Saints Row IV has managed to stir up a great deal of controversy in Australia, especially as it was among the first few games to actually be refused classification even with our new R18+ rating.

Today the Australian Classification Board confirmed that they'll be standing by their decision to refuse the game's current form any sort of classification. You can read a full statement concerning the decision on the Classification Board's website, but to summarise: "In the Review Board's opinion, Saints Row IV could not be accommodated within the R18+ classification as drug use related to incentives and rewards is not permitted."

What does this mean? It means that Saints Row IV as it currently exists will not be available for sale across Australia however Deep Silver will be submitting a "safe" version to the board with the hopes that it will manage to receive a classification. Reportedly they are "reworking some of the code to create a version of the game for this territory by removing the content which could cause offence."

I had a chance to sit down and play Saints Row IV at PAX Australia last week and it was pretty entertaining. I can't help but wonder if the game will be released in Australia around the same time that it is being released in America and Europe (which is in August) with the classification issue slowing it down.

Saints Row IV will be available on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 this August.

Thanks Kotaku
