I thought it was just a good looking PS3 game, with more to write home about in terms of the animation and artwork than of the technical features. Suffice it to say that the game is easy on the eyes and well animated. Voice-acting and effects are also very good; I was a bit surprised that no Japanese voice track was included, but that didn't takeaway much from the experience."

EGM - 8/10 - "Sure, it's unmistakably familiar, but that's also part of its charm-Tales of Graces f does Japanese RPG conventions exceedingly well, which makes it a must-play for both longtime fans and series newcomers."

Game Informer - 7.75/10 - "Like many Japanese RPGs, Tales of Grace f takes 10-15 hours before it starts getting good. It moves slowly and never reaches a level of pacing beyond walking from point A to B. I found myself snapping my fingers at the screen telling these people to move it along while they explained the meaning of friendship and how much they care about each other with melodramatic dialogue. I like these characters, and I can sympathize with their plight, but there is never a sense of urgency in their mission."

Joystiq - 3.5/5 - "It's the series' tried-and-true mix of campy charm, fast action, and a borderline-artistic knack for wringing entertainment from time-worn cliches that keeps fans coming back for more. In those areas, Tales of Graces F truly excels. It's far from a bastion of genre progressiveness, but as far as achingly traditional JRPGs go, you could do a whole, whole lot worse."

Game Trailers - 6.7/10 - "With battles that are over in a flash and a world that imposes hard limits on your exploration, Tales of Graces f emphasizes its shaky story at the expense of your feeling of discovery. You'll spend the majority of the game listening to poorly-delivered conversations, and it seldom feels like time well spent. It gets better as you go, but it’s defined by mediocrity as a whole."

I will be getting this eventually as I have been a Tales fan for a while. I was pretty happy when they announced a NA release, just hoping they will release more Tales games overseas. One can dream though... Night Angel Offline

Very true I just wish there was more demand for these type of games over here. Not everyone is into JRPG's like they use to be.

FIFA Street holds off Resident Evil: ORC from taking first in UK

by on Mar 26th 2012 9:15AM

Capcom broke EA's monopoly of the top four titles in the UK last week with Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, which debuted in second on the charts. The top spot belonged to EA's FIFA Street for a second week in a row, with the publisher grabbing third through fifth with Mass Effect 3, FIFA 12 and SSX, respectively.

Kid Icarus: Uprising flew in with a seventh place debut, becoming the only Nintendo title in the top ten, as Mario Party 9 dropped from fifth to 13.

There were two new titles that sliced up some competition to crack the top 40, as Total War Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai cut in at 17 and Ninja Gaiden 3 made a mess a couple spots later at 19. Sneak past the break to check out the UK top ten.

NPD: $3.3 billion spent outside of new boxed games across regions in Q4 2011

by on Mar 22nd 2012 9:00AM

Still in its infancy of tracking and reporting games that aren't new and from a box, the NPD reported sales for the US and key European markets reached $3.33 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011 (Oct. - Dec.). The number covers "used games, game rentals, subscriptions, digital full-game downloads, social network games, downloadable content and mobile games." To be extra clear, that means "everything besides new physical copies of games sold in retail stores."

The breakdown of the overall $3.33 billion has the States with a $2.04 billion spend, and the UK, Germany, and France forking over a combined total of $1.29 billion. Despite troubles at retail, UK consumers still dropped $508 million in the region, while Germany and France saw sales of $461 million and $320 million (respectively).

NPD usually reports monthly, strictly on US game sales. "Now that we've established our Europe based service covering the UK, France, and Germany, we can begin working directly with clients to help them dissect at deeper levels how the unique market drivers specific to each country can help them understand the increasingly global nature of the games industry," said NPD Euro analyst Sam Naji.

It's still hard to contextualize the data since the (publicly shared) tracking of digital spend is still so new. We do know that in 2011 the total spend in the States was around $16.6 billion, with new boxed games at retail reaching $9.3 billion.

[Image credit: Digital Storm via Shutterstock] The NPD Group Announces Fourth Quarter Consumer Spending on Video Game Content Outside of New Physical Retail Sales in U.S. and Key European Markets

PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK / LONDON, March 22, 2012 – Leading market research company, The NPD Group, today announced the fourth quarter 2011 (Oct.-Dec.) consumer spend on gaming content across the United States and Europe's largest video game markets (UK, France and Germany) via all monetization methods outside of new physical retail sales. Those sales, which include used games, game rentals, subscriptions, digital full-game downloads, social network games, downloadable content, and mobile games, reached a combined total of $3.33 billion (U.S. dollars).

At $2.04 billion, the United States captured the lion's share of fourth quarter sales, with UK, Germany and France generating a combined total of $1.29 billion (956MM Euros). Looking at sales by country, the UK generated close to $508 million, followed by Germany and France at $461 million and $320 million, respectively.

