[Welcome to Smash Bros. July. Throughout this month, vgZero will be full of articles all about your favourite Nintendo fighting game. Expect lots of speculation about what the future holds, as well as some insight into the series' history.]
Professor Layton is a top-hat-wearing fellow whom made a name for himself by solving puzzles. With the help of his young apprentice, Luke, Professor Layton has been on a number of critically acclaimed adventures on the Nintendo DS. The series has enjoyed a surge in popularity over the years, and we think it's time for the Professor himself to make his debut appearance in the Smash Bros. franchise.

At first glance, Layton isn't a natural fighter. But we believe that Nintendo could play to his strengths and create an elegant move-set that would make him a worthy playable character. Unlike other fighters, Layton wouldn't have an arsenal of weapons at his disposal. Thankfully, given his body type, Layton's long limbs would make him a lethal threat in close quarters combat. As a bonus, it would be nice to watch him throw his top-hat at someone, only for it to return to his head like a boomerang. If Nintendo get his animations absolutely right, Layton could add a great layer of class to the existing roster.

The Professor Layton series is also known for its beautifully hand-drawn characters and environments, which would be a perfect fit for some Layton themed Smash stages. Not to mention the stellar soundtrack that would come with it.

We already know that the new Smash Bros. experience is coming a Nintendo handheld for the very first time with the 3DS, so who better to grace the series than Professor Layton?
