[PS3, PSP] PSN down due to 'external intrusion', Anonymous to blame?

Many people attempting to log into the PSN have reported various errors and being unable to access their content. Well now, we know why: Sony turned off service on April 20th. According to the Playstation blog, Sony temporarily disabled its PSN servers due to an 'external intrusion', leaving many questions and no timetable as to when service will return.

Back in early April, Anonymous declared war on Sony due to the former's legal action against George "Geohot" Hotz. Many on the Playstation Blog and other sites are blaming the hacker collective for the attack even though Anonymous has stated that they did not bring down PSN. Anonymous has instead stated that this is probably Sony attempting to put a spin on their own internal problems by blaming the group after Anonymous launched DDoS attacks against them earlier this month.

Sony expects the service to return within a day or two. And because of the size and the way Anonymous operates, it is hard to place the blame squarely on Anonymous when it is possible to do something under the banner of Anonymous without the permission of the whole group.

The saga continues.

It is honestly hard to say which way this would go. I don't know if Sony would risk pissing off some many customers by doing this. Sure, a fraction of gamers know who Anonymous are, but large portions would just end up blaming Sony.

At the same time, considering Anonymous has come out and said they didn't do this, I'm willing to believe that is is a separate group of Anon. Not that I know for sure, but I find it hard to believe Sony would do this to themselves or that Anonymous would openly lie about not being involved.

I just want the damn service back up so I can play Portal 2 online.