This information sources from NPD's expanding portfolio of global tracking research available through its Games Market Dynamics services, and addresses the demand for broader global insights and market comparisons using consistent measures and definitions across different geographies.

Utilizing its existing pan-European market research capabilities and established methodology, the market estimates can be harmonized with The NPD Group's U.S. tracking services, for insights into and across influential global markets.
"It's fascinating to see the nuances in consumer behavior across geographies," said Anita Frazier, industry analyst, The NPD Group. "Clearly these other forms of content acquisition do not follow as consistent of a trend as we see with the established box product business in the U.S."

"Now that we've established our Europe based service covering the UK, France, and Germany, we can begin working directly with clients to help them dissect at deeper levels how the unique market drivers specific to each country can help them understand the increasingly global nature of the games industry," said Sam Naji, European industry analyst, The NPD Group.

[PS3, X360, PC] Operation Raccoon City brings a special Jill Valentine DLC

[PS3, X360, PC] Operation Raccoon City brings a special Jill Valentine DLC
[Image: game-news-image-2012-f032fe1acf128a99595...ec5257.jpg]
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is hitting shelves next week and word has surfaced that Capcom is preparing some free DLC for release sometime in April. As you already know, the main story puts you in the shoes of Umbrella Secret Service troops but the DLC actually lets you take control of the U.S. Spec Ops.

Even more interestingly, the DLC takes place during Jill Valentien's famous escape from the monster created to destroy S.T.A.R.S, Nemesis, from the incredibly popular Resident Evil 3. It'll be interesting to see how many more what-if scenarios are thrown in by Capcom considering the game is set during the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3.

The game will be available for PS3 and Xbox 360 from the 20th of March, while PC gamers have to wait until 18th of May. This little DLC mission will be available on the 10th of April.

[PS3, X360] Meet the 'Bosses of Zombie Rock' from Lollipop Chainsaw
This new trailer for the upcoming Lollipop Chainsaw showcases the 'Bosses of Zombie Rock'. As you can expect, they style of the game is still carrying a very No More Heroes-flavoured taste so I would expect those who enjoyed that will enjoy this.
The game will be hitting shelves this June for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, will you be picking it up?

[3DS] Kingdom Hearts 3D to feature the longest ending in the series

[3DS] Kingdom Hearts 3D to feature the longest ending in the series
[Image: game-news-image-2012-ff8639981845cb177eb...ef42ea.jpg]
Tetsuya Nomura has dished out some more details on Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance. He hasn't revealed anything too meaty, but he did tease some extra tidbits about the characters and what we can expect to be revealed in an interview with Famitsu.

“If I had to say who the key persons were, I’d say they are the silver haired boy and Axel,” Nomura shared with Famitsu. “This time at the end of the story, there will be the longest cutscene of the whole series where the true form of Ansem and Xemnas, as well as their goals and many other truths will be revealed all at once.”

That does sound pretty tantalizing, especially if you are a Kingdom Hearts fan who have been there since the beginning when Ansem was the only real enemy and the Organization XIII weren't even a factor. Nomura also stated that he believes the game will take roughly 35 hours, Japanese fans will be able to get their hands on the game as of the 29th of March. Western gamers will have to wait for further announcements but Square Enix are believed to be pretty far into the localisation progress.

Kid Icarus: Uprising AR Card Scan Collection [137 Scans Currently!]

Kid Icarus: Uprising releases this Friday in the US, and one huge aspect of the game are the AR Cards. The game comes with 6 random AR Cards out of a possible 20, but Nintendo has said there are hundreds to collect in Series 1 (we know there are at least 404 AR Cards based on the numbering). In some cases, there will be booster packs distributed at various events and since it may be hard to collect them all, I thought it would be beneficial to compile a list of all the cards with links to scans of them so you can print them out and use them. I will continue to update this list as we get more scans. Enjoy!

UPDATE: I have 137 scans and 173 cards listed (out of at least 404 cards), as of March 22nd.

The Amazing Spider-Man has Move support

by on Mar 26th 2012 2:30PM

The Amazing Spider-Man will support Move on the PS3, Beenox confirmed after a stray piece of box art spotted by iWaggle3D got questions churning.

The box -- check it out to the left -- features the final art for The Amazing Spider-Man, Beenox said, but it doesn't specify how the Move will function with the title. Its insert shows two Move controllers and the PS Eye: If it does use two Move controllers, The Amazing Spider-Man will be the first third-party title to offer the dual-controller option, iWaggle3D noted.

The Amazing Spider-Man is hitting Wii and Xbox 360 as well, and while the Wii will use its own brand of motion-controls, there is no word yet if we'll be able to Web Rush with the Kinect.
