Love it or hate it, Kinect is here to stay. It became apparent when Microsoft announced that their new console, the Xbox One, would ship with the peripheral that the console manufacturer was ready to take things to the next level. Of course, many people (myself included) saw the original Kinect as a prototype device; a device that would go on to become something greater. Rare's Nick Burton believes that the new sensor will allow developers to do things that the original couldn't handle.
Xbox Wire posted a summary today in which multiple developers sang the praises for Microsoft's new hardware.
In this summary Burton is cited as saying that the new Kinect is 10x as powerful as its predecessor, allowing it to register a fingertip from up to three metres away. The post also mentions that the increased power is going to allow Rare to try new things with their first Xbox One game, Kinect Sports Rivals, such as being able to detect how forcefully players turn their wrist when using the throttle during jet-ski races. Additionally, the camera will be able to track your hand placement during rock-climbing.
If you are interested in reading a summary of what was said during Microsoft's event at Comic-Con then head over to the site to check it out, it might even make you feel a bit more comfortable about purchasing an Xbox One this holiday season.
I'm still not sold on the importance of Kinect, but I'm also not going to rule it out completely just yet. However, I find it incredibly interesting that Sony has been staying relatively quiet about their new PlayStation Eye Camera; could it be that device not be aiming to offer similar features that Microsoft's Kinect will offer?
Thanks IGN.
